- The dynamic duo of Brownells Gun Techs Keith Ford and Steve Ostrem is back at the Rock Island Auction Co. to show us an example of more recent military small arms history - the M45A1 CQBP (Close Quarter Battle Pistol). Often called the "Rail Gun," due to its big under-receiver Picatinny accessory rail, the M45A1 was the last 1911 made for the U.S. military. They were ordered from Colt by the Marine Corps in 2012 to equip Force Recon units... But then part of the order was cancelled. Colt was allowed to sell the guns they had on hand to the civilian market. The M45A1 is pretty much a modern match 1911: Commander hammer, beavertail safety, extended thumb safety, Novak night sights, G10 grips, and a Flat Dark Earth Cerakote finish. M45A1s were issued with Wilson Combat #47 magazines. Alas, the CQBP didn't last long in service. Polymer pistol haters, don't read this: the M45A1 is being phased out in favor of Glock 19s. Good news: aside from leftover Marine contract guns on the civilian market, Colt also sells a commercial edition of the M45A1.

Got mine it’s a combat issued decommissioned with all the paperwork from colt
Some of this information is so off. It was never delivered? Recon Marines and Marine Raiders were issued it, and while Raiders have been using the Glock 19, Recon Marines still use it
I think he meant the particular guns they were holding were ordered but not delivered. The Marines did use M45A1s but not every gun Colt made for the Marines was delivered.
That is a beautiful gun and I love the color...
That isn’t entirely true, there are some units like Force Recon that are still using the M45A1.
Took words right outa my mouth. In fact some in certain units were allowed to purchase and use their own M45a1.
I deployed 3 years ago and the MERF forces all had those 1911s and a buddy in force recon is still using them now.
Thank you Mr Williams sur yez zur
A challenging weapon for a sidearm. The Marine Corps had blinders on when they procured this weapon - nostalgia got in the way of common sense. A great match pistol, and a fun toy. But an anachronism in every way. The Marines correctly pivoted to a stock Glock 19 for the purpose. A beautiful 1911 otherwise.
Recon Marines still use the M45A1
@@Justin_GFM I heard that as well. I don't think it's because they want it, rather it's all thats available TOE wise - for now until M18 gets delivered.
Chuck Mahon Perhaps, yes. I’ve read that the older M45 (the MEU(SOC) pistol) was much better than the Colt
@@ChuckMahon I know one of those Marines personally (inf ofcr). Most love it.
@@Justin_GFM Yep, that is 100% correct, especially in certain dry climate in classified conditions.
They're pretty heavy guns but they're very comfortable and very accurate. They did get issued to MARSOC and Force Recon and some MEUs. They were given back to Colt due to the cerakote finish coming or and gumming up the action. They came issued with two 7 round Wilson mags.
Ian White I do have to wonder why the excellent Wilson 8 and 10 round mags were not issued - that’s puzzling
@@ChuckMahon I wonder the same too. I get that they're lighter but I have a 7 round and an 8 round and they're basically the same size the 8 round just has a bigger baseplate and honestly they work better with the lanyard loop.
7 rounds is mil-spec and what the 1911 was designed for, and the general consensus is that 7 rounds is more reliable than 8 rounds, even though problems are almost nonexistent in modern 8 rounders, especially ones from Wilson. A 10 round would stick out a lot.
A 3 star USMC General ret. which is why the USMC went to Colt to upgrade the MEUSOC 1911a1's being built by 2112s.
😀😀😀😊 Thanks Guys Love the 1911 🔫
I just picked up one myself, not decommissioned but still an awesome peace.
dont forget to mention that the cerakote finish was a problem
HOPE someday to get a 1911a1 ITHACA,Same pistol I carried as an MP.1974-77
Only SOCom swapped M45A1s out for G19s so they are universal with all of SOCom. The first ones shipped had a terrible coating that would dissolve in lube and gunk up really bad but the revised model that Marine Recon uses has a paler brown which is more durable but not anywhere near as corrosion resistant.
I'd like to own that set.
I want one
Verygood i from thailand
I have an original before Colt was ordered to change the roll marks to M45A1. Beautiful piece for sure but would never be my first choice for self defense.
A beautiful piece of work. Too bad the Marine Corp cancelled this gun.
I’d love to get them grips for my Desert Warrior.
They are Desert Camo G10s by Mil-Tac, but don't get your G10s from them. They are an incompetent business from my experience. So I placed an order for their grips and a few days later it shows up in my mailbox but I didn't get a tracking number, I wasn't charged, and the grips were slightly out of spec so I sent them back with a letter telling them the order is cancelled but THEN they decided to charge me and without a replacement item. That's what I got for doing the right thing. I will never do business with them again. And their regular G10s are thick, it makes a 1911 feel like a double stack. They don't even bother to make an relief cut in the grip itself for an ambi safety either, what they did was have the grips just sit about a 1mm above the frame, adding width and with an ugly gap.
A Thought Crime that sucks and thanks for the information I will definitely stay away from them!
Lt General William Keys USMC is the reason for the 3 stars
There are a few M45a1s floating around the civilian market with the USMC mark not crossed off. Shortly after getting the contract Colt sold exact copies on the civilian market with the USMC mark intact. When the Marines found out they were not ok with that (they may have threatened legal action) so Colt recalled all the pistols for the express purpose of crossing out the USMC mark. Some stores and individual owners did not send the guns back and pistols in that condition probably sell for five figures or more. Military Arms Channel talks about these here ruclips.net/video/c8Ykz2J64_M/видео.html .
Who in their right minds sent them back???
This is awful. Those two guns were mine, and there is so much factually incorrect information in this video it makes my head spin. These were not "left over" - they were shipped to and in the inventory of the USMC, and were still in "unissued" condition when the USMC traded in 1000 of their pistols for replacements under warranty - preferring the Ionbond finish to the Cerakote of the earlier guns. Apparently these guys didn't even bother to read RIAC's catalog description, which contained all of the information necessary to make an informed presentation. The "head of Colt was a 3-star general" is a new one for me, and I can't believe anyone presuming to represent a professional firearms-related organization such as Brownell's would be willing to repeat internet nonsense on film without verifying it is true.
brownell suck that's why I stopped buying anything from them .. full of bull shit co.
so is passing off b/s as truth a way to make sales ..right
cabelas .. so your the one customer that really went in and asked a ex washing machine salesman about a gun .. holy shit .. it was you .. your famous people talk about you to this day ..'' hey did you here the one about this guy ......... ....... who went into a cabelas and ... '' followed by '' wonder who that fool is '' .. well shit it was you ..
Roy Rodriguez dude if you’re job is to sell something you probably need to know a little bit about it.
Yea, the head of Colt at the time the Marines adopted the M45A1 was retired Marine Corps Lt. Gen (Three Stars) William Keys, Navy Cross recipient during the Vietnam War
well im offended
I hear the G19 is replacing the M45 but that hasn't been completed yet. I still see a lot of Recon guys with M45s
Brodie Kirkpatrick Yes, I can tell you first hand that some Recon units are still using the M45A1.
@@brokenbstring what mags have you seen in use?
@@ChuckMahon Wilson
I'm sorry, but I'll never understand the 9mm Luger AUSTRIAN cartridge in US Military. We all know a 1911 .45 ACP is God's pistol in God's cartridge. That said, a .40 S&W and a 10mm Auto are simply superior to a 9mm in terms of man stopping and you keep the 9mm capacity capabilities.
And well now cousin houch I am very glad you did not half to use your glad hands to put one in the back of my brain steam skull head love you leather neck cousin thanks for Mike checking me love and your Texas law
"If you had to carry one around in a holster all day it would get pretty heavy"? lol, get stronger!! I'd much rather be in a fire fight with a 45 acp that a 9 mm and not sure what branch of the service you were in but lets see them let you change out from a full size Sig. to a Compact? You just can't walk in the Armory and ask for a compact kit to change one over. Merry Christmas Brownells!
SIG is offering both the M17 and M18, the latter of which has a 3.9" barrel. I'm not sure what the process of ordering one or the other (or both) would be like...but both options are available to the military.
That being said, FNX 45 would be my choice. 15 rounds of 45ACP in a larger, but only 4oz heavier package (unloaded weight)
Love my commander size 1911's. Why carry an ugly gun. Lol.
wait the 1911 was dead in 1980's then 2000's .. so now these two old fools are calling it dead in 2019 ... ya right .. they will be dead and gone before any 1911 ..total wow over how hard it would be to carry all day .. hey you fucking fools that's what people did for 80 years , mex war ww-1 ww-2 , korea , viet nam .. where were you ass wipes .. shit fuck brownells
