9:22 Just a little correction. Combat Medics during WW2 absolutely carried weapons, however Desmond Doss was a devout pacifist and refused to disobey one of the Ten Commandments that’s says you should not kill. The fact that he saved that man lives without a weapons is what is spectacular.
It was a very heroic thing for him to do in light of his interpretation of the 6th Commandment. As a Navy veteran I can completely agree with the last point he made. In any military movie, it is the tiny details that drive us crazy, not the big ones. For example, in the worst Navy movie ever made, Under Siege, it didn't bother me that a highly trained Navy SEAL was now the personal chef to the captain of an battleship, as stupid as that seems. What drove me crazy the most was GOLD SHOULDER BOARDS on a navy chief. Only admirals wear gold shoulder boards. That one detail makes the movie unwatchable, even more than Steven Seagal's acting.
Did you use a mirror to shave? No, Sergeant, I use a razor, I find I get better results! . No head slamming, but I did get 10 laps around the parade square holding my weapon over my head. :-D
I did Army Basic in the early 90's, I remember one of my drill sergeants, he was a tank driver, never raised his voice louder than needed to be heard, but he explained his teaching method the second day we were there as the three T's, first he'd teach us, then he'd test us and if we f'd it up, he'd torture us, we got really good at pushups and leg lifts. Our lead instructors goal was we would excel on drill and ceremony and aptitude tests or we'd excel at physical fitness, by the end we were top in all three. The only week we didn't have the lead platoon banner on our flag was one miserable week. Of course we started with 60 and only 46 of us graduated, vs the other three platoons in the company lost about 8 combined out of 180. They never endorsed or allowed hazing, really wasn't needed. Fair but tough is how I would describe them all. All of us wanted to quit at some point I'm sure, but it was definitely worth it.
I did Army BCT in 1970, very similar to what you described. Lots of PT as training or motivation. We were also tops in all 3. We graduated about 110 of the 160 that started. Many were re-cycled for physical reasons, more were still hospitalized. And a bunch were AWOL - they were drafted. Could not believe how many failed to qualify with the rifle, that was 2 weeks re-cycle to the range. Rifle expert was easy for me but I grew up a deer hunter in Western Pa. Some of them caught up to us at AIT but we were half way through. The drill sgts. Were hard but mostly fair. The movie STRIPES was filmed at Ft. Knox and yes there were a lot of tanks on the roads all day, all night and weekends too. At least when I was there. Those were M-60 tanks in the film. Sgt. Hulka was realistic. I lived in the old 2 story wood barracks, many of them burned down, they were fire traps.
Reminds me: a drill sergeant was getting a bit too cocky and aggressive with a new recruit on this side of the world. So he, the drill sergeant, challenged him to a fight to prove his "superiority" to other recruits. It went down really really bad. The new recruit knocked him out cold and completely humiliated him. Which tanked the sergeant's reputation...

Meanwhile, the Army Boot Camp during my son't time in 2014 allowed recruits to "pull out a stress card" if they were overwhelmed so they could take a break.
I went in 05 and it’s pretty accurate imo. His yelling and antics are familiar however being obviously being comedic for the sake of the movie. For me in my platoon it was just intense screaming and bs when you were interacting with the dis. It was more like 3 guys spitting all over your face yelling insane incoherent nonsense while you yell aye aye sir trying keep your composure.
Ex-BF had just gotten out of the Marine Corps when the movie came out. He said it is very accurate. You could do more back then and get away with it. Is it any wonder it was accurate with the great R. Lee Ermey.

R. Lee Ermey is without a doubt the greatest representation of a DI in cinema....ever. Very accurate. His portrayal was the closest to when I went through basic training in 1984.
It's weird how few people know that R. Lee Ermey played a DI in "The Boys in Company C".
Same type of movie as Full Metal Jacket (boot camp then off to Vietnam). The ending is stranger than grunts singing the Mickey Mouse Show song.
The accuracy may be due to him being a real DI in the USMC.
@@xuser48 Correct. Another very accurate DI was Santos Morales, the man who portrayed the Senior DI in "The Boy's in Company C" in which Ermey played the junior buck Sergeant DI.
I think it's fair to say his portrayal was 100% accurate.

However, most modern Bibles now correctly translate the Hebrew as stating “thou shall not murder“ versus “thou shalt not kill“. Otherwise the behavior of the old testament Hebrew armies would’ve been violating God’s direct command while under his command.
Yeah, I also caught that and knew he was mistaken. I wasn't going to correct him until I saw yours. That will be sufficient.

@@vitesse_arnhem He was a medic and saved peoples lives, y'know like a medic does. The medic's job is not to shoot people it is to help the wounded, and despite being shot at, he still did his job. A coward would hide and not help people but that is simply not the case for Desmond Doss.

Oh believe me I've met a few who did after watching that movie
its becuae half of the film is military training and its quite gripping however all the vietnam but is really metaphorical and woke and deep and thats the anti-war bit
I think making anti-war movies is almost a paradox. Too make a true anti-war film means you have to make it too un-comfortable to watch, Like "Johnny Got His Gun" or "Come And See"
A good chunk of mainstream war films are anti-war at their core. I really can't think of a single mainstream war film that is pro war.
Boys in the hood, Menace to society, etc nothing new, of course it makes kids want to dress and act like gangsters.

@@onesidedunpure109 Actually there might be another meaning as well, military sometimes is like circus, if you been part of it you are part of the 'scene' and you doin some pretty stupid and unnecessary things so after being part of a circus for x amount of days in your life you might not find a normal circus funny anymore :D

Now that was centuries and centuries ago. Imagine how technologically advanced they are NOW. Better hope that space marine project gets developed soon!

do they say the jody thing to female marines, too? do they haze the female marines as much and same way as males?

Idk, I haven't even been the Military.

My sister was the singer in her bootcamp platoon. She was the number one for it. Afterwards her DI would say she hated her voice. Lol
I'm sorry
Don't be. My sister used it as motivation. After boot camp her DI's spoke about how much they actually loved her singing.
There’s so much truth to when he said they needed to be in therapy. PTSD is a death sentence.
Trimcoversit no it's not, therapy and family support can do wonders for a person. There are plenty of people who develop PTSD that heal over time. Though I wasn't in the military I suffered a major trauma myself and developed PTSD, every once in a while the symptoms show up again but for the most part I'm a happy, normal person.. and I'm not a minority in that.

@morbidcorpse yeah if anything it pretty much glorified soldiers in a cool way by making each one of them special in their own and badass way
It's crazy for me to think that people would watch that movie and want to enlist. I'm confident that this is not the feeling that Kubrick was trying to convey. But it shows how much subjectivity there is in art.

My Dad was in the Marine Corp before I was born, so I grew up loving and respecting Marines! By the way, he was in the Korean war.

I love how they found a down-to-earth likeable guy instead of some over the top "Hoorah" dude with a real hardon for acting tough.
Great stuff!
