I like how you talk about what tasks the knife was designed for. I get annoyed with reviewers who want to bushcraft everything, swizzle-sticks, ferro-rods, wood-batoning.
These can be found for $30, so they pique a lot of interest, but at the end of the day it's a skinner intended for soft-tissue.

Thanks for your content. There are plenty of knives out there for twice the price. I have Carbon V Cold Steel, Bucks of every shape and size and I carry my Gerbers, the Freeman, folder and fixed and the Sportsman folders. Dollar for dollar, pound for pound, they never let me down.

I like this basic blade a lot. I have the fixed blade and folding blade versions of this knife. I've had them for years and they do what I want a basic blade to do. Mine have wood grips and they look good...:) Keep up the great work my friend...:)

I had a gerber freeman for a long time. It’s a great edc knife! I used it for everything you can think of and it’s held up great.

The folder was my first knife - and it was a great knife.
I bought the fixed blade one because I was curious, and I found the grip was rather small on this version of it.
But then I saw a limited version of it with beautiful antler scales, and I bought it. The antler makes a wider grip which makes it fit the hand way better.

You're a great guy. I like your knife reviews. This Gerber is as you said, very basic stuff. I suggest you check out the Skallywag MDV Plus One, in D2. Not a lot of actual good reviews on it out there however the blade deserves some as it is extremely thought trough and purpose driven. Keep it up;)

I have an older folding version with wood scales. As a Scout leader i can't carry a fixed blade. So that knife has been my go to camping knife for years.

Nothing wrong with it considering what its made to do. I'd probably make a leather or kydex sheath for it but thats no biggie.

In honor to the killed deer I never would use a cheap knife. But that one has something nevertheless. Thinking of the grip.. I think I don't like it as some others with this geip design. Droppoint like the Strongarm which I really like but a little fatter. Thanks for introducing this knife to me.

If I were looking for the single best knife in this size range, it's the Tex Creek Z-2329. In my opinion, it's a perfect thing. I'm the typical collector with drawers full of lined-up knives, and I'm always looking for that apex knife that makes the others obsolete, and I think Tex Creek made it. This Gerber has been in my "watchlist" for a while now, though.

It's also out these in S30V... It's a Gutting/Skinning/Disassembly of game animals Knife. It's NOT a camping/bushcraft/throwing or whacking logs type of knife. Yes, it WILL break if you start treating it like an Axe. It has a partner Caping Knife, and it comes in a Folder version too. With/without Gut Hook.
Made in Taiwan. The Older ones are marked Taiwan on the blade. These days? Who knows, could be Chicom since they aren't marked anymore.
Currently, I'm designing a leather sheath that will hold the Fixed, the Caping, and a Gut hook version of the folder all in one. An Elk Hunting Kill processing Kit pack. All using the older style Pear Wood handled knives. Gerber made a couple S30V 2 knife sets The Fixed and the Caper using Stag horn and another black Cocobolo Handles years back that came in a leather sheath, but Honestly, that sheath was Butt Ugly! Way too big and ugly. The Leather Sheath that the Single Fixed S30V version came in is remarkably lovely however! I managed to score a pair off eBay a couple years back. So I replaced the 2 old Non-retention Sleeves that they originally came in. Later Gerber changed to an amazingly hideous ugly nylon with plastic insert big giant triangle sheath. Likely Nepotism rearing it's ugly head. No other way to explain it...
The Modern wraparound sheath for the fixed looks a lot better, and is completely functional. Not anywhere as ugly as the triangle ones.

what budget knifes would u recommend for the camping/ whacking logs type of knife? thanks

    • @KandaJE
      @KandaJE 2 месяца назад +1

@@dfuzed_pluto8109 I would NEVER recommend using any knife to whack logs. In 50 years of camping I have never met ANY log that you couldn't whack with a purpose built log whacking tool called a Hatchet. Or you could even use the Bigger version, the AXE. Like Grandpa said: "Use the correct tool for the job".
Whacking logs with a knife, according to almost every knife manufacturer known to man, is considered 'Abuse' and voids all warranties. Don't believe everything you see on RUclips.
Go to Harbor Freight and get a $10 hatchet. The kind with the little slip on plastic edge guard. Why you would EVER need to "Split" wood for a camp fire is beyond my understanding of reality.

For $35 NO, the Cold Steel SRK-C for around the same price would run circles around that gerber. The SRK-C comes with a much better sheath and a much better steel, I have both and the gerber stays in the cabinet all the time....
