  • It's been a while since I said I would do it, but here it is! Thank you to username "MusicGodFromMSB" whose excellent tabs (on Ultimate-guitar.com) I used to help me learn the time signatures and intricate drum parts in this song. This might be best heard through headphones (but not at max level or R.I.P. at the beginning of the beatboxing).
    A few notes:
    When I said "of which there are 108," I meant 108 changes, or shifts, not 108 different time signatures.
    At 1:56 when I hesitated to switch the cards to indicate "3/4," the time does change at the moment I began to change it.
    At 6:49, the "7/8" card I drew was shown three eighth notes too late (a mistake I often made in my several attempts).
    The Dance of Eternity is a part of Dream Theater's album Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a memory released in 1999, and is the copyrighted property of its owner(s).

    The Messhuggah breakdown section isn't 11/4, it's a measure of 5/4 followed by 6/4. You can tell by the clear division of the beat of one. 11/4 would not have that.

    • @RobBoyette
      @RobBoyette  10 лет назад +114

      Actually I can see that. Good point. But in the part where its just the tom and guitars, the meter is arbitrary.

    • @gtrslinger
      @gtrslinger 10 лет назад +14

      nothing in music is arbitrary. It's absolute. It's ether correct or wrong. It's not 11/4, it's 5/4 and 6/4. Also I know the two people in the band. THEY WROTE IT, THEY TOLD ME, IT'S NOT 11/4.

    • @gtrslinger
      @gtrslinger 10 лет назад +4

      Fuck you Sean Cannon. Mangini NEVER said that I know. I've attended his classes in person you dumb fuck. On top of that, it's still not 11/4. Nothing you can do will change that. Portnoy...WHO WROTE IT....even confirmed it wasn't 11/4. GO FUCK YOURSELF. :d

      alright, so could you explain it to a layman, then? For all I know, the below number is a "segment" of the measure, and the above number is how many of those segments there are per measure. Such that there should be no difference between 5/4 + 6/4 and 11/4 beyond typographical, isn't that it? Or even 1/4 + 1/4 + ... + 1/4 eleven times?

    • @ManolitoMystiq
      @ManolitoMystiq 10 лет назад +52

      gtrslinger Indeed, as others have mentioned, it is arbitrary. Or are you going to say that the Mission: Impossible theme isn’t 5/4, but 6/8 + 2/4? The second notation would be more informative of how the beat is laid out, but it’s originally written as 5/4. And I get the 11/4 idea. The 'phrase' feels like one unit instead of 2 (just like the Mission: Impossible riff therefore being 5/4). The official fully transcribed score book including this song has it as 11/4, by the way (page 10). The transcription was done by Jordan Baker a.k.a. Bakerman, who knows his stuff and works closely with Dream Theater to create the most accurate of music scores. He even corrected The Master of Puppets 5/8 riff, claiming it was an 11/16th, with click-track proof.

    Man, kudos from Italy. I say this is the tipical "Hit or miss" thing. Or you nail it and it's awesome or you fail and sucks really hard. You're in the awesome group. Keep it comin'!
