Matt Crouch I’m sorry about that , but Portnoy is playing a lifetime better with this ugly drum set then Mangini with his monster drum set. Even if he plays on a hello kitty drum set is far beyond better!
3:54 I wish he would play like this on the album, putting more emphasis on the snare, the weird rhythmics on it in that particular section sounds so fucking awesome
@@djevon4853 on the album he does what I think are ghost notes (which is harder to play), I think he did'em here too but on this wacky drum set the snares were just out of control
It’s just only about to be honest and realistic and face the truth! Portnoy is in a restricted category of musicians, one of the few biggest influential artists, in other words a Legend.
Ridonkulous! I have tried to get into DT with Mike Mangini. He is a stupendous technical player and seems to be a really genuinely nice guy. But his sound and playing style are a little too perfect. Portnoy had all the chops, but he also has a looser feel that actually brought some personality to the table and makes some really technical stuff still sound human. And then he improvs on top of that. For me Dream Theater just can never be the same without Mike Portnoy. He was the heart of that band.
That's the thing though, watch the auditions, they didn't want someone who was going to improvise on the stuff. They wanted someone to play sheet music like a robot.
@mercyalex This is the real sound of drums without mics and a console. They actually sound very good friend. And the fact that you can make everything out of Portnoy's playing speaks about how tight and precise this dude is.
One of the most difficult songs to master as a drummer. I've been playing drums for twenty eight years and I can't play this song. Just listening to this nightmare of a song gives me nightmares .
Not trying to make you feel bad, but a kid named Avery Molek is on YT playing this song when he was only 8 years old. Look it up. Edit: I should also note that I can't play all of this song either, and I've been playing for about as long as you have.
I dont wanna be that guy but I learned this song in a week. Been playing for 8 years. Just dont count most of it and feel it instead. Forget the time signatures. It's that simple.
@Wedigar: He didn't really "leave". He just wanted the band some time off and clearly the other members didn't want the same idea. So, some part of it says that he was kicked out and the fact that he wanted to return and wasn't given a chance because they were already commited w/ MM suggest that there could be internal problems already.
you know how you always have some performance of amateur bands on campings for example, and then you hear people say: very good that they can remember all those songs! and you think: lol that cannot be so difficult. Well, this song is a appropriate song to say to: damn hard job to remember!
You may be right bro. I own the exact same kit. Starclassic Maple MIJ ... The one with the larger " screened" logo. Laquer finish. Not the Chinese model. All maple shells...These drums are cannons !! Definitely not the greatest recording but awesome to see Mike play these so powerfully in such an intimate setting too !
No matter how many times ive seen this song covered or played, I always stop and watch when one pops up lol
Same goes to me
.
Its over 10 years old but heres mine. ruclips.net/video/X4278ICFvKQ/видео.html
It's mandatory
Same!!
And I thought I was the only one who did that 😅
"Not bad. Now are you going to buy something?"
lol.made me laugh
WVsonofliberty lol
Does he need to?
nope, cuz you dont have my signature pro model snare! -_-
The best comment in music category
Say what you will about Mangini, I could watch Portnoy play all day!
I could watch them both, or any drummer of their caliber, play all day.
Matt Crouch Same
Matt Crouch Mangini cannot compose something like this, I don’t think. That is where is the real differential of Portnoy.
Matt Crouch I’m sorry about that , but Portnoy is playing a lifetime better with this ugly drum set then Mangini with his monster drum set. Even if he plays on a hello kitty drum set is far beyond better!
For me, layering Drums on a "done" new composition songs of Dream Theater, is much more difficult. Why?! well... Only True Musicians will understand.
If Mike Mangini ever quits Dream Theater, this guy should audition, he plays this song almost like he helped write it
😂😂
he looks like he could be Mike Portnoy's brother
Might just be Portnoy himself.. 😂😆
😂😂
And he's back!!
what makes him the best is that he composes these
Perfomed perfectly.
MP is a inspiration to every one! watch and learn young drummers ... this man is something
I agree. He's the next Neil Peart
To have that many folks watching that closely and not make a mistake? Genius!
I could watch this from infinite different angles and still be amazed each time
3:54 I wish he would play like this on the album, putting more emphasis on the snare, the weird rhythmics on it in that particular section sounds so fucking awesome

That's exactly he'd done at the studio version, but we can't just clearly hear it. Sorry for my bad english.
After the astonishing im wondering why i love drem theater and then... I remember this!
I've never listened to that thing and I never will. I love DT forever! The Ast... isn't Dream Theater
The astonishing blows
Look at those kids, they're in total awe!
such a joy watching the Maestro!
people who are fans of mike portnoy who are at this guitar center at that time must be special people
Oh god I remember i used to watch this when I was 5. Amazing video
this proves that a good musician (genius in this case) can play on a toy kit and still be able to sound good
+KoMar551 Haha. Please.
+KoMar551 Nope. He plays good, sound still sucks. A drummer even a good one, can't change the sound of a drum kit.
yeah, I'm not sure how much is the drum kit, and how much is the shitty microphone...my guess is, it's more of the latter.
This is definiteky not a bad drumkit. It is probably recorded from a phone, obviously not through microphones. That is why it sounds like this...
KoMar551 it's a good kit but the sound is recorded with a shity phone probaly
That bit is so damn complex in its simplicity its fucking boss. Portnoy is one of the best ever.
The Man's an absolute Beast of a Drummer
Lars Ulrich wants his snare back
Blak Deldo his snare wires were off. He turned them back on once the song really kicked in
Thats how real drums sound kid

I got to see him live at a guitar center in Fountain Valley, Ca around that time frame.
The best drummer,i love portnoy.you is number one.prof mike portnoy.
At this point and time, I'd like to see MP do this again. I hope he hasn't forgotten most of his DT epics.
He has to now
@@hayalaln2302he did it on drumeo channel. still got it ofc

Wow, I wish I could have been there!!!

What an absolute beast. He is so rock solid playing all this loopy stuff, never missing a beat.

I agree 1000% !
Portnoy just had the soul. He didnt have to think about it, he just played.
I'm a big Bonham fan, and this is as close to his feel and groove I've ever heard. New respect for Portnoy after watching this.
That's the thing though, watch the auditions, they didn't want someone who was going to improvise on the stuff. They wanted someone to play sheet music like a robot.

Great to see him play with no studio effects.... fucking great drummer this Mike person.
“Hey, Mike Portnoy is coming to do a drum demo today.”
“Cool. Set up the Fisher Price My First Drum Set.”
Absolutely outstanding
And now,my hero is coming home!
Every drummers done it, we leave the chains loose on the snare and forget to switch it back up! Love his surprised look when he forgot "oops" 😂

Got my vote
Fascinating 🤘🏾
Mike portnoy is the best
Good footage, thanks for adding it!
and even with that sound it's sounds awesome for me!
This tune is one massive drum solo with some guitars and other stuff thrown in.
@mercyalex This is the real sound of drums without mics and a console. They actually sound very good friend. And the fact that you can make everything out of Portnoy's playing speaks about how tight and precise this dude is.

The very famous; mind boggling "Shrink and Grow" composition.
I could never remeber all the song changes, Portnoy isn't a human.
Oh man!
Welcome home, Mike
He is the best drummer all of times👏🏻
Peart was superior in my opinion. Portnoy is cool though, no need for any competition really.
brilliant!
monstro! !!!!!👏👏👏👏
Genius!
portnoy has the best fills ever... man... i hope his replacement is at least half as good as him... \m/
A seminal album in the genre.
Pure genius

Wow,, that dude covers dream theater's song very accurate ..

Matt Fite It's mostly about memorizing diffrent odd signatures. The required techniques are still basic.
The KIng is back!!!!!
The best
The snare was off, but he adjusted it at 0:34 with his left hand...
wow! I didnt know Mick Foley is this good at drums
lmao
He completed his formation in Cactus Jack
this guy has a bright future. i see him as a great replacement if ever mangini quits! 😁✌️
so original and interesting. Best part of Portnoy returning is not seeing this same tired comment on 1000 videos.
i read your comment
then heard the snare
now i cant stop laughing :)
St Anger snare the best
but it is my friend! look at them do you see the 2 LP snares, the 2 sabian chinas. I recognise their sound without even looking..It's just the camera
Deus da batera!

If my eyes don't see wrong that is a Tama starclassic wich is a top of the line drumkit. Might be the camera that make it sound bad
