James came in too early at the end of the song. The band apparently wanted to play an extended instrumental section when James started singing, but they couldn't, so Mike just let loose with the closing drum solo.
Great example of how a drummer can keep himself from getting bored playing the same songs over and over again. He added a ton of things to the original track but didn’t sacrifice the beat. It’s obvious that he enjoys a challenge but still makes it look easy.
The natural ability to such complex music is what is most mind blowing and entertaining about Portnoy. His sound, style and approach is just so free. Like he doesnt have to think about the music while playing prog. Thats what makes music great, especially prog. Not a dead person counting numbers.
There’s no doubt that mike portnoy was the brains of dream theatre in every aspect...... his drumming and energy is exceptional ..... you can see it how he drives the band and takes command in sons of Apollo.
I only really listened to DT since Mangeni. MP had a real personality behind the kit. He would sing and get the crowd going. Now I can kind of understand why older dream theater fan say it's not the same.
Showmanship people! Effortlessly. Mangini looks and sounds like a robot. I can not wait till they come out with a new record with Portnoy being back. Heck yeah!
Showmanship ≠ musicality or skill. Mangini imo can do so much more than Portnoy in so many ways, just listen to songs like Pale Blue Dot and S2N. The only real downside to Mangini was his lackluster drum sound, which people like you confuse with no groove.
Summer of 1992 Pull Me Under was the new Z Rock radio channel in Detroit. I was 15. As a drummer - it was mind blowing. Then we got the cassette.... Woah! Portnoy was always an inspiration. I will say that I have really enjoyed Mangini era as well. I'm personally thankful to have been exposed to both great drummer in one phenomenal band.
Creo que no había persona más fan de Dream Theater que Mike Portnoy. Se le sale por los poros,es increíble como disfrutaba tocar en esta banda.aun hoy, tocando estas canciones con otras personas, se le nota lo mucho que le mueven el alma
John Pettruci and Mike Portnoy were the heart and soul of this band. And add Jordan Rudess into the mix and an amazing technical progressive masterpiece
It is amazing that Dream Theater has had such a long, and successful career, yet "Pull Me Under" from their 2nd album, "Images And Words," released way back in 1992, is the only song they ever did that got any kind of significant radio air play.
yeah I was at the show as well lol, seen them so many times in Wallingford always an amazing show, obviously miss Portnoy but yeah I thought that was so cool he wore a Uconn jersey
Kick drums usually have 2 internal mics In and 1 Out, sometimes with just 1 In 1 Out it's enough, maybe that kit had triggers so he didn't needed a mic on it.
This is the one song I've always wanted to see them perform live at a concert I was at... I saw them play "Wait for Sleep" / "Learning to Live" which is my other favorite in concert... but there's something about this track... I feel like it's the ultimate DT definitive performance....
Mike Portnoy sounds more aggressive on the kit and plays with heart and courage. We should give him more respect for crafting such songs that only a genius would create. Mike Portnoy is the only one I will listen too. his style of playing is always on the right direction when performing with the band.
He tunes all his heads really tight which gives him a more aggressive sound than he is actually playing with. I bought a Tama rockstar kit in 1999 and it came with a video of him setting up his whole kit. loved it. Ive been watching these guys forever as a boston kid
@@HDot4 - I had a set of those late 90's early 2000's Tama Rockstar drum sets. I did studio work with them a lot back then. GREAT sounding drums. I picked up the shell pack for $250, 10, 12, 14, 22. I wish I had never sold it.
I love his reactions when he misses his stick flip 😂😂😂. I believe that was the 3rd time he missed it during the 2nd song as he transitions over to his other kit 🤣
Caraio tiozão! Essa é pra poquíssimos! Minha fase metaleiro foi curta e há mais de 20 anos mas nunca ouvi batera mais criativa que essa no metal 🤘🏼 Mike Portnoy rules!
Mangini will never play with this much feel . Portnoy means every note he plays and weighs on it. When mangini plays like this, i will like DT again. edit: "play"
Alejandro Paz well mangini does play like this. And who’s to say mangini doesn’t have “feel”. Everyone drummer has a different feel to them and mangini does play with energy and weight.
Un deleite escuchar y ver tocar a Mike Portnoy, lástima sea tan agrandado y arrogante. Pero sólo Mike puede acompañar así en batería, cada arreglo que hace levanta a todos en la banda, verdadero maestro !!!
Mangini is an excellent drummer. This just shows what he doesn't have. They are so much better with Portnoy writing the drum parts. Mangini can play them flawless but he can' create.
To me, Mike Portnoy knew how far gone Labire's voice was/is and though he truly is a showman, he turned it up to 11 to compensate for the poop that Labrie's voice became.
I never noticed that you can hear Mike yell "Hey!", at 31:05. XD
Yea he was pissed!
kazz1896 What was he pissed at?
James came in too early at the end of the song. The band apparently wanted to play an extended instrumental section when James started singing, but they couldn't, so Mike just let loose with the closing drum solo.
@@avengedsoul6661 ah, so is this the same performance as the other video -"Pissed off Mike Portnoy"?
I love how they pulled that off and got past Labrie’s screw up!
Portnoy makes it seem so effortless, and he's got a really good sense of showmanship without going overboard.
i totally agree with this! one of the most charismatic performer i've seen

MP makes everything look easy. He is that great.
Mike Portnoy is the Soul of Dream Theater.
Of cause.

With a deep respect for mangini. This guy (portnoy) can show his shining soul while playing drums. And I can see very few persons show that in music.
I only really listened to DT since Mangeni.
MP had a real personality behind the kit.
He would sing and get the crowd going.
Now I can kind of understand why older dream theater fan say it's not the same.
Yeah, Manigi is no doubt a great drummer but he doesn't have the groove of Portnoy. Watching this vid helps me realize that more than ever.
What a glorious drum sound¡¡ The one and ONLY Mike Portnoy¡¡¡
21:33 ... when he got back the stick !!!!! Priceless footage .
God, I dream and long for the return of this man to Dream Theater, and I don't mean any disrespect to Mike Mangini.
Same here and I do love Mike Mangini but Portnoy is Portnoy.
his drum tone and drum fill give me goosbum
@@Neskin-fg1in Just sit back, look, listen and enjoy his performance on the SCORE DVD, simply mind blowing
FUCK!!! Magini..he will never replace Portnoy..EVER..NEVER..not in my books at least..MIKE IS A FUCKING DEITY..FUCKING ADMIT IT, FOLKS..
He is a bona fide living legend.
And today, he's proven he doesn't need this band.
Winery Dogs, and Sons Of Appollo are some of my favorites.

At 5:22 Mike lost one of his drum sticks and he cried. How cute😂😂😂

I've been watching Mike's videos for more than two hours !! He is the drummer of my dreams!!
Gotta love Mike's "Nerd Pushups". The finger pushing up the glasses. My kindred Nerd spirit.
Portnoy is a master of his craft no question about it. LabBrie sounds like an alcoholic grandmother on karaoke night
Both is good . Labries also good 😆😆😆😊
@@chaneppchannel_365 he is not anymore

21:33 that moment when Portnoy successfully gets his left stick back from the audience..... ❤️🔥sooo satisfactory 🤩
Jordan back the stick!?
The best of Drummer of Dream Theater for all time is Mike Portnoy !!!
I was at that show, crazy seeing footage of it 14 years later!
I think Mike Mangini is one of the single best drummers on the planet but I have to admit that MPortnoy brings more to the DT platform overall.
Mike: the number one of the numbers one!
It's amazing, you can actually hear Myung!
Hearing this just makes me want to get behind the kit again. Thanks for the memories MP
Till this moment I've never realized how much differently he played some parts live (in oppose to the album version). Both versions are cool though.
The creativity, rhythm and feel is just incredible. Raw talent perfected!
21:12 - 21:35
Labrie is dying on the stage and Petrucci sounds like a bee, but it is good to see Portnoy having fun on the drums.
there is pretty much no left kick volume at all
The golden days of Myung's bass sound prominence in the tracks.
came here after watching the luna park video…portnoys playing feels a lot more natural.
Portnoy is Dream Theater.
Portnoy and Petrucci are Dream Theater.
...and Rudess
Myung!!
Portnoy and Carey the beast on drums ever
Mike "DrumMaster" Portnoy!
🤘🏻🇧🇷
Dream Theaterに戻ってきて欲しい。

King Crimsonなんか今はドラム3人もいるんだぜw?
DTもなんとか上手い事ならないもんかねぇ……。
U can tell he has the love n passion thats in him.such s amazing, talented ,unique player he is.Cool video thanks for showing it.
Just stumbled upon this video - I’m somewhere in the first few rows. I remember him wearing the Uconn jersey at the Wallingford CT show!
yeah I was at the show as well lol, seen them so many times in Wallingford always an amazing show, obviously miss Portnoy but yeah I thought that was so cool he wore a Uconn jersey
That drum tech is fired, he forgot to mic up the second bass drum lol
Kick drums usually have 2 internal mics In and 1 Out, sometimes with just 1 In 1 Out it's enough, maybe that kit had triggers so he didn't needed a mic on it.
Что сказать, Спасибо Майк, дай Бог, радуй нас своей Музыкой, Ещё раз, Огромное Спасибо Вам👍🤝🙏🏻
Mike fixing his glasses every few mins I feel ur pain lol
Labrie even when he says at the end "thank you good night" ,sounds bad
Hands-down one of the best drummers that has ever lived
There's a crab in James Labrie pants, that's why he sings Just like that
Mike is a beast!
Where's the microphone on the left kick?????????
Inside.
This is the one song
I've always wanted to see them perform live at a concert I was at... I saw them play "Wait for Sleep" / "Learning to Live" which is my other favorite in concert... but there's something about this track... I feel like it's the ultimate DT definitive performance....
This man is mentor and soul of dream theather.
I'm missing the pingy sound of his ride cymbal haha
Dude, Mangini's ride is super pingy! My favorite types of ride cymbal.
I feel sorry for the beating the sound man probably got for not recording the left bass drum XD

I could be mistaken but I have this really strong feeling that Portnoy has played these songs a few times.
so much skill and nice to see him having fun.. all worth it.. i don't get the whole dream theater thing though.. he needs his own band..
