Mangini can’t help but be calculating and schooled in his drum playing. Mike Portnoy can’t help but be emotional and have heart when he plays. It shows. This is Dream Theatre. Carry on Wayward Son...MP.
I’ve seen a lot of drummers 🥁 and Mike Portnoy has the best licks! 🥁 the way he plays- his style is my favorite kind of playing!🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁- U THE MAN mIKE!
I used to watch this video all the time a few years ago. Just got finished watching Mike learn Tool's Pneuma on Vimeo. I know people really love Dance of Eternity as one of the most challenging FINAL BOSS level of songs for basically all the instruments there, but this one has always hit me in a different way emotionally. Just a badass performance. Never got to see him in live setting but I'm sure those were some badass concerts. Peart, Carey, and Portnoy are my 3 fav drummers. The LeBron James, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird of drummers IMO
Legendary album with what might be Mike's best performance. His drumming elevates the songs to another level. A mix of skill and creativity that is unmatched.
I like how he learned the drum charts while on lunch break and then played the song note for note in front of the camera crew! He's got mad skills!! LOL ...seriously, nothing more natural than Mike Portnoy playing the drums...like Michael Jordan playing basketball...they're in a league of their own and masters of their domain!
OMFG😳😲😲 How could you write such a creative, tastefull and technically difficult drum-track??? The great debate is definetely one of my favourite DT-songs and watching Portnoy playing it with such a verve is an event!
One of my favourite DT songs, this one. It's also one of the best MP drum parts IMHO. The way it interlocks with the guitar parts and the vocal is masterful.
I just have to add this .. this song is 13.5 minutes and full of changes and complexity. I figured I'd off-handedly watch this video and see that Mike would not be able to play at the level that's on the album or that the magic would be lost. Portnoy increased the magic. He is powerful. And now I'm gonna go sit in the corner with the funny hat ..
Probably only MP from DT was able to create something so perfect in its complexity. Every note is in place with mathematical precision, and at the same time the drums simply sing. I've been listening to this song since it was released in 2002 and I never skip a song, I always listen to the last note.

It's like watching Rembrandt paint a picture or Michaelangelo sculpt David or paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or Grinling Gibbons carve one of his woodcarving masterpieces. Just beautiful to see somebody perform their craft at such a high level.
It is like the recipe for brisket Mangini is the great chef in the very exclusive restaurant , perfectly balanced. Portnoy is grandma's brisket, at the kitchen table with family, served with a smile. Enjoy the meal friends.
Im amazed at his hand and feet movements and all the intricate fills and patterns. Hes like an advanced chess player with the memory of all the various moves. Hes also so ambidextrous, his hands are working on separate rhythmsand movements..
Amazing performance love the energy all the off time stuff that he plays so effortlessly will always shock me no matter how good it jumps like get this guy always makes me want to keep playing
Say what you will about Portnoy. He's the heart of Dream Theater.. always will be. Maybe some day he will make a return if they forgive him...which they might because Portnoy invented all these drum diddies for dream theater from scratch with his style... Mangini is doing a great job tho but Mangini will always play like Mangini and Portnoy will always play like Portnoy.. Mangini will never emulate him completely. There is no bad blood between the two drummers.. It just is what it is.
Rob Meek The thing is, DT were not looking for another Portnoy, they were looking for a replacement who could meet the same standards, not be the same person. Mangini definitely met his standards technically and musically. But is different in many ways, which what makes him good and an excellent choice for DT. In My opinion: Portnoy is one of my favourite drummers, and A Nightmare to Remember remains one of my favourite songs to drum too. Mangini is just something else, The Enemy Inside is a drumming masterpiece and is my favourite DT song to date.
There’s s nothing to forgive him about leaving the band, he did what he felt was the right thing to do and that’s ok. I have more respect for him now and I sure would not want him to return nor that’s what’s going to happen. One thing is for sure, old dream theater was is and will always be one of my all time favorite bands and may I dare say one of the best bands of all times.
Portnoy is my greatest influence and his parts are technical, but groovy enough for someone who'd been playing Chilli peppers and foo fighters their whole life to get into and overtime figure out how to play dream theater... He's got a good balance of technicality and groove. John Frusciante just came back to RHCP which was deemed something that wouldn't happen, so who knows.
It's never ending. The stick twirls, the sweat bands, the chimes..the deep roto toms, the jersey that has your own last name on it..oh almost forgot the mirror

He wrote it. So.
You can say that about Mangini.
When the drums in your songs are so interesting they become drum instruction videos.
I always thought this song showcased some of MP's BEST drumming.
James Russo, this and Glass Prison are some of his best drum lines. Actually, many of his songs are just beastly. It’s hard to choose.
