I find acoustic guitar so much easier to play tastefully than any electric guitar. I started playing on acoustic and have mostly played acoustic over the years. It's something I'll have to work on over time, the electric is amazing for access to highest frets, legato, sweeps and so forth.
Most people have such a bad sense of timing, it's really peculiar. Maybe we're all just biased because 4/4 is so easy, but goddamn; get it together, humanity xD
Watching prog fans try to headbang during a concert is hilarious. Some people have no sense of tempo at all, it's hard to listen or see that. Any prog artist I like, I've listened to their songs enough to analyze any change up. You would think that every prog fan would do the same, considering how difficult prog is to play. Don't meet anyone that loves prog but doesn't play any instruments.
That formula didn't work after Portnoy gone.. No questions about that Petrucci is my most favourite guitarist.. But DT as a band is shit now.. Portnoy was the guy whose playing could cover over all the instruments..
Agreed all I see online with Petrucci is all class no attitude and just fun to listen too the guy could be your cool School teacher he does not have that Dbag Metal tough guy persona.
why do people bombard like this? he comes out and immediately "over here john!", "I love dream theater john, thank youuu" "hey john, let's have a meaningful conversation!" applause is awesome...every musician loves it...but let the guy catch his breath...have some pride for fucksake
The problem is that people feel like they're competing for his attention, and this is when people get weird/inconsiderate. In small settings, it's not hard to get your questions answered, but realistically not everyone there will get attention from him so they get desperate. Hence why they don't do "hang out" meet and greets anymore like many other "less popular" bands do.
He reminds me of someone’s cool older brother. Nice dude. One of the sickest guitar players out there. Dream theater is hit and miss for me but I seriously respect petrucci. The guy has put the work in and is at that level where everything seems easy.
+JgHaverty To enter this clinic you should at least know how to clap 4/4 time correctly. All of the audience failed, so they gave up on the requirements.
u're right i've never seen any musician like him.he just don't have any pride for who he is,very polite n humble.he doesn't even use the rough words such as 'fucking', 'shit', 'hell' cause he is man of god...
his style? He and Jordan Rudess (the keyboardist for DT) did a one night only concert called "A night with Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci" where they played instrumentals. I think that between LTE, DT and this album its awfully hard to find a "style" he doesn't cover....
went to a clinic of his one time at a GC years ago, and our guitarist raises his hand to ask a question and John goes "yea go ahead" and my guitarist asks jokingly, "is it true than when you play a million notes per second people die?" everyone starts laughing right? Petrucci without skipping a beat laughs and responds "I don't know, no ones ever lived to tell about it" and we all started cracking up hahahahahah
Too many players think sweeping is the be all and end all. It isn't! It can be a very 'boxed in' technique.Vibrato is 'the' most important technique and it doesn't matter how fast or slow you can play. If your vibrato ain't down you ain't shit!
I didnt say they werent important I said vibrato is the most important. No matter what techniques you have ( or havent) in your arsenal vibrato is the one that separates the men from the gods. This is so taken for granted these days and the reason a lot of modern shredders sound like robots (Pettrucci obviously does not fall into this category). Too many people focus on the advanced techniques. All the 80's shredders had killer vibrato (yngwie, gilbert, howe, lynch)
Ian Guest I agree with you. I know this great shredder, but his vibrato just sounds amateurish, which makes his entire playing sounds shitty. If someone plays a easy solo, but with solid vibrato it will still sound amazing. It's always the same too haha, they move their entire hand instead of this fluid motion
awesomeness. was at this workshop also and recorded only his songs. so much for guitar center telling us to not record and take pictures. screw authority! thanks!
Great video quality! I wish whoever was filming was able to get a board feed for the audio. He’s one of the cleanest players out there. The audio definitely doesn’t do it justice the way I’m sure it sounded being there. Still very appreciative for the post. 🤘🏼
That beard is total bad ass!!! Only he kinda looks like one of the guys you see on the beard dye packets LOL!! Look at the size of his arms and chest nowadays too!!
He says that MusicMan was willing to do a 7 string version (meaning the prior company was not willing?). He had a 7 string Ibanez. Does he mean that Ibanez didn't want to sell a JP signature 7 string to the public? I've read that Ibanez didn't want to give him piezo either, but there are Ibanez picasso guitars with piezo. He had a custom one that was fixed bridge (6 string) with piezo. He used it to record Home.
Brenden Holmes it's really not that hard for someone like him. Go look at between the buried and me play their full album Colors live and find me one single mistake. There is no excuse. He is a prog guitarist, he should not be struggling with a prog song...
There is like 170 time changes in that one song, it's hard to keep in time when playing it all at once in one take. He's said many times he records in sections, not the whole song at once.
Awful crowd...what an annoyance that must be every time you have to appear somewhere. BUT LOOK, he’s got a king of tone back there. That’s fucking awesome. I don’t know why but I’d never pictured John with one of those. My favorite drive pedal by a long shot...
carlosjb2002 what i can remember is that he said, if you have your guitar set up how it supposed to be (professionally).. its going to hold the tune very well..
8:10 "Clap while it's still 4/4 motherfuckers"
Shafin Nahian ikr
"playing acoustic is like leg day at the gym"

They couldn't even clap along to the 4/4 lmao
I guess they all shut up after the first line of 7/8 lolololol

Such a nice, patient and humble guy. So much respect for him. It's like he has zero ego. One of the reasons he's my all time favorite.
He's bigger than the Portnoy's drum kit.
That formula didn't work after Portnoy gone.. No questions about that Petrucci is my most favourite guitarist.. But DT as a band is shit now.. Portnoy was the guy whose playing could cover over all the instruments..
Well, yeah
Probably one of the nicest guys in metal, and one of the most humble as well. It's impossible to hate the guy.
Totally agree with you! I never heard him said a bad words or else! Very great man!
+Refan Jansen I don't know dude I heard him bury Paul Gilbert in a lesson video. Oh wait that was a parody video. LOL!
so true, just great example that you can be a "nerd nice guy" and metal af
SlickEnz you cant hate dream theater members 😁
Agreed all I see online with Petrucci is all class no attitude and just fun to listen too the guy could be your cool School teacher he does not have that Dbag Metal tough guy persona.
i love this guy more than my uncle
I love this guy more than my parents
I love this guy more than me
i hope you are not jake bowen^^
madmaxbell haha!
Rodo Wnesi ahsuahsuiahsiauhsaiushaus
He is way too humble... He deserves what he is today... XD
Dude XS well said man
Dude XS I met him at his guitar camp, and when I told him he was my idol and inspired me to play guitar he seemed surprised was like, oh wow, cool
why do people bombard like this? he comes out and immediately "over here john!", "I love dream theater john, thank youuu" "hey john, let's have a meaningful conversation!"

"You must be tired! Hyuck Hyuck"
John Petrucci's secret to maintaining big arms at an old age? we think he lifts in 7/4
Old age? He's in his 40s in this video...
He’s not really old
hes not old
nice guitar Hagrid
Hagrid: Oh thanks Voldemort
Wow.. to be fans of Dream Theater/ John Petrucci and they can't keep a beat xD
I've so many times heard the dance of eternity. but every time I hear he's playing the dance of eternity I always get a goosebumps.
can we talk about how perfect that pinch harmonic was at 24:08 lol
You can actually study human anatomy seeing him play.
On his left arm you can clearly see all the nerves and muscles contracting and relaxing.
4:54 John: *Plays a note
Crowd: *"WOOOOOO"*
Not even a note, he just turned up the volume of the guitar 😂
How does he fit his arms through the shirt?
Tomé Silva His shirts fit around his arms not the other way around.
+Tomé Silva I think they have to make the shirt around him.
Y'all are crazy he ain't that big. He's built but he's not excessively lol
Richard Martinez - I can't hear you over the sound of JP's biceps.
+Yakushii haha get outa here. Giving him too much credit lol
JOHN IS REALLY MASTER OF ETERNITY-PLAYER!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOHN !!!
(born on July 12 1967)
He is such a nice, polite guy
Children, this is a god
lol @ the crowd trying to clap along with the Dance of Eternity. Instant fail.
Blake Williams They hadn't even gotten to the difficult bit yet! 😂
Still 4/4 lol
Porn
A room filled with musicians and they can’t clap in time. Fucking pathetic.
When that kid shouted out, Petrucci looked so creeped out XD
Darrell Knight i saw this video like 7 months ago and i still cringe t the start
minute pls?
Abba235xx ty dude
And he looks annoyed af after the kid's shout 😂
hey don't insult me!! I was only a little kid and I was stupid to shout out

Al Qaetrucci - The Stance of Eternity
hate when people cant clap in time hahaha so fucking awful lol
+JgHaverty To enter this clinic you should at least know how to clap 4/4 time correctly. All of the audience failed, so they gave up on the requirements.
well, clapping in time with Dream Theater is basicly impossible. Especially Dance of Eternity
Richard Poschmann Not really.
+Crimson Sunrise How'd you go about clapping sixteenth notes for several measures in a row? :/
Azortharion H 4 stroke Moeller.
such a nice normal guy.
agreed! rare quality ...
u're right i've never seen any musician like him.he just don't have any pride for who he is,very polite n humble.he doesn't even use the rough words such as 'fucking', 'shit', 'hell' cause he is man of god...
I never cared for his style of playing, But I have to agree he really seems like a very nice and honorable person. That I am very impressed with that.
his style? He and Jordan Rudess (the keyboardist for DT) did a one night only concert called "A night with Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci" where they played instrumentals. I think that between LTE, DT and this album its awfully hard to find a "style" he doesn't cover....
It's a joy to hear him speak but for those who can't wait, just go ahead: 7:53

one of my dream guitars!
He looks to his left and say "WILL ONLY SHOW CHORDS TO YOU GUITAR NOOBS" when the lead part kicks in he will face infront ahaha

I've normally never been a fan of his Music Man guitars, but this new model looks gorgeous
Good Guy JP: Uses phone to take care of his fans' throats.
Petrucci é o cara!!

What's with the comedy beard"? Is he on the run?
He put some beef on. Still a great guy!
11:00 Rick from percussion had a simultaneous eye and eargasm. He called on sick to work the next day even though he was already off.
Great video from John as usual. To bad GC no longer has a re-seller contract with Mesa Boogie, i.e. no comments from John at all about his amps.
that's aint john petrucci... that's vin diesel in long wig and heavy mustache!
He uses the same dialogue in every guitar center...😁
Metal Jesus with Muscles
Bodybuilder guitar player
That beard is total bad ass!!! Only he kinda looks like one of the guys you see on the beard dye packets LOL!! Look at the size of his arms and chest nowadays too!!

There was one custom one they made for him, it wasn't a regular production model.
Brazil! fuck yeah
Cool stuff...
That is one cool bad ass guitar
He seems to be laboring during the guitar/synth unison bit
JT91 I mean, you've played the dance of eternity before right? It's fucking exhausting even for the master himself.
Brenden Holmes it's really not that hard for someone like him.

Yes, Mr. Petrucci. In Germany: 5 times!!!" :-)))
The last question was so good and the video ends with no response
Nice cover!
Man that would've been perfect to help me see how he plays some parts but you're on his side...
Such a bad angle i wanted to se his fingers not his massive bicep 💪🏼. Not hating just pointing that out for next time. Thanks for the vid. 🎸
