Put 10k miles on our Luxury + so far. Upgraded from a Genesis GV80. Very happy with GX! Smooth, quick, sweet look. Massage seats, ventilated seats, cool box, pararoma roof, etc. If you need extra stitching and extra ambient lighting, go with Genesis/Hyundai. If you want true quality and reliability, go with the Lexus.
My assessment is based on what I observed at the Auto Show in California. For comparing this SUV, I recommend examining others. To attend, both my wife and I had to pay a $30 fee, and I was particularly eager to personally see the Lexus GX due to the hype surrounding it as a large off-road SUV. Before I outline the positives and negatives, I want to express my anticipation spanning decades for the GX to unveil a new design. However, I am disappointed with what I encountered. Pros: * The shape is commendable, featuring a perfect boxy design akin to competitors such as the Defender, Jeep Cherokee, and GMC. * While the central infotainment system is not groundbreaking, it maintains consistency with other Lexus models, which is acceptable. * Cons: * There are numerous drawbacks. The model I viewed exceeded $77k and lacked the ML sound system. * The absence of a panoramic sunroof, now a standard feature in modern vehicles, detracts from the luxurious experience. * The panoramic sunroof in the Luxury+ model is underwhelming and seems to mimic the idea from the Venza, which has been on the market for over six years. * The quality of leather and interior falls short compared to other SUVs in the same price range. Even the Toyota Highlander boasts superior interior quality. * The exterior feels excessively plastic, particularly upon contact with the bumper, hood, and other body panels. * Leather quality across all trims is subpar. * Fuel economy poses a significant issue in 2024, averaging only 17 mpg. * Many materials exude a cheap feel, failing to deliver a luxurious experience. * If one opts for all available options on the Lexus GX 550, it may be preferable to choose the LX 600, which offers a higher level of luxury and power. * For a better depiction of luxury, consider examining the Infiniti QX80: ruclips.net/video/NMzD7nLQlDY/видео.html I've been a longtime enthusiast of this SUV, but now, even surpassing $80k plus tax, it's hardly worth the investment. In 2024, there's a myriad of alternative options I've contemplated, including the Ford F150 Electric, Rivian, Cybertruck, GMC Denali AT4, Sequoia, and the Volkswagen Atlas Off-Road version, among others, boasting advanced technology and commendable qualities. Toyota and Lexus seem to be marketing very basic vehicles under the guise of reliability. Many individuals I conversed with at the auto show shared my sentiment that the GX 550 pales in comparison to the 460 in terms of quality, feeling cheaply constructed. Toyota and Lexus dealers hyping these vehicles on social media to attract buyers. This SUV no longer epitomizes luxury, not by a long shot. If you disregard reliability and juxtapose it against brands like BMW, Audi, and Land Rover, it's disheartening to witness its decline. Purchasing this vehicle entails enduring it for another six years solely to mitigate depreciation, while numerous other automakers are already introducing superior and more advanced technology. At present, I must explore alternative options, as this SUV is not worth $95k out of the door, if you're fortunate enough. Best wishes with your new purchase. Just bear in mind, many individuals are compensated for endorsing Toyota and Lexus brands, and I've encountered numerous instances of Toyota dealers leveraging social media to generate interest in these vehicles. In conclusion, this is merely my perspective. Enjoy your new purchase
I knew this would be so disappointing 😁 The biggest Toyota hater me kept saying everywhere that this would happen. Everyone laughed yet when they saw the end result they didn’t acknowledge that I was right
After experiencing Genesis and even the new Infiniti QX80, Lexus really needs to step up their interior materials. Soft touch plastic just won’t cut it anymore when others are using stitched leather. They could’ve also used a faux stitching to cut cost, but they didn’t even do that.
The only thing I cant stand is the lack of a flat platform windowsill armrest like its Land Cruiser counterpart has. That’s where my left arm/ elbow naturally rest, and in the GX it aggressively slopes downward. I had an RDX back in the day with a similar design and I thought to myself, never again… It’s the little things like that which make a big difference in the everyday livability of a vehicle.
We had a Ford company car that was like that once. The regular arm rest on the door was too far from the seat. Literally no where to rest your arm. Drove us mad!
It’s hard to qualify vehicle as having a “luxurious” interior these days when a $30k hyundai sonata has leather, heated and cooled seats, dual 12” screens, self driving tech, ambient lighting, moonroof, good sound deadening, upgraded audio system, etc. I think the GX is fine inside. Luxury comes from build quality and materials, as well as sound deadening, and a powertrain that gives you ample power when you need it and fades into the background when you dont. The GX fits that description well I think.
@jr1885 I've seen multiple comparisons of the two and though people have said the GX doesn't feel as luxurious as it should, it still has a nicer feel and materials compared to the LC.

Yes and no. Simple research goes a long way. Tundra is assembled in Texas. There was a recall due to machine debris entering the engine during the manufacturing process. The gx is assembled in Japan. So same engine different manufacturing plant meaning no recall

The GX is a great value in its segment. I saw it in person a couple of months ago. It is a sharp vehicle. However, Lexus is smart. They have created a solid lineup for their SUVs. I think the TX is a better buy for most families, while the GX is more of an enthusiast car.
The GX isn’t a great value at all. You can get a GMC Yukon AT4 with 4-corner air suspension and a much better packaged/practical interior for much less or a Denali for about the same money. This is the farthest thing from an enthusiasts product and this ain’t even the off-road targeted trim which means this expensive one ain’t going off road either.
@nicholasbabeaux2052 LOL, yes he did! Time stamp 26:30, "...and it's a good engine." Nothing more to say here folks! This engine may not have the same problem (2024 so far isn't part of the Tundra recall) but I believe a bit of elaboration on this point would be helpful.
You guys should get a premium plus and compare it to this. See if it’s worth the extra 10 grand. Definitely doesn’t look like an interior of an 80 grand car.
Here's my opinion, if you want an upscale off-roader, this is a fabulous choice, I like the Land Rover Defender too but I hear they are unreliable (ik the GX might have issues rn but knowing Lexus in the next 1-2 years most of the problems should be fully sorted), however if you are exclusively driving on-road and don't intend to off-road, there are other better options (some of which are cheaper than the GX too)
I like this. All other SUV’s have this leather that you have to clean every 3-5 years soft touch for the win almost never have to clean it just a simple wipe with interior cleaner and none of that leather cleaner and conditioner stuff. Just functional I like it
@@naveenthemachine I never said they wanted an interior filled with cheap plastics, I simply stated that I liked it because I HAVE one in my driveway, it’s easy to clean the soft touch compared to leather.
Love the exterior, but the interior just doesn't match. I'm not a Toyota/Lexus fan, but this design is gorgeous and I can't deny being drawn to it. But that interior is just a big let down. Especially at the price
*Lexus GX is always the answer!* ❤ *And for the love of all things holy: set the tire PSI at 33psi COLD... dealers are notorious from cranking up the psi to 40-50psi* 😂
Do you know if getting a Luxury plus and just swapping out for Overtrails tires/wheels would solve the ride quality issues? Or is the lack of EKDSS on Luxury Plus the issue?
@contrariangrin many reviewers are not establishing the COLD tire psi on these GX550s... dealer/press vehicles may have their PSI incorrectly raised... best bet is to take an actual test drive a dealer to verify psi and ride quality
Lexus/Toyota loyalist and apologist here. You’re gonna praise whatever they put out and that’s obvious because this vehicle is an embarrassment in this day and age for a $80,000 luxury product.
This model was desperately in need of a refresh, especially the interior. I'm on the fence however as the outgoing exterior was unique for the segment. This model now looks like a Defender wanna be however is still easily distinguishable as a Toyota product and is eerily similar to the new Land Cruiser (no surprises there, of course). The price is the deal breaker for me. Too many amenities are lacking, even on the highest trim level and the slam when the rear glass closes is shocking. Competition is stiff and provides more in this segment and Lexus should at least have offered optional soft close doors, rear ventilated seats, and metal speaker covers. This is really just a classy tow truck for your boat, RC, or trailer. The abysmal mileage figures will only decline further with a heavy payload so it better have a huge gas tank. All that said, GX devotees will love it as the older models pale in comparison so they'll probably see decent sales in the US (unless gas prices skyrocket). The LX600 would be the Lexus choice for this segment given, at the end of the day, you're spending six figures for a fully optioned GX.

Why is it so hard to get a reliable, comfortable (soft riding) and spacious luxury SUV these days? The German are all after sporty firm rides and Lexus can’t tame the truck chassis… the roads here are all massive potholes and luxury means I don’t want to feel them.
I'm searching for that too, on the EV side. Shocking how little choices we have. What I found so far: A) BMW iX: Super ugly but insanely comfortable seats. Tons of soft padding and and just coddles you. Haven't driven it but I've read multiple reports on how quiet and comfortable the ride is. B) Mercedes EQS SUV: Just watched an Out of Spec motoring video where they race a Tesla Model X, Rivian R1S and EQS SUV from Colorado to Vegas. You can clearly hear the interior noise levels. EQS was dead quiet inside, Model X slightly noisier, and R1S MUCH noisier. C) F-150 Lightning: I'm not a truck fan in general, but I'm seeing endless reports on how the truck's indy suspension results in an old style cadillac floating ride. It's also super quiet as well. This is at the top of my list with EQS SUV a close 2nd.
Blows my mind how Toyota can mess up this bad and people consider it a “grand slam”. The cargo area behind the third row cubbies weren’t even large enough to fit a license plate in there. There are Nissan Sentras more practical and better thought out than this “large luxury SUV”.

@@flamesfan2635 he mentioned the platform is shared but nothing more. We all know the engine is a ticking bomb.
@@KaiSpeedshop then don't get it. Lexus doesn't care if you buy it or not
You guys should get a premium plus and compare it to this. See if it’s worth the extra 10 grand. Definitely doesn’t look like an interior of an 80 grand car.
Does this GX or TX have a smoother/softer ride quality? Thank you for your attention in advance!
Very handsome suv
Here's my opinion, if you want an upscale off-roader, this is a fabulous choice, I like the Land Rover Defender too but I hear they are unreliable (ik the GX might have issues rn but knowing Lexus in the next 1-2 years most of the problems should be fully sorted), however if you are exclusively driving on-road and don't intend to off-road, there are other better options (some of which are cheaper than the GX too)
Hi, in comparison to previous gx 460, thoughts on the ride with the gx 550 - different, same, etc? ty
I like this. All other SUV’s have this leather that you have to clean every 3-5 years soft touch for the win almost never have to clean it just a simple wipe with interior cleaner and none of that leather cleaner and conditioner stuff. Just functional I like it
Are you seriously going to freak out about that at this price point?😂
@@naveenthemachine I mean there’s some people out there that are picky as hell lol
@@jamesyang482 so people spending 80-100k want an interior filled with cheap plastics?🤣
They may as well get a cheaper Toyota
@@naveenthemachine I never said they wanted an interior filled with cheap plastics, I simply stated that I liked it because I HAVE one in my driveway, it’s easy to clean the soft touch compared to leather.
Always great and thorough review! Thank you for creating such a quality video🥂🥰
Love the exterior, but the interior just doesn't match. I'm not a Toyota/Lexus fan, but this design is gorgeous and I can't deny being drawn to it. But that interior is just a big let down. Especially at the price
I want one 😍
*Lexus GX is always the answer!* ❤ *And for the love of all things holy: set the tire PSI at 33psi COLD... dealers are notorious from cranking up the psi to 40-50psi* 😂
Do you know if getting a Luxury plus and just swapping out for Overtrails tires/wheels would solve the ride quality issues? Or is the lack of EKDSS on Luxury Plus the issue?
@@contrariangrin it'd be better for sure. luxury plus has AVS which helps
@@G-Rated nice try naveen
The LX600 would be the Lexus choice for this segment given, at the end of the day, you're spending six figures for a fully optioned GX.
i like the roof rack , where can i get it. looks it is attached on the Original screw holes
When I get my CDL I have to buy one of these.
Luxury Land Cruiser
very nice 7 seater family vehicle.
If you dump the third row how does the parcel shelf work or does it not have one
Dang, the telluride is so much better for the cost

@@brittanyb5942 they’re 35-55k, I got one fully loaded for 51k out the door. Look for deals, don’t over pay.
Also, the “self drive” and all other features of Kia are some of the best out there. Take look at reviews and drive one and you’ll see. I was fully ready to pay a lot more for the Lexus until I learned these things. I can afford a whole lot more, but I need a car that fits adults in the third row and still fit a stroller & gear in the cargo area
@@brittanyb594235-55k range. I paid 51k out the door fully loaded. Look for deals, don’t pay sticker.
Kia’s “self drive” tech is some of the best, you can clearly see they took inspiration from Tesla but it doesn’t have a camera on you which is great. Three comfortably in the third row and room for cargo, it’s all around better
The interior does not look as high quality as even some Genesis, Mazda, and even Kia products.
A $65k GMC Acadia Denali is more luxurious and even has superior technology compared to this fully loaded Lexus GX. The Acadia also is more practical with better cargo space behind the third row. How are they able to manage this for $10,000 less? Lexus is a scam.
It’s a mixed bag at the end of the day. Some good, some bad. If you don’t tow or off-road often there are better choices.

Glad I picked the TX
Given the price, interior looks more utilitarian than luxury
Too funny that there are a lot of poor bastards hating in the comments, yet Lexus is selling each and one of these.

Disagree on moonroof. I’ve never once opened a sunroof (it’s pointless with aircon), just an item that breaks. This type of moonroof makes much more sense for 90 percent of people who never open it.
But it may be reasonable at this price point. Look at the domestic truck prices…same if not more for a work truck!

That's a very close door to the seats in the third row. That's a missed opportunity. The space between the third row and cargo is extremely small
Is there any reason to want push&hold over 1-touch seat folding?
Please try to do 0-60 test on level road only.
All that plastic interior reminds me of the Honda element.
it sucks until the engine issue gets resolved
Interior needs a bit of luxury refinement. Dash, doors and steering wheel looks cheap for the price point.
None of the new Lexus interiors look expensive or luxurious at all, I guess they are now only serving their most loyal customer base.
What I found so far:
A) BMW iX: Super ugly but insanely comfortable seats.
Huh? No they aren’t. The X7 and GLS ride like a cloud with their standard air suspensions. The only exception is the GLS 63 which much firmer.
❤ love it. Lexus hit a grand slam. Great review sir. Keep up the good work.
A grand slam with the bases empty.
Blows my mind how Toyota can mess up this bad and people consider it a “grand slam”. The cargo area behind the third row cubbies weren’t even large enough to fit a license plate in there. There are Nissan Sentras more practical and better thought out than this “large luxury SUV”.

In the other hand Mercedes bmw and Audi they are not reliable as a Lexus and their maintenance are expensive compared to other brands I know their interior looks amazing but not very reliable, plastic materials and expensive.

You nailed this review. Ever time, you said you wished Lexus could have done better. You were absolutely correct. Too much soft molded plastics in this truck. The only people who will like this vehicle are NEW lexus owners. Any OG owner will find this subpar. The interior feels horrendous cheap. Lexus needs to get serious before its too late.
