    ___
The events that have transpired in the last few days with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman being fired by the board of OpenAI are absolutely wild. We discuss Microsoft's recent strategic moves concerning OpenAI. We analyze how these actions have altered the landscape of AI, especially in the context of business and technology. The video will offer insights into how these developments are shaping not just a single company, but the trajectory of artificial intelligence globally.
My goal in making this video is to explain what happened at OpenAI, the future of AI and Sam Altman's impact on it, and discuss the timeline of events that transpired with OpenAI's Board. The video gets into the future of AI, and is a full breakdown of everything that happened at OpenAI. If you watch this my goal is for you to understand everything that just happened at OpenAI completely.

Update! My video is already outdated. Sam Altman is returning to OpenAI with a brand new board and Microsoft's full support. Details - twitter.com/sama/status/1727207458324848883
I won't make another video, because the purpose of this video was to talk about how we got here. I think we accomplished that. Overall I believe OpenAI operating (semi-independently) of MSFT is a better outcome than a completely Microsoft controlled AI division. While I believe in Satya and MSFT's vision - we need the best minds available working with unbiased intent (insofar as that's possible) to tackle the problems that AI will present as it develops. It's a wild world ahead.

I really liked Devin's final message at the end. "It is the most interesting time to be alive, maybe the last time, but certainly the most interesting time."
Compared to some of the more cynical takes that go around about the developments of the recent years, this one is one that I can resonate with well.

31:20 this event could be the birth of so much sci-fi technology we can't even imagine it! Also, as a computer engineering major I've been following AI and the hardware for years, and the rate of progress in the GPUs for training these models is astonishing. Nvidia's AI GPUs have improved performance *one-million-fold* in just the past 5 years, and it's looking like the rate of progress is still improving! This hardware breakthrough (H100 gpus released in 2022) is what allowed for the creation of Chat GPT 3, and the rest is history. Most computer hardware like traditional CPUs only improve 10-30% a year, but AI chips are improving millions of times faster. This is because the field is relatively new compared to decades of progress on traditional hardware, developing whole new chip architectures that were never useful before. Nvidia is ahead of the pack here, supplying 80-90% of AI hardware in the market today, but other companies have been pouring billions into this, seeing a gold mine in the future. These unprecedented levels of investment and innovation will allow for a metetoric rise in the performance of AI models, just think what GPT-8 will be able to do in 5 years with hardware a million times faster...
While I'm not a true expert yet, my opinion is that we are sitting on the edge of everything. I think this decade will be the most significant in all of human history.

31:20 The implication of AI are just fascinating. I am a 20 year old college student majoring in business. And the implications of even the most conservatives estimates of the affects of AGI in every industry are mind boggling. And none of my professors or classes even mention AI as a tool. It sure as hell is gonna be a weird future.

I DARE SOME OF YOU TO THINK DIFFERENT… I don't know if you realize, but AGI has pretty much been here, pretty damn close anyway. Think beyond the headlines: The departures from OpenAI look more like the disassociation from an inevitable yet necessary outcome perhaps
This might be strategic. To protect the brand and safeguard Sam Altman's name. Ilya's prior warnings about AGI being a threat were not made in vain. I know the threat of AI now is a real one. For example the hospitals around here have all been breached, in Canada that is. This lead to the hospitals using pen and paper again. Why? I don’t know but perhaps when a world is transitioning and we consider what’s at stake something has to give. We have to consider where we are going in this change and more than anything what is needed for that change to occur? What we fear is force while at the same time the magic happens and we are willing participants in one event as we insist we are avoiding another.
The last 5 years we have seen pandemic, a massive surge in AI, a global economic shift, digital assets and money all laying there screaming your name as you call it a scam (crypto) all in the same decade?
I think we all agree the future of the world is AGI, digital transactions, secure digital identities, tokenization, participation, and consensus mechanisms that have governed heat checks where humans decide how AGI processes data and progresses with that data in a vast amount of fields and industries. None of us thought that blockchain was just some dumb useless tech sitting on the sidelines I hope. Was this future, a future on chain, a future where AI is tokenized and a tokenized technology merge going hand in hand, a future where your authenticity is threatened and a governed validated digital identity of you is not only necessary but was this not always inevitable?
The very idea that OpenAI was a nonprofit company that had the majority of people charitable and comfortable with accessing and using it was probably one of the more clever ways to pool data i have ever seen, if you ask me.
The moral to this all is the only way a new tech that gets your biometrics and authentication of your humanity, is a necessary 'catastrophe'. A catastrophe that Ilya warned us about. The cat is about the bag and he can say “I told you so” at this point nobody will blame Sam and Microsoft.
A world of connection and automation that needs your biometrics won’t be a world people will willingly give into. Yet they will if it is by choice. You’ll give it up if you lose everything. You’ll give it up if you turn your phone on and have access to nothing. You’ll give it up to operate in this new world.
Perhaps this is why Sam Altman and Microsoft are no longer associating with OpenAI. The tech is out, it’s here, and the only person that can afford the association with it is the person that warned you of it, Ilya.
So in other words, consider alternative approaches to this topic and be prepared because when the Europeans decided to raid the Americas, that technology that changed the changed the world overnight. This AI is that gunpowder and be prepared because perhaps we haven’t seen anything yet. What's about to happen is going to happen overnight.
Sorry for sounding so conspiracy-like, but the the truth of the world is much stranger than fiction.
Not to mention these kinds of events are usually media appropriated and done with purpose.
TLDR version. We are fucked soon and will be thriving later.
    Enjoy!

31:00 gang rise up! But genuinely I learned about this earlier today and was blown away. Not only that but seeing Emmet Sheer after getting brought on as Interim CEO, THEN proceeding to threaten resignation if the boards doesn't make a more thorough statement of why they fired Sam was the cherry on top. It's a very complicated issue, and I think it's one of those cases when everyone is trying to do their best, but they failed to find the right answer.
First thing, I think an AI arms race between for profit mega-corporations is the last thing we want to happen. But the genie is out of the bottle - if not OpenAI, some chinese government backed megacorp could be the one leading AI charge. Do we really want this?
In an ideal world, we really need to put brakes on AI, but given our reality, maybe Altman is the guy to do lead AI. At least he seems like a decent guy and his people like him.

    • @goldenfishes3695
      @goldenfishes3695 Год назад

Yes, I'd like to have china or UAE lead the race. Simply because they are weapons of government rather than free-reigned super intelligence.
The corporations of USA seems to be unhinged and give 0 fs about the danger of AI and I'm not sure if anyone is paying attention but these companies have 0 ways to restrain AI models except a big switch to switch off the electricity.
If these projects were placed in the hands of Chinese and Arabs, they will at least ensure that no matter how powerful an ai becomes they will have multiple ways to kill it. We can see it from china's determination to destroy large corporations that are out of their control. Is it scary that a govtn has so much power? Yes absolutely. Is it worse than an entity that can think , anticipate and excel in cognitive task of every form. An entity that is so much superior to mankind that they are basically Gods. Does it make sense to give Gods control over us? No god in any religion or mythology has ever treated man as equals. You either toe the line or you're fked. You could be the most philanthropic man on earth but you will be condemned to hell for simply not believing in god. Look at humans as the most cognitive abled animal on this planet. Did we stop eating meat? Did we stop domesticating other species? We never and in fact we device new methods to eat more and domesticate more. And we even call ourselves great dog's mum or dad. If one day dogs could think like humans they would see humans as gods and also horrible demons.
AGI to us will definitely be a horrific god&demon.

If humanity will end, because of AGI. It's fitting that our downfall is due to greed. You're right, that we certainly are living in an interesting time.
This whole possible threat of emerging AGI reminds me of how it felt to be really concerned about climate change back in the 90s. Most people back then were vaguely aware of the threat of climate change, but it wasn't really an issue discussed in politics or media, or among ordinary people. I hope that it doesn't take the general public 10-20 years to wake up to the possible threat of AGI, because it'll probably be too late to do anything about it at that point.

I was really impressed with Sam Altman. I got the impression that he has watched hundreds of cofounder implosions from YC and knew precisely what to say to get everyone on his side. It's so easy to be angry in his situation, and if he was angry, he didn't publicly direct it towards his staff. But yes, Satya Nadella's move was also incredible. It allowed the team to continue working together starting the same models and same talent. It's worth $13 billion to poach the staff of openai. 31:20

It seems that the whole Decelerationist faction is done for.
Not only are they a faction that cannot fit in their field and their mission is to stand in the way of the passion of others, but now it seems their leadership is actual trash.
Until open hot warfare between corpos become common place, the Decelerationists cannot win, because profits is a race, and so is the development of AI.
And now that Windows just got all the talent from OpenAI, and they are accelerationists, AI will progress as fast as we can push it, all in the name of greed.
If you are for or against AI, it does not matter, AI will progress at full speed with Windows at its helm.
Now am all for AI, but I am also sitting here cheering for Putin to drop the Nukes, and is ready to become a terrorist in order to oppose the corpo overlords.
I think we are in good time for a good apocalypse, i was hoping for an atomic one in WW3, but Skynet is also something i can get behind.
But in the end, AI is just a tool, how you use it is what matters, just as Uranium can be used to give a city endless power, it can also be used to turn that city to ash.

Also sidenote - I'd prolly put Satya way over Iger in goat executive conversation (very interesting topic that I have not thought much about gotta say), simply because of how much trouble Disney is rn and it simply cannot be all Chapek's doing, some of those ideas that are failing now (remakes, D+) had been announced or done while Eiger was in charge.

Hey Devin. I feel it's important to point out that news came out recently that Sam was not fired over a safety issue. Also, many people from the Decel side have also signed onto the open letter calling out the board it seems. A lot of people are also blaming Ilya, but Ilya has also walked back his statements. This all together kind of squashes the decel vs accel theory. New leading theory is that one of the board members(the leader of Quora) had a conflict of interest.
Edit: Ah, I see you mentioned Ilya signing onto the leter.

I swear the things people write about AI “destroying humanity” reads like a James Cameron script. The more people talk about how AI is gonna take over, the more I grow skeptical. Half of the AI dooming online just sounds like people getting worked up from all the sci Fi films and novels they’ve watched or read. I can understand the concern as in AI taking jobs, being used to scam and make misinformation though.
