Vietnam is a fascinating country with a quite interesting history, which has intrigued many people around the world. In fact, Vietnam has a long-standing history of resisting the world's great powers that had come to Vietnam uninvitedly, and all of them one by one were sadly kicked out with a humiliating defeat. The most well-known one is probably the Mongol invasion of Vietnam. According to historians, known as the most violent barbarians in human history, the Mongols had been fully responsible for displacing the world populations and changing the face of human history through their widespread bloody massacres. Scholars regard the Mongol conquest as one of the deadliest invasions in human history. In fact, it took Iran almost a century to recover its original peak population prior to the Mongols' invasion. Every inch on earth the Mongols passed, was greased with human fat and soaked with human blood. Even the deadliest winters in Russia could not deter the Mongols from invading Moscow and Kiev. After their successful conquest of the Great Russia, the Mongols again repeated the great success in the Battle of Legnica in Poland known as the Battle of Liegnitz. The powerful Mongol army totally crushed the combined defending forces of European fighters, twice its size. The decisive victories in Poland and Hungary have become some of the most celebrated episodes in the Mongols world conquest, which showed the effectiveness of the Mongol war machine. Suffering the same fate as the European countries, countries in West Asia including Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey one by one submitted to the mighty Mongol army. Sadly, China was not an exception. The Chinese Empire said to the mighty Mongol Empire, "Our empire is as vast as the sea, yours is but a handful of sand." The Chinese had paid a deadly price for their arrogance they would never forget. The mighty Mongol army creatively went around the Great Wall of China, easily got inside and savagely massacred all the Chinese people, leaving a mountain of human skulls/bones outside the Great Wall that could be visible from miles away for years. According to historians, “Body [of the Chinese prisoners] stacked ‘like rotten logs’ littered the ground for more than 30 miles.” The mighty Mongol army led by Subedei (also known as Subutai-one of the greatest military commanders and strategists in history), continued to brutally burn, pillage, rape, and murder all the populations of 90 Chinese cities for over 6 months. As a result, unable to protect the Chinese people from the Mongols' attack, China's Great Wall has sadly become a historic symbol of China's eternal shame and failure. Finally, the mighty Mongol army conquered all of China in 1279 after Western Xia Dynasty, Dali Kingdom, Jin Dynasty and Song Dynasty all one by one shamefully surrendered to the Mongols. In less than 80 years, the Mongol Empire encompassed entire land from the Pacific Ocean to the Danube River. After having successfully conquered Eastern and Central Europe, Middle East, Central Asia, Great Russia, all of China in the 13th century, the powerful Mongol Empire immediately started their southward expansion where a small country known as Dai Viet (currently Vietnam) at the time was their first target. However, totally failing to achieve the great successes as seen earlier in the century, the unbeatable Mongol army met its match. In spite of having been fully equipped with thousands of well-armed warships, the mighty Mongol army of over 500,000 well-trained troops, led by the most brilliant and successful military commanders of all time with the greatest military strategy of Sun Tzu, was totally bitterly defeated, not once but three times (1258, 1285, and 1288) by the Vietnamese; and the decisive victory of the Vietnamese army led by Vietnamese Prince Tran Quoc Tuan against the invading powerful Mongol army in the bloody battle at the Bach Dang River in 1288 eventually brought an end to the Mongols invasion of Dai Viet as well as their dream of conquering the entire world. If the Mongol Empire had learned that the Chinese Empires before them had been bitterly kicked out of Vietnam after their 1,000-year occupation while completely failing to assimilate the Vietnamese, the mighty Mongol Empire would have never even thought of invading Vietnam.

A little extra info: The war with Cambodia after the war with America is actually Vietnamese Government trying to end the Khmer Rouge's holocaust in Cambodia. In 1975-1978, the Khmer Rouge troops actively assaulted Southern Vietnamese border and destroyed many settlements, claiming many Vietnamese lives. The Vietnamese Goverment tried their best to maintain peace, since they've just barely unified the country in 1975, after two consecutive wars no less (against the French Colonists and the Americans). However, after realizing there can be no peaceful negotiation with the Khmer Rouge regime, the Vietnamese Government decided that it's time to put a stop to it entirely. And they did. This war put Vietnam in a hard spot (international relationship-ly) and in someway, created an excuse for the China to initiate the Nothern Border War (yeah, again) from 1979. In conclusion, the Vietnamese whooped Khmer Rouge's ass while kicking the charging bull China in the nuts, simultaneously. Costs were high, and there're still many people critised Vietnam for starting a war with Cambodia, but we're proud that we did. If not, what will the political landscape of Southeast Asia be today with the Khmer Rouge still in charge of Cambodia? If anyone is going to bash Vietnam for this war, please be reminded that the Khmer Rouge leaders are still on trials in Cambodia for their crime against humanity. It was basically a holocaust with 2 million deaths (on a population of 7.1 millions, highest death/population ratio among any regime in the 20th century), and the Vietnamese stopped it, while other countries walked away.
That is another underrated war of Vietnam. Fighting against United Nation supported by both America and Chine ! And being criticized by the action that should have been considered the symbol of peace and friendship throughout the world.

I see a lot of comments from people from China saying that they don't understand why they are hated by Vietnam so much. But in fact, there are many reasons. Firstly, since you were young, you only learned history that China was invaded by other countries, but you didn't learn about your country's invasion of Vietnam. Second, there are many people saying that Vietnam copied China's flag, but you don't know that Vietnam's flag was born earlier than the Chinese flag. Third, there are some Chinese people who have redrawn the map of China. to take away the two archipelagos of Vietnam, Truong Sa and Hoang Sa, and say that the Vietnamese have invaded China's land. Fourth, it is true that China has helped Vietnam in fighting the US (and invading Vietnam more than a thousand years) but you say the Vietnamese are ungrateful because they don't speak Chinese and insult the uncultured Vietnamese (some even say Vietnam has been assimilated by China). Although I'm not Vietnamese, I really appreciate Vietnam because they never give in to the enemy (for 1000 years of the North, they still retain their own identity and stand up to regain their independence and freedom) Love from Russia

yeah the Tay Son dynasty leadered by Quang Trung (actually by the Nguyen bros but Quang Trung (Nguyen Hue) is DA KING. You must know this Vietnamese dynasty because if Quang Trung did not die soon then Vietnam would have been different. The Tay Son dynasty had a very strong naval force. He developed many ideas for Vietnam, such as invading Guangxi, Guangdong, modernizing the country in a Western style or even expanding its territory to the West by invading Laos ,Cambodia, Thailand. Vietnam would be so strong. He died when he was only 35 years old, no one was able to take over the throne, so Tay Son was swallowed by the Nguyen dynasty. Quang Trung is a person that we Vietnamese have a lot of respect for. Tay Son has only existed for 20 years, but it is a mark that we will never forget.

As a Vietnamese, I'm happy that people actually bother to learn more about our history than just about the Vietnam war. Though I think the part about the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia/Chinese Invasion of Vietnam(The Third Indochina war 1979 onward) was glossed over a bit too much. From 1975-1979, The Khmer Rouge commit mass genocide within Cambodia and then later commit cross-border raids into Vietnamese territory and murder more than 20000+ Vietnamese peoples, the Vietnamese government decided to take action into their own hands and launch an invasion of Cambodia. Since Cambodia is a Chinese ally, it prompts the Chinese government to declare war on Vietnam but was held off by the Vietnamese militia for long enough for the actual military to sent reinforcement from the troop's station in Cambodia. The US and Its allies also decided to support the Khmer Rouge and put on even more sanctions on Vietnam. Edit:My Comment Section Turn into the third indochina war.
Interesting fact: Since Vietnam, much like Chile, is very stretched out with a long coastline, with the narrowest part being only about 50 km wide, a strike from the sea at the central regions could easily cripple the supply and communication line between the North and the South, as seen with the French invasion in 1858 and the numerous civil wars throughout our history. Many old dynasties, particularly the Nguyen, knew of this weakness and had tried many times to expand westwards at the expense of Laos tribes, the annexed Champa Kingdom, and the Khmer Empire (you can clearly see this at 7:38 ). This continued until the France came along and redrew the map, giving large swathes of lands back to Cambodia and Laos. This expansionist tendency of our country in the past isn't taught in school nowadays for obvious reasons. And it's understandable how many Cambodians feel hatred towards us, just like we towards China.

This is every other Tuesday for us.” Of course, he was exaggerating, but it makes you think about the suffering and strength of the people. I love Vietnam so much.
I know several foreign friends who kept commenting that why Vietnamese textbooks were filled so much with wars, was that a proof of bitterness? Well, if their countries underwent 1000 years under control of other country, wars with strongest nations in the 20th century for the word “freedom”, they will know why the war stories must be mentioned again and again every year so future generations could feel grateful for what they have today. Many moms lost all her sons in the war. Many people left university to be a soldier at 20s. Many elderly suffered from permanent wounds. We are not bitter, we just remember the past to value the present ;)

If the Mongol Empire had learned that the Chinese Empires before them had been bitterly kicked out of Vietnam after their 1,000-year occupation while completely failing to assimilate the Vietnamese, the mighty Mongol Empire would have never even thought of invading Vietnam.
thank you SO much for this

Yeah we won the war but many people died
Although I'm not Vietnamese, I really appreciate Vietnam because they never give in to the enemy (for 1000 years of the North, they still retain their own identity and stand up to regain their independence and freedom)

And it's understandable how many Cambodians feel hatred towards us, just like we towards China.

aw thank you 4 appreciating my country :3

Nice! Where are you from?
Vietnam culture are Chinese culture. A successful version of Taiwan.
Shits funky bruh
Most Vietnamese didn't hate Chinese. They watch 神雕俠侶 (Thần điêu đại hiệp) together at home, do bussiness with Chinese.
They were angry because Chinese often say Vietnamese was origin and are sub culture of China, the truth is not.
Look at the Hmong/Miao, they are every where : China, VIetnam, Laos. They never call themselve Vietnamese or Chinese. They are just Hmong.
I've meet many Hmong and whenever I ask them did they are Chinese or Vietnamese they just said: Hmong.
As you can see, even Hmong people didn't have a country right now, they still not give up on their people, their culture, let alone Vietnamese.
Chinese people who don't know a single Vietnamese word, a piece of Vietnamese culture cause many angry here.
Wost of all Chinese tourist usually demand native people speak Mandarin, look down on them cause poor money.
I didn't have a single problem with Chinese, but many time their people is just too much. I could read and write Mandarin/Cantonese.
Every single time go on Zhihu/Weibo/Bilibili, nothing good about Viet written here. If not Bashing Vietnamese, Chinese incel gone thristy over Viet girl.
Chinese human trafficking also are big problem. There are many Chinese come here do fake bussiness, kidnap children, young girl, there are case one Chinese woman kidnaped a newborn girl for her 5 year old son, she ensure that her son gonna have wife.
And the 9 dash line on the sea, everysingle country dislike China claim the sea.
This is because many of China's underclass can't find wives. Actually most people are not hungry for Vietnamese girls. I also appreciate the Vietnamese's unyielding qualities, but that doesn't stop China from getting the benefits it deserves. The US has almost the whole world in its backyard. China is not as powerful as the US, but at least it needs a South China Sea to not feel narrow. It is unfair to small countries, but the rules of the world are so cruel
Hey bruh, as a Chinese myself, I really don’t recommend to read the words those netizens wrote on zhihu/weibo/bilibili. We get a large population so there are a lot of uneducated ppl. Some net communities are just toxic. Chinese also say dirty words towards each other, not just towards Vietnam. Those kind of haters they hate everything. Please ignore the toxic netizen and don’t let them ruin your happiness. Communicate with people in real world, most ordinary Chinese are nice and friendly. Our governments keep a good relationship and hope we people also be nice to each other.
@@happybeans6947 hey I’m Vietnamese and I want to ask, what is the situation with the three child policy in China. The CCP couldn’t just push new child policy like this right ? So what is your view on this desperate attempt by the Chinese just to ( I think ) keep China growing no matter what even though it too late for them to begin with.
@@phuct4980 It is what it is. The third child policy is just if you want a third child, you can. Not forcing people to have kids or anything like that. So I don’t know why you think the Chinese government can’t just push it.

Of course, he was exaggerating, but it makes you think about the suffering and strength of the people.
Big respect from China to Vietnamese for that you guys keep standing tough at whatever comes at you. Our government did conduct a bunch of shitty stuff, and they are notoriously famous of covering stuff up. The Vietnam-Cambodia war, the massacre in Cambodia by the Chinese supported Khmer Rouge, and the resulted Chinese invasion (due to the alliance with Cambodia at the time mostly) was never taught in class, only the Vietnam War against US was taught since we were on the same side. I'm sorry that this is the case, what I can do is to let more people know the facts and be brave enough to face it and be sorry. Not like Japan who never apologized for invasions and massacres in China an Korea officially. It's too double standard if we want them to apologize but not do the same to other countries. At least on behalf of myself, I'm sorry that my country supported that regime. It's even more crazy to know that that regime also killed half of the Chinese, which is over 200,000, living in Cambodia.
At that time the US is also a factor and the economy. i am vietnamese for my own view the action of massacare was a mistake and maybe a illusion of some chinese leader with US presence.
