Drums: Gives the song a skeleton. Rhythm Guitar: Gives the song a body Solo guitar: Gives the song definition/details Bass Guitar: Gives the song a soul and adds depth
I would say bass has the role of Harmony and rhythm. Thing is,it doesn't really give soul, depth, yes, but I see it more as the brain in some sort,it being deeply connected with the skeleton,so the spine which enables us to move.
Drums: orchestrates the song structure and groove guitar: define the harmony and fit a groove into the drums, provide melody with solos Vocals: provide melody and context Bass: provide groove, harmony, melody, and enegy/vibe to the song Probably the most underrated yet most important aspect to song creation is the bass But basically every element is responsible for melody, harmony, and rhythm if they are good at it. Human ears just naturally dont focus on low end because people speak in mid range.
I would like to see the same done for more modern metal songs with louder mastering. The bass is usually less audible there than it is in 70s and 80s metal.
I notice that Drums and Bass work together. When you're bassist and drummer and in sync, it makes the song so much stronger. John Bonham and JP Jones were great together as were Dennis Dunaway and Neil Smith, Geddy and Neil, the list goes on.
Lol bass and guitar are two entirely different instruments. Bass isn't simply a guitar tuned two octaves lower than a guitar. Bass is bass. Guitar is guitar. The term "bass guitar" is non-sense.
some of the best bass in metal is the stuff that you don't notice when it's there, but you do notice when it's not. you take it for granted, but without it there's no power to it.

Not always true. In megadeth even when the guitar and bass are played at the same time, the bass is audible as hell. I’ve had my bass turned all the way down on a Megadeth song, and it could still be heard
This is the video that inspired me to play bass guitar, back in high school I didn't even realize it was a different instrument. I always played bass in rock band but I didn't actually realize that there is a difference between the base and the guitar. I just thought it was another guitar, like how rhythm and lead are two different types of guitar but still just guitar. I heard this and realized I was hearing something completely different than the guitar and was so confused I started doing research into what the base actually was and after finding videos of people playing it and actually hearing it by itself I immediately wanted to learn it, been playing bass for years now
Simmilar thing happened with me as well...i also never knew it was another instrument...but loved the parts...and thought "how the hell do they tune those guitars i cant get mine to sound as low" and then i realised some guitars i've seen have four fat strings and longer necks...i immediately realised this is what i wanted to play all along 😊 been almost 15 years...love the guitar but bass is my natural instrument...even my voice is "bass"
Daniel Weisglass thats because Steve Harris doesnt limit himself to doing the same thing the guitarrists do, and most times where the guitars are doing harmonies the bass is keeping the rythym
Geezer Butler, Steve Harris and Cliff Burton are/were the MVPs of their bands. Other members were flashier, but without them, you have nothing. You feel the music through their bass.
I don't know about flashier, at least with Geezer and Steve. They were always going crazy with fills and doing a lot of extra stuff that most metal bassists don't do. Their playing stands out above the guitars and drums a lot of the time.
@@JonnyCrackersi believe he meant "flashy" characters rather than playing style...on the contrary all of the bassists he named were rather in your face and flashy playing wise...sometimes mixing wasnt the best but their parts were killer
@@kormendymatyas8667 Yeah, RTL doesn't have the best mix, even the drums are flat, and the vocals too piercing. In fact, MoP has a better mixing, they learned, lol.
I used to be one those people who disregarded the bass, which drove my Uncle mad. Then, the more I listened, it’s the unsung hero of most tracks. Nothing beats a sick bass line.
I agree, but to be fair, a lot of the melodies and rhythms are driven strictly from flea, their guitarist doesn't play as big of a role in all their songs
+MetalLives5150 Their new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer doesn't. Frusciante was a huge driving force in RHCP and was a huge reason for their success in the 90's and 2000's until he left.
Frusciante's sound matches so well with Flea's Bass and add Will Ferell's Drums and Anthony's Vocal chops and weird lyrics. You got the Best Fucking Band in the WHOLE WORLD!
As a general rule: Drums provide the most basic foundation Bass builds on said foundation while giving it more depth Rhythm guitar provides structure and makes the song what it is Lead guitar shapes the music and provides detail (sometimes also doing the job of rhythm guitar) Vocals decorate and complete the song I think this applies to most if not all genres of rock. Some exceptions obviously apply but it’s pretty solid
It's a song on (arguably) the first metal album, Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath. The track before N.I.B. is called "Bassically" and is a bass solo by Geezer. When playing live and many re-releases of the song, Bassically has been put with N.I.B.

Rhythm Guitar: Gives the song a body
Solo guitar: Gives the song definition/details
Bass Guitar: Gives the song a soul and adds depth

Yeah, pretty much
I would say bass has the role of Harmony and rhythm.
Thing is,it doesn't really give soul, depth, yes, but I see it more as the brain in some sort,it being deeply connected with the skeleton,so the spine which enables us to move.

guitar: define the harmony and fit a groove into the drums, provide melody with solos
Vocals: provide melody and context
Bass: provide groove, harmony, melody, and enegy/vibe to the song
Probably the most underrated yet most important aspect to song creation is the bass
But basically every element is responsible for melody, harmony, and rhythm if they are good at it. Human ears just naturally dont focus on low end because people speak in mid range.

Exactly! That is why Pantera sounds so heavy, and And Justice For Jason sounds like crap!

You can’t hear the bassist

Not always true. In megadeth even when the guitar and bass are played at the same time, the bass is audible as hell. I’ve had my bass turned all the way down on a Megadeth song, and it could still be heard

This is the video that inspired me to play bass guitar, back in high school I didn't even realize it was a different instrument. I always played bass in rock band but I didn't actually realize that there is a difference between the base and the guitar. I just thought it was another guitar, like how rhythm and lead are two different types of guitar but still just guitar. I heard this and realized I was hearing something completely different than the guitar and was so confused I started doing research into what the base actually was and after finding videos of people playing it and actually hearing it by itself I immediately wanted to learn it, been playing bass for years now
Great story. Thanks for sharing

I don't know about flashier, at least with Geezer and Steve. They were always going crazy with fills and doing a lot of extra stuff that most metal bassists don't do. Their playing stands out above the guitars and drums a lot of the time.

RHCP would be fucked without Fleas's Bass!

As a general rule:
Drums provide the most basic foundation
Bass builds on said foundation while giving it more depth
Rhythm guitar provides structure and makes the song what it is
Lead guitar shapes the music and provides detail (sometimes also doing the job of rhythm guitar)
Vocals decorate and complete the song
I think this applies to most if not all genres of rock. Some exceptions obviously apply but it’s pretty solid
Backing vocals add power to the lead vocals
ACDC: sweats in bagpipes

It's a song on (arguably) the first metal album, Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath. The track before N.I.B. is called "Bassically" and is a bass solo by Geezer. When playing live and many re-releases of the song, Bassically has been put with N.I.B.
