- Surveillance video released Friday shows three teenage suspects carjack an undercover Dallas police officer and the shootout that happened thereafter.
The shooting happened about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday in the 2400 block of Northwest Highway near Interstate 35E. An officer with the North Crime Response Team, identified as Nathaniel Chapman, called 911 saying he had been shot and his covert vehicle had been stolen.
Police Chief Eddie Garcia told WFAA that a car was parked behind Chapman and a suspect with two guns got out and approached his vehicle. Chapman then got out of his car, and both he and the suspect shot at each other.
In the video, you see the three suspects - all of whom have since been arrested - pull up behind Chapman in a parking lot, and demand at gunpoint that he get out of his car.
The three suspects were identified as 19-year-old Redricous Lewis, 17-year-old Redtravion Polk and 18-year-old Xavier Cook. They were all arrested in Shreveport, La., later that night on Wednesday.

If I am not wrong, I remember reading that they teach police to never stay in the car when shooting, cause you really dont have any cover or movement (car make an awful cover against bullets). I think he manage it good, get out of the car, never draw the weapon only when he was about to shoot, when he exite the car, he can get a better view of the situation, how many target, etc... can judge him for missing the shot, but it could end worst than this.
I don't care how much "stress" he was under, missing from that range is ridiculous, AND... isn't he the trained professional who is supposed to protect us when we give up our firearms???

Note to self, after dark late at night always park parallel to the curb so I can either drive off forward or backwards or park in middle of a open parking lot. The way he parked he had no way to back out the car even if he backed in facing the other way. I was car jacked once over 30 years ago and I promised myself I will never let that happen again.

No, he played it smart and safe, letting them take the bait car and making some distance, when he was outnumbered, didnt know if any more than the first guy was armed... He pulled his piece too soon if you ask me, but then I mightve let them.get too far away to be concerned with me anymore.
He played victim, to get them after, unaware, and if they didnt respond properly to commands then he was at a reasonably safer distance than surrounded in the vehicle by the three. Under pressure it gets chaotic and hectic and I kept thinking, ahy back away to no cover, there was no cover, so distance is next best thing. Cop played it smart and safe, apparantly there was gps in the car and they were all found and arrested.
This is another reason why I like to park backed in so I can see what’s coming, and being able to just drive off.

because of how crime is defined in the letter of the law. you're only a criminal if a court finds you guilty. until then, you're just a suspect.

What a strange sting. Basically the officer in the Challenger was alone except for the person filming. Basically, no backups. I'm sure the Challenger had a tracker. The driving officer had an issue pulling his weapon and basically got off a couple defensive shots while looking for cover. Why start a gun battle being out in the open against three armed hijackers in two separate cars with no armed Police backups.
So security cameras identify as people now? I guess it was just a matter of time...

Statistically that is the average police shootout distance and results. Perpetrators also miss at this range regularly.
He was moving and being shot at, IDK if he got hit or not, but I'd much rather not get hit by a bullet then hit my target. People can still shoot back after being hit and he was totally outgunned.

Ive really noticed the (understandable) difference in law enforcement vs military training. Law enforcement seems to train to break contact, where as military (infantry at least) often trains to close with the threat and eliminate it. That last part is much easier said than done, obviously, because you are training to harness the fight or flight response.

Suspect can be a noun as in a person that commits a crime or it can be a verb where a person has an assumption. Google homonyms.
