- A man sprung into action after a Houston police officer was shot in the line of duty on Saturday.
John Lally is being heralded as a hero by Houston Police Chief Troy Finner.
Lally admitted that he had multiple previous run-ins with the law, but he wasn't going to let that stop him from helping.
"A truly reformed individual is a person that we can use. He stepped up," Finner said.
Houston police said that Officer J. Gibson was still in the hospital recovering 24 hours after the shooting.
Lally said he was on his way to work when the gunfire erupted on the Southwest Freeway.
"I was like man, let me record what's going on just in case my job doesn't believe me," he said.
The video he recorded revealed a harrowing situation.
"I saw that one cop get shot and I've been shot before in the same leg and it made me know what he was going through," Lally said. "I just seen somebody needed help and I ran over there."

That man has a deep love for others.
He risked his life for another man, a stranger.

Man turned his life around and saved another human being
God bless him and officer
And recorded it so that we can see😅
He can now officially go back to his old ways 🎉
It’s criminals who I’ve known to act the most daring and brave when a life is needed to be saved. The lack the panic button and enact the “idgaf I’m godly” ash of war
prolly his dashcam so it was already on @@johnfernandez2844
Religion in America is a big reason why there are multiple shootings on a daily basis. Keep your prayers.
When all barriers drop and only human compassion remains.
In times of emergency it is necessary Need to help each other
To anyone else was curious how this ended: The officer was hospitalized and had surgery on his leg. The suspect was shot multiple times during this shootout and died at the hospital.
Thanks for the update! 👍
Thanks bro!!
Blesses from Argentina.
Best of outcomes, thanks for the info.
Heck yeah
Houston has a lot of crime
This guy walked into a gunfight to save a human life. I dont see a convict or a cop. I see a human putting his life in danger to save another. He has my absolute respect!
THIS! Exactly what I saw, exactly how I viewed it. My comment was a little different, more in depth but this sums it up perfectly. Just all of the respect and love in the world to both! Thank God for this man helping
I still see a cop. That badge don't cover all transgressions.
In the beginning you can hear bullets whistling past him..and he never flinched
But that's what the story is about that's the whole point of it is that it was an ex-convict saving a cop that's what the story is
Yes, that is what I see
There has to be given credit for this convict for saving the officer...
We are proud of you man for your love and kindness, you are indeed an honorable man .
As the daughter of a retired police officer who was haunted my whole childhood that this would be my dad one day, I salute you for saving this officer. You are an honorable man. Thank you ❤
Exactly the same here
One hand washes the other and two the face. All created as human beings.... human first

To know that he’s been in low places but having the conviction to help the law, in active gunfire, no less, shows this man changed a ton. Respect to him.
He helped a fellow human being, it has nothing to do with it being a cop.
@@minealsomine9663 That's isn't even the point of what they said. They were pointing out that the guy recording is an ex-convict, yet he's changed his ways to the point that he is out there saving a life instead of hurting one. Just proof that not all convicts are inhumane monesters.
Or thats the man he was all alone just that he went through trouble
@@derrickeverfield9543, very well said. That sounds like a human being with understanding, answer. And the heart not to judge. Thank you man.
but really the agonized cop did not need to hear his life story at the end.
