Valheim building is best building. Love structural integrity needed. Ends up making your designs look better as they are grounded in reality. Bonus is that it feels much more rewarding when you build an epic build as you can't just float everything. You really need to think about the design.
Not only does laying the stone staggered look better, it also makes it a bit more sturdy in that if one of the bottom rocks break, everything above it won't just cascade and break as well, making a gap in the wall.
it also helps with the support somewhat, you'll find that building staggered will allow you to build walls a bit higher before needing to reinforce them with metal supports.
Yeah, this hands down is the superior way to go. I also tend to do my walls a bit thicker (2-3) layers, all interlocking. If anything this buys me time to respond to attacks and not worry that the enemy will just roll over me.
Looks rally nice for sure. If you are trying to build something more realistically defensible though I would create the lip with with the roof tiles (wood side out) and create gaps between them to make holes that archers could fire down through. With this design enemies could just hide all day long in the creases.
5:58 Fun fact, that particular design of battlement is crenellated! An embattlement is any defensive low wall, and the gaps are known as crenelles, and can be referred to collectively as crenellations.
5:20 You can create an overhang by placing a door on the edge and snapping a stone to it, that way you don't have to free place it and it alligns perfectly
OMG thank you for this content! LOVE the chill format, simple explanations and calm voice! (no screaming into the mic or blasting obnoxious music). You got a new subscriber!
Thanks! Glad to hear you find value in this format! Totally agree. Sometimes it’s nice to just focus on a small element/concept and solidify that skill/understanding 👌🏻
some great ideas, i have never actually put a wall around my junk because i always think they're so ugly... but this could change things. i think you're still my fave valheim builder, you're so good at what you do!
Haha totally get where your coming from 😂 thanks so much for the comment though! It’s been fun carving out my little builders corner in this game. Super grateful for all of you who support! 🙏🏻
Luckly i watched enough of your videos so i already know how to do this kind of stuff :D Always when im building something, before that, i watch your videos for inspiration :D
It's nice looking and all but when building defenses I much prefer function over form. The issue with this design is enemies can pile up under the lip of the wall with no easy way for you to eliminate them and they can essentially breach it with no resistance.
I'm really grateful for this. It is a kind of itemized look at a portion of builds that can be applied to many projects. Would love to see other functional structures in this series. Thank you!
The pattern you refer to is actually called a *bond* . Many different Bonds exist- the most simple and the one you show is called stretcher bond. And (in my opinion) the best bond is polygonal masonry, totally amazing.
love your content. a lot of the stone wall tricks ive been doing/using for ages and glad to see them 'endorsed' so to speak haha. the double lip idea is one i will have to try more in the future, as i don't shift place pieces nearly as much as i could.
I've watched quite a few of your videos for your amazing creativity. I know this is an older video, I was wondering have you made a video or could you make a video on how you would do the corners for this build where walls meet?
At pillar placement, you could make the pillars of 2x1 stones rotated per layer.. And in the layer that's parallel to the main wall leave out the backside stone. Use this space to alternate bricks in the main wall.
Another Hint when building up Stonbe Walls - as you clearly see he is at absolute Max regarding height in terms of stability, meaning the Stones get damaged way easier when not "green". Just build the Wall "thicker", make it 2 of thoose wide. Then, you can incorporate Iron Beams in the middle unseen or have it one layewr thick and have them visible or conceal them with Decor. Just use Iron Beams and the Iron Cage Tiles for floors and Cellars to support the Ceiling.
More importantly, you should overlap your stone joints, rather than stacking stone blocks directly on top of one another, because Valheim calculates the strength of the wall based on whether or not you overlapped the joints. A wall with overlapped joints will withstand more of a beating than if you simply stacked your blocks one upon another.
Thank you for the tutorial! I'm going to try this out on my next wall build. One question- how would you propose incorporating doors into a wall like this one? Thanks!
If you haven't used Unreal Engine 5, you REALLY need to. I think you would be amazing considering your attention to detail. I just watched a bunch of your videos and was seriously impressed. There is a bit of a learning curve but there are some pretty decent tutorials here on YT. And you really don't have to understand very much to place assets and build. You can just import a height map (pre-built landscape) and your off to the races. The efficiency of UE5 is amazing. If you built this wall, for example, you could select all the static meshes that make up the wall, consolidate them into one static mesh and duplicate it. You could make a wall a quarter mile long in seconds. Then break it back down into individual assets and customize it however you need. The best part? It's free! UE5 and thousands of assets, FREE! If you watch some vids on it don't let the blueprinting scare you off. For building like you're doing here you only need the very basics and its easy to follow a tutorial. You may not need them at all depending on the assets you download. And the lighting! Ohhhhh the lighting, its AMAZING now with the update. Okay, I'm sorry I talked your head off. It just got me excited watching your creativity!
It’s so interesting you bring this up! I’ve been super interested in UE5 as a creative tool. I’ve seen some people create INCREDIBLE renderings and I’d definitely like to try it out sometime but the learning curve is definitely intimidating. Perhaps someday I’ll try it out. Possibilities are endless with that engine
walls with a staggered pattern are a lot stronger, because if one brick is missing, the ones above don't fall as easily. so not only does it look more realistic, there's a better chance that the wall will survive and you can spend less time repairing it. makes it a bit harder for making towers though, but the result is much better.
Great format, mate. You kind of teach some design notions, names of the details and much more. I really like this. Feels like I learn much more than just seeing someone doing a construction and copying it. What would you recommend for someone trying to get this "design sense"? Did you learn by replicating something or by studying some specific content? How much practice is important to get this style sense and set of memory reference tools? I always see this great stuff and want to get better because this carries over to other construction games too, right? Thanks for any tip.
wow it looks really nice, just if its outside wall it would need to figure out how to prevent enemies get under you as you wont be able to shot them from above as its overhang, but still gr8 pattern and thanks for sharing
Thanks! For a corner I’d actually move away from the wall pattern and instead build a tower or something similar. If you really need to keep the wall you’d have to come up with a thicker pillar design that you could transition in-out of for different sections of wall that are connecting at different angles.
I tried doing a stagger with an octagon wall, but I couldn't figure out how to make it proper until I watched this, and now I can make it more than a flat wall 😂
I like this a lot more with the staggering, but just personally I wish the stone tiles weren't so massive. I wish there were options for smaller bricks (and more floor tile shapes). They're so chunky and it bothers me lol but you definitely found a nice way to make those big ol' unwieldy pieces look a bit more refined
This wall looks great, but totally improper for defensive fighting. Enemies will pile up at the foot of the wall, out of your reach (if you want to stand on the top). The only weapons you could use are bombs (ooze and later bile bombs), but those are quite costly. Actual medieval fortifications had slits in order to make downward shooting possible. Of course, if you build it for aesthetics, that's a completely different purpose and story.
I wonder if it's enough space to put wood beams or maybe a core wood log in the gap to snap both sides of stone to. And then remove the wood. My guess is that the wood beam would allow an arrow through but only at exactly the right angle. Core wood would allow a wider angle, but I'm not sure if you might fall through.
@@sneezyfido No idea! I have never played the game and it may take some time before I ever can. I am sure that if anyone can figure it out, a builder could.
I love the improvement wall, I always look for new ideas. But how and where would you make a corner for a beautiful wall like that, and make it look good?
Great stuff! But I do have a question; how did you manage to make that upper lip with no supports? Doesn't stone just immediately topple if there's nothing underneath it?
wish i thought about the displacement before placing the giga wall around my base, unfortunately most of these changes wouldve been way too materials heavy for me anyway ahaha
It's all very well to make a boring flat stone wall into a fancy castle wall. But get back to me after you spend 1 month gathering the resources to make that into a 100ft wall around your base. In most situations, the issue is 'time' cost of farming up all that stuff, and delaying doing the next boss or whatever, to make something fancy. Nobody can be bothered. lol However, it IS possible to make something fancy with very little extra time spent, and no extra resource.
Look, BROTHER, I don't have an ass-load of stone lying around to double-up on my shitty lil wall. Also, you can use the black marble column to find the halfway point of a stone piece and snap something to it.
"We don't have to go real crazy with the decoration"
*shows the most intricately decorated stone wall I've ever seen*

Indeed, the limitations require you to get creative :)

Great to hear EriKant! Glad you enjoy these! Totally agree, breaking things down into smaller bits can really help the learning process.

Yeah, doors are magical items in that they give you 1/2m snapping points.

you can Shift+Middle click to clone an object, then wouldn't have to open the menu each time

So called "murder holes" could give that even more of a realistic look and would get rid of the blind spot under the walkway.
1:34 is that devcommands or a mood to get your build menu like that?
Dude this is great. What would you do with this kind of look on a corner? Like a corner wrapping around the outer section of the wall?

That's a cool design for the outer side of a perimeter wall. Any interesting ideas to make the inner side look nice as well?

Good question. Are those the openings in towers/walls where defenders can drop projectiles/oils etc.? Would be an awesome addition.
@@smittysurvival That they are.

Would not take take it as outer defend wall but it ´s a nice decoration for houses in basement or inner wall design, well done :-)
Thanks for the video.
Thank you!!
I noticed you had choices in your build bar like spawners ext. does any know what mod that is?
This is the “Better Creative” Mod. Gives you access to all base game assets through your hammer.
Take a shot every time Smitty says the word "establish"
ayy what mod is that that adds spawners and vegetation to your building tab?
tip #1 also applies to LEGO... any reason you are using the 2x1 stones instead of the big stone slaps?
wish i thought about the displacement before placing the giga wall around my base, unfortunately most of these changes wouldve been way too materials heavy for me anyway ahaha
what about the other side, do you just repeat the same thing?
Anyone have tips for curved stone? It leaves gaps that don't seem to fill in very nicely + messes up any depth and details.
This is so helpfull. More pls
why you gotta roast me and my stone walls within the first 5 seconds man.. LMAO

Awesome! Tnx
What mod do You use to have this building windows?
I want to see how to apply this concept to a curved wall.
good job
new drinking game, take a drink every time he says "establish"
I dink ta challenge an will under you table the drunk.
(Drunken speech for: I accept this challenge but did not make it through) 😂
What about the other side though?
instead of custom placing a brick far over you can, why not custom place a brick before and snaping with it, then remove the first brick ?
Today's episode is brought to you by the word "Establish"
good and ezy 2 follow tips
Which mods are you using?
I don't see any mods in this video.
How to lift youself up for easier to build?
But if I'm building super high I have to build it boring since I need the spacing for iron beams to be perfect
how do you have infinite materials?

the middle banner being offset weirdly upset me
otherwise a nice video!
you are greate!
If a troll will attack me, what can I do ? He can't destroy my wall right ?
And the next video should be made about repairing all this after the wave of trolls 😀

There's nothing subtle about lapping joints on stone walls.
No matter how many videos I watch or builds I try, I just can't make anything that's not just trash
