Zuck to Congress: I welcome regulation -- if it's the right regulation - www.cnet.com/news/congress-to-grill-facebook-zuckerberg-over-data-mining-election-meddling-cambridge-analytica/
CNET This whole non sworn in pathetic milk toast hearing was a joke! There was not even an investigation into the violations that this man and his company have perpetrated against the American people. He is as are many of these senators "prolific liars"
CNET We need to recognize that part of what appears to have been going on, was Congress fishing for statements to use as leverage later on. A similar type of strong arming used in journalism. Congress designed parts of the meeting to be used as out of context ammunition for leveraging agendas they have in mind, by using footage of the meeting to state that Facebook and Zuckerberg backs them up. Regardless of how upset people are with Facebook, we need to recognize these pitfall traps before we have the government stepping too far into industries that they would only mess up with too heavy of a hand, we've seen what third lapdog the FCC did, what's next? We could see a clear misunderstanding or manipulation of Zuckerberg by the senator asking about privacy vs paid platform. Anyone of us who have used the premium side of a service like mobile games, Spotify, etc know what sucks was stating. NO ads for paid, targeted ads with info, irrelavent ads without info. And yet it was being twisted into "pay to protect your data". I don't know if this is because the senator was just too old to get it, or out of intentional manipulation. If the public isn't careful this debate will cause ratholes for uneeded heavy handedness to over regulate the internet (especially with net nuetrality gone). Cnet I'm not sure if you as a company are allowed to take a stance but I urge you to please take these things into consideration, especially if you have future content to be released on the topic. Even as a business you are an influencer. Thank you for taking the time to read this if you did
Adam Shephard that just puts a Hilarious comic in my head. XD one politian with a machine gun and the coil of bullets are loaded backwards, another holding the barrel of a revolver and pointing the handle of the gun at mark, yet another trying to afix a bayonet to a pistol, another trying to put the magazing of an AR into the side of the gun, one holding the gun in such a way that his thumb is on the trigger and the barrels facing him trying to look menacing, others holding m14's the wrong way, one clearly holding a water pistol, another holding a spudgun, another holding a jammed paintgun XD
Another reason why I believe term limits would be a good change, However, there were some representatives who had a clue and I wish they would put those together so we can get to some of the real issues. Regardless, political answers for political figures were funny and it was good to see them just as upset as I feel when I'm told what they want me to hear and cya. However, I really appreciated John Kennedy's comment about Facebooks EULA. I about spit my food out.
Gross. How logical fallacies become truth in a binary world. You always have to have a bag of imaginary numbers to correct it. And only if your IQ is high enough.
Those old people never grew up with social media though. And also, 'generations' were just made up so old people like you could talk trash about younger people. Generations don't exist. So don't bother using it in your arguments.
They clearly have no idea what they're talking about. How exactly would the proposed law be enforced (not to use the data of under 16s without parent's consent)? Also, with regards to the most un-inventive and useless generation in human history remark, have you heard of the dark ages?
Eric Cartman "Before I answer your questions, let me talk about where I come from. My parents weren't Very wealthy people, yet they where good hearted and told me the rights and wrongs of the world.. " haha
@@BiggaMyMan THEY don't know how it works. But Facebook, google, amazon and twitter (to a lesser degree) are tracking your every move anytime you use your phone web browser and apps. There are so many videos on it, but I didn't believe it. I then downloaded duckduckgo and other anti tracker apps along with wioth anti tracker browser extension. The argument and question at hand are why does Facebook need so much data and why is Facebook able to track people who don't have Facebook? if you haev iPhone or android download duckduckgo and you'll see how many times Facebook google and amazon is tracker your every move.
Wow its too bad we have people who dont understand what theyre talking about making decisions on the internet, its a good thing our generals are making high level military policy.
lol not surprising, can you give me a time stamp of when they talk about that? (the cookies part) I dont feel like watching the whole thing but I do want to see that part.
legendp2011 that's not the problem. Facebook is also collect data from your phone that you didn't put on FB, like who you've been calling with. Thats the problem
ilke Altundag no offence but what makes you so special that anyone from Facebook would care to look at your data? It’s used for ads by a program but they don’t care about you and everything you’re doing ?
ilke Altundag Google does exactly the same thing. Most social media sites do it now. It's common practice to set up programs that follow our internet trail, the places we go and things we do everyday to make everything easier for the user and to get us to buy more products from the sites and companies we frequent.
Ain’t it crazy a social media platform made in his dorm got to the point where national security became at “risk”. I cant imagine being this man and so young so much responsibility s/o to young innovators
If you don't agree with facebook, they give you the option to turn off recommendations. How are people so blind. You even said they didn't listen yet you are against Facebook? Lol you going on their site for free means they can have ads. Whether it's data collected specific ads or just random ads is up to you.
@@ericwheelhouse4371 even if you opt out of personalized ads, they still can and do access and collect your data. That option only controls if they use your information to actively market advertisements to you.

Damn. This was so painful to watch. It’s like the time my grandma asked how to send a fax on her iPhone and simply couldn’t understand why there’s no place for the paper to come out...and now they want to make a law about it 😐
The “automatic opt-in” shit they’re talking about is the stuff they’re targeted by. Old folks don’t know that stuff is going on, they just passively have their information taken because they were forced to click ‘agree’ when the software updated.
Yeah? What about the info that isn't about the uploaders. My info. I did not willingly grant Facebook permission to use it, I didn't sign over anything. I didn't have a say and I didn't give permission to the stupid uploaders to have their way with me. People these days are inconsiderate and think that I am a ridiculous person for getting huffy about my privacy. I have to say, "NO!" to every business and family member and friend and random person who says, "This goes on our/my facebook page". Then I have to explain it to them over and over again. They can't upload that info of me, because that is me, they don't own me. I have the right to object. Everyone thinks it is all about them, forgetting that there are other people around them.
Lizard iculous I completely get where you are coming from, but how did they get that info? You should not be giving info, taking pictures etc when you know damn well it will end up somewhere online one way or another
What about Metadata? You realize they don't just collect data you post, they collect data such as your location, where you're moving, your contacts and family members, which websites you're visiting, what messages you're sending via WhatsApp or messenger etc. If are logged on to FB (even if you don't have the tag or app open) or any software owned by FB (Such as Instagram, WhatsApp etc.) they are following all of your movements online and your physical movement in person.
Alex Volkov. It is pretty intense, and I believe there should be regulations about Data usage and privacy. My comment was mainly spawned from reading comments that seemed to act like Zucc has committed some horrendous cybercrime against humanity. In regards to the Data usage, even the metadata, it's like getting on a bus every day, and then complaining that you don't like the route taken. No one is forcing you to ride the bus, and the route is obvious to anyone who looks it up. It's not a huge secret that facebook records all sorts of data, every website and service does now. Facebook does have a bunch of issues though, such as its role in promoting biased media, and it shouldn't be allowed free reign over data.
well it seems that the gov is trying to control the internet and these thriving companies or at least limit it. The internet is gr8 how it is. We still have net neutrality (for now), but if the gov tries to take that away from us and start to add regulations to companies like Facebook that can ruin the business model then say bye bye to sites like Facebook, twitter, insta, youtube, etc... cause they use analytics for their ads and ads pay the companies bills to keep it running. Also I agree especially moms. Moms love facebook. I have an account that I haven't touched in 10 years lol. My mom made it back when I was like 8. But the point I was trying to make is that these guys are so old they probably don't understand the internet, the power of the internet, and the community of the internet.
FrenchieFries normally i would say i don’t like the government to control things, and i do not think the government should ever regulate the internet, but in this case they are doing a very good thing and protecting Americans from themselves. It’s amazing how people are such sheep when it comes to social media and don’t understand how detrimental it really can and is becoming. Maybe people like me who are old enough to remember what life was like before the internet can better understand this.
Nick Miller Nick Miller I remember how life was before internet. First decade of my life was internet free but the internet has opened so many opportunities. The internet has allowed so many people to create an online based business. The internet allows everyone to share info. You can learn about anything because it’s readily available on the internet. The internet being detrimental is an overstatement. Sure we all notice how mobile phones and social media has affected social life’s and how we interact but you really think the gov would do anything about that? No they wouldn’t. If they want to do anything it would probably be another tax or regulation to be placed for these large companies like Facebook. I’m sorry but people being sheep with social media is also not totally accurate. Sure you can say that if most people use Facebook rather than twitter for dms then yeah people can be like sheep and just go straight to Facebook but at the base of it all it comes down to convenience and entertainment that satisfies the user. I.e back in the day you had to let your friends know where and when to meetup. Now you can send a quick text at any moment to update someone. (People generally take this over board and don’t talk to each other as much but that’s just based on personal limitations)
The whole court system seems very unjust. I have full respect when I’m saying that, but I would never want to be interrogated by those men who have a one-sided mindset out there to prove you wrong in front of millions of people. I couldn’t do any better than Zuckerberg did. And I agree with his statements also. I feel that this system is flawed and shouldn’t be a determining factor of anything.
Honestly his answers are pretty fair and straightforward. He acknowledges that Facebook is responsible for the mistakes they made, while qualifying that in a way that doesn't throw his company under the bus.
Jordan Sullivan I agree, he actually did address the points in all the questions. There were certainly times when he avoided saying yes or no, or side stepped questions like when that senator asked if he though the EU had it right, and he responded "I think they do get things right". Awkwardly, yeah, but he did end up evading that question. So not quite 100% direct but also not quite a politician. Though also worth remembering that this is the abridged version
zadose Yes and no, he was evasive at times but there were plenty of other times when I thought he was going to talk around an answer but then he ended up circling back to the question anyway. Still wouldn't call him a stand-up citizen but as far as answering questions he did alright.
Agreed. Mark was honest. Congress is ignorant and evidently believes he is the all-seeing all-knowing social media God. Mistakes are made by everyone. Mark should've asked *them* what they're doing to protect children from sex trafficking. Dumb asses worried about businesses targeting children with ads. Priorities.
I think that’s actually what he wants you to believe, the reality is he didn’t answer any questions at all, he always resources to the “we made a bunch of mistakes, we’re sorry” and then twists back to his speech
The Beast Of RUclips, Smdh. He got 166 brain-washed zombies agreeing with that comment. F****** idiots can't even see Fuckerberg's no better than them but gets to live the high life off their blood, breath and sweat. Let's see how rich he'd be if he was the only human on Earth.
These old people clearly don't understand technology and Internet business models. Their questions oversimplify the problems and seem only targeted at fighting Facebook and the Internet in general. I mean, these guys were probably already 50 when Internet was truly bloomed (2000), how can we expect them to learn at that age something so completely different than what they are used to?! They do not seem competent enough to deal with these complex issues.
And too old to understand that just by the fact you be in social network you cant be protect for keep all your information because if this happened it would not be a social being
You're a facebook bot aren't you? Just because they are putting pressure on your lord and savior Fuckerburg you think they don't understand technology? I'm 29 (and not ageist) and believe these senators asked reasonable questions.. especially the last one about protecting children's privacy that Fuckerburg blatantly dodged.
mossy1 yeah, that last question was on point. But then you got questions like "if I'm *emailing on WhatsApp* ..." The wrong use of terms speaks alone by itself but so what, right? The thing is: *we already know that conversations on WhatsApp are encrypted from END TO END* . I'm pretty sure these respectable people do not know what end-to-end encryption means. I'm not saying they're useless. I'm saying they should have been mentored by experts on the topic. It's clear to me that they're are experts on anything else they do, but not in this topic, and a little mentoring would have helped put Mark on the spot instead of just giving him the safe exist of "you already have that option"
so you think they don't make senseable questions, when the big ones were. do you think peoples privacy should be bought. or that a law should be put into place to protect minors digital information. i am pretty sure those are very reasonable questions.
If you are concerned about your privacy, then use other social networks. Facebook tells they are using your information. If you don't like it, just leave.
Otra persona más To be fair every social network does. They need a business model, how else are they supposed to offer a free service? It’s preposterous to me that the people were so shocked when they discovered it, I honestly thought that everyone knew what they were getting into when signing terms of service... This Congress sessions paints a terrifying picture of the USA citizens and congress honestly.
Ambrose because they don’t understand that there is immense costs to running facebook. It’s a simple concept in marketing: if you’re not paying for the product, you are the product
I kinda feel bad for Mark. He has to answer questions like that politely and politically when he probably wants to tear out his hair with how pointless a lot of those questions seemed.
I disagree, they are baiting him into statements, for example he said that we are the owners of our data, that's something that can be used against him in a number of ways and limits his options, i found that to be true with most of the questions. They want stronger restrictions, policies and laws, the only way to get that is to force him, that's what this whole thing is about else they'd still just be talking in his office I think some of you are just missing the point of all this and are taking the questions way too literally.
Gerberger I know how advertisements work. They appear as they are based on what you do, like, spend time on, could be interested in, and so on. It's intended to give the user a more streamlined, personal, and beneficial experience. Various websites track how you use the site and adjusts itself accordingly to suit your demands and desires so long as the core functionality is not changed. Certain RUclips videos appear depending on what you have watched and liked in the past. The same goes for advertisements. You are giving advertisers and the site data no matter what you do without actively blocking out the tracking requests by getting NoScript and a typical adblocker. It is not false information; it is how sites and advertisements work. The burden of proof is on your side, now.
If any service you use is free then you are the product. Don’t get surprised if you feel used in that relationship. Just make sure what you give up is worth the service you’re getting.
lifeworkerJudgement intruth it's not facebook looking at what you search. When you search or browse the internet, it creates cookies and I think the ads that you see is based on the cookies stored in your browser.
Guys McFellas He could give them a straight answer, but he didn't want to as this would definitely be used against him later on. By remaining vague he kinda answers the question but the senate doesn't get anything concrete to use against him.
Marijn Vermeulen so in order words, he has bullshit answers that don't solve anything. If he had actual solutions, he wouldn't have to worry about it being "used against him".
Guys McFellas The senate is just questioning him in the hopes he'll mis-speak at some point so they can use it against him. Of course Zuckerberg knew of all the bad things happening all along and is just covering his ass right now.
The last bit summed up: Sen: Do you agree with me? Zucc: Not completely Sen: Yes or No? Zucc: It's not as easy as that Sen: I disagree, you're wrong, I'm right, I'll keep arguing my point without hearing your reasons.
@@cf2851 that's it, the senator asked if there should be a straightforward LAW regulation for processing children data, that was the question. Zuckerberg answered "for the good of the people, there should, but it would shrink the range of my company's power so nope, just nope. Biiig nope".
We don't need a law. It's as simple as that. Kids should be smart enough to decide what information they give to Facebook. The education system should explain the concept of privacy and also about cookies.
Unbelievable, so much lying especially that they don't work with the government, that if you close the account they delete all the data that they collected of you and that they don't listen to your conversation or texting on whatsapp ( yes it's encrypted but they got the code and if you talk about let say sunglasses, the next day you get sunglasses advertisements on Facebook ), And the Senators went way to easy on him, you can tell the his lobbyists where hard at work plus the Senators probably feared him because they all use Facebook and need it for getting elected again. A thousand of us closed our accounts and suedFacebook for 50 million dollars. The truth is that I had an account but never used it but I've been using WhatsApp a lot together with a personal VPN, never trusted him or his Facebook after learning how he stole Facebook which was not belong to him at the first place. Plus I'm not a fool letting everyone know everything about me.
It baffles me how incompetent these senators seem in having discussions, which is supposed to be almost the entire point of their job, aside from being informed about their topics, which they were also lacking in this case. How are they expecting to get anything out of this hearing if they interrupt him on every possible occasion and don't even try to follow what he has to say about their poorly thought out questions?Obviously he can't go into detail because of NDAs or something and he doesn't want to make any problematic statement in front of the media to avoid shitstorm and taking his statements out of context. None of these questions can be answered with a simple yes or no.
A large practice in winning an argument (espicially in higher industries such as news reporting and politics) is to fluster your opponent, either by scaring them into a straightforward answer that they didn't want to give or not giving them a chance to give the answer they wanted to give, forcing a shortened version with potentially incorrent interpretations.
Sure, but that's not a practice a federal institution like a the senate should strive for, don't you think? An incorrect interpretation wouldn't help their cause, so why would they do that?
But it *would* help their cause, at the end of the day the government likely has its own motives over the public. And in order to sway opinions towards these motives it needs to do some trickery and make laws that it thinks are right rather than the general public. Take for example how hard that last guy was trying to force Zuckerberg to promote a potential new law in the works. For if they can obtain Zuckerberg's 'approval', then it would be much easier to get the public on board with it too. The incorrect interpretation would allow the government and in extent the media to twist his words and sway the publics opinion. "Zuckerberg says yes to U16 privacy regulation" would likely make everyone think he was on board with everything the government is going for with this law rather than the actual response Zuckerberg gave. Alas, I digress. The main point is that governments are not beneath using underhanded tactics to promote what they think is right, or will get them more money (as corrupt as that may be), but that is a topic for another day.
These senators are exactly what the problem with the world is today! Stupid people pretending to know shit beyond them and exhibiting confidence! This is a time where self confidence is a bigger asset than deep knowledge itself!
Kolos Kovacs Serious government video? Are you really this gullible? This whole hearing was bullshit political grandstanding. Nobody is forced to have a Facebook account.
kay jay nobody is forced to have a facebook account, no... But those who have an account had a right to privacy, along with other issues. This is a serious government issue because it puts a large amount of the US population's personal information at risk.
I mean, FaceBook users agreed to the Terms of Service. So they should know that because they agree to it, they are basically ready for the risks that come with it
@John Smith ????? It's the parents fault ...….… ??? Why do they let their kids use Facebook anyways isn't it a risk that you know gonna happen a lot of time when u decide to have a kid
@John Smith ????? It's the parents fault ...….… ??? Why do they let their kids use Facebook anyways isn't it a risk that you know gonna happen a lot of time when u decide to have a kid
Next get the Director of the CIA and FBI to answer what they do with all the data they are collecting and how much they collect. And why they are collecting all pictures of every person alive ?
This is like watching a kid try and explain how the internet works to his grandfather. Targeted ads aren't bad, putting adds onto a free service is also not bad. Why is it Facebook's job to monitor what YOUR kids are doing online? Isn't that called parenting?
So lets say you created a site that eventually became the origin of many kidnappings and pedo practices, would you still run it? Cause if you do I understand why you asking.
Ole Hofsøy You obviously don't understand that Cuckerberg has been shutting down people of diffetent political opinions and shit himself when called on it
Lennard these men and women or other possibly, do not understand how facebook works for instance every one of these people in these seats do not realize that every single man women and child has a internet footprint that anyone including the FBI, parents, and employers can see and use as reasoning on being investigated, grounded, and not hired or fired, I do my best to keep my footprint or portfolio as clean and show me as a person of great responsibility and character so if a employer sees this he won't be turned off. On the internet you are not private, so don't post, click, or stream without realizing the consequences.
Il Tenore Yes many people need to learn myself included and that is the problem, not privacy and data breaches but misinterpreted protocols to get next to complete internet safety. The problem is ignorance (which is not bad everyone is ignorant on millions of topics.) ,the problem is a person to person basis. Many people need to take the time to learn basic fundamentals, others need better interpretation of methods which is Facebook's mistake, but in mass its a 50/50 issue that can only be fixed with 100% effort from both parties. The theory that I say is fundamental (which I assume you have heard a few times) that nothing is private, so we either learn to be mindful, or stop social media entirely. They brought up that professor guy who got information off of many people, I could go to Facebook look at your profile and learn a lot about you.
I love how, the democrat, "I would have to pay you, in order to not send me, using my personal information, something that I don't want". Senator, a few years back, didn't you vote to make us pay for something some of us didn't want, and if we didn't buy it we paid for it anyway?
jennifer g. lapan - You are kidding, right? If I run a multi-million or billion dollar company, I can contribute, pay-off, buy out a senator to promote a law that can benefit me. Why do you think there is no universal health care? Or why are we going to war? There are big corporations behind government decisions. FaceBook obviously has a big impact over consumer decisions.
Burak Unutmaz it's called respect which they couldn't do but Mark was doing ! It means people don't want to listen carefully but want to put their opinion only but Mark was listening fully after that he was replying so he can give a best answer of their some stupid questions
Zuckerberg's most answers include: a. No, I am not familiar with that. b. I will have my team follow up with you. Senators don't seem to have ideas on how facebook works. Zuckerberg lies on how it works and they rest their questions.
xlioilx no the government is a fascist for trying to regulate someone’s company... if users aren’t comfortable they can always stop using Facebook... Facebook makes money from ads so it can remain free, that’s exactly how google and RUclips work as well as every company that provides ads... even television and radio... and they all gather some form of information to show you the most relevant ads... the government is just clueless and want to butt their head into everything and make new laws on everything... it’s sickening
Francisco valdez But Zuckerberg clearly couldn’t answer half the questions, I get the government shouldn’t be “butting their heads in” but how come it’s so hard for him to actually answer?
Sinify the reason he wasn’t answering was for legal purposes... they were asking questions in a way that if he answers he would admitting to their accusations... he needed to be careful to word his answers in a way that could not be interpreted in the wrong way
Uhh... He answered the questions. If that wasn't clear, you may not understand his answers. The questions were uninformed, stupid, or both. These were ignorant Senators looking to make political gains rather than have an educated and informed investigation about how to better guard user information shared with social media platforms. Whenever Zuckerberg tried to direct the investigation in that direction, he was interrupted.
poor guy these old people dont understand how the internet works and theyre bombarding him. A lot of that shiz they asked doesnt just apply to facebook, it applies to basically all social media
t1m3l0rd I'll tell you a goid essential way I use it. For news, and also know what's going on near by. Example, I live in Puerto Rico so ever since Maria we've been having power surge problem, I can know what's going on trhough what people post about the problem or what's going on outside of my country. It all depends on what you want to use. Waste time and see stupid meaningless post or follow good pages thaf gives actual news and follow friends that lives in the same country to know what's up around you.
David Trvjiyo every social media company is doing that, youtube ,google, amazon, insta, whatsapp, snachat!!! What will you stop using??? Anything free is being paid for by advertising.
The only thing that made facebook prosper compared to other platforms at that time like myspace was that on facebook you couldn't see who visited your page.
Ok so regarding the last question. The internet including Facebook has no way of proving someone’s legitimate age, so making a law to protect minors is virtually useless. Perhaps the parents should be stepping in and regulating that instead of having Facebook take all the blame for everything. Facebook can only do so much
Stephanie Arnold, it’s just what I was thinking, minors can lie about their age and join fb which is for over 18’s, parents should be checking what their children are up to! Also ads are everywhere, on the tele, RUclips. You tube is far worse with channels encouraging anorexia, bulimia and suicide! Those you tube channels need to be shut down. Those are the real issues with young influential minds using the internet!
He sounds like a guy with a severe case of halitosis. Actually, a dude I know met him once years ago in a conference, and told that his breath absolutely fumes.
Elmntsktr he can do whatever he want with whatever he has from users in facebook because he didn't ask for them to come to facebook. Users should know the consequences of having their information in anything from the internet. Is it the right(morally) thing to do for Mark on using information of its users? No. But did he force anyone to give their information? No. demonpride1975 yeah, "work along side" but the questions aren't "working along side with facebook" it oozes with "give us control over facebook privacy and shit, same as give the government authority over the internet. Bottomline, these people in the position need an upgrade, questions from people who only know how to create an email. Why only now? They should've known better since they're in the position to prevent this before it'll happen, they have every bit of resource to create a law before this happened. Might as well sue the one who created internet because lurkers and pedos are using internet to retrieve and accumulate data of their victims.
You willingly gave them all the information they have. Didn't you read the terms of service? If you post a photo on FB, they have rights to it. Sure they might seem like nice people but money is their god and they'll do anything to get it. Sell you out to marketing groups? Government? No problem.
No, Senator. We don't need a law. We need stricter parenting. Monitor what your children are doing and putting out there. Understand what this technology means to them, rather than just rely on vaguely worded terms of services that none of you can be bothered to read. This was painful to watch, like trying to explain IKEA furniture directions to an antique table.
@@mastertoad2 By having more taught better equipped parents. I see there are some idiots here who feel that this bill is right. Ive always been taught by my parents too never leave my personal info out on the internet and I never have. I have buddies who are data protectors for huge companies. He tried finding my name he could not find it to say the least. This is the same thing as saying a child took the car keys and drove off in it and they blame the manufacturer not the child and parents.
Did well at what? Deflecting questions and blame onto the company when he was the one who intentionally let 3rd parties buy private information without the users knowing while also censoring and outright banning people who they disagree with while letting groups like Isis have a Facebook page.. yeahhh if you support this asshole in any way even passively you are either ignorant of his wrong doings or you are just another sheep who had no idea wtf is going on.
it's very interesting to see the negotiation between business and government so open and transparent. Of course, senators are quite old and not so aware of modern business strategies but the negotiation itself is precious . But it's wonderful to watch such a thing from the perspective of non-democratic country's citizen.
Facebook is a service. If you have issues with the service then you do not have to use it. Running a network like Facebook requires money, ads provide that money. When you sign up you agree to their terms and conditions and if you don’t know what you’re signing up for that’s your fault
for millennials, maybe. But the reason most of us join facebook, its because friendster is down and myspace is so oldschool already. We're left with facebook.
Social media is everywhere. Kids can get into it with a damn phone. Don't pull this "you should be parenting" horse shit. I've got a 2 year old, and a 4 year old, and it's impossible to keep an eye on them 24/7 as it is. I couldn't imagine trying to control everything they do when they're older. @Guy McFellasthis generation parent love to give excuse and forgot how our parent back then managed their children!! everyone want to do the easy way... and less want the hard way!! maybe have choice have bloody spoilt us
They are not that disconnected. They are merely asking questions that the people who voted them in and the people who gave them money wants answered. Very few, if ever, questions from Senators and Congressmen in a hearing like this are their own. Think of politicians as a talking puppet.
Senator: Can you please incriminate yourself. Zuckerberg: No. Senator: I yield my time. Why do we think congress is smart enough to ask questions about such a complex business.
He probably played them both. They were happy buying information he was giving them from other countries but once he sold and got "expose" of doing it to this country they had to put up a show.
Facebook runs a pretty standard business model. If you want a free service you view ads, those ads are tailored based on your information and demographic. If you don;t want ads then you pay. TV, radio, satellite radio and many apps and websites do the same thing. The issue is ignorant customers. No one is forced to use these services.
Yeah, but I think this entire issue is about protecting the 'ignorant masses' as if people themselves cannot be held responsible for naively sharing information without thinking what may happen to it. Up to that degree Mark is right... people voluntarily share that information. Now its a bit dubious maybe if you say customer data is private and well protected, but somehow end up in the hands of third parties anyways. But ignorant consumers are definitely to blame as well.
Facebook is like a public garden, it needs to be public and financed by taxes. I don't want ads to annoy me and people spying on me when I go for a walk in a public garden and meet people.
@@Vitrunis You're missing the point, that it's a private organization and that technically they own everything, as the info is being handed to them and if someone doesn't want to pay for a service, they can deal with ads, the government should not be burdened with yet another of the public's blind ignorant mistakes of putting all of their information in a public domain.
@@RS-cs9wf >it's a private organization and that technically they own everything< that is where the problem is. Technically the best solution would be to ensure that users have direct control on the platform. Direct control, and not "accept everything or just quit while there is no as interresting alternative on the market"
@@Vitrunis I do agree with you but just because it's not the nicest option the company shouldn't have to deal with the issues that come along with more regulation, in the end people shouldn't accept a mediocre Facebook, they should push to be better, but taxes shouldn't fund a FREE media platform, and it's not required that someone be on it. But if you are on it then you should accept that you either pay for it, or watch adds, the only FREE thing in America is ripping off the government by making them pay for everything with money they already don't have.
This man did not begin with benevolent intentions. And especially after it gained traction he did not actively seek out how to just “connect” people than capitalize on a marketing gold mine.

why does facebook have to regulate your children what happened to parenting? Yes, I think they can do something to make is a safer place for children, but I grew up with AIM,AOL, chatrooms, msn, and I turned out fine because my parents were there for me and told me what was right and what was wrong not the websites or social media I used.
I think the senator meant that the information of children should not be given to advertisers, not that Facebook is responsible for monitoring what they do and blocking them from any type of content... but that's just how I interpreted it. I could be wrong.
Also a 90' kid and had no problem with porn and stuff. Even back in the day, if a kid wanted badly to see those kind of things, he could have done it. Facebook protecting kids is nice, but so is parenting and a kid can lie about his information to get around the protection anyway.

CNET liar zucker
it can't be run with the algorithms currently being applied.
CNET This whole non sworn in pathetic milk toast hearing was a joke! There was not even an investigation into the violations that this man and his company have perpetrated against the American people.
He is as are many of these senators "prolific liars"
This editing of the testimony is misleading when it comes to the monopoly part at least.

That counsel is so old they probably don’t even use the internet/ have a Facebook account
FrenchieFries no one has a facebook account except 30 y/o and parents
FrenchieFries Sooooo?
well it seems that the gov is trying to control the internet and these thriving companies or at least limit it.

I couldn’t do any better than Zuckerberg did. And I agree with his statements also. I feel that this system is flawed and shouldn’t be a determining factor of anything.
You pretty smart I want say I agree cause ion have social media but I feel you tho frfr ✌
Priorities.
hetaes True, but also let's not pretend all of our data on Facebook isn't being harvested haha.

that counsel is too old to ask sensible questions
But then you got questions like "if I'm *emailing on WhatsApp* ..."
The wrong use of terms speaks alone by itself but so what, right?
I kinda feel bad for Mark. He has to answer questions like that politely and politically when he probably wants to tear out his hair with how pointless a lot of those questions seemed.
I disagree, they are baiting him into statements, for example he said that we are the owners of our data, that's something that can be used against him in a number of ways and limits his options, i found that to be true with most of the questions. They want stronger restrictions, policies and laws, the only way to get that is to force him, that's what this whole thing is about else they'd still just be talking in his office
I think some of you are just missing the point of all this and are taking the questions way too literally.
Gerberger The only way to provide ads is to give away your data.

We don't need a law. It's as simple as that. Kids should be smart enough to decide what information they give to Facebook. The education system should explain the concept of privacy and also about cookies.
Except the senator is right
@@leofrancovich3892 isnt there a law for childrens data under q3
Who is hear after the TikTok CEO testify infront of the congress?
He actually answers the questions, unlike politicians who totally change the subject of a question.
Victor Valencia Pretty much what he was doing, especially at the end.
Victor Valencia You only watched the highlights. Watch the whole thing. Lmao
So politicians are more evil over this fish head?
Did you listen to the very end?
Manajust4fun They didn't even let him answer
They're all playing on the same team. This is just a little pony show to appease the public.
One Love lol
Yeah man they are all connected and want to screw the public.
One Love: that was my first thought. I mean, cmon...everyone has a price in this arena unfortunately.
Unbelievable, so much lying especially that they don't work with the government, that if you close the account they delete all the data that they collected of you and that they don't listen to your conversation or texting on whatsapp ( yes it's encrypted but they got the code and if you talk about let say sunglasses, the next day you get sunglasses advertisements on Facebook ),
And the Senators went way to easy on him, you can tell the his lobbyists where hard at work plus the Senators probably feared him because they all use Facebook and need it for getting elected again.
One Love agree with you 100%
When you sign up for Facebook you agree to dat shit. So why act so surprised...
A Happy Broccoli because people like to complain
Exactly. Hit the nail on the head, bro.
I signed up because I wanted to play Farmville.

🤣🤣🤣 him and Patrick Mahomes both sound like Kermit
Wow he does
It baffles me how incompetent these senators seem in having discussions, which is supposed to be almost the entire point of their job, aside from being informed about their topics, which they were also lacking in this case.
Lunarios thank you!
These senators are exactly what the problem with the world is today! Stupid people pretending to know shit beyond them and exhibiting confidence! This is a time where self confidence is a bigger asset than deep knowledge itself!
I like the Bad Lip Reading version of these highlights better......this is such a boring nonsense to watch
Citizen Mike why you comparing a joke video to a serious government video lmao
Citizen Mike I honestly couldn’t tell the difference
Kolos Kovacs Serious government video? Are you really this gullible? This whole hearing was bullshit political grandstanding. Nobody is forced to have a Facebook account.
kay jay I didn't say everyone was forced to have fb
kay jay nobody is forced to have a facebook account, no... But those who have an account had a right to privacy, along with other issues. This is a serious government issue because it puts a large amount of the US population's personal information at risk.
I mean, FaceBook users agreed to the Terms of Service. So they should know that because they agree to it, they are basically ready for the risks that come with it
John Smith well its their fault now reading terms of service "shrug"
@John Smith kids can't use fb due to age limit know that
@John Smith ????? It's the parents fault ...….… ??? Why do they let their kids use Facebook anyways isn't it a risk that you know gonna happen a lot of time when u decide to have a kid

No one reads them so it shouldn't count
Next get the Director of the CIA and FBI to answer what they do with all the data they are collecting and how much they collect. And why they are collecting all pictures of every person alive ?
TopEvt not every person, and mostly people don't even look through their pictures because of how much pictures there are
How do you know all this mr knowitall?
Why bother with data scraping when Facebook can handle it for you?
OMG, IT'S ALL A CONSPIRACY!!!
The govment gon come an tek yer baby!
well theyre definitely auto searching keywords in private messages and all posts public and private.
This is like watching a kid try and explain how the internet works to his grandfather.
Targeted ads aren't bad, putting adds onto a free service is also not bad.
Why is it Facebook's job to monitor what YOUR kids are doing online?
Isn't that called parenting?
If you ever have a kid, and got kidnapped or something, deal with it yourself. It's called parenting. Lol. Don't ever call the police.
Lust Snipe that's not the best example

I came here after the Bad Lip Reading video and I thought I was still on that video because of Zuckerberg's voice.😂😂
You should rename this video to "10 minutes of old men in the U.S. Senate having no idea of how the internet works".
Ole Hofsøy they do, but you are someone who does'nt know what this video is about.
Ole Hofsøy how are they old
If you don't want Facebook to monetise on your private information, It's simple, don't use it!

I love how, the democrat, "I would have to pay you, in order to not send me, using my personal information, something that I don't want".
Senator, a few years back, didn't you vote to make us pay for something some of us didn't want, and if we didn't buy it we paid for it anyway?
touche' XD

Strawman.
Kevin Anthony doesn’t seem like a strawman argument. Can you explain how it is?
it isn't zuckerberg's job to make laws. wtf were these questions.
jennifer g. lapan - You are kidding, right? If I run a multi-million or billion dollar company, I can contribute, pay-off, buy out a senator to promote a law that can benefit me. Why do you think there is no universal health care? Or why are we going to war? There are big corporations behind government decisions. FaceBook obviously has a big impact over consumer decisions.
Chris Gamarra ....EXACTLY!!
I hate that Mark stops and listens to them while they interrupt him all the time.
Burak Unutmaz let them!
Burak Unutmaz it's called respect which they couldn't do but Mark was doing ! It means people don't want to listen carefully but want to put their opinion only but Mark was listening fully after that he was replying so he can give a best answer of their some stupid questions
Shinsei Sunuwar
"best answer"
Such as
"Yes we got breached"
"No we're not going to fix it"
That's the reason why he became so wealthy. Because he listens to people.
they all have alotted time, so he is letting them ramble on so that he can run down their time and avoid questioning in deeper detail
Zuckerberg's most answers include:
Sinify the reason he wasn’t answering was for legal purposes... they were asking questions in a way that if he answers he would admitting to their accusations... he needed to be careful to word his answers in a way that could not be interpreted in the wrong way
blumenthal Knows exactly how it works
Yep. 🤷🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
Just don’t use Facebook. It’s not essential. I don’t use it. Problem solved.
David Trvjiyo I’ve been saying this for years and no one has giving me a single good and essential use for it.
t1m3l0rd I'll tell you a goid essential way I use it.
BADASS MARIO newspaper, messenger pigeon.

Mark did so well to analyze each of the questions and provide more insight in his answers!
Oh yes he did so well in censoring. Still asleep?
The only thing that made facebook prosper compared to other platforms at that time like myspace was that on facebook you couldn't see who visited your page.
That was a feature of myspace? That's a concept doomed to fail if I ever heard one.
Professer, but it was better than Facebook cuz look at the enormous privacy invasion Facebook allowed and profited from
not just that. at that time Facebook wasn't flooded with ads unlike myspace
There were a LOT more reasons than that
Daniel Livingston right? What kind of ignorant analysis was that?
lizard boi apologizes for invading privacy to old bois who invade privacy on a daily basis (2018-colorized)
This is the best spoof I've watched in years. Zucksucksaman'sdingdong needs a nomination.
Ok so regarding the last question. The internet including Facebook has no way of proving someone’s legitimate age, so making a law to protect minors is virtually useless. Perhaps the parents should be stepping in and regulating that instead of having Facebook take all the blame for everything. Facebook can only do so much
Furthermore you cannot have ads that will target users under 18.
Raphaël Paradis like what specifically?
Raphaël Paradis also just to be clear, television can market to minors but the internet can’t?
Too much commonsense for professional lawmaking.

Huh, so basically. "Hey mark, can you do our job so we won't close down facebook?"
It was a trap question. And Mark didn't fall for it.
diG you really didn’t get it then. They’re telling the idiot to do his job or they will take matters into their own hands. That’s what’s happening.
what interview where you watching, cause the committee was talking about working along side facebook to make it more secure.
I wish this senators paid this much attention to more important problems instead
Ha. As if...
They just like to give the appearance of caring. It's all about public perception and not really about doing anything.
Since when did personal privacy become unimportant
You willingly gave them all the information they have. Didn't you read the terms of service? If you post a photo on FB, they have rights to it.
Sure they might seem like nice people but money is their god and they'll do anything to get it. Sell you out to marketing groups? Government? No problem.
This sounds exactly like me trying to explain how a computer works over skype to my grandparents

Ashley elenor Good now 15
Daniel Bally ok 🤨
No, Senator. We don't need a law. We need stricter parenting. Monitor what your children are doing and putting out there. Understand what this technology means to them, rather than just rely on vaguely worded terms of services that none of you can be bothered to read. This was painful to watch, like trying to explain IKEA furniture directions to an antique table.
Richie Beck And how do you enforce stricter parenting...?
@@mastertoad2 By having more taught better equipped parents. I see there are some idiots here who feel that this bill is right. Ive always been taught by my parents too never leave my personal info out on the internet and I never have. I have buddies who are data protectors for huge companies. He tried finding my name he could not find it to say the least. This is the same thing as saying a child took the car keys and drove off in it and they blame the manufacturer not the child and parents.
@Goku-Chan How sad. A 13 year old like you should not be allowed on yt.
@Goku-Chan i can see your age from your comment. You are definately not over 16. Its likr saying my son took my car and crashed it! Its toyotas fault!
@Daniel Sanders That is exactly my point! :D
I think Mark did pretty well considering
how can he be low battery if he had a wireless charging pad under him?
Considering.... what? That he's not human?
Did well at what? Deflecting questions and blame onto the company when he was the one who intentionally let 3rd parties buy private information without the users knowing while also censoring and outright banning people who they disagree with while letting groups like Isis have a Facebook page.. yeahhh if you support this asshole in any way even passively you are either ignorant of his wrong doings or you are just another sheep who had no idea wtf is going on.
Ani Vai very well
it's very interesting to see the negotiation between business and government so open and transparent.

When you sign up you agree to their terms and conditions and if you don’t know what you’re signing up for that’s your fault
and they are surprised that you have to pay to remove ads, I think they don't know ads get them money.
your brain must big, you make sense

Apart from the fact that facebook has been collecting data off 3rd party people who dont have facebook, through the people who do have facebook...

They dont need a law for children under 16. Isnt parenting still a thing?
Beth Hart... not really anymore
Got plans this weekend?
Social media is everywhere. Kids can get into it with a damn phone. Don't pull this "you should be parenting" horse shit. I've got a 2 year old, and a 4 year old, and it's impossible to keep an eye on them 24/7 as it is. I couldn't imagine trying to control everything they do when they're older. Especially when they can get on a computer just about anywhere.
Guys McFellas if you are truly concerned. Use passwords, put things up high so they cant reach them.

Amazing how disconnected are american politicians from the tech reality. Has any of them gone online beyond checking thier emails?
I'm shocked I tell you, shocked I say...okay, not that shocked.
They not ceckung their email.. their assistant did
Yes they “send emails using whatsapp”
this was a joke! all im hearing is negative comments about mark zuckberg than the actual congress????!? i give up on humanity
They are not that disconnected. They are merely asking questions that the people who voted them in and the people who gave them money wants answered. Very few, if ever, questions from Senators and Congressmen in a hearing like this are their own.
Think of politicians as a talking puppet.
Take a shot every time Zuck's team has to follow up a senator on something.

Senator: Can you please incriminate yourself.
Zuckerberg: No.
Senator: I yield my time.
Why do we think congress is smart enough to ask questions about such a complex business.
Cute. NSA anyone? What privacy?
Ian Arko NSA is internal. What this guy did was sold information to third parties outside the country
Both are still shit
NSA close their eyes when it comes to american companies unfortunately.
Everyone who works for the NSA needs to be arrested for violating the 4th amendment
He will just pay billions to close the case
exactly, some are woke
He will pay much less than that
Thats why he kept saying "my party will get back to you" meaning he going bribe probably

The word “Facebook” gives me the feeling of “Big brother is watching you” from the work 1984 by George Orwell.
This is the biggest waste of time in the history of the United States congress

why does facebook have to regulate your children what happened to parenting? Yes, I think they can do something to make is a safer place for children, but I grew up with AIM,AOL, chatrooms, msn, and I turned out fine because my parents were there for me and told me what was right and what was wrong not the websites or social media I used.
Travis Westcott same here. And we had curfew on the internet
Capri it all depends where you come from. Same thing for me I was subject to all that as well, except ofc I was born in the 2000s.
I think the senator meant that the information of children should not be given to advertisers, not that Facebook is responsible for monitoring what they do and blocking them from any type of content... but that's just how I interpreted it. I could be wrong.
At this point it's the parents that need the parenting.
Also a 90' kid and had no problem with porn and stuff. Even back in the day, if a kid wanted badly to see those kind of things, he could have done it.
Facebook protecting kids is nice, but so is parenting and a kid can lie about his information to get around the protection anyway.
