Just found your channel after building both of my daughters a Hornet and a Grasshopper about a week ago. Best decision ever! Great excuse to go outside or take a walk to the park. Watched dozens of your videos since the builds and there's one thing that despite all the other companies offerings has me always looking back at Tamiya kits. The build. Nothing beats the experience of building your own RC car. Now I've got my own kit on the way. A re-re Sand Scorcher and, of all the RC I've ever previously owned I've never been as excited to get a new RC as I am now. I've previously only owned one Tamiya car and it was an M-03 Chassis Sazuki Swift. Fun little machine. Happy RC!
I think the thunder dragon looks better in silver if i'm honest, however I remember seeing it in silver back in the late 80's so I guess it reminds my of the good old days in that colour lol. The manta ray however I think looks a lot better in white. At a quick glance it reminds me of a certain Tamiya 4WD who's box art colours are white with red and blue trim and black wheels a car that I believe your partially fond of. Hahaha
Yep that’s it Glen!!!!. I’m sold on the white completely!!. The extra details you have added are superb.. Favourite bit for me is the wheels they really suit it.. Success Glen👍👍👍👍👍
I think it looks mint in white. The line details and yellow shocks really work. All the colours are spot on and work together for me. Nice seeing you do something away from box art and you crushed it!
Wow, that’s the first Manta Ray that I think looks good....really good! All the stuff you did (white paint, extra angle on the wing, clear canopy, driver figure, and black line tape detailing) all come together to make the body look excellent. Really nice job! 👍🏻👍🏻
Vastly better than the box art- the white brings to mind the Dirt Thrasher variant but the Manta Ray decals are nicer, and the driver and clear canopy is awesome!
I like the new shell as they’ve closed the rectangular gap just ahead of the rear wing; Where the red ‘Tamiya’ decal sits. For those that didn’t own an original the ceramic resistor for the mechanical speed speed controller stuck out of that area to help keep it cool. When you swapped to electronic you were left with a hole in the shell. It does look better in white than silver 👍🏼. On my original I think the cockpit screen was painted black.
I like to make my collection box art but this is the best Manta Ray I've seen. I personally never liked the design but what you did with this has changed my opinion.
Nailed it! Driver figures make it for Me, specially Pilots in My RC planes, lost a few of Them in crashes too, ahahaha. The Driver body plate thingies I think We all have a few laying round. Wild Willys head looks great in everything. Beauty TL, You are one happy Boy!
Yep like the choice and execution, it actually enhances the somewhat quirky design. Also really like the Egress wheels on it they are such a nice buggy set.
Bang on. Manta was my first, loved it, need to get it goin again. But I was never a big fan of the colour, saw it in white and few different blues, much better
Never liked the Manta myself, but damn it does look like a completely different car in white, and those egress wheels are the icing on the ray, Awesome job!
Looks great Glen! The plan for mine is to go a shade darker silver or gun metal grey. As for the wheels, I'll do a slightly darker grey than the body with red nuts. Sorry for the late comment, but I still drop by here and there my friend.... Keep the content coming!
Absolutely stunning job! I had a Manta Ray in the mid nineties, didn’t really like its aesthetic (I did mine in a metallic purple I think), but this is happily have! Awesome job ✌🏼
Do you know what Glenn, at the beginning of the video I was doubting you but now that I see it’s painted…… It looks amazing Glenn well done. A lot more contrast.
That came out really really nice. When i made my sons rere manta i didn't have the original tamiya paint so i used a little lighter gray spray, almost white and i was also thinking that it looks much better then the original silver color. Having a new sticker sheet and an original wing and shell from the 90s, i think im going to paint them in white😁👍 Your Manta suits your Tamiya Legend T-shirt perfectly👌😁
Hi Glenn, I didn't think I'd find myself agreeing with you regarding the box art for this particular model but when you finished it in the white I was quite surprised at how much better it looks. Nice choice of colour I think, the white seems to have brought so much more of the body shape to light. ATB Darren.
Good morning Glen!! Another magical Saturday morning with you! Great video as always!! I wish I was more daring like you as I never stray away from box art. I usually like black as well but something about Tamiya colours make everything look amazing. Anyways looking forward to Sundays video! Thanks buddy keep up the great work!
Did'nt think id like the Manta Ray more than a Thunder-shot but man It Came Up Swell, Gotta get me a Manta Ray Real Soon Glen You Really Knocked that out of the Park Buds :-)
Love it in white Glenn👍 What I might do differently, is have a look at JC Racing, they’re going to bring out the Egress wheel in 2.2”. A white 2.2” wheel would look stunning on the shelf👍
Wow, that bodyshell is absolutely superb mate!! I wasn't sure when you said you were going to do it white, but it's come out so well. I love the black line tape bits around the canopy, on the back of the body and on the rear wing, really brings it out nicely. And adltering the rear wing angle was a stroke of genius, it does look much better now. Great job!!
Nailed it with the white. I also liked the cab with the masking tape on 😁. That tinted gold / yellow color made the body look very futuristic. Completely agree with the tires. they have never been my favorites, perhaps try the white Top-Force wheels ? I think the car lives up more with white wheels. But the black wheels are bang on, it looks way better than box art!
Looks smashing Glen. I went the other way with colour gun metal grey. I have black shocks TF shock towers Egress wheels, Manta is funny car until you have one I don't think you appreciate that it quite good to look at but fantastic driver especially for the money, might stick a pic of mine up on legends 😉
I gotta say Glenn that came out beautiful bud!!! I'm a huge fan of the Manta Ray family. I have a Super Manta Ray, a Manta Ray that has be converted to a Top Force/Race Ray except it's got a G10 white fiberglass chassis and top deck and will be building a Manta Ray and a stadium truck once I get more parts. I feel box art is really bland on it. The colors that really pop on that body are white, pearl white, metallic grey and metallic blue! The Egress wheels definitely look great on it as well, For part 2 please fit the FRP parts from the Top Force and aluminum wheel hexes and the aluminum steering kit. Then later the aluminum hubs and steering arms. Great job bro👍👍
You’ve done a great job on that. It’s those detailing lines on the wing I think works really well with the white. There’s more contrast compared to the box art. That’s why it works better.
Bloody fantastic. I've also never been a fan of the Manta Ray box art, my first one I painted Black, 2nd one I painted Gun Metal Grey. But mate, it looks epic in White. I'm going to paint my next one White. Where do you get that Black line tape from? On the subject of non box art, my Blitzer Beetle, and Stadium Thunder are both white, my Brat is Blue, my other Brat body is Gun Metal Grey. I've done a Gun Metal Grey Stadium Blitzer, Metallic Blue Stadium Blitzer, Flat Red Monster Beetle, Metallic Orange Blitzer Beetle, the list goes on, Out of the 23 RC's I have, only 4 are box art, my Candy Lime Green edition Grasshopper, my Wild One, my Super Astute, and my Top Force. As you can probably tell, I'm not a box art fan myself. Keep up the awesome channel, I love your content.
Hi, again!! With the hole in the driver's head you could use some sprue to fill it just glue it in and when it's dry trim it and sand it you might need to use more glue to fill any gaps, and when your happy with it paint it!!. Steve. UK.
Yep definitely👍, I'm thinking tamiya did the manta ray silver because the actual fish is silver but white is much better! I think the hotshot 2 don't look good in black should be done in a gun metal colour?
@@adambillings2785 What you need to do now is research Lipo batteries my friend. There performance, power, capacity and runtimes are way superior to anything else. But!!! Not a massive fan of the white but I agree the box art isn't up to scratch either. I'd love to see one with a deep gun metal metallic. The darker shade with the deeper sparkle should emphasise the decals and further complement the yellow splashes.
Every time you “augh” with frustration from things going wrong, I hope you realise, it is helping me, and no-doubt hundreds of others, like myself, in how to do it the 'right way’ the first time. Tips and tricks learnt the hard way. Even if there are things you do though you’ve “no” idea why you do that”, keep including them, as we might be able to sus out some kind of benefit you instinctively know. I guess Tamyia often go ‘non-white’ on box art to add extra value to those of us (I mean me!) that have no natural aesthetic sensibility. I do have to say, and this is in no way a criticism, just an opinion, I think the Egress wheels, although special in their own right, miss the humble/entry/approachable feeling Tamyia were aiming for with this kit. I personally would have tried to paint the standard wheels to match the body, but I appreciate, the shade they come out after, even using the same paint, is different ‘naked’ verses, the body, possible due to the effects of the poly- bodyshell. Maybe your body painting “Guru” in the UK might be able to help us all out with this one. Once again, deep gratitude for your efforts, teachings and overall, awesome content. Thanks.
My second car was a Manta Ray, I didn't build it, my Mum had the shop build it for my Christmas, they painted it white and I hated it. I wanted it box art. I remember being really happy getting the car but really disappointed at the body. Yours looks nice with the clear cab. Would finish it off if you could 3D print a cockpit.
Never really liked the Manta Ray - always looked a bit like a cheap Nikko car with that body. But seeing the changes you made to it really shines a new light on it for me... I 'm starting to like it! :-) Nice job Glenn! All the best, Toby
Very nicely set up, I like it very much. Instead of the yellow dampers, blue aluminum dampers (DF-03) would also be very nice. 3D printed parts for the spoiler as well as the driving figure then it would be perfect. Time for a 3D printer ???
I am going to completely steal your idea of the clear canopy I will also paint the front of the can be identical to yours but I believe I'm going to go with the pearl white color. . I completely understand and believe you when it comes to the Subaru mine is the PS blue. On the manta ray I'm also going to paint the chassis White. I painted the chassis of the boomerang white and it just completed it perfectly. Another vehicle that I changed the color was the Mercedes-Benz C10. I started painting it in full metallic silver but when I backed it with Rust-Oleum blue paint that I had lying around it became a mirror like finish. So the Mercedes now appears to be a mirror like finish. And I have departed from one other boxer and that was the sand scorcher, it maintains the exact same pattern as the box art but instead of blue and white we have camouflage and white, yes I said camouflage all of the panels that would be white in this instance including the roof line and the engine cover are the camouflage. All of the box art lines are there except they are camouflage. . The wheel fenders, they are PS olive green. It sounds absolutely ridiculous but it looks incredible.
Hi Glen, I think the wheels are lost in black, you can’t really see any details about them in black, you should paint them white to show them off, and the body shell looks awesome in white instead of the silver, really sweeeeeeet rc. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧
Love your channel just ordered the escort wrc which should come in April last tamiya I had was a bear hawk in the early 90s have looked but doesn’t look like they sell the bear hawk does a bear hawk shell fit on a current chassis ? as seen a shell on eBay always wanted the escort cosworth after my bear hawk so I’m excited for the wrc even though I’m 39 now lol 👍🏻
Your Manta Ray looks awesome. Much better than the box art.
The BEST looking Manta Ray! I paused the video and took screenshot of it... its looks amazing 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I agree that the grey gets lost against the silver
The Tamiya egress looks good in white.
Yep totally agree 🤩🤩🤩
Looks nice👌 Only thing I'd do is lightly 'SMOKE' the cockpit window.
You do very good work nice job
Thanks Ronnie 🤩👊🏻
I would put two drivers in the cockpit, it would look awesome! 👍
Interesting 🤔👊🏻
Really very nice .
I love the new wheels
Bravo !!
Thank you 😊
So far so good white was a great choice
Thanks buddy 😊
Nice build Glenn. Can you fit a lipo in the Manta Ray?
Hi Glen, I think the wheels are lost in black, you can’t really see any details about them in black, you should paint them white to show them off, and the body shell looks awesome in white instead of the silver, really sweeeeeeet rc. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧
Excellent thanks for the feedback my friend 😊👊🏻
Love your channel just ordered the escort wrc which should come in April last tamiya I had was a bear hawk in the early 90s have looked but doesn’t look like they sell the bear hawk does a bear hawk shell fit on a current chassis ? as seen a shell on eBay always wanted the escort cosworth after my bear hawk so I’m excited for the wrc even though I’m 39 now lol 👍🏻
Excellent I’m looking at maybe getting one of those new Escorts myself 😎👊🏻
If it was my Manta Ray I would paint it PS-16 or Black. It does looks pretty good in the white though!
Yeah ps-16 could look good 😎👊🏻
Looks great 👍
Love it mate 👌
