And just buying something in such a huge box with incredible art on the front. Especially when you were a kid! I still remember picking out my Grasshopper and Wild willy from the store back in the day. If i had more disposable income and a whole lot more time, then I'd definitely love to get back into Tamiya RC again. Ho-hum!!🤔
I am currently using an old Manta Ray chassis with brand new TOP FORCE wheels tyres, body shell and black shocks, can't wait to see more videos of this.
Great build Glen, theirs nothing like opening the box of a new of re re no matter our age my 1st Tamiya was in 79' I built a Clod and still have her on the shelf built a superclod with a hot racing all metal chassi that's my go to clod now, I own around 12 Tamiya rc's in my vast collection 😎👍

Really appreciate this video. Just bought my first ever Tamika RC kit which is the Manta Ray. This is a perfect video for a novice like myself. I plan on watching more of your videos to make sure my Manta is spot on! Thanks 🎉
I now have a Super Manta Ray, a standard Manta Ray, a VERY upgraded Manta Ray and an old original Topforce. I think I like this chassis too. Also the Manta Ray looks like a kids dream...futuristic in an 80s style of the future and also, quite shark-like. It doesn't look 100% serious, but it's a capable formula and tonnes of fun even on a silver can on a tight track.
You could remedy the slow front end rebound by either using a thinner oil or increasing the oil flow in the damper, additional holes in the plunger to lessen resistance, I think when it's excellerating it will actually work better by counteracting sharp front end lift! I remember back in the day suspension set up being opposite rake, front end high! Lol I always had full travel for off-road jumping!
Awesome vid, takes me way back to my original kit. The alloy gears were always a problem, the idler in particular used to wear badly as it ran between the spur and diff. Used to be able to buy aftermarket nylon sets, that what I did after I ran off two alloy idlers. The standard spur wasn’t that great either, I recall fitting a 19T to mine with a slightly up-rated motor and electronic speedo. A rear ball diff also helped reduce the tendency for the idler to wear if you tinkered with the pre-load a bit. The lower wishbones used to have 3 holes in so you could get it lower by using the outer position.
Now I see why this car was so important to Tamiya and Tamiya enthusiasts. The tub inspired the first series of Tamiya touring cars and a lot of the suspension geometry was carried over to future models because I see a lot of parts on this car that's used on my Gravel Hound
On the front and rear rebound of the shocks. Maybe the little internal disks with the holes in that sit on the pistons and let the oil back through the shocks. As you know mate there are a couple of choices for shock rebound. They must be different as are the front and rear springs. Just my humble opinion bud!! Great video once again my friend!!
I loved my MantaRay was my first ever tamiya kit. The poor thing about this kit is the weak front shock towers. They were a bit too bendy and mine split where the screws go through to attach it to the chassis. I also remember those red steering knuckles splitting where the ball joint goes. Apart from that I adored it.
Agree that DF 01 is fun to build. A maxed out mantaray is a really good idea. FRP tower and the parts from the top force build. Keep the yellow shocks and bathtub chassis they are a bit of mantaray's DNA. otherwise it will be." He ceased to be mantatay and became top force"
Manta Ray was always a favourite of the grass racers back "in the day" before other manufactures took off. I do like them..... would be interested to see it fully blinged without being a Top Force replica. But..... bit like Triggers Broom then. Lol! Great video as always...... sorry I'm late to these..... working my way through though. :) 👍
I love the DF01 but the Manta Ray is maybe my least favourite. The Terra Conqueror though is probably my favourite Tamiya buggy of all time. How about a non box art Blazing Star. I think you can remove the plastic gears without the speed gear set. You just need the ta02 gear set 50529. The speed gears are getting rare but these seem readily available. Youve inspired me again. I'm off to build something 👍

The original hopped up car: cpr unit, dyna tech motor, hi caps, light weight wheels and hybrid spikes. Looks great and keeps it manta ray with the tub chassis.
The re-re has the upgraded dog bones compared to the original! The original dogbones had white plastic balls on the ends of them and wore through really quickly!
Great video as always. Im really looking forward to seeing this, as this came out after I lost interest in Tamiya cars (dont judge me!). Anyway, cant wait to see the finished build and thanks for a very interesting video. Stay safe my friend. 🙂👍
im currently building my Manta now. its a mix of stock rere kit, aluminum upgrades, TA02 1 way gear, metal motor mount, TA03 ball diff on front, metal gears in rear diff and 15T brushed motor with 18Tpinion. that U hanger in 10:22 is weird that it doesnt secure to anything behind it.. the front gear box part is done and the aluminum dampers installed. i got the prop shaft upgrade and i see that you'd need to remove that tiny antenna thing on the top tray as the stock prop shaft and the aluminum one are not the same width. im building this up from parts and not from a kit/box, it s fun project.
Cool stuff, but those red front knuckles kinda spoil the look. You can get black Jazrider Hotshot ones they might be the same as the Manta Ray ones? If so that would be a nice addition.

Big defect with the DF/TA-01 chassis is the thin rod on the steering rack. Over time that wears with use and can bend with impact. The TA-02 fixed that problem.
