    What a beauty! I don't think the Manta Ray gets the love it deserves. The chassis is very capable, and for a budget platform, it performs pretty good. And how does a guy not love the Manta Ray inspired body?!?! It's so Tamiya!

      Thanks Fil! I really enjoyed the build and it is a terrific little buggy. i got it out on Sunday and it did very well on the track, i could soften up the shocks a little but it was ripping. Throwing dust clouds in the air, it was a lot of fun. It is 100% Tamiya, nobody else has the imagination of design like they have. Granted some worked out a bit better than others but I really like this one!

    I don’t know why but I love the love the futuristic anthropomorphic RC buggy designs of the late 1980s and 1990s. Tamiya did these like no other company I knew about. This could have something to do with being a kid then 📺 👾 😂

      They definitely had some very unique and interesting designs and I do like this one a lot! I think it kind of flopped here when it came out as everyone wanted an RC10 or anything that was competing with them at the time so when something like the Manta Ray hit the shelves it was too out of character to be a big seller. I enjoy the weird and quirky ones but I do also love the clean classic buggies as well. Obviously I have a problem with loving too many of them LOL!

    Can’t believe this came out in 1990, remember seeing it as a kid but was always happy with Hotshot 2 and Thunder Dragon at the time oh and my Monster Beetle! Can get one of Amazon at the minute for £107 and am tempted to add to the collection! Great video, enjoyed with my morning coffee too

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  2 месяца назад +1

      Time flies! I think when these came out in the US the classic designed buggies like the RC10 were the hot ticket so the unique and uncommon body styles of this did not make it a huge seller. It is a shame as I do like the chassis a lot and they could have done a lot more with it. It was a very nice and relaxing build and the simple paint job makes it easier as well. I am glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for starting out the weekend with me!

    Lovely build Addam. I like how this one looks..kinda similar to the ThunderShot in some ways. It also reminds me of the ‘alien’ buggy designs of the late 80s. Didn’t quite like the look of the Top Force at first, but it has since grown on me. I think it looks super aggressive.. Looks aside, this chassis is a joy to drive. You’ll love it.👍😊

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks! It was a very nice one to build and yes, it does have the alien vibe to it. I think that is one of the reasons they did not sell super well here when they were released originally. They were fighting for a market share against the RC10 era of buggies and it was too odd for many folks. I am hoping when I build the Top Force it grows on me as well. I don't dislike it but I have never been a fan either so I am hoping once I get it built I lean more towards the fan side! Take care and have a great weekend!

      It was a very nice build and I love the looks of it. I did get it out for some laps today, it ran well and I had a great time with it. The motor runs a little hot so I may gear down a bit. I was a bit surprised the motor was so hot but I was not holding back either so there is that! LOL! I'll get it all edited in the queue very soon!

    I love this car. It's shows the beginnings of what would become the Topforce and evo. Never noticed the issue with the body untill you showed it on yours.. Checked mine and it's the same.. Something went wrong with the manufacturing for sure. I did the ujs at the front.. Alloy motor mount and centre drive Shaft from Jazrider. Changed all the screw pins out to hing pins and added blue springs.

      I really enjoyed the build and I look forward to the Top Force as well. I am hoping once I have it in front of me I will change my mind on the looks. I think having it in front of me will help a lot. All your upgrades sound like sound ones to add to it. I generally don't go too far down the upgrade road as it taps into the funds for other kits. I like you went with the functional and reasonable upgrades instead of just tossing a pile of blue alloy on it to say it is fully upgraded when 50% of it is just blue bit and really don't improve much! LOL!

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  2 месяца назад +1

      I agree that building any of them is usually a great day! This one went together very well and I just took it out for a run the other day and it drove very well also, was really kicking up the dust! The body molding issues it seems is fairly common, multiple others commented their buggies have the same flaw. I was just very alarmed when I removed the protective film and saw what looked like a paint sag! I was super careful to use very light coats and not cause any runs so I was very confused on how it happened. Thankfully it was Tamiya's fault and not mine! LOL!

      It was a fun build and it should be a blast running around the track. I hope to find time today to get out there with it! I know they did a lot more on-road cars with this setup than they did the buggies. I think they had better luck selling them at the time as the rest of the world was too in love with the RC10s and the other buggies that were competing with them to pay these much mind.

      I got out with this one yesterday and other than needing a bit thinner oil in the shocks it was great. It was getting jostled around by the lumps and bumps a little too much but overall it was ripping around well. It was definitely kicking up the dust clouds! I am looking forward to building the Top Force. I am hoping once i have it in front of me I will like the looks of it a bit more, I am sure I will!

    DF-01 is such a cool chassis! I haven't got this one, but I have the Top Force and I love it! Like you said, it's a joy to put together! I think you'll be happy you put the faster motor in it, it drives great! Bummer with the imperfections in the body, but once it's out in the dirt, you won't notice, he he... Yeah, rain and mud here at the moment also, he he...

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  2 месяца назад

      I really enjoyed the build and I am sure the Top Force will be even better with the fancier parts in it! I am hoping the looks of the TF grow on me as well, I am sure they will. The odd molding in the body of this are not terrible and you don't see them unless you are holding it in your hands. I just thought when I pulled off the protective film I had sagging in the paint and I had made sure to be light and consistent with the paint. I was relieved it was Tamiya that screwed it up and not me! LOL! I hope to get out with it today and get some running done with it, we have rain coming in this week so I have to get out before that shows up. We desperately need it so I am not complaining. Take care Mads and I am sure you will find something fun to tinker on since the weather is not great there currently!

    Hi Addam and great video as ever! Good timing too as I have yet to build my Manta so it was great to hear your thoughts. I just checked the body on mine and it looks like it has some imperfections like yours, but I had to look very hard to see them! I agree with you, this buggy looks awesome and beats the Top Force on looks IMHO. Great photos at the end too, pal. Thanks for sharing and all the best! :D

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  2 месяца назад +1

      That's cool, you will enjoy the build of this one Mark! It all goes together very nicely and looks terrific once complete. The molding issues are not terrible but when you peel the protective film off and see what looks like paint sags, I was annoyed as I made it a point to put several very light coats on to avoid any an d all runs and sags in the paint! I was relieved when I found it was Tamiya's fault and not mine! From 3 feet away they are unnoticeable so it is not a big deal. I am hoping that when I build the Top Force it is one I like a lot better in person. I don't dislike it but I have never been a big fan of it either. I am hoping once it is in my hands I sit back and like the look of it a lot more. Take care my friend and have a great weekend!

      For the price point it is really hard to beat. I think it is going to drive very well out on the track also, it has that old school 4wd DNA in it and so far those buggies drive really well on the track.

  • @JF-RC
    @JF-RC 2 месяца назад +1

    Hey Addam, what a great Sunday you must of had...doesn't get any better than a quiet Sunday and a Tamiya kit to get engrossed in 😉😁. I'm with you on this one, I like the body style and the cues that Tamiya used from the awesome Manta Ray, it's very futuristic and in my books, makes it cool 😁😉. I also like how Tamiya used a different system on the coil over shocks, they used a clamping collar, as opposed to slot in collars, gives infinite adjustment of those large shocks 😉. Shame about the moulding defects on the body, but it's not noticeable on camera, and when you're whizzing around the track, you're only going to see the awesome job you did on that bodywork, looks amazing my friend. I've been eyeing up this or the DF-03 Dark Impact (its the ball diffs that making me curious on the DF-03😂). Anyway, it's looking awesome, best wishes to you and the family 😉😊😁

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks John, I am glad you enjoyed it and it is a very nice buggy! The clamping collars as a near variation for this one, makes it more sporty! The body was a bit of a bummer but it looks fine from 3 feet away so it is all good. I thought I had ruined the paint and I was extra careful to not go overboard and get runs or sags in the paint. So I was a bit relieved I did not mess up! LOL! I hope to get out with it today for some fun with it. I have a Dark Impact here to build and I did the Aero Avante on the DF-03 platform. It is a very cool chassis to build. You will be surprised on how small the chassis really is on it. It does make fitting the electronics in the a bit of a challenge but the 1060 goes in there and clears everything. There is a lot of wire management to do though as there is a lot of wiring with nowhere goo to put it so have the zip ties ready and don't be afraid to use them! LOL! Take care and have a great weekend my friend!

    Awesome buggy Addam! I like the montage format, I’m going to try that next time I do a build. You shouldn’t be too disappointed in the body, with a shape that complex it would be hard not to have weird stretch areas (could barely tell in the picture) can’t wait to see it running!

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks, I really enjoyed building it. I much prefer stopping and taking a picture as I build than trying to record it in segments or in time lapse. It give you all a better view of the parts and things going together. It can be hard to stop yourself to take pics though! I get wrapped up in the build and realize i missed the last two steps of pics all the time! LOL! It is also helpful when the build goes on for several evenings when time allows as there is not having to remember what you were talking about or getting the same camera angles, you just keep snapping pics as you go!
      The body marks were more concerning when I though the paint had sagged on me! I really tried to get light, even coats and not rush anything. I peeled the film back and was like "how in the world did I get that big run?"!!! Then I realized it was s molding error and I was relieved I did not screw up and I can blame Tamiya for this one! LOL! It is not very noticeable but it does jump out in certain angles but running around out on the track you'll never notice so it is all good! Several others said they have the same mark in the same spot so it must be some sort of shrinkage/warpage issue in the molding process.

    Great build Addam! It’s been on my list for awhile but for some reason I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Interesting about the paint…I’m not a lexan painter…or a should say I don’t really like painting lexan…but I think those “extra creases” would take me over the top with frustration. But from a chassis point of view I’m interested in the three piece design. I kind of like building the different sections independently of each other. Anyway great build! The body blemishes kind of sucks but it looks fine from a 2 feet away, you have to be right up on it and in the right light to see it well. I was mostly alarmed when I pulled the protective film off and saw it and though I messed up the paint. I really made sure to go lightly and take my time with it so when i thought it was a paint sag I was blown away. Thankfully it was Tamiya's fault and not mine! The modular construction is nice and it just goes from a few chunks to a completed buggy in a few steps at the end. I will get it out on the track very soon!

    Great build Addam!
    I seem to remember from back in the day that Tamiya really got it right with this chassis...... it is durable, and handles like an absolute treat.
    It's as if they combined all their gained knowledge from the hot shot series, and the following thunder shot series of chassis to produce this, at the time groundbreaking next level of four wheel drive buggy!
    Which as we all know later morphed into the highly successful top Force and subsequent TAO series of touring car chassis.
    I would be most interested to see how the manta Ray performs against the top Force around your garden track...... I'm willing to bet there won't be much between them!
    This re-release is an absolute bargain at the price Tamiya are now selling it for...... the only reason why I am not buying one is because I already own a top force and a top Force Evo.
    I respect your opinions on the top Force, personally I think it is an absolute eye sore from the front.....
    But from the side, above, and from the rear I think it looks devine!
    As for the manta ray, your term quirky certainly sums it up!
    Look forward to seeing it out in Action mate! 😊 👍 👍 👍

      Thanks James! I do like the design of it and it is much nicer than the HS and TS series as it has the open chassis tub where it is much easier to work on and fit things! I really enjoyed the build and I can see why the simple but effective design went into quite a few kits. I think you may be right and there won't be much difference in the two of them on the track. A slight edge to the TF with the better chassis but overall I think they are going to be fairly identical. I do like the TF, just was neve overly drawn to the body design. It just has the body of a door stop to me. You are right at certain angle it look better. I am hoping once I have it sitting in front of me I will like it a lot more. I am drawn to the weird and quirky ones anyways so the Manta Ray is cool to me. I am really going to try and get it out for a run today before the rains move in this week. Hopefully I have time to get out there. Take care mate!

    Great video Addam, i really liked the music you put over the build pictures etc, nice and chilled for a Sunday morning! Buggy looks good, shame about the moulding issues. Would be interested to know if its a one off or others are the same. As for the Top Force, I prefer the body style of that but not with the top roof scoop, I'd be selling that body and using an aftermarket that deletes it. Nothing against the Manta Ray though still looks great, everyone has their favourites, if we all liked the same things life would get very boring!

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks Tony, I am glad you enjoyed it! I try and keep it mixed up with the music. I have heard from several others in the comments that they have the exact same issues with their bodies in the same places so I assume there was a shrinkage or warping issue in the molding process for them. It is not terribly noticeable but when I peeled off the protective film off and saw what looked to be a big paint sag I was devastated as I made sure to go slow and easy with the paint to avoid that! I was relieved it was Tamiya's fault and not mine! LOL! I know Owen at Revive RC did a body shell for the TF without the scoop on it and I agree, it looks a lot better without it there. I don't dislike the TF but it has always looked a bit like a door stop to me. I am hoping it will be much nicer in person and I change my mind on it. If not then it may get a Dirt Thrasher body put on it. I am sure I will enjoy it in person though. You are very right, if we all liked the same thing the world would be very bland!

    The car looks great and I like the body designs better than the Top force. Smoking the windshield was a very good idea. As I looked at this body it reminded of the dragon series cars. I questioned popped into my very old brain. Did Tamiya start the concept of the cab forward designs? I have never understood why they choose shocks with such a contrasting color. You diid an excellent job on the car and gave a very good explanation of the build. If they could've incorporated a body design like this into their newer high end buggies it would've been great.

      I think Tamiya and Kyosho were doing the fighter jet cockpit and the alien space craft designs long before anyone ever thought of doing the cab forward designs on race buggies. It was more of an inspiration concept than a performance concept.
      For some reason they loved making yellow shocks, I am not sure if it was taken from the classic yellow Monroe shocks or someone they just loved having the bright, stand-out colored shocks. I personally prefer them to either be coordinated with the body or wheels or just be black or grey.

I laid the masking tape down and traced the outside of the body with a ultra fine sharpie pen and used a sharp hobby knife to cut the tape around the window and front nose section.
