LIZ PLANK: FOR THE LOVE OF ME
Filmmaker, award-winning journalist, author, and our beloved co-host, Liz Plank gives us insight into the experiences that have shaped her life from childhood to her relationships and career. Liz shares how she often looked to other people to determine her worth, how she’s doing the work to own her power, and why she stopped pushing men away and chose to invite them in. With her brilliance, and of course with research and data, Liz reminds us that we are all human and we are all connected.

I got to release unexpressed pain around 2 things that I wasn't expecting.
    1. When Liz mentioned asking God:"where have you been all the times that I needed you?" For her to be answered:"I've always been here, but you kept distracting yourself from me"
Justin then went on to quote something from his faith and that's when I broke.
I realised that I had never experienced God in religious practices and institutions but in moments when I connected to myself. Like on my walks to and from school, I would converse with God and feel the presence.
    2. "When you have been abandoned you tend to re-abandon yourself". A couple weeks ago I was "doing the work"😂😂(inner child work/parts work as it were) and realised that I don't feel safe in the world coz I don't feel safe with myself. The unconditional love and presence I've longed for from others are things that I've been depriving myself.
    Thank you for this episode.
    Love y'all ♥️

this hit home for me. i was neglected as a child and resonated with liz’s experiences more than i would like to admit. the part where they mention how we feel abandoned, and through that we continue to abandon ourselves. at the end of the day, it’s all about self-love, care & respect. currently crying. thank you for this episode

Liz, your answer to when Jamey asked what makes you qualified to be part of the man enough conversation was so badass. I was not expecting that answer and yet it was the perfect answer. You are definitely the best listener out of the 3 of you and I was so happy to learn more about you after this episode! As someone who also needs to show myself I can do life on my own before I enter a serious relationship I totally feel you.

I’m always trying to throw this podcast on or watch these videos when my boyfriend is around-dropping subtle hints because I think he’d benefit a lot from “doing the work” (lol). And he got defensive when the conversation about broken men finding broken women and keeping them broken for their own power and benefit. And he said it before Jamie, “well not all men!!” Then Jamie added that disclaimer that we don’t generalize here and I saw a few walls come down. So thank you for keeping it real, is all.

Just the beginning when Liz says "I think not feeling enough is my baseline" Jesus🙌 I can't tell you how deep I felt that. When I heard that it was like putting a name to the lake I swim in and me realizing that I am fish for the very first time in my life. This whole episode is so familiar to my being and what I'm walking through in life right now. Episode after episode the first question always blows my mind. Because how is it that so many of us are walking around not feeling "enough" yet never really talking about it. I loved this episode and we need part 2 of anything Liz wants to talk about 🙌🥰 thank you for overcoming ur struggles and persist on putting this amazing work out there. It's healing so many 🥰❤🙌

No better way to start the morning ❤️ I love Liz's strength and confidence, she's so inspiring. I was jotting down a few things in my journal when Jamey asked her the question about what she would say to her 9 year old self and she said "I would ask her what she needs" - I've literally drawn a sketch of my "inner child" and her emotions two days ago and one of the questions I "asked" her in my journal was "what does she need". I had chills all over my body when I went back a few seconds to hear Liz saying it again while simultaneously reading it in my notes 🥰 Thanks for this episode, it was so powerful (as always)!

I love so much about this episode! The kindness and respect and love that you three clearly have for each other and the atmosphere of real intimacy that are hallmarks of this whole endeavor really shine through. By following this conversation I feel that I have come to know and love you all, too, and having this opportunity for Liz to share so much of herself was such a privilege. The part about how hard meditation is, and the wanting to punch people for whom it seems to come easily, really resonated with me, too. What a struggle! Yet the insight from the spirit guide, "I have always been here, you just have to slow down and listen," surely gets at one of the most profound truths that cuts across all forms of religious belief and spiritual striving. Thank you, thank you, for what you're doing to help raise the level of discourse in our society!

This was such a good episode! I got emotional multiple times and learned/clarified things I hadn't known before.
    Two big insights:
    1. I haven't been letting myself feel safe in situations where I am, and I can give myself permission to change that
    2. The part about other people needing you to feel broken to make them feel like they're not was something that I sort of knew but hadn't heard articulated like that. It made me see some people in my life a little differently than I had before.
    Thanks for this!

As much as I respect anyone's capacity for Brilliance in the realm of Intellect..... It's only in witnessing authentic vulnerability, that I actually listen to what is being said. All due Love and Respect for the moments Liz showed and ever shows up in her Vulnerability. Power without Vulnerability is asymmetrical and disingenuous. Wow..... Liz is 100 percent how she talks to herself , myself also...... I hit all the boxes . My parents were present, married, happy but absent. Dad worked 24/7 , Mom was depressed deeply and there but miserable therefore making us miserable. I got critiqued if my bangs were out of place or eyeliner too thick, etc...... and now I'm as an adult undoing those voices . Also see the broken men as my type. I have to save them... I have to help them. Seeing now that I do not want someone broken. I'm whole. I want someone else who is whole too. THANK-YOU FOR THIS. You should have Shawn Mendes on again now after his breakup and healing. He was an amazing guest.

Awww, Ive been waiting for this podcast ever since you said Liz would have a show about her. I was very teary eyed seeing the appreciation, respect and love Justin and Jamey have for Liz, the love is palpable.
I certainly know the effects of childhood neglect, it can be so deceiving if your need for food and shelter were met, emotional neglect has a HUGE impact, and as Liz said, you end up with a personality that is only coping mechanisms. And it's so easy to be attracted to love bombing narcissists.

Fortunately, the man I love empowers me not taking my power, but boosting me up with positive stimulation all the time. I grew up a lot watching him grow. And I'm still growing . It's nice to see people are solving their internal issues more openly than before without any shame. Shame kills us , our personality and thought processes. Being shameless is good for health. People should accept themselves for who they are and with dignity. What you need is a good RO,and UV filtration process for the senses.

Resonating so hard with neglect being as damaging if not more than abuse. My parents had a messy divorce and used my older brother and I as ammo in the courts. We dealt with it differently, he became naughty and I became withdrawn. He got a lot of attention but me and my terrible coping mechanisms slipped under the radar and I eventually "learned" I deserved abandonment. It's taken me years to undo this.

This is my first time watching this podcast and I've got to say I'm very impressed, I tend to be hesitant with podcasts and especially ones that approach deep topics because they can feel super aggressive and it scares me off.
Listening to you guys talk calmly about these things made it so much easier to take in and apply to myself. I'm putting in a lot of work to deal with some pretty severe childhood trauma right now and Liz's words really resonated with me.
I also tend to fear men on podcasts a bit especially because of the other men I've seen do podcasts, you guys on the other hand really blew me away a bit. I'm not used to seeing such calm and respectful conversation and I'm grateful I got to see it. Definitely gained a new subscriber ☺️

Through my journey into becoming a feminist, it made me care about and see men more than I did. Liz is a great reminder of "for the love of men", because it's not just focusing on the harms of men and trying to get them to stop, but also loving men so they can heal, too. The mindset of "I love you, too" in regards to men is important to keep in mind.

30:32 for me, the problem isn't men feeling small in my presence, because there's moments where I am the bigger person, the one more knowledgeable or the one making better decisions. the problem starts when they feel small not because of my presence or skillset as a person, but based on the sole fact that I am a woman with that presence or skillset.

What a episode guys!! First, thank you Liz for sharing a bit part of your life. Seeing you answering some of the questions, i think it was a little painful for you and i really appreciate your honesty and courage. Thank you.
I feel connected with some of the things Liz said. For some reason, i also feel that some of the charasteristica that we link to masculinity (like hiding the emotions, one of my particular problems), i learnt to copy them when i was a child, i hated feeling treat like "a girl" or people saying to me that "this is what girls do", i hated princess and all this stuff. I dont have logical reasons to why i emulated mens, but it feels that part of my childhood consisted of trying to build my particular armor with some of the things that mens usually, in this weird culture, represents (stronger, secure...) to feel more secure or strong, i dont know.
The part when Liz talks about god also was sooo touching. I started to understand my relationship with god so late, maybe one or two years ago. Also when i was a child i felt that maybe god didnt want to talk with me, or i didnt understand how to talk with this divine power.
Finally, i want to that i love jamey (i always love him) but in this podcast, i loved the question about why Liz was qualified to talk about masculinity. What a brilliant question! i was like: jamey, i love you for asking this. The liz's answer was also a mic drop. What a strong badass incredible beautiful answer.
Thank you man enough team for sharing and creating this. Thank you for all of your work. You are beautiful people! Lots love!

Two song quotes came to mind: "I came in as bright as a neon light and I left burned out right there before him" (Lesson In Survival, Joni Mitchell) and, "I'm looking for a hard-headed woman" (Thank you Yusuf/Cat Stevens) Liz... how to simplify all the thoughts.. Thank you. I hope you can feel that happy joy I feel, we feel when you walk in the room. It is moving to hear your tender heart, and, see those beautiful eyes soften. Justin, Jamey and Liz, what a trio that is helping me so deeply moving through the winter of my life.

I never experienced the feeling of seeing myself reflected so closely like I did in this episode with Liz; you have a new follower. I feel like so many women have the same experience, and we are so conditioned to think that's how life is supposed to be, that we don't question it anymore. Being a single Mexican woman in my 30s, I understand and feel this podcast is very enlightening; you are doing an amazing job 👏 congratulations.

Before the first Rapid Fire question was asked, I asked myself that very question. What do I need? I suddenly started crying and wrote, to feel wanted and needed. Your answer also made me cry as well. It meant the same thing to me as well. No one ever asked me that question. Thank you for that. I needed to ask and answer that question. Liz, I really appreciate the “present,” honest, vulnerable, answers that you gave. And I love your expressed humor. I learned so much & through what & how you shared, I found questions to ask myself & ways I can be more responsible for my own emotions & relationships. Really helpful. And fascinating! You shared a spectrum of emotions. And I love how the exuberance of your young self comes out so much! We need that! Definitely one of my fav episodes. Liz, I also appreciate you bringing up non-binary & I think suggesting that gender doesn’t have to be an either/or…it’s all connected. “Bi-nary” can become another way to make us believe we’re separate when we are all connected & a part of each other. Liz, Jamie & Justin…incredible collaboration. I love the love! Thank you ☀️♥️

I am a woman of color listening all the way from France, and I never thought I’ll get hooked to a podcast called Man Enough. I am learning and reflecting on so much regarding myself, men, the society… I love watching you three have conversations with great guests, but this one with just the three of you I really enjoyed. Liz : I am in awe of you a little bit more each day. And I really appreciate the bond you guys have, it makes me think of my friendships with the men of my life that I am so grateful for.

Liz, I don't know if we come from the same "over-soul", but I can relate to your experience tenfold. And it's very rare for me to hear a woman's voice and be able to connect like this. The frequency that you beam is very authentic. Authenticity requires lots of work. Your guides protect you dearly.
I would love to know how you experience your intuition? For instance, when you meet someone and it turns out that their just "the pattern", does you intuition light up, and if it does where and how?
    🙏🏼

Just finished listening again and it's such a great episode. While I'm not a spiritual person at all, it was nice to see the three of them connecting on that, as I don't think Liz has mentioned her spiritual journey at all up until this point. It seems to have brought her levels of peace she was looking for.
It's also nice to see Liz with her guard down, since she's so often the one with the data or keeping the men honest. Just really great stuff.
On a separate note, I took the plunge on Factor with the ME promo code. I've struggled with binge eating disorder all my life and it's been the worst its ever been with getting sober and finally dealing with my mental health issues this last hear. I'm unclear on what it is about the Factor meals that are working so well, but I'm in week 2 and haven't binged once. I've tried other meal services and, while they were good, they were nowhere near as good & consistent as Factor. I've liked every single meal so far. Just thought I'd share for those that might be on the fence. (And it's a seriously big discount, too.)

I like Liz’s answer that to be man enough is to have emotional responsibility. However, I think some men have trouble with emotions not only because they are not taking responsibility for their emotions but because they have learned that their emotions don’t matter. My boyfriend has expressed to me that he believes no one cares about how men feel. This makes me very sad and I hope we can create a safe space for everyone to express themselves fully/freely

I rewatched and damn. If Liz and I aren't the same person lol ... so I wonder how much of this is true for others!?? How many other women try and fix the broken men or the unavailability status makes us think its8 temporary and we an change that. It's like that saying , when someone shows you them true colours, believe it . If someone says they're not ready to date or don't want anything serious, believe them. Don't try to change them. Go do you, love you first...which is hard.. "doing the work " f*cking sucks.. and it hurts.... but then you can heal.... after hurt, there's HEALING... and then , the right person I believe will happen, and be integrated with your life when meant to be. Love you all💜❤

I love spaces like this one where we can facilitate these conversations. That being said I had some reactions here. I thought there was a missed opportunity to acknowledge that neglect is on the spectrum of abuse. And even when making the distinction I felt it was unnecessary to validate the experience of neglect by saying it was "possibly even worse than abuse" which is not even true because a lot of times people are so habituated to the abuse they don't understand they're being abused. And yeah I would definitely say that neglect is a tool that abuse makes use of; it even feels to me like it constitutes a main aspect of it because even in actively abusing someone and giving them "attention" (another statement I had issues with- the idea that "at least being abused means you're getting attention" is something that is used against women of color and/or fat women to gaslight them about being raped for example. saying we should be happy we got any attention at all) that can make it even harder for the victim to identify it because the abuser will precisely use paying attention to them as a gaslighting opportunity. "what more do you want, I'm here aren't I?". But the point remains for me that I feel abuse and neglect aren't necessarily two distinct categories. Because you may be present, but by being "present" and being abusive, you're actually neglecting the person's wellbeing WHILE being present. If that makes sense.
Also I would say for Liz that even had her parents been perfect, society surely isn't and I think no parenting unit can make up for the abuse systems of oppression inundate all of us with. So there doesn't have to be "outright abuse" for especially a woman in a childhood. Because society will take care of it for sure. I'm someone who has been r*ped as a child and had cancer by the time I was 22. But even without that I see that living in this society is stressful as hell for anyone even without obviously traumatizing "events" like mine.
(Plus, neurotypes play into this too...as an autistic person for example for me all stimuli are multiplied).
I’d also definitely like to see more multiply marginalized people here, especially in a consistent position. If we’re addressing systems of oppression it only makes sense to give us a voice when we’re most affected by it (which is like Liz says the reason why we’re so intimately familiar with those systems.), especially since we and by extension our knowledge are already being erased from those discussions a lot. I’d love to see more fat, Black&disabled women for example. I see there have been some guests but again considering the topic it makes sense (it could be especially enlightening to discuss some Black feminist texts. The Black feminist tradition has taught me a lot. I’d be happy to recommend books/authors etc if that’s useful to you at all at this stage)
That being said again I appreciate these spaces more than anything else. And I see it’s a work of progress and I’m pleased to see there seems to be an awareness and grace about that here.
