    I am from Germany and let me tell you we do not use shortening but margarine or butter. Why don't you use a spring form? Sure is an interesting recipe and the end result looks good. But how many oz. or gramm is the butter. Not every country had butter sticks with the measurements on the wrapping. Very nice video, thank you!

      Hi Connie, this is my sister-in-law's recipe. I wanted to stick to it exactly the way she did it. She grew up in Germany and still living there. It's 169 grams of butter. Thank you for your kind words! Here is the link to the recipe. www.paulaq.com/apple_or_apfel_cakegermanappleapfelcake.html

    Usually butter and sugar gets bitten together until white and fluffy on very high speed and only then you add eggs one by one. Then siffted flour and baking powder added to wet ingredients. I am sure it is still a delishious cake, enjoy !☺

      @@GuamMamaCooks You know what, this cake is terrific. I made it today with my daughter and we both loved it. The pecans worked out great. I love the mix of apples and nuts (which toasted beautifully as during baking). My daughter hates nuts in cake, but something magical happens when you combine the nuts and apples.This one is a keeper :) We added more sugar and vanilla as a personal preference. I can’t believe this was originally posted years ago lol.

      It rises a little bit due to the teaspoon of baking powder. It's a little dense and a little heavy, but it's deliciously different cake compared to the norm. It's reminiscent of pastries in a German bakery.

    I’ve made this a couple of times. You gotta add lots of apples or it will be very dry. I also added 1/4 c. more butter.

    You should show us how it looks inside....I mean.... to cut a slice....so we can see it....

      Yes, thank you! Now I know how important that slice is. :-)

    The order in which ingredients are added just, intuitively, feels messy and courting difficulty. Also, the amount of Crisco for coating the pan -- damn!

      It is different, however I've made this recipe the traditional way....and it's just not as good.

    I use wax paper to spread the crisco on the pan.

    Help! Can I use granny smith apples? I have a bag full of them! If I do, should I use more sugar?

    • @GuamMamaCooks
      @GuamMamaCooks  11 лет назад

      Sorry for the late reply! I'm still getting used to this new Google+ system. I suppose you can try this with granny smiths. It will be more tart....I would only add about 3 to 4 more tablespoons more sugar though.

    Did you drain the apples? From that bowl of ice water?

    You think I could just melt the butter and add it to the eggs and sugar instead of mixing it in

    • @GuamMamaCooks
      @GuamMamaCooks  4 года назад +1

      Hi Geneve, I would try the original method that way it turns out the way it should. Using melted butter tends to change the end result. After you've made it once go ahead and try melted butter...then you can compare which you prefer.

    I tried this recipe yesterday. I did mix a cinnamon mixture for apples because I was not sure how tart it would be. It was delicious. I found it not light as cakes that I usually make yet not hard but of a heavier texture. Is this the way it is supposed to come out, more on the heavy side? I also found that it was crispier when taken out of the oven than the next day. Is this how it is supposed to be? I bought walnut pieces. I am not sure if the pieces should be small. I chopped them a bit. Thanks.

    Most people use salted butter anyway, cinnamon is very over used in the USA, it kills the palate tastebuds. I was French trained, they rarely use cinn.

      jonesgerard You can never “over use” cinnamon in a recipe with apples! It’s hilarious that you think being French trained somehow makes you an authority on cooking! Not so at all !

      jonesgerard its a German recipe 😊 Just for info purposes - that which cinnamon kills, is Candida! 😊😊 Desperately needed with all the sugar ingestion, Stateside;);) ...if it’s actually real cinnamon, that is. Mostly it’s a substitute
