We all love a simple recipe that yields incredible results. This is it! A French apple cake that can be prepared in under 20 minutes and ready under 60 minutes. It's slightly buttery with a crumbly outside texture, and it's incredibly moist throughout. Try and stop at one slice I dare you!

Oh my goodness! This recipe is amazing! For someone like me who struggles with baking, this recipe worked great and it’s really forgiving! Joel, I just made your wonderful apple cake! I was a bit nervous since it has so much oil and butter. And I did everything within my American willpower not to add cinnamon/nutmeg, etc. But I did add some drops of vanilla, almond and rum flavoring. This is a beautiful cake, for sure. For those reading this, do not cut your apples into slices. You want the chunks! I used 3 apples: two Honeycrisp and one Golden Delicious for a weight of 13 oz or about 3.5-4 cups chunked apples. The lemon topping is wonderful. The only thing I will do different next time ... when I re-flip it, I will keep it on a cooling rack before transferring to the serving plate. Thanks, Joel! I can't wait to bring leftovers to work.
This is such an amazing recipe. I’ve made it like four times and it’s perfect every time. I add a couple of teaspoons of cinnamon to the dry ingredients because we’re a big cinnamon family. Otherwise, I follow your recipe to the letter. Cheers and thank you.

Just made this Apple Cake and must say it’s delicious 😋 The first bake (170c) did take longer than 30 minutes for me. The hint of the lemon zest is fantastic - it doesn’t need the cinnamon (either or in my opinion). Thank you for sharing 🙏
Just tried this recipe, it is idiot proof. I know this because I idiotically forgot to add the apples before putting them in the oven. Half way through, I realised my error and it still turned out GREAT! THANK YOU!!

I have also made a gluten free version simply by replacing the plain flour with gluten free, and again it comes out perfect!!

I made this tonight and it needed abit more baking time than 30 minutes for the first stage, but my oh my, it is profoundly delicious! so moist and light and amazing. It's a keeper. And I agree with another comment that cinnamon would be a lovely addition, but its fine without too.

Thank you chef, I tried and was a hit. I added some walnuts as mentioned in one of the comments and that kicked it up a notch. The only two comments I’d add, cook on 350 and put plenty of butter before you pour the batter so to avoid sticking problems when flipping the cake. Thank you again, keep’em coming 😊

I just finished making this cake and couldn't resist taking a bite. It turned out to be delicious 😋 the cake though took me 50+ mins to bake. I guess that may be because my baking pan was smaller in width, so don't worry if it is taking time, centre of cake should be completely cooked.
When the frosting was baking I thought its gonna make an omelette on top of my cake 😅 but the frosting is the best part of it.
A little more (actually lot 😋) on sweet part.

I made Two of these today and they were delicious. I added chopped walnuts and cinnamon. Great with ice cream or cream, not to sweet either. Grease the pans well and maybe line with baking paper. I was going to make a Russian Sharlota cake but too many eggs, no butter or oil and reviews weren’t great. I’m glad I choose this one . Thank you for sharing. xx

I have made this for 30 years, When i make the pour over sauce i use cream instead of butter
then cook for ten minutes in a pot to make a light fudge sauce, then pour over and back in to the oven for another 10 minutes. Divine

I made it today by scaling it up. I used only 220grms of caster sugar.(still enough) Cut apples into wedges n put them in lemon water for 1O minutes. Took them out mixed with cinnamon powder before arranging. Used one egg, 6 tblspoons of melted butter, 100 grms sugar for the frosting. Forgot the lime zest. Needed a bigger pan next time. Dust the pan with melted butter/flour( always) before pouring in the cake batter. Once baked run a knife all the sides(while hot) leave it in the pan for 15 minutes before flipping. No sticking. Lovely recipe. Thank you. (Used sunflower oil)

I have made this recipe several times and the baking time extends up to 50 min plus the other 12; might be the oven or region I live at...but it sure is delicious and conquers everyone who tries it...not complicated at all...thank you! ❤

It was our daughters’ 19th birthday yesterday (legal drinking age in Canada!) and since we’re still in lockdown we made this cake instead of going out to get one. It was simply delicious and they (we) loved it. Thanks so much for posting all these amazing recipes.

I scaled this up and mine is being baked. About to over flow with the custard being added. Seems like it is requiring over 60 minutes baking time. Next time I need to adjust the recipe for the pan. Cut up apples I put in lime water then drained sprinkle cinnamon before arranging on top of the cake.. Smelling heavenly. 🧡🌷

It's 2am and I'm on a diet watching this...😭😭😭❤❤❤ This looks so goooooood.
You can play around wigh it substituting for healthy stuff. I do it All The Time and my cakes turn out 😀👍🏻. Just don't do whole wheat unless there's spice to enhance bitterness. For sugar go with honey.. for oils go for monosaturated oils like almond oil it's neutral.. for butter go with ghee it's easy on cholesterol (HDL eats LDL away with ghee but don't eat too much of it.
What else do I do?? Oh, always try a recipes starting off with a small scale. Just divide things to quarters. Darling ifyoudothis youwon't face deprivation. Dieting is bad.. canging lifestyles is wgat rocks. Educate yourself to a better health. I am losing gradually following this but I tell you.. I been following black fast all day till the sun says goodnight. 😁

I tried this recipe today
The cake had a metallic aftertaste probably from too much baking powder
I had to bake it 20min longer to get the same browning as the cake in the video
The 'frosting' was very eggy even though I added extra lemon zest and vanilla extract
Overall it wasn't inedible slightly dry and metallic tasting

*heebee potter:* Apples always need some kind of spice, such as cinnamon, nutmeg or cloves (or a blend of those spices: 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg, 1/8 tsp. cloves), otherwise they're bland and you will get that strange metallic taste. I also wouldn't bother putting the egg mixture on top, because, as you said, it tastes very "eggy".
@@janishart5128 How and when exactly you should add the cinnamon ?
*CM MATS:* I always add the cinnamon to the apples right after I've mixed in the lemon juice (or vinegar) and sugar. Then I add the butter and the thickener (flour, potato starch or cornstarch) and mix that all up, and then add it to the pie shell (or whatever you're adding the apples to).
That's a first I've heard. Something must be wrong in your process. Be happy to try to help. 😀
Mine turned out extremely bitter around the edges where it is cooked more. I think it should be 3/4 tsp. not 3.

In my opinion, the suggestion from others to add cinnamon , walnuts & etc. is not at all necessary and would render it the A-typical, predictable recipe which I personally avoid. This is a classic French version and could best be enjoyed as such! Be safe & well all! Request; Any recipes you can share which spares us from having to tap our limited supplies of eggs & butter would be most welcomed & appreciated!

The apples are still crunchy after cooking. You might want to carmelize them for a few minutes before putting on the batter . Also my cake took much longer than 30 minutes. Very delicious cake.

Similar to many comments, mine did not bake in 30min. Took more like 50 min plus after adding the frosting, it came out undone in 12min, and definitely needed a lot more time. Requesting you to add disclaimer in recipe about type of oven (convection or not) and how long to bake for
