I GOT IT The riser for the IR laser would actually be better suited for a mounted, wait for it, RANGEFINDER. It's closer to your optic and sits above the height your IR laser would reach. This puts the mounted rangefinder higher to your optic, giving you a more accurate read to where your optic is pointing at and stays high enough that you could mount your IR laser so that it's still closer to your barrel placement to keep it where you're pointing accurate. OR It's so you can have your IR laser higher for when you're shooting further downrange with a rifle without higher-powered optics, so that your IR laser can be closer to zero with +300m ranged targets & beyond. *Pops Busch Light* That'll be $399 plus shipping & handling.
I remember being told in basic training that the AK had 'looser' tolerances than the AR did. This enables the AK to function when full of mud and stuff.Whatever.I own an AR and was pleasantly surprised to see it pass the mud test.Shocked even.
It sounds like Myth and Exaggeration was taken seriously, also I feel like it will have the opposite effect if it was “looser”. We don’t use loosely built houses to keep out high winds and dirt.
@@Predator20357 AK doesn't keep things out, the looser clearances (not tolerances) mean that anything that gets into an AK can fall out again rather than jamming up the gun. An AR takes the approach of tighter clearances to try and stop anything getting in to begin with.
Most AR/M16 issues I ever saw were magazine related. Others were one non staked gas key and dozens of stupid people issues (barrels do not make great pry bars).
Every issue I ever had with an M4 was: (1) Magazine that should've been removed from service (99% of the time) (2) Utter disregard for maintenance or straight up abuse.
@@M81_WOODLAND I had a magazine that looked perfect when I was in Germany, I don't remember the manufacturer. Running about in the Graff resort area, it failed to feed every single round - granted they were blanks but the feed lips held the round too low for the bolt to pick up. later I found out it was a manufacturer that the Army had actually issued a recall on since all slipped past the inspectors out of spec.

In regards to the weird looking optic and laser mount, here is the idea: It's designed for a dedicated night vision short barreled rifle. On shorter rifles with shorter hand guards this mount allows the shooter to grip the rifle a little further out where the laser would normally take up real estate. The height of the optic is for passive aiming with NVGs on your head. It looks dumb, and it's a very limited use item, but the idea behind it is well thought out and practical.
I came here to say this. Glad I'm not the only one that immediately thought of its use with like, lets say, the 5" barreled mcx with a white light on your weak side, therefore taking up the only realistic real-estate for the IR laser
@@slappomatthew I agree with you completely, but it might prove useful for people putting a white light on their weak side, or for the few that want a gun in their backpack and want the sides of the gun as clean as possible to help with removing the gun from the bag with as little snagging points as possible. I don't know. even if its totally useless, I enjoy the fact that there are people out there putting out products to add as many options as possible when it comes to utilizing your gear in whatever way works for the individual
Ive been watching RUclips since day one, I haven't subscribed to anyone in all those years and have never been called out by name for not subscribing. Freaked me TF out Brandon!
That dot riser with the IR laser mount in front is for use with night vision. It’ll work. You want your IR laser to have a good zero, which is hard to do on some rails that won’t hold a absolute zero.
1963 USMC cold weather training, North Camp Fuji, M14 full of watery mud churned up by M48 Tanks. M14 fired every time, threw mud into my eyes every time, but it fired every time. I sort of wished it had not. My belief is that if enough mud is packed in, then it will need to be removed. I loved my M14 except when we had to climb mountains while carrying it.
I always recommend reading the Aberdeen AK trials. There they mentioned that the AK does well in extreme conditions, with the exception of mud, for all the reasons everyone says. All the tests I've seen on youtube of AK's failing ultimately involved someone shoving crap into the open dust port.
10:23 as a treky, I really appreciate this joke. Lets go Brandon! (well you're awesome, plus, you know...the thing). Love your vids Brandon, they make my day.
Im not going to lie the ak50shotgun video was actually pretty wild im sorry about the gun blowing up but im happy to know everyone is okay after that happened. Your super awesome Brandon.
The frozen ar doesn't surprise me. When I bought may ar pistol, I did a clean and lubrication before firing it for the first time. When i did it was -10F it froze up almost immediately. I had to manually operate the bolt to get it to feed. After one 30rd mag, it finally cycled for 3rds. I did get it to run, but it took quite a while. My M4 carbine that i have had for years oddly enough had no problem running. Same time cleaned and lubed. It in amazing what a bit of wear will do.
You want to stop that? living in northwestern South Dakota I leave all our coyote ar's in our wheeler's year-round and it gets really cold here. I lube them with dex 6 automatic tranny fluid, 2 reasons one it doesn't freeze up until around -60f, and all the detergents in it also helps keep them a little cleaner. Also my ar's are not the cheapest of cheap crap meaning there not filled with mystery parts. I change out some parts for what i think are better manufactured name brand parts. I don't know if that helps but it makes me feel better and all of them run every time in the cold winter here. Oh yea and our wheelers here don't have cabs or tops.
Yep, just need to chug through those stacked tolerance and put a few magazine fed deburring cycles through it. The cold weather transmission fluid is a pretty novel idea, too. Seems like boots, guns, gloves, and jeans all become more comfortable with some wear... I suppose you could say something about guitars, trucks, and women, too...
At least we can all agree the M14 is still a POS. I love the wood and the way it looks but it's really a poor choice for a combat rifle for just about every reason compared to an AK or AR.
M14 isn’t that bad when it’s not yours -me, who only shot it once at a range. (Fun Fact: the m14 I shot had a bullet hole in the birdcage flash hider where I like to think a squirrely bullet clipped it after exiting the barrel)
There going to be hate for all guns at some point. I’ll put a round through you at 1200 yards with my m1a. Now it’s not the gun I’d grab if shtf but it’s not one I’d want to be fighting against. And I’m sorry bigger bullets are better 🤷♂️
That riser is actually pretty awesome. It's made to shoot with night vision so you can have a solid chin weld and keep the tubes out of the way. And it keeps a steady lockup between your optic and the IR laser. It also looks to have viewing holes under the optics and peq where you could possibly use irons if need be.
As for the ice test.. I'm in Alaska. We have more trouble with ammunition failing to fire at -30deg f than we have with the weapon. Actions get gummy if they are lubed at those temps too. Best to have an unlubricated weapon.
10:50 some people like to keep the iron sights usable. everything was lifted. with an opening so that you can see. just in case it gets damaged or the batteries are dead.
In this case it would propably still be a better solution if you use irons which can rised a bit higher (like flip ups) instead of lifting literally everything else.
“Why would I bother getting health insurance when I could spend the time building things that make me need health insurance” Greatest quote ever.. I’m 36 and feel the same way, but I just had my first child. So I did get a million dollar life insurance policy. Just don’t tell my wife.
Best I can tell the riser is for keeping your ir/visible zeroed and having the optic raised for passive aiming under nv's. So it's for shooting laser assisted and passive under nod's.
Interesting halo fact for those who where wondering. The MA5B individual combat system (assault rifle) is a gas operated, rotating bolt, bullpup fully automatic rifle cambered in 7.62. At a impressive 900 rounds per minute fire rate (15 per second) the assault rifle white literally tears the enemy apart, this why it is so effective against even the strongest of aliens at close range.
One thing I definitely learned in the Army, if you do proper maintenance, your equipment works, properly. Real military equipment (not tacticool stuff) is built with abuse in mind. It takes the abuse well, if you do the proper maintenance.
The star trek optic riser looking thing is from GBRS Group and what its intended purpose is is to free up rail space that IR devices take up. This is especially useful on small PDW platforms or real short .300 BO or even something like the 416C. This allows the users hands to have optimal placement. Often times you’ll see professionals running the IR device way back and control hand forward. This allows for better recoil management but in-turn the user risks blocking the emissions of the IR device. Now this won’t be an issue that the IR device is elevated.
I'm out here watching these AR/AK torture tests and I am wondering "Where is some other exotic guns like the Famas?". Then I realized that the Famas is worth more than everything I own. It would be nice to see a little bit of diversity though, instead of the low hanging fruits.
As someone who loves the M14 and lives close to where it was manufactured, the freeze and mud test hurts me on spiritual level. Also that name callout spooked me.
That riser actually makes sense. Super high for head-up and passive aiming but has the raised peq mount to keep the rifle balanced by not mounting the peq at the very front. And it’s raised so that you can still get your hand on the rifle without blocking the peq. Also looks like if you flip it around you can use it like a KAC skyscraper and run a magnifier on the raised pic section.
Cold is one thing, drenching your gun with water in the cold is another. Who would do that in the first place anyway? If you’ve ever taken a gun camping in winter, you know not to bring them in your warm tent with you to avoid condensation building up on them which turns into ice. You bring an AR in the cold, and keep it cold and relatively dry and it’ll run fine. You’re far more likely to fall in mud or get your gun muddy then you are to fall in a river in the winter, so personally I’d be more concerned with mud/dirt performance than Arctic performance, (then again I don’t live in Siberia)
Y'know, that peq/red dot riser actually makes some sense. Having the peq mounted on the reciever instead of the rail is the damndest way to make sure you dont lose zero (it's even better for if you don't have a rail, or have that semi tarded rail the wwsd has). Though, the height is definitely a bit much
Personally I love the M14/M1A BUT I also acknowledge the shortcomings of the design and I also acknowledge that there's better rifles out there. (I own a M1A due to nostalgia of competing with them many moons ago) I have much better rifles than that but it is a fun range rifle. For those that think they are all that and are upset how the test turned out, why are you surprised? Seriously? That's about as exposed as a system can get. Nah, if it came down to it I'll stick with my AR's.
I think it's just an awkward middle child that was almost predestined to be a limited use DMR for special forces and the like. Poor baby never stood a chance.
Knowing all the results so far, how do you think the Direct gas impingement AK from TINC in Slovenia would fare? Based on guntube so far that means it has the mud self cleaning of ARs, with the unfreezable hammer and firing pin of AKs, could absolutely demolish both tests if so.
Wrong on multiple levels. For starters the ar15 uses an internal piston in the carrier, (i.e. the bolt itself) its not "direct impingement". Because of this the gas bleeds out from vent holes in the side of the bolt carrier which have some advantage in blowing away the mud. The tinck uses an *actual* direct impingement similar to the mas-49 which offers no such advantage. Secondly the mud issue with the AK is caused by having ingress points into the receiver, it has nothing to do with the gas system. The hk 416 has a gas piston system and performed just as well as the normal ar15s. That was because the mud never got into the receiver not because of the gas system.
Haha, I love Brandon's description of the fudlore. I really wasn't surprised or upset by how the ARs and AKs performed. For my own curiosity sake though, I wish Garand Thumb would add the Robinson Arms XCR-L to the list of rifles he tests, I would be very curious to see how it holds up since it is a mixture of both the AR and AK platform.
Thanks for watching guys! Let me know what you thought of the mud test down in the comments! Also, stay tuned for some uh…unique range videos this month 😈

This puts the mounted rangefinder higher to your optic, giving you a more accurate read to where your optic is pointing at and stays high enough that you could mount your IR laser so that it's still closer to your barrel placement to keep it where you're pointing accurate.
OR
It's so you can have your IR laser higher for when you're shooting further downrange with a rifle without higher-powered optics, so that your IR laser can be closer to zero with +300m ranged targets & beyond.

It looks dumb, and it's a very limited use item, but the idea behind it is well thought out and practical.
i get it, but putting the laser on the weak side of the handguard seems like a better Idea IMO but what do I know.
Risers for the win but still dunno why they would rise the peq also. Maybe there are some little tricks in nvg community that I have no clue of.
Or it falling in there like in the inrange tests. Definitely a con of an open design

You M4 is "worn in" and has loose tolerance where it counts.
Yep, just need to chug through those stacked tolerance and put a few magazine fed deburring cycles through it. The cold weather transmission fluid is a pretty novel idea, too.
Seems like boots, guns, gloves, and jeans all become more comfortable with some wear...

In terms of just a gun, the m14s good. In terms of a military gun, less so
The high rise pic rail is for use with a scope. Meant to be used for a distance finder or the like.

Brandons flinch when his muddy AK didn’t fire 😂
Haven’t felt that much pain since Ian McCollum dunked a Lago Alien in mud…

That riser actually makes sense. Super high for head-up and passive aiming but has the raised peq mount to keep the rifle balanced by not mounting the peq at the very front. And it’s raised so that you can still get your hand on the rifle without blocking the peq. Also looks like if you flip it around you can use it like a KAC skyscraper and run a magnifier on the raised pic section.
this would actually also make sense if you plan on shooting with a gasmask on.
Okay, but how would you use the peq? Just a long pressure switch?
@@ethanlorton8568 not even that long, it could just sit under it
You can easily avoid muds.
Soldiers are trained in moving around in muds without getting into their gun.
But you can't keep the cold out of your gun
Though, the height is definitely a bit much
The peq is raised so your hand doesn't block it while utilizing the Grip Clamp C
I just wanna know more about it but can’t find it 🤣
Pretty sure the riser is for shooting with nods. Would also make sense with the IR laser/illuminator

13:22 that meme aged into a fine wine, left to turn into vinegar.
My question is that which weapon is easier to clean if mud gets into the system.
@@rodiculous9464 it doesn't have a piston in the bolt carrier, the bolt is what acts like a piston, but either way it still isn't piston operated
