i see some drummers very much so over complicate this process. I think you summed up the essentials perfectly. Nice video!

Just got some drum sticks today for my birthday. Jamming out to kiss with books around me and doing the drum sticks like the drummer does. I'm not half bad, only 13.

I don't want to play one-upsman guys, but I'm 71 and saw the coolest electric drumkit when one of my grand kids got one at Christmas. I bought one too and it arrives tomorrow. I've always wanted to be a drummer. Then I start lessons.
This was a very helpful video, Clair. Thanks!

I've been playing drums for four years and got to a pretty decent level of playing, but now realizing I've been holding the sticks wrong this whole time and it has created barriers within my playing, I'm going to start practicing the right way, but I just feel ashamed and it makes me so angry. Thanks for the video :)

Wow! Thank you so much, I have not felt comfortable with learning how to hold the sticks and no other videos have spoken about thumb placement like you did, my pad work just improved out of sight, great detail mate.

This is great! I have been playing a long time and I'm self taught so no one ever showed me how to properly hold a stick. I've since been relearning playing while holding the stick properly like you've shown here. But the one thing I struggle with is holding the stick in the proper configuration while going around the kit, doing fills, etc. Do you have any advice for this? I never see anyone online or else where really talking about holding the sticks while going around the kit.

Almost...back of your hands should be flat. Your thumb, pointer and middle finger are your fulcrum. When you set up your kit set up the throne, bass & snare first. Upper arms should be vertical. Forearms at a slight downward angle over the snare. Sit up straight & keep your legs at 90 degree angles. Also learned to play heel down, though initially difficult but easier once you develope the muscles, does wonders for technique Been playing off & on over the course of 30 years. Learned the technically correct way from day 1 from a professonal & it's saved my body ALOT of grief.

When I play the drums with the traditional grip I have my left and right hand the opposite of how it’s originally supposed to be played, is it ok to continue playing like that because to me it feels comfortable

Claire Brock would u mind to remake this video slower (or can u recommend me to another vid-tutorial)? Wanna see ur fingers and hand movement(practically). Almost give up to learn single-double stroke consistently (on tempo). Ty very2 much. (Sorry 4 my grammar)

In "settings" you can slow the video down, maybe that would help. Not sure it works in every browser...

Hello there. Thank you for video. I am actually beginner, starting to play with holding technique like you've showed here. I've been practicing individually with my mentor (he's been playing for 40 years, jazz etc.) and he tries to push me to hold stick not with first finger but rather with middle one/second one. He says, the first is to be in the front and checking the position. Afterwards I play without rythm and I can't keep fingers (small ones) on the stick somehow, it's losing a grip all the time, therefore it's loose and I make tensions consequently if I want to hold it harder. What do you recommend? To use wax? Ty.

    • @BrocksterDrums
      @BrocksterDrums  8 лет назад +5

Hi, that's great you're starting to play drums. It's ok to use the middle finger instead of the first finger, plenty of drummers do that. Keeping tension loose and not holding the stick too tight is important. It's difficult to say without seeing you play, but perhaps you need to pinch a little more with your thumb to hold the stick in position and stop losing grip, but always making sure your hands stay relaxed. Hope this helps and don't worry too much, these things come with practice.

Hello Claire, thank you for reply. I'm practicing like crazy "single" beats - for warming up. Despite it can be really boring sometimes, it's essential. I'm getting better grip lately somehow. Like you said: It's about practice. Take care and enjoy your drumming! :)

Thanks for this. I posted this on a random steven clark "how to hold your stick" clip that was fed to me on the right. You might get a laugh out of it.
22 minutes on a tutorial as to how you hold your sticks. Are you for real? I mean free info is free info and thank you but 22 min of waffling on to go well beyond that sweet google ad money spot is a bit much. You could have done this at 10 min and still hit the google ad money spot. Ads. which most peple ave blocked by the way. EDIT...same page as this on the right...1.5 min and i am sure they do the trick as well ruclips.net/video/EePm3QsqnOM/видео.html. Skipped a bit of the start and moved to where she is about to use her hands. Used 5 seconds so far, hit play and within about 20 seconds i can tells she knows her stuff...so in about 45 seconds of that clip she will tell you how to do so you dotn waste 20 min of your life.
I dont know this person at all and it was a random google suggestion so i am not shillign for them. I knew right away after seeing a small section on how to hold the sticks that she knew her stuff.. Turns out she does. Below is her bio.
Claire is a freelance drummer and percussionist who recently relocated to Cornwall having spent many years based in London, UK. She has performed across the UK and Europe at venues and events including the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Opera House, BBC Big Weekend Festival and the Rugby World Cup. She has a degree in Music from the University of East Anglia and also studied at Drumtech where she gained the Top Student award in 2002/3.
She’s toured and recorded with numerous artists including: Robyn (Island Records), Ex-’Sneaker Pimp’ Kelli Ali (One Little Independent Records) and American Blues guitarist Carvin Jones.
As well as lots of freelance work (both kit and orchestral) Claire is a member of the indie/lounge trio Dead Sea Navigators.
There. In less than a min you will get the same info thsi guy tries to sell you in 20 min. Dont waste you time on people that have no respct for your own time.
Shame you dont do clip shere anymore and you are too far from me even by bike and i live near cornwall.
