What we should’ve done before insulating our steel building/garage…

  • If you have a steel sided building like ours and don’t have this rat/mouse guard, chances are you have quite the rodent problem!
Our local Amish who we purchased all our steel from bent us up some nice rat guard trim for our steel building.
We are spending quite a bit of money on insulating our garage and without this our chances of mice and other rodents are greatly increased!
Here’s a link to our other channel if you enjoy old cars and hanging out in the garage and wrenching on old projects.

Job well done, young man... especially when you have an incredible assistant like Ms. Hailey!! I believe she deserves two thumbs up (and maybe a couple dollars extra come payday)! Looks like the firewood side may have to wait till spring...or not. Wishing you and your lovely wife and beautiful young ladies a Happy Holiday season. Take care, be safe and God bless!

Keep your children safe, it only takes a second for some monster to find a kindness to expllot, trust your gut. If it’s telling you something is wrong listen, do not override that! You never want to feel the greatest loss a parent can know. Its a particular hell if disappear, I’ve seen both sides of family slain, all of them. Only half was worthy of life. Pacifism is a weakness. Good information on R board. Biochemist MD-PhD indeed safety first! Germany was right, always. The day will come you’ll know or be extraordinarily blessed.

Love the music @ the beginning! As a master electrician, I feel obliged to strongly caution you against the use of the "suicide cord" shown being plugged in at 1:17. The blades of the male plug are live whenever the cord is attached to the running generator and the circuit breaker is on. A much safer installation would be to use a male flanged inlet on the building and a matching female twist-lock receptacle on the end of your cord.

Thanks for that warning, That makes perfect sense. If I am ever around a generator like this and that cord type is around will know to warn others about this. Don't touch those tabs. Best to not have them there in the first place.

But please get rid of that cord you’re using on your generator that you plug into the garage that’s dangerous as hell 16:12

  • @declaneric

So the rat guard is a nice little project with long term benefits. It wasn't necessary before you insulated the inside, because there was no cavity to nest in (probably why the original owners never bothered with it). So at least you recognized that creating a cavity for rats to get into means you have to now address the rats.
But what I like most about your videos is that you don't dumb anything down for your kids. You treat them as intelligent individuals, and it seems to make them willing to learn how to do things, which means you have educated and knowledgeable help for your projects. They're still kids, but they grasp the idea that a lot of stuff needs all hands on deck, and they seem willing to jump in. That's a great work ethic to instill, and that's been lost a bit, in the last generation or two. Two thumbs up, sir. 👍👍

Rat guard is a great starter strip for installing your panels. Make sure it is installed level and all you have to do is slide the top into the j channel and put the bottom of side panel on rat guard. It elimenates having to line all the bottoms up and holding in place while screwing panel. Makes life a lot easier.

I recommend a pebble style rocket mass heater. They are easier to build and modify later than other rocket mass heaters. RMH will drastically reduce your wood usage by ~70% you'll be spending less time loading the stove. The wood will heat the mass and then the mass will radiate heat for many hours after the fire.

I never cared much for cats myself, but my little Lhasa/Yorkie was the best mouse catcher you ever seen! Was also great at catching moles or voles too. She had the patience of a Saint! She sit next to mole/voles mounds forever till one would come close to the top of the dirt mound and she pounce ripping the critter right out of the dirt. She was always proud of her catch and she bring it inside the house still very much alive and have to show it to me even in the middle of the night. Fortunately I could tell her to take it back outside and kill it now. You done a good job! I find it dead at the front door in the morning. When I cut my field she followed in front of my mower waiting for a field mouse to come running out and she nab it every time too. She was a terrific hunter! Anything she thought might’ve too big for her to kill, she come in the house and let me know she had a critter she needed my help with. If it had moved she sniffed it out till she found it! Sometimes we walked the whole perimeter of our 5 acres making sure she was happy the critters were gone off the property. She never ceased to amaze me

i am doing a similar project we put up an all metal building have wired it and am insulating it myself about ready to start putting wall board up , you might use spray foam to seal the wall from the inside on the wall with the fire wood until you use up the fire wood

Hey buddy I just ran across your channel because you had something in the description about insulating a pole barn!! I just built a 60’x80’x16’ pole barn and I’m trying to deside on witch way I’m wanting to insulate mine!! But I had seen your awesome Chevy pickup and the Chevy jacket that you was wearing!! The only thing I could think was he was the man to be watching for sure!!! Awesome video buddy and remember keep up all the hard work buddy!!! Oh and awesome work to your little girl I’m definitely glad to see that she isn’t sitting inside playing video games!! Lol!!

Well dad, perhaps you should move your safety glasses from on top of the bill of your hat to below the bill. Makes the safety argument a little more believable for the young-uns :)

On the side with all the firewood, you could stuff the voids with steel wool or Brillo pad as a temporary solution until you can install the rat guard.

      @9252LIFE  Год назад

We just put some pest control closed cell foam
In the larger voids and left the smaller ones open which shouldn’t be a problem.

We have a 24x48 metal building that is garage/shop/apartment. Rodents were a problem for a while. We had the bug guy (pest control) come and set traps. When he was there he told us to leave lights on since the rodents don’t like the light. I have heard RVers leave a light in their engine compartments in certain parts. We left the hoods up in the garage with a shop light over each engine and they quit tracking eventually. All the best!

Whoever built our metal building, I know it was done by a contractor though! Regardless they didn’t put that metal flange you installed on you’re building. Obviously there’s No keeping the mice out as it is now. Guess I’ll be looking for some of that metal clanging in the future! Just goes to show just cause someone supposed to be a professional. Doesn’t mean their doing everything the right way or taking short cuts to save money for themselves!
