David: I truly enjoy your videos. After 63 years of marriage, my wife lost her lengthy and courageous fight against cancer. I have decided to pursue a solo camping tour of the United States in my Tesla model Y. Although 86 yrs. old, I have no real camping experience and have found your videos both informative and inspirational. I am an ardent cyclist and intend to take my power assisted , recumbent trike with me. I assume that camp grounds stating “no tents” are unavailable to me. However, when making reservations at camp grounds without that notification, how should I identify myself when making reservations (car camper, tent, SRV, RV)? Thank you in advance for any advice, suggestions or guidance you can provide
I'm sorry to hear about your wife ☹️ I haven't seen any campgrounds stating "no tents", but typically all campgrounds are good. Just select tent spot with parking (you wouldn't want a walk up tent spot.) I sometimes put a few things outside like a small fold up table and chair, or occasionally my shower tent, but otherwise I've never even had anyone say anything. The only place you can't generally park is at an RV park as they don't allow car camping and require a trailer or large RV. I wish you the best on your adventures 😀
Thanks David. I will continue to watch and enjoy your travels. If you are ever heading toward north Texas, perhaps we can get together. Thanks again and have a great weekend.
Not sure if you were replying to another viewer as my name is Bryan, but I tend to get to Texas at least once a year so will keep you posted 😀 Thanks so much for watching my videos and glad I could be of some inspiration for your upcoming travels.
Been watching your vids since the keyed car incident, you handled that correctly with class, Im in japan, the wife, dog and i camp in an inflatable tent, your vis helped alot, thank you, hope you find your way out here
Great video! Thanks! As far as the reduction of efficiency due to the cargo box, I read some reviews were discussing about placement of the box. Some people found that by reposition and turn the cargo box from front to back may actually decrease the air draft to the vehicle, which may also improve the efficiency. I'm not sure how much of improvement gain but there were other youtubers trying to prove that as well.
Thanks for the info! Yep, I've seen that too. I reached out to some manufacturers and they said they would not recommend turning it around. When asked why, I never got a response. I have no idea why none of them want anyone to do it or what they would gain from suggesting against it. In Bjorn Nyland's test it was about 9% better I think.
Welcome back, Bryan! Now you can decompress from that fiasco with your neighbor. I always look forward to watching your adventures. Please stay safe, and don't get too close to those cliffs!
There are some J-1772 chargers in Williams and some up Hwy 64 in Grand Canyon Junction before Tusayan. Very slow but good for a little boost before getting to Tusayan. Beats going all the way to Flagstaff. Cheers.
Nice 👍🏻 That's very helpful and I'm sure other will benefit from that too. I did see a couple RV parks along the way as well I probably could have charged at for a few hours in an emergency. Luckily now I have a rear hitch cargo box so should never run into issues where it's this close (although this one wasn't really too close). This one from last year was super close (0%) 😳 ruclips.net/video/mPwMn3apq1A/видео.html
Thanks for your video! They inspired us to take a quick trip the Grand Canyon this spring break-just got back home. We didn’t camp as the weather was freezing, but your videos are encouraging us to try soon. ;0)
Great video, I intend on doing some Tesla camping in my 2020 Model Y. Been watching your videos to learn from you. Some suggestions: 1. Flip the cargo box around, it's more aerodynamic and won't reduce your range so much. 2. Drive a bit slower on the high ways. Anything above 70 mph eats through your range! You can almost always make it to your destination if you drive slower. 3. There might be destination chargers you can stop at, even if you have to wait a little bit. 4. Get the Tesla CCS1 adapter from Korea. It's a life saver. At the very least, it gives you options and additional flexibility.
Thanks 😊 1. Test show it’s only a small % better and I’ve reached out to every major manufacturer and all said not to turn it around for safety and would void any warranty. Plus don’t like the look, but yes it’s definitely more efficient. 2, Yep, know this but prefer to drive with traffic or at least close to the speed limit unless it’s super critical like my most recent video where I was forced to slow down. Driven over 31k miles last 12 months and only really worried a couple times. 3. I use Plugshare to check for destination chargers or 3rd party but like you said they’re only good in a pinch or overnight as they’re super slow. 4. I also have the official Tesla CCS adapter. Just shot a new video for it that should be up later this week. You’re correct. It’s a lifesaver and opens up a ton more possibilities. Tested it at an Electify America 350 kW (250 Tesla) as well as a small MN ZEF Energy 50 kW and it worked great. All great tips though which will help other viewers and appreciate the comment. Where you planning to head for camping?
Awesome video man! I had no idea you have to pay for Tesla charging but $23 is way better than gas prices these days lol Dispersed camping out in that area is amazing, prob some of the best dispersed camping we've done with the trees and how big the sites are. Cheers man!
Thanks man! Yep, usually charging on the road at Superchargers is about $13-$15 to charge up, but this was a bit more than usual. Otherwise just charge at home for virtually free. The sites here were super spread out so privacy wasn't an issue at all. That's why I tend to like dispersed over traditional paid camping. Appreciate you watching!
Great and informative video, I just found you today July 21st! Getting my 2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range in November. Very helpful to watch and read the comments, I created a file and added screen shots of very helpful comments. Look forward to watching more.
At least Grand Canyon has a supercharger in Tusayan now! Back in 2019, didn't, so you could barely make it from Flagstaff to the Canyon and back down! I had to switch hotels to Best Western to get destination charger, so we could go out East Rim Drive. Now much easier, but still a bit of a stretch from Kingman as you found.. at least Flagstaff is a nice stop w/ the hotel there to wash up etc. The recent Route66 museum supercharger is very nice also, museums are great for quick fun visit while charging- same for Lone Pine outside Death Valley, and the Western Movie Museum!
For sure. It wouldn't have been so bad without my cargo box, but they still need to keep expanding quickly. I do now have the official Tesla CCS adapter for fast charging on 3rd party chargers so shouldn't have too much of an issue going forward. Agree the Route 66 Supercharger is nice with plenty of 250 kW stalls.
Nice video Bryan, the quality just keeps getting better! Loved the Seinfeld reference. I’ve never been to the Grand Canyon either and may try to make it there this year but it’ll take about 24 hours with about 11 charging stops. Oof! Gotta spread that trip out with some other site seeing along the way, but it’s doable.
Thanks! I'd definitely suggest staying in the area for a few days. Sedona isn't far so lots of great places to visit nearby. I'll probably head back when I have more time later this summer.
Suggest also using the Energy app, Trip tab in the car, to show actual/current vs projected %range over the navigation trip... that updates faster/more accurately than the nav "% arrival" does, and you can see at any time how much below or above the projected curve you are... especially if conditions are unusual, like having a roof box, or headwinds/rain, or higher speed etc
Yep, have used that in many videos and it's not much more accurate with the cargo box. The latest update has added wind and weather and have noticed it's quite a bit more accurate with the cargo box.
I assume you can have climate control and the 12v outlets active while you are charging right? So you can have AC running while you're in the car waiting for the charge?
Great video. Went to Grand Canyon last summer. We will definitely go again after we receive the delivery of MYLR. When we were in Grand Canyon, it surprised us that we saw a lot of people driving EV to there and they have the charges in the park near to the hotels. I didn’t know if they were supercharger or destination charge but I thought it was cool to have those.
Thanks! Those are usually Destination chargers. The Superchargers are the larger white ones with the red Tesla logo on them. The darker gray ones are the destination which are great for charging overnight, but because they're so slow, aren't great if you need a quick charge. It is nice to see more charging options now though 😀 Thanks for watching!
Could you have taken the hot burner and the Jackery outside the vehicle and done your cooking on the table? If Sentry mode is on, that would continue cooling the fridge, correct? I know you were close to a SC, but I would be concerned with additional battery drainage with Camp Mode just to cool the fridge. I regularly have significant battery drain (25-30%) with 8-9 hours of Camp Mode with my 2020 M3 SR+. If I’m not close to a SC, it’s always a factor that I must consider for the next morning. I would also think, in the instance in this video, that letting the fridge not run for an hour or two would be fine as long as you’re not opening it constantly. Thanks for all of these videos. I’m making my way through them and getting lots of great ideas for my Summer-long camping trip.
Hey Ken - I definitely could have taken the Jackery out and cooked on a table and often do, but because of the wind just decided to do it this way. That's really high battery drainage for 8-9 hours. My guess is your Model 3 doesn't have a heat pump? Newer models (not like 2020 is old :) use less than 1% per hour unless conditions are really drastic like -30ºF. Otherwise even in summer temps up to just over 100ºF it's always stuck to just under 1% or at. The fridge uses such low amounts of energy that I don't even bother cooling it off from a wall outlet before hand as it only takes about 15 minutes then uses sometimes less than 5w to keep cool and I leave mine plugged in for days and even weeks at a time with no significant energy loss. Hope that helps!
@@bryanhauer Thanks. Yeah, I’m trying to figure out why I have so much battery drainage. I don’t have a heat pump in my 2020 M3 SR+, but Camp Mode drainage shouldn’t be that bad. I’m never in extreme conditions (it’s not my thing). Good to know about the fridge. I’m considering buying one and a power source for my trip. I likely won’t be doing any cooking but it would be nice to run a coffee machine and also store yogurt, cheese, salami, sandwiches, salads, etc for breakfast & lunch.
@@kenctravels I'll be doing a review in the next couple weeks of a new one that was just sent to me. Might be worth checking that out before purchasing. The size and look are great, but haven't put it to the test yet. Will be heading out camping with it this week so stay tuned.
The freeway from Kingman to Williams are some of the gnarliest I have ever drove on to. That was March 2023, I hope its better now. Came across a couple of 20" rimmed teslas with blown tires and bent rims along the way. Even the big rigs were avoiding the potholes like a plague. It was kinda competing with the grand canyon depth wise! :P
OMG! Thank you for these videos and the tip about the America the Beautiful pass! I get my baby (2022 MYLR W ex/ B in / 20/ FSD) next week! These videos have been so helpful! I take my first camping trip to IN, July 4th!! My Tesmat is here and I got my tray yesterday. My shades get here Saturday!! Let me know if you are ever on the East coast!! Camping twinsies! #FL
Dang my man's got some cojones on him. I would of definitely wimped out and driven to charger that was out of the way! But glad to see the Tesla made it! Taking my first road trip this week from FL to MD!
Haha! Nice. Enjoy your first trip 😀 If you don't have a cargo box, just charge about 5% more than it says you'll need to get to the next Supercharger and leave.
Watched the Tesla key video. Sad about your car. But I subscribed because Tesla and Camping. Beautiful car Bryan. Notifications and bell icon is on. You are my new favorite channel.🚙🛻🪫🔋👍
Pro tip is to plug into the destination chargers by the yavapai lodge while you’re exploring and hiking in the park. It’ll save you a big chunk of that $23 supercharge session in tusayan.
Just heard you say you have a car wash membership I wanted to know if that’s a touchless car wash or just a regular tunnel car wash with rotating rugs/brushes?
Yep, it was great! I'm hoping to go back and see a lot more. I only had a couple days on this trip and it was last minute, but definitely plan to go back. Out of curiosity... where do you charge most in a Leaf? Electrify America? Also what are speeds like to charge up? This is my first EV and being a Tesla I'm still trying to learn about other EV manufacturers. I've seen some videos on the VW ID4 and of course Ford Mach e, so just curious since Nissan has had the leaf out for so many years what the charging experience is like. Thanks for watching 😀
@@bryanhauer my charging experience has been interesting, especially on road trips, that isn't normal on a 40kw battery, then again I'm not normal either. I'm thankful for living across the street from a free99 charger and my mom has a Chevy Bolt, loves it. They charge at home, so I charge there too, at the slow charge it's great for when not having to go farther than just across the city. Otherwise I would hope that newer apartment buildings would start putting in chargers. I of course live in a 1970s building, and the don't care about fixing the parking lot, but some people have other priorities than others. I like to seek out other charging when out and about, but most my trips are within one charge distances. I've heard Colo spgs Nissan is free, so have check that out. And where I got my car from I can get free charging there too, it's sorta a hassle trying to get a hold of somebody, for fast charge that takes over an hour, I just learned to plan a head. I'm learning about all the new cars that hit the streets, I've been to 5 car shows and I've seen rivian r1t, Audi e-tron, mac e, Kia 6, vw id4, to name a few! Hope this helps👋🏻🚗🔌😁
No high speed charging adapters. Most EA's don't even carry Chademo any longer as it's being phased out (also nobody is going to buy a $400 adapter that will be useless in a few months) and there's still no CCS adapter from Tesla (although it's supposed to be out any month now here in the US). I'm waiting impatiently for Tesla to release the CCS adapter. I know there's a couple very expensive 3rd party options, but those aren't supported by Tesla and they top out at 50kW.
Loved the intro!! Great video and I am excited for the NorthWest! It is on my list of places to visit. How did you do the time lapse of the stars? Super cool! I want to give it a try this summer when I’m in Westcliffe, CO.
Hollywood secret 😉 Actually it's Storyblocks. Will occasionally throw in footage from them if I don't have it or drone shots from places like National Parks where it's prohibited. While I shoot 95% of my stuff, it's an invaluable asset for creators 👍🏻 Thanks for the kind words, Eddy! Glad you enjoyed the intro 😀
Because this video was filmed in March/April of 2022 and that adapter hadn't even been released yet. About a month after this video was posted I was one of the first to get a CCS to NACS adapter from the official Tesla Japan store. It wasn't released officially here in the US until almost 6 months later. Gotta remember not every video on RUclips is from today 😉
Steering wheel tray is cool. Being in a hot environment, have you noticed the difference in a much cooler car vs. an ICE vehicle that generates huge amounts of heat in the front of the vehicle? Have you ever had to use the Jackery for the Tesla?
Funny enough the Tesla gets pretty hot sometimes cause of the huge panoramic roof. Even with a cargo box up there I still feel the heat sometimes so no real discernible difference on that. As for the Jackery... I have charged the Tesla with the Jackery (only a tiny amount) and actually shot a video for it, but never posted it cause the audio was messed up. I'll probably reshoot it this summer.
What direction is the wind coming from? If you are driving into a headwind then when you turn up to Tusayan it will be a crosswind which won't reduce battery as fast. You'll make it!
I believe this day it was coming from the Southwest. Was a bit worse coming back to Vegas as it was more of a headwind, but made it no problem both ways 😀
Model of what? For the camera I use a combination of a Canon EOS R & also an iPhone 13 Pro. For audio I was using the Rode Wireless Go 2 mics in this video. Hope that helps! Wasn't sure what your first question was though.
Hey Bryan, I just found your channel today and have been binge watching. Im thinking of starting a second channel designed around Tesla Camping, similar to your channel. We Purchased our Model Y back in November and have been waiting for Spring/Summer to start taking camping trips. Quick question do you think there is more drag on the top cargo box vs the bumper pull box style. Thanks in advance!!! Ps: I could get the Tesla Tray table affiliate link to work. I think I tried in three different videos
Oh cool! I appreciate you watching 😀 Model Y is a great camping vehicle so I'm sure you'll love heading out on the road this summer. There is definitely more drag on a roof top cargo box vs a rear box. I lose about 25% on long stretches going 75mph while a rear might only lose around 5-10% at most. I have looked at a company called Stowaway2 that sells a swing out rear cargo box that looks like it would be great. I initially opted not going that route because any rear cargo box will block cameras and sensors used by Autopilot so was hesitant to do that although I don't think it would be that much of an issue. Just something from a safety standpoint to take into consideration. As for the tray, I noticed recently they switched the link on Amazon so need to update more of the videos where I have that link. Here's a valid one for the tray... Get the tray here: Steering Wheel Tray for Tesla: amzn.to/3OtYJPk
I don't usually plug the fridge into the Jackery and instead directly into the rear 12v. It uses around 50 watts at startup to cool off, but once it gets to its desired temp (takes about 15 minutes) it usually uses around only 5 watts. The reason I don't use the Jackery even as a passthrough or backup for the fridge is because I found that when I did, the Jackery would think there's nothing plugged in because the fridge was pulling so little or sometimes zero watts that it was tricked into thinking nothing was plugged in so the Jackery turned off that port. If I plug directly into the 12v and make sure to leave Sentry Mode on or Camp Mode when camping, the car stays awake and provides power to the 12v constantly. I've left the fridge on for weeks at a time and it worked flawlessly. I notice almost zero range loss from leaving it on all the time. It's very efficient once it's at the correct temp. I set mine to 37ºF. Here's a video I did on it that talks about many of those aspects: ruclips.net/video/MMZaqy_qGZk/видео.html
Visit Paradise Inn Lodge at Mt. Rainier............Go now in the Spring before the snow cap melts. Try hard to make it there on a night before a clear sky day. Then get a lodge room with bath room at the end of the hall..........lol.. Get up with the sun to eat breakfast in the lodge and see the snow capped mountain top. Then take a hike up the snow to see other snow capped mountains in the distance. Be sure to wear sun block because you may want to go up farther than you at first thought..........Nice job on this video. Thanks
You can find all my gear listed with links in the description of each video. The fridge/freezer I'm using is the Bodega: geni.us/ksJIgM and the window shades are from Evannex. Hope that helps 😀
👍Hi Bryan. Are you powering the refrigerator with the 12v cigarette outlet in the Tesla? Thanks long time subscriber, liker, and let the ads play in full kinda guy, Brian ✌️😎
Thanks so much! Yes, I'm powering it through the 12v. The one thing you have to remember is to always keep Sentry Mode on and then switch to Camp Mode when camping. This keeps the Tesla awake so the fridge doesn't turn off and prevents the Tesla from sleeping. The way the 12v works in a Tesla is the main battery constantly tops off the 12v so in reality, you're just pulling from the main battery pack.
Hey Bryan, interested in getting a roof box and want to understand the range hit. You left with 98% SOC with an estimated 22% arrival. At 14:55 you arrived with 12% which would mean a 10% impact. I have heard several people say it’s a 25% hit. I know you no longer run the roof box, but can you please clarify?
Just depends on distance, wind, temp, elevation etc. Those things will be impacted more by the cargo box simply due to the aerodynamics working against the car. I've seen anywhere from 10% - 35%. As for your box... I emailed you yesterday with tracking from Tesla 😉
Understand. People seem to be throwing a blanket number at it when discussing. Of course other factors/variables as you mention have overall range impact along with cargo box. I have a hitch bike rack so hitch box isn’t feasible and don’t want bikes on roof. And yes I received! Now where’s the new video?! 😆
Been watching your videos for a few weeks now, my son and I love them and hope to do some of the same kind of trips once my Y comes in. Quick question, how much would reducing your top speed help save your efficiency and increase your range, particularly in your situation here where you might have had to go way out of your way to charge or risk not making it? Would you have to reduce it drastically to make much of a difference? Thanks again for your videos, keep them coming!
Thanks so much Patrick and tell your son I said hi 😀 Reducing my speed would definitely extend the range and I've done that a few times when I knew it would be close. In fact I've even drafted behind a semi truck at 55mph before to reach a Supercharger, but generally I would prefer to not have to worry about speed. I'd rather just drive normally (a couple mph over the limit) and try to plan around that although it will definitely extend the range. From my understanding the ideal speed for a Tesla is around 56mph, but in most cases where the speed limit is 75mph, driving 56 could be dangerous to you and others so I generally try to keep close to the posted limit. I'm not sure mathematically the exact gain, but it's probably pretty significant over a 200 miles stretch.
@@bryanhauer Thank you for this! I am trying to learn what I can before mine gets here. Driving 56mph in a 75 zone would be really bad!! That is interesting about drafting off a semi though!!
@@pweaver8839 You can model speed impact on range and charging, with ABetterRoutePlanner- wonderful tool for pre-planning EV trips overall, but here you can also update the Speed setting to 110% or 125% of the speed limit (or 80% etc), to emulate higher or lower speed, and see what range/charging impact is.
Thanks 🙏. Probably not. I like the 20’s. Honestly I wouldn’t even mention the cargo box anymore as I don’t mind it, but if I don’t 100 people start screaming about lack of range of EV’s.
Nope. Not at this place. This is dispersed camping on BLM land so it's free and first come, first serve. You can always check apps like Campendium or The Dyrt and search based on whatever criteria you want. This was a great place and close to the South Rim entrance.
@@bryanhauer thank you, I'll plan a trip out there with the family on the weekend. I'm looking to buy one of those tesloid model y tent. Amazing video by the way.
New subscriber... been watching more recently so if this question has already been asked pardon my re-asking... Why not pack your overhead container but put it inside the car on a tarp or something to keep everything clean. You clearly have the room for it. When you are ready to camp just pull out the container place it on a foldable table or something to keep it off the ground (less dirt in car) and do your camping. When ready to go, put the dry tarp down, slide container into vehicle and away you go. Now maybe it is the video depth that I am not seeing properly... but to mee it looks like the container will fit. Is that possible?
Good question! The size is a bit deceiving on camera. With nothing back there it might fit, but barely so wouldn't allow for the fridge or Jackery or anything else, but even if I could relocate those items, it's awkward to handle empty for one person much less full of stuff. I also often will just pull over at a truck stop or rest area to nap/sleep or even occasionally at a hotel parking lot or in a city to "stealth camp" and would look odd transferring it back and forth (if I could physically even do that with stuff in it). Plus someone could just walk off with it. I do hope to address this soon though as I would prefer to not lose the range any longer so am looking at other options. There also is some wind noise at high speeds I wouldn't have if I either removed it or replaced it with a rear cargo option. Thanks for the comment and for subscribing 😀
For sure. Nobody around where I was and only walked just up the road, but good tip. This got me thinking and just realized something I hadn't previously known and will for sure mention in an upcoming video... if you get in the Tesla at night to sleep, you must hit the lock button manually on the screen to lock the car so nobody outside can open it. If you use the app (which I've done many times) the doors are still unlocked from the outside. My guess is this is in case you leave your phone in the car you can still open the doors, but that means many nights I actually had the doors unlocked even though it showed locked.
@Bryan Hauer it was towards the middle when you arrived at the camp site and showed the tires and wheels being filled with dirt you mentioned that you have a subscription to a car wash so it didn't matter how dirty the car was
@@deltaforce7026 Oh... your original question shows "car was back in Vegas", but I now see you meant "car wash back in Vegas." I used to go to Foamy's on Jones, but it since closed so I now just use the touchless one at my local Sam's Club. It's also only $7 which is nice 👍🏻
Haven't done that trip in my Tesla, but have previously. It's a great drive along the coast. I do plan to do that this summer. Went to Yellowstone last season so probably will skip that this year, but will probably try Yosemite.
I didn’t realize that there was dispersed camping right behind the superchargers. I spent a fortune just to get some sleep across the street at the Grand Canyon Plaza Hotel.
awesome vid ! 😊damn. a model Y with a cargo box. you can carry the house along with all the storage. easy tip for exting range when carrying overhead cargo, slow down to aorund 60mph. huge difference in battery usage. might save someone from getting stranded.
Thanks. Appreciate you watching! Unfortunately going 60 in a 70 or 75 isn't always safe and I would only do that in a an emergency. I have done that once or twice when it was super questionable if I'd make it so I drafted at around 60 behind a semi for the last 20 miles and arrived with 1%.
it's awesome to drive a tesla to grand canyon the mileage calculation is very unreliable going to grand canyon given all the uphills. I have driven my M3 SR+, from phx to grand canyon, I barely made it to flagstaff at 8% just charged up, 100 miles distance may need 150 miles from the battery
Thanks for the suggestion, Mike! I will definitely do that more especially in interesting old west towns like Kingman. Lots of fun stuff to explore. Appreciate you watching and for the suggestion. Always trying to make the videos better 😀
Is the purpose of camp mode to ensure power continues to the fridge? Because it wouldnt make sense if you were keeping the temperature on but having doors/rear hatch open? New to Tesla camping
Camp Mode is primarily for temp control, but yes it also keeps the fridge running. The door was open for a short amount of time while I cooked in the back and still keeps the inside at whatever temp I want without using much extra power. You sound like my mom when I was a kid telling me to keep not let all the cold air out 😀
Nice video! You must go to Utah, 10 National Parks, stayed in natl. forest in southern Utah. Stayed in National Park at Dinasor national campground $20 bucks per night, they also have a lot of BLM land. Took me 2 mo. To see it all.
Thanks Ronald! Will for sure be spending some time this summer in Utah. So far will be heading back to Zion as I'm hiking Angels Landing, Bryce Canyon, Park City and might head back to Moab for a day or two as I did that last year. It's an incredible state for being outdoors and yes lots of great dispersed camping and/or low cost campgrounds. Appreciate you watching!
So glad you made it. I work for a hotel company and I know that there a re a couple level 2 chargers at the holiday inn Express and the la quinta in Williams if you need to bail out. I am glad you didn't go to flagstaff. I would go have slowed way down going 5mph less will get you there. Also. Its Two sai ahn. Tusayan
@@bryanhauer oh and you can imagine what it was like when there was no supercharger in Tusayan. I would plug my car into the outlet at the bottom of the light posts. :).
It's usually quite accurate now even with the cargo box since the Christmas update and even on my recent trips (videos about to be released) it was super accurate. That wind was pretty nasty, so imagine that was the reason.
In this video I was using similar to a Twin XL, but I've upgraded since and now use one of two from EXPED. These are by far the most comfortable sleeping mattresses for vehicles. It's in the video. I charge at the Tusayan, AZ Supercharger in this very video. If you're looking for a non-Tesla fast charger, I'd suggest checking the Plugshare App.
I often think about the same. Would love the extra room. Next year I hope to have it with the Cybertruck & a luxury trailer or the second a class B style Sprinter van that is electric with a decent range, I'll be the first in line.
@@bryanhauer I don’t think you’ll be seeing the Tesla truck anytime soon, well at least not until 2024 or 25, anyway that’s what I bought a class B van not a bad price, Thor Rize or scope, Same van just different color cabinets
@@JerseyStyle7 I wouldn't be surprised if you're right. They're way behind. If another vehicle pops up that is electric that can do what I need camp wise (think Class B) or someone comes out with a truck that can legit tow and still get 400 miles per charge I'll get it. I'm not in too much of a hurry, but would like to probably get something by the summer of next year. I'd prefer not going back to gas, but we'll see.
Nope. I go the speed limit or slightly over. Not going to do that unless it would be absolutely needed. My view is the car should be driven normally or I should get something else 😀 With that said, I have done that when I really wasn't sure I was going to make it one time so I got behind a semi-truck and drafted at about 60 mph for the last 20 miles and that did seem to help. Arrived with 1% 😳
But then I'd be going 65 in a 75 which is dangerous and well... boring 😀 The car is meant to be driven and I made it with 12%. Actually the optimal speed for a Tesla is 56mph, but again that would not be smart or safe. With all that said... I get what you're saying and am just being snarky. Yes, I could save battery by going slower, but unless it's a true emergency where I more than likely won't make it, I'm just going to drive the car at the speed limit. The couple times that did happen, I drafted off a semi-truck going about 65mph for the last 20 miles to a Supercharger which did help quite a bit. Thanks for watching and the comment.
It’s totally worth it if you need the extra space for camping gear etc. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without it. I’m ok with an extra stop to Supercharge on long travel days. With that said… if you don’t camp or need it a lot I’d probably agree with you. For me it’s a must.

Been watching your vids since the keyed car incident, you handled that correctly with class,

Thank you so much for watching and hello, Japan. I would love to do some camping in Japan. Maybe next year 😀

Thoroughly enjoyed the whole video. Getting my Y in two days. Thank you!
Nice 👍 Appreciate you watching!
Sweet video man. I'm hoping to hit this spot in late november or early december with my wife. I appreciate your content.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that 👍 I had a great time there and plan to go back the early part of next year myself. You’ll really enjoy it.
Thanks!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the video 😀
Interesting. But I'm still inclined to position it the normal way, just to avoid getting laughed at. =D
Welcome back, Bryan! Now you can decompress from that fiasco with your neighbor. I always look forward to watching your adventures. Please stay safe, and don't get too close to those cliffs!
Thanks Rene! Nice to be back out on the road 😀
We didn’t camp as the weather was freezing, but your videos are encouraging us to try soon. ;0)
That's so cool to hear 😀 Thank you for watching! 🙏 Let me know how it goes when you do head out on a camping trip as things warm up.
Thanks for the video Bryan. Always entertaining and the 33 min flew by!! Welcome back!
Glad you enjoyed it 😀
Great video, I intend on doing some Tesla camping in my 2020 Model Y. Been watching your videos to learn from you.
Some suggestions:
Also Sentry Mode will keep the refrigerator going using less power than camp mode (if you're away from the car or don't need the climate control)
Thanks 😊
@@TheRealMartin Yep, covered all that in numerous videos 😀
This is super helpful. Will be on a road trip later this year and part of it will be going from LV to the Grand Canyon. Thanks for sharing.
Oh good. Glad it was helpful 😀
The music and night sky shot were amazing
Thanks 🙏
Great and informative video, I just found you today July 21st! Getting my 2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range in November. Very helpful to watch and read the comments, I created a file and added screen shots of very helpful comments. Look forward to watching more.
Thanks so much, Linda 🙏 Let me know if you have any questions as you’re watching. I’m more than happy to help 😀
In the NW region, look at going to Coeur D'Alene where there's a big beautiful lake and it's right off I90.
Oh cool. Thank you for the recommendation. I plan to head to the NW later in the summer. I’ll mark that place down as a must see 👍
At least Grand Canyon has a supercharger in Tusayan now!
The recent Route66 museum supercharger is very nice also, museums are great for quick fun visit while charging-
same for Lone Pine outside Death Valley, and the Western Movie Museum!
Just got my Y and I’m so excited to camp🤗. When are we going to Glacier NP? We need a Tesla Y camping meetup! 🤣
Congrats! You're going to have a blast! I hope to get to that area later this summer. Will update you for sure 😀
I assume you can have climate control and the 12v outlets active while you are charging right? So you can have AC running while you're in the car waiting for the charge?
Correct 👍
It’s still terrible! Honestly probably the worst stretch of interstate I’ve ever traveled.

It’s currently a touchless car wash, but I have used the rotating brushes too without issue.
I truly appreciate this video. I am planning a drive via the same route to the canyon myself in November so ut's good to see what the route is like
Oh cool. Glad it was helpful! If you don't have a cargo box or aren't towing anything, you shouldn't have to worry about range at all. 👍🏻
Been thru Williams az , and grand canyon last summer in my Nissan leaf, what a trip, it was fun. And I love taking about it at ev car shows 🤣👋🏻🔌🚗
Yep, it was great!
@@carolinebray82 Sure does. Thanks for the info 👍🏻 Lots of new EV's so it's an exciting time.
Why didn’t you go to electrify America in Williams ?
While I shoot 95% of my stuff, it's an invaluable asset for creators 👍🏻
Thanks for the kind words, Eddy! Glad you enjoyed the intro 😀
Why not get a CCS to NACS plug, gives you way more options along the way, if needed
@@bryanhauer ah makes sense :)
Nice google , Whats brand model name or link ? Also what camera are you using to record videos with clear audio

Love watching these road trips!
Oh good. So glad you enjoy them 😀
Is the fridge also charged by the Jackery? What kind of wattage does it pull?
Thanks
Thanks so much for the great tips, Nick! Appreciate it 😀
What cooler are you using? and where did you get the window coverings.. definitely gonna need some soon
@@bryanhauer awesome thank you so much!!!! 😊
@bickert19 8AM Central Time tomorrow 😉
Thanks so much Patrick and tell your son I said hi 😀
Reducing my speed would definitely extend the range and I've done that a few times when I knew it would be close.
@@cgamiga I never knew that would be a thing! Thank you!
Another great one. Would you consider going down to 19inch Gemini wheels for better efficiency?
Thanks 🙏. Probably not. I like the 20’s. Honestly I wouldn’t even mention the cargo box anymore as I don’t mind it, but if I don’t 100 people start screaming about lack of range of EV’s.
I also live in Vegas and want to do the same trip, so you have to reserve camp spot in advance?
Nope. Not at this place. This is dispersed camping on BLM land so it's free and first come, first serve. You can always check apps like Campendium or The Dyrt and search based on whatever criteria you want. This was a great place and close to the South Rim entrance.

Remember @24:17, Camp mode disables walk-away auto lock and Sentry... so if you go off and take a walk/hike, you need to manually lock the car.
Bryan, enjoyed the video. How do you find disbursed camping when traveling out west?
I use the app Campendium & cross reference it with BLM.gov. I believe many use the App The Dyrt too.
@@bryanhauer Thanks.
@@senordockman1138 Yep 👍🏻 On Campendium (website & app) you can set filters so I select public land.
I love Tesla!!!!!!
Nice trip
You mentioned car was back in vegas. Which one do you use
Let me know where in the video since this was a while ago. This is the only Tesla I have. I only have a Model Y and was camping with it.
@Bryan Hauer I didn't no sams had a car was! I've used the one near downtown Henderson at the terrible near what use to be the Fiesta casino
Have you had a road trip from Vegas to LA and go along the west coast line and go to Yellowstone?
Haven't done that trip in my Tesla, but have previously. It's a great drive along the coast. I do plan to do that this summer. Went to Yellowstone last season so probably will skip that this year, but will probably try Yosemite.
@@bryanhauer if you can provide your plan, I am going to ‘steal’ it. We will be doing road trip this summer.
I didn’t realize that there was dispersed camping right behind the superchargers. I spent a fortune just to get some sleep across the street at the Grand Canyon Plaza Hotel.
Yep. Use the app Campendium and you’ll see all the spots available.
awesome vid ! 😊damn. a model Y with a cargo box. you can carry the house along with all the storage.
easy tip for exting range when carrying overhead cargo, slow down to aorund 60mph. huge difference in battery usage. might save someone from getting stranded.
Thanks. Appreciate you watching! Unfortunately going 60 in a 70 or 75 isn't always safe and I would only do that in a an emergency. I have done that once or twice when it was super questionable if I'd make it so I drafted at around 60 behind a semi for the last 20 miles and arrived with 1%.
it's awesome to drive a tesla to grand canyon
the mileage calculation is very unreliable going to grand canyon given all the uphills.
I have driven my M3 SR+, from phx to grand canyon, I barely made it to flagstaff at 8%
just charged up, 100 miles distance may need 150 miles from the battery
Luckily it’s gotten much better even with a cargo box since this was filmed.
Bryan, can you make a camping trip at Glacier National Park?
Hey Andrew! That is definitely on my plans for the summer. I missed it last year, but this summer I'll definitely be visiting Glacier 😀
When you go through towns eg Kingsman show us a few pics.
Thanks for the suggestion, Mike! I will definitely do that more especially in interesting old west towns like Kingman. Lots of fun stuff to explore. Appreciate you watching and for the suggestion. Always trying to make the videos better 😀
Awesome trip to the Grand Canyon.
Thanks man 🙏 Glad you enjoyed it 😁
Is the purpose of camp mode to ensure power continues to the fridge?
Tesla should add option to add a cargo box to calculate range better
Agree. It has done a lot better since the Christmas update, but still isn't great with calculating it super accurately.
Where did you get the led light bars?
Amazon. Here's the link: amzn.to/3vZ1lMF
Thank you!
Tusayan
Thanks Chris! That’s good to know for future trips there. I did see an RV park so possibly had that option too, but luckily didn’t need it 😀
@@bryanhauer oh and you can imagine what it was like when there was no supercharger in Tusayan. I would plug my car into the outlet at the bottom of the light posts. :).
Probably the roof box and wind caused the big % arrival discrepancy at that first stop. Very interesting.
It's usually quite accurate now even with the cargo box since the Christmas update and even on my recent trips (videos about to be released) it was super accurate. That wind was pretty nasty, so imagine that was the reason.
@@bryanhauer Cool. Looking forward to the vids. I love watching Tesla road trips.

What size is your bed? twin or full?
In this video I was using similar to a Twin XL, but I've upgraded since and now use one of two from EXPED. These are by far the most comfortable sleeping mattresses for vehicles. I did a review of the MegaMat Auto you can watch here, but I'll also leave links to both mattresses below so you can take a look.

You didn’t have to touch the steering wheel at all on auto steer?
It will occasionally ask for input so your hands should be close and ready to take over.
They need to add 110 outlet in the back for campers, cmon should be easy at the point
I expect the Cybertruck to definitely have that along with other camping features.
Where can you charge EV in South Rim Grand Canyon?
It's in the video. I charge at the Tusayan, AZ Supercharger in this very video. If you're looking for a non-Tesla fast charger, I'd suggest checking the Plugshare App.
👍🏽i sold my 2022 Tesla Y🤦🏽♂️ and ordered a Thor Rize Motorcoach 😂👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
With your roof box, do you lower your freeway speed for better range?
Nope. I go the speed limit or slightly over. Not going to do that unless it would be absolutely needed. My view is the car should be driven normally or I should get something else 😀
With that said, I have done that when I really wasn't sure I was going to make it one time so I got behind a semi-truck and drafted at about 60 mph for the last 20 miles and that did seem to help. Arrived with 1% 😳
I get anxiety when you sit there at the supercharger and talk for 10min before plugging in lol. You could save so much time! lol
Luckily I'm not in a hurry 😀 Take some deep breaths and relax 🧘🏼
@@bryanhauer wooosah
You could have reduced your speed to 65mph to mitigate the drag of the roof box.
Cool intro !
Thanks 🙏
Is this a long range model?
It is. 2021 MYLR. I have a cargo box on top so do lose about 25% range on long stretches of interstate.
@@bryanhauer how many miles will it really go without the cargo?
@@molos3466 It's rated for 326. When I first got it about 305. Now about 290-300 after a year.
Why wouldn't you slow down to 70mph? 77 seems high when you're trying to conserve.
I would have if I got super low, but the car is meant to be driven.
you could’ve saved efficiency by slowing down too
Of course, but I prefer to only do that if 100% necessary. Like the video after this one 😳
How much do you think the cargo box reduced your range?
Yep, around 15-25% 😀
Have you thought of using hitch storage instead? With storage box?
I have. It would block important sensors and Autopilot cameras so opted not to do that. I'm fine with the extra stop on long travel days.
If you slow down to 60-65 mph and loose few minutes then dont need 30 min detour. LOL
I didn't need a 30 minute detour. The car is meant to be driven. Driving 60 in a 75 is dangerous.
Season 2?
Correct 👍🏻
The community outside of the park is pronounced “two-see-an”.
Interesting. Another commenter said it was pronounced Two sai ahn.
@@bryanhauer very close
Gives me anxiety just watching this
Yep, this was a close one 😬
dang, thats a $600+ fridge!
I think about $400 unless they raised the price.
@@bryanhauer everything is raised in price now :(
@@iliketurtles536 Wow! That's quite an increase. Hopefully it comes back down soon.
lol I have the same pot
Target ftw 😀
Doesn't seem like having a cargo box is worth it.
It’s totally worth it if you need the extra space for camping gear etc. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without it. I’m ok with an extra stop to Supercharge on long travel days. With that said… if you don’t camp or need it a lot I’d probably agree with you. For me it’s a must.
Disregard. You answered my question. 😉
Did you find friends to camp with you?
Not sure what you mean. Not on this trip, but do have many coming up with friends or other creators.
