First Time Camping At The Grand Canyon - Living In A Pickup Truck Camper

- Is This My Last Camping Trip?? The Bad Luck Streak Continues when the Pickup Truck Camper Receives DAMAGES!! I live full time either of my two RVs, I have a 40ft Open Range 3x fifth wheel and my 94 Texson Pickup truck camper!! Unfortunately the truck camper gets damaged and im not sure how long it will take to fix or if it's even fixable? But before the bad luck happens with the camper I find an amazing camping ground located inside the Grand Canyon National Park at Mather's Campground Space 81!! Come camping with Mason and I while we explore the area on my Aventon Sinch E-bike!! I find a trail that rides along the top edge of the canyon with some amazing views!! Once back at camp I attempt to make homemade BBQ pizza but the package didn't come with the yeast packet so you wont believe how the pizza turns out!! We end the evening near the campfire enjoying a frosty beer out of my measuring cup haha. Just before it's time to leave I take Mason for a walk around the campground!!

Oh dang I guess I didnt add that into the video so im sure I'll get that question a lot haha. I was driving 65mph into a head wind of probably 30-40mph and I guess it was just too much wind so it caught the siding a ripped it down!! I heard it hit the roof of the truck so hard that I thought one of my solar panels flew off!! Haha

If you want to bump up your subs you may want to do a rig tour. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that channels that do those tend to blow up. It's worth a try, right?😂 Good luck!

Rough luck on the camper damage. I hope it's an easy (and not too costly) fix. The "Mason-cam" footage on the bike was priceless!
I think i have a plan to fix the camper as long as there isn’t too much wood rot!? But I’m not sure what to do with the truck. I might just have to deal with the scratches and cover them with touch up paint and clear coat 🤷♂️

Another great video. The Grand Canyon is so cool! We went there from Williams on the train this year. We will need to look at camping there so I can ride my bike along it in the future! I would also like to do a rim to rim hike in the future. One thing you might want to consider is making what I call an AZ Pizza. We will use a griddle or skillet and instead of pizza crust, we use tortillas. It turns out great and doesn't take long to cook. Really easy to do while camping! Keep the videos coming!
That’s the first time I camped there and honesty it was a lot of fun especially that bike trail so I would recommend it!! I did that train ride once and had a blast!! lol
I actually have tried pizza like that but I’m staying away from carbs so that’s why I was making keto pizza crust haha. I haven’t had pizza or any bread in so long I was looking forward to it!! Haha but nope just had to eat the topping haha

Three minutes in, the dog in his sling. Wondering if he likes it. Yes, he does, and this is the reason why. Dogs absolutely LIVE in a world of smells. They like all kinds of smells, even smells you and I do not really care for. They do not like chemical smells-- like burnt diesel, bug repellent, cigar smoke, varnishes, paints, paint strippers, solvents, etc. But any natural smell they just might like, and they can smell 300 times better than you or me. So he likes riding the bike with ya because of all the new smells coming his way. It is an endless thrill.

Water damage ? RVers worst nightmare as most of the time the issue stays hidden until it's too late. Then you have to chase down the source, wonder how many other areas have issues, and start worrying about black mold. You have to remember these things are built as cheap as possible, held together with glue and staples, all while being subjected to earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes every time you drive them. Time to examine every seam. Tough to stay on top of and most times it's a losing battle to father time. Wish you the best on fixing it.
I'm going to buy a Cirrus or Lance, both made of Azdel, so no rot or mold ... The Cirrus has an aluminum roof, the Lance has PVC both a huge step up from TPO or EDPM... 🌵
Actually when I purchased it the camper leaked in the front pretty bad!! Luckily it doesn't rain much in AZ haha. I found the leak and fixed it right away and haven't seen any leaks since. I figured the wood under there was damaged but I just figured I would wait until it became a problem haha!! Which now it has become a problem haha. So yeah theres probably more rot under there than I want to know about haha. Thanks for watching!!

aww man, rough luck there with the camper. they are pretty easy to work on actually. just start going thru and removing all rotten wood. replace the bad area with new wood. after that you got a sound base to screw siding back in and corner trim. i enjoy camping with my pups, looked like Mason enjoyed this camping trip. keep on rockin

When i was a kid i had a dog who used to ride bike with me. It was one of those big old 1940s boy's bikes that weighed about 80 lbs. Chip used to hold on to the tank with his hind feet an his front paws on the handlebars.😂 Sure Mason loved the pouch. Chip loved the bike ride with me. Brought back great memories.
Try a cauliflower crust for your pizza from the freezer section. Add desired toppings and bake 20 min. over the campfire until crust is browned. 0 grains and very delicious.
The Grand Canyon is a place I would love to go. Year after year after year, I've only been twice. Maybe 3 times but I love it. The Canyon does not disappoint.

That is what I love about dogs. Most know when their owner(s) are upset or sick or sad. They just want to comfort them like we comfort them, but when that metal fell on top of your truck from the bottom of your camper , I could feel the aggravation at that moment. But it could been a lot worse and I watched the video where you repaired it better than a professional. I'm just glad you and Mason weren't just getting into bed or just waking up. Stay safe.
I think Mason really enjoys the bike rides! He's such a mellow, cool little guy. BTW, don't feel alone about cooking mishaps. Its how you learn. I make my fair share and have been the cook in my family for 30+ yrs. Oh yea, when baking at high altitudes you have to make adjustments to time and temperature which should be on the box. 😊 My husband and I have a camper and every time we take ut out I notice that the screws that hold it together have moved. It amazes me that they make it down the road and function at all with the beating they take. I love your philosophy! Know we all have these "tests" in life. We feel it too! Be strong and safe. The bummer is a few years ago I decided I wanted to master bbqing pizzas so I made and ate pizza for breakfast lunch and dinner for two weeks straight!! I finally figured out the tricks to make it perfect every time!! But for what ever reason every time I try to make it on a video something happens haha. This time the yeast and last time the video completely flopped and I deleted it 😂
One day all the stars will align for my pizza making on film lol

That sucks about your Camper / truck. I hope that it is something that can be repaired relatively easy and inexpensive. The wife and I look forward to yours and Kennys (KOAT) videos every Tuesday. I just posted on his video that that wife and I finally finally found the right camper. I left Maryland on Friday night just before midnight and drove to Green Bay Wisconsin. I bought a 2003 Arctic Fox 860. Slept in it Saturday night at a full service Park N Ride. Then drove back to Maryland when I woke up Sunday Morning! It was about 1950 miles total in a weekend. Unfortunately due to Cindy's car accident from about a month ago..... she was unable to ride along. I did the trip solo. She was really happy with the camper and we are so excited to start our shenanigan's.
Oh wow that is really exciting!! You would be surprised how many people make comments on how they can’t find a truck camper and are still looking. So that’s really cool that you found one!! Even tho you had to drive far for it, but it had to be fun solo camping in it on the way home!! 😀 I bet you two are stoked to get out camping in it!!

Get yourself an appropriate sized tire tube to place between truck roof and camper floor. Pump it up to desired support. Some say it even helps with aerodynamics. At minimum it will prevent camper from scratching your roof.

I was within 50 miles from the Grand Canyon when I went to quartsite and I didn’t even realize it until I was near New Mexico. But I’m hoping to go there next year sometime.

Tent camped pioneer style over 20 years. Wouldn't do it now. Body doesn't work the same. BTW did you get a permit to film at GC? Someone else I follow had to.

When I purchased the RV a couple years ago, I knew it had a leak in the front and I just didn’t want to deal with it until it became a problem. So driving down the road I guess the wind caught it and pulled the siding and everything down. I was able to look underneath there and see that everything was pretty well rotted so that’s all that happened and I ended up making a video where I repaired it better than it was before. I am so sorry dear. What a crappy way to end a great adventure. I didn't realize two things were involved-truck top as well as the camper. I know that will be expensive to fix, I don't know if they make a protective cover for your truck top to beef it up and prevent damage. But hey. I love the bike tour. Hey 👋 Alice!! I think I have a plan to beef up the camper enough so it shouldn’t come back down to hit the truck. Unfortunately there is already damage to the truck but I guess it could be worse!! This week I’m taking the little Geo Tracker out for a tent camping video since I haven’t had time to fix the truck camper yet. I think Mason sorta liked that dog carrier 😂 I’ll start using it more lol. I think he likes going with me rather than staying behind haha. Thanks for taking time to watch the video 😊

The harness for mason was awesome ! Seeing that makes me second guess dog bread I have , they could never ride with me my girls are around 80 lbs old English bulldogs ! Minnesota
Awwww but I love English bull dogs!!! I have always wanted one but I always heard they were a lot of work? Like their nose and face needs wiped off everyday?? But yes I think it would be hard to tote around an 80 lb dog haha, Mason is only 16lbs haha

Yeah that's true!! This old truck camper is better built than my 2019 Fifth wheel hahaha!! When I purchased the truck camper I knew it had water damage but I figured I would wait until it became an issue to fix it. And I guess that time is the week haha. Thanks for watching!!

I looked at 3 campers this week...every single one had the same issue as yours....and the prices were unbelieveable.. so still hunting...shell will work for now. Or you will have to do a video on how you repaired the camper...😊

Dang that's a bummer you didnt find one but yeah I feel like truck campers are usually in the worst condition over other campers!! Probably because they travel so much more since people usually keep them on their trucks for months at a time. And yes people think their pike of junk is worth its weight in gold haha. As for the repairs on my camper im not sure yet if I'll video tape the repairs or just get it fixed. I have been so busy getting the Geo Tracker 4x4 all ready for the next video I haven't even taken the time to look at the damages on the truck camper yet. I hope it's easy to fix!! haha

So sorry to see the damage done to your truck.
Just watched a vid where a couple's 2 year old high-end truck camper had the whole front practically fall off from water intrusion... Talk about a bad hit 😪. Yours looks repairable for someone that's relatively handy. Their truck camper was in the shop for almost 4 months to fix (supply issues I think) and they were full timers, that means 4 months without their home. The repair must have cost big bucks, they wouldn't disclose the price but I guess it was cheaper than buying a new rig. Hopefully, you'll be up and running in no time, if you do most of the work yourself the cost should be minimal. Good luck, I'm sure Mason will be happy to lend a hand 😹
Ouch!! Thats gotta suck for that family!! Luckily im a general contractor so I could rebuild that entire camper if I needed too. At this point it's finding the time!! I just spent the last week editing this video and preparing my Geo Tracker to take out on next weeks video. I had to make repairs to that too and load all my gear into that tiny thing hahaha. Yh it's a minor set back with my xtrail and like you said I'm glad it didn't happen while on my adventures. Although our breakdown services are usually pretty good.

Hope you get your camper fixed soon so you can get back at it. I heard diesel heaters can be finicky at certain elevations but that may be false. Still looked like a good trip even with a few problems.
This week im camping in my off road geo tracker and I'll be sleeping in a tent!! I should hopefully have my camper fixed soon tho. Either way I wont miss making a video each week haha. Those diesel heaters can be finicky at high elevations but most of the areas in Arizona that get cool enough to use heat are in higher elevations haha. I was at 7000 ft during this video and I think that's the cut off elevation.
The trip was great and I had a bunch of fun even if the camper got damaged. But bad news sells so that's why I had to title it that way haha, Thanks for watching

That’s Mathers Campground which is inside the Grand Canyon park. I thought it was real nice although it didn’t have any hookups. I think there is another campground in the park that has hookups.

If I'm not mistaken E-10 is no ignition and my heater at my shop used to do that same thing so I switched fuel to kerosene and it ignite every time now
I didn’t realize you can switch to propane!? Did you have to change anything out? Or just fill it with Kerosene?

My class c separated ike that I put 2 aluminum angle iron across and suspended it with 6 inch L brackets that caught the main bea that goes down the side then caulk with eterno bond. Not the prettiest but works.

I had the same thing happen to me with my heater. Mine works so well I would always run it on low. But I guess that you need to turn it up and run it hot to burn the carbon. I had to rebuild mine. It was cheep. Two gaskets and a spark plug. Hopefully that's all you need. Hope it helps.
If mine ever goes out I'll buy either the name brand one or the smaller cheap Chinese heater!! I was dumb and purchased the biggest one they had and these heaters never shut off so it runs on the lowest setting and burns me out of the camper even with windows open!! So it never runs on height make it hot enough to burn out the carbon. Thanks for the suggestion!!
