Get a reliable car instead of garbage like Chrysler and you won't have to do regulator maintenance on catalytic convertors, starters, alternators etc. Battery is a consume item on a Tesla as well. I don't know about Tesla but radiator and its fluid to maintain battery temperature is also a thing on EVs. You spend less on brakes and transmission while gas vs EV charging is a wash if you are charging at a public charger (reality for many EV buyers). In case of Tesla and many other EVs, we also have to remember that you are paying thousands of dollars more compared to a well equipped and reliable Toyota, Mazda or even Honda. You might be thinking that you are doing the environment a favor but it definitely isn't a cost proposition. I'm not even going to go into the whole carbon footprint that is needed to mine Lithium since we aren't at high levels of lithium battery recycling yet. An electric lawn mower might help you recover cost against a gas mower but not a Tesla.
@@JTR253 i disagree with your statement and this does not apply to most developed countries. currently driving a 2nd hand Tesla S2017 and this car costs a lot less than othere equally luxurious cars to maintain, it also costs me 1/3rd or less per km to drive (pure fuel wise) almost no moving parts = less maintenance, have you driven an electric car more than 6 months ? where do you get your stats from ?
I'm a MY owner too in NY, and the most surprising thing about this review is the "great customer service." It's definitely not the case for me... I do think we are still in the early adopter phase, and the next gen models will continue to improve. There's pros and cons to any vehicle, and all cars have some sort of reliability issue during their lifetime. The defrost feature has worked perfectly on my vehicle in the winter, and I love it. Range does drop and an extra 10-20% overall as expected. In the spring, I use 10% to get to work in the winter I use 12% on avg, plus a 2-3% to heat/defrost the car after work. But its worth every % 😂.
Same in Finland, one guy has had to replaced the pump over 4 times. Tesla support was getting fed up with this customer and replacement cars were not always available. I'll stick to PHEVs for the time being.
Did you do any charge testing after properly preconditioning the battery? it showed you were only taking 6kw of charge at the super charger right when you plugged in cold. If you precondition and heat it up youll get 150-250kw of charging, even if you didnt precondition, as youre charging it will heat up the battery to charge faster. Huge difference.
Well, I have a 2023 model Y LR and will see how in does in my Northern Illinois cold weather. Most the time it is above 0, but we do have days that get below zero. Nothing like Montreal though. So far my Model Y has been very good. Thanks for your video and take care.
if you can't open the Tesla app nothing helps. I called service and almost an hour later I was told I needed service call at my home - 7 days later --- I'm on 2 weeks into my Tesla journey and almost ready to give up
Why buy a pretentious car when you frequently drive your own family in extreme conditions? Get something with history of reliability, is it really worth the risk for the cool points?...
To get your feet comfortably warm you have to switch manually heat feet and heat front area, switch off these fancy middle vents. You are welcome. Dunno why they don't do it in auto mode when temperature drops.
I have had an ev for 6 years in Victoria, BC area. When it gets below freezing, or way below freezing up to -12c the range is seriously reduced. I would not have an ev in a climate that was any colder than the west coast of Canada which would be anywhere else in Canada. The batteries cannot handle cold.
@@lakemaker I called the service center today, bc when I tried to schedule service through the app, it malfunctioned. He asked if I had tried the soft reboot (I hadn't). So I pulled into a parking lot and tried that with no luck. So he advised that I try uninstalling; then reinstalling it to see if fixes the problem. If it doesn't, he told me to call back tomorrow. It's pretty annoying the only way to schedule service is through the app vs talking to an actual person. The Y is second car I've been considering, but with the heater problems, the issues getting the new Tesla battery into production and musk's treatment of employees at tesla (and now twitter) :/ ,I'm becoming more frustrated and hesitant by the day.
I'm thinking of CANCEL my order now! I'm in Wisconsin ❄🌨🧊 with 4 kids .... whats your recommendation? Should I go with Toyota Sienna Hybrid? Or Model Y?
I have no opinion about the Toyota Sienna Hybrid. If I had 4 kids, I would get the Tesla Model X. If I do not get my Cybertruck on time, I will end up getting the X.
I feel like frameless doors are useless in most cars during the winter. I usually avoid rolling down my windows if I know they are likely to be frozen stuck
My folks owned a new 1968 Beetle and a used 1956 Beetle before that. I was mechanically familiar with both of these cars, rode in both of them a lot, and also drove the '68. There was no such gasoline fueled heater of which you write in either one of these cars. If somebody had such a heater on a Beetle it was not stock equipment. Stop making stuff up. The air cooled engine on the Beetle used a heat exchanger on the exhaust manifold to heat the cabin. There were 2 vents under the back seat at floor level and this is where most of the heat came thru because of proximity to the rear mounted engine. There were 2 vents at floor level in the front, and 2 vents at windshield level for defrost, and these front vents didn't make much heat at all. And so when the weather got real cold we had trouble defrosting the windshield, just like a Tesla. But unlike a Tesla, the 1968 Beetle was dirt cheap at $1800 new, and my dad got the 1956 Beetle for 50 bucks.
@@onemoremisfitthey existed because I bought a used bug I think it was a 62. It had the little motor in t front for heat and it drew gas out of the main tank. It would smoke like crazy when I first started it and it didn’t work very good. I was 18 yo and just drove it for fun as a second car.
@@alleyoop5185 Probably aftermarket and dangerous. Our bugs made a ton of heat and would roast you, the only problem was about 90% of it was coming from the rear, so you had to be driving for a while to get enough heat all the way to the windshield in bitter cold.
Why would you have your home charger installed outside your home @ 7:31, instead of inside the garage? Especially in the cold climate of Canada...that seems really strange.
Some useful info. Not sure whether to go forward with a Model Y in a cold climate. Also I found the slow speed you spoke super irritating. But thanks for the info.
I have the same issue on frunk after car wash on MY, the last time it was frozen and I can't refill the washer fluid. The close appointment was few days later, luckily I call the server center and they can help me fix the latch . Thats crazy
One of the best videos because it tells the truth of how this car performs in cold. I am living in finland with -20 to -30 decree winters, and i dont have a carage for my car, so most likely this car is not for me.
That's funny 😂 I owned Fords and Mercedes in very cold weather. The battery in both couldn't start my car at times even though I had a full tank. It's especially true as the battery ages or you have a faulty alternator. Don't get me started on how long the battery lasts in extreme hot weather, a real battery killer. No problems with my Tesla, which I've owned for 3 years. To each his own.
I had the same exact issue with the doors I couldn’t get into my car at AlI. I tried pre-heating my Chrysler 300 several times also my radio went black but the music was still working. Apparently my heater wasn’t working as well apparently the blend door got stuck to cold. I also had the issue with my doors, I spent almost an hour trying to close my passenger door I was running late to work so I just duck tapped it closed lol. I also had issue with my Chrysler trunk, I went grocery shopping and had to leave it in there for several days because I couldn’t open it.
I live in Colorado where the temps can get down to - 20F for days or weeks at a time, much colder than in your video. Now I'm wondering if its a good idea to get one. I have a driving job and need a very reliable car. This is not getting my hopes up... considering the Ford Mach E, no idea if its better or worse.
So about the frunk, every car can have this problem with the front latch. every single owner or ex-owner of a car with a frameless window's car knows they can freeze. About the cables and battery that's normal. for the rest here in my country, you can get -22 C max
@@lakemaker yes in Bulgaria during the winter you can get max -22 c in the summer you can get plus 35c - 37c in some places even 40c In the mountains it may be a lot less than -22c
I really like the idea of EV's, but videos like this show me that owning one probably wouldn't be all that practical for me, at least not yet. I live in an apartment building, and an old one at that with no access to a garage, so my car is always parked outside, nothing I can really do about that unfortunately. I also live in a fairly rural area, and while there is one Tesla charging station I know of (which is about a 20-25 minute drive from where I live), winters over here can be harsh. So maybe later down the line when the technology improves a little bit more, and if I can ever afford it (big IF lol) I might consider it. But for now, my little old chevy cruze works just fine for me lol
You need to do what is best for your situation. EV is not for you at the time. 20-25 minute to get to a charger is too long. Hope you enjoy my other videos 🙏
Not to mention that Tesla costs a ludicrous $90k before taxes ( the price is a joke lol) in Canada. It's freezing half of the year here in Toronto area. If the cost of it comes down to around $35k only then maybe it might be worth it not now
Cold shouldn’t break the wires in the cable, but it might cause the insulation on the wires to become brittle, and crack, exposing the wires in some situations. Check it for cracks and damage before use.
Well, this definitely convinced me that a Tesla is not the car for me while living in extreme cold. It gets down to -60 here on a regular basis with the wind chill in January and February.
Tesla should offer 'manual' release handles for northern cities. Less capacity induces range anxiety for drivers. Which is challenging the price of Tesla.
Hej, Thanks for sharing the review. Living in Kiruna with M3LR, here we have an average temp -15 to -25⁰C during winter, sometimes goes lower to -30~-35⁰C in January. Fortunately, i haven't got any issue with heater. The only thing that bother me, the amount of snow or even ice goes inside my front skid plate which close to the battery pack (already replaced the factory skid plate with aluminium-based for a better durability).
I seem to only lose 20 percent max in my 2018 model 3 but do level 2 or nema plug to charge with preconditioning the car itself and have my seats and heat ready.

@lakemaker Years ago I had to take a number of business trips from Massachusetts to Bromont. We are used to cold, maybe single negative digits in New England, but not double digits. We had -19 temps on one trip. "Freeze your nose hairs" cold.
Well duh! I'm surprised if you have been living in these kind of conditions of a colder environment what makes you think that it wouldn't be this way! But thanks for the video. 😇
14:16 This is quite concerning. At what temperature do you start feeling the cold seeping in from the floor? Is it around -5°C or -10°C? I took a Tesla Model 3 for a test drive when it was -6°C and didn't experience that issue. However, I did feel some chill coming from the glass roof overhead, and the rear headrest always seemed to be cold

If somebody gave me a Tesla free and clear I would turn around and sell it immediately. There is no way I would choose to own one, but if other people like them and are willing to accept the negative trade offs vs a gasoline car that is their business.
Thx for sharing
Same in Finland, one guy has had to replaced the pump over 4 times. Tesla support was getting fed up with this customer and replacement cars were not always available.
I'll stick to PHEVs for the time being.

Did you do any charge testing after properly preconditioning the battery? it showed you were only taking 6kw of charge at the super charger right when you plugged in cold. If you precondition and heat it up youll get 150-250kw of charging, even if you didnt precondition, as youre charging it will heat up the battery to charge faster. Huge difference.

Why buy a pretentious car when you frequently drive your own family in extreme conditions? Get something with history of reliability, is it really worth the risk for the cool points?...
Pretentious in what way?

Where you located?
I have had an ev for 6 years in Victoria, BC area. When it gets below freezing, or way below freezing up to -12c the range is seriously reduced. I would not have an ev in a climate that was any colder than the west coast of Canada which would be anywhere else in Canada. The batteries cannot handle cold.

The air-cooled VW Beetles had gasoline-fueled heaters to keep the cabin warm back in the 60's and 70's. Maybe you need one of those.
LOL maybe!
Gasoline heaters for VW's did exist and were used. I think they were aftermarket heaters.
The Y will it fit in my garage

I owned Fords and Mercedes in very cold weather.
I had issue with my AUDI Q5 Diesel
