The guy opens the box to addiction. Finds it empty (an addiction metaphor). Keeps opening it, finds nothing still. Keeps opening it but not to discover but because he needs to. He wants what he wants (to keep opening it) until he dies.

Nothing is in the box. Man, that is a PERFECT metaphor for addiction. My wife and I kicked heroin together. There was no reward in it. It was just like opening an empty box every time you had to feed the addiction. It is the WORST path you could take in life. So glad we made it out alive.

Fun Facts about their Legendary guitarist Adam Jones:
Jones was offered a film scholarship but declined and chose to move to Los Angeles to study art and sculpture. His interest shifted to film, and he began to work as a sculptor and special effects designer, where he learned the stop motion camera techniques he would later apply in Tool's music videos, such as "Sober", "Prison Sex", "Stinkfist", "Ænema", "Schism", "Parabola", and "Vicarious". He graduated in 1987.
After graduation, he went to work at Rick Lazzarini's Character Shop. During the next couple of years, he worked the TV show Monsters. He designed and fabricated a Grim Reaper makeup and a zombie head on a spike (later used in Ghostbusters II) among others. After that, he went to Stan Winston's special effects workshop, where he worked on Predator 2, sculpting a unique-looking skull for the Predator's spaceship interior.[4]
Jones worked on several other films in Hollywood doing makeup and set design, including Jurassic Park, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Dances with Wolves, and Ghostbusters II. He did the "Freddy Krueger in the womb" makeup for A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, as well as work for A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.
He also worked on commercials for salad dressing (never aired), Olympic Paints & Stains (Albert Einstein makeup), and Duracell (boxers and taxicabs)

Adam Jones is the guitarist AND he's a gifted visual artist. The video is his creation. Some people are just beyond talented. Maynard James Keenan is the singer and lyricist. If I had to describe his writing style, I'd say he puts on other people's perspectives like you would put on a shirt. He gets into the mindset of a person (a junkie, a rude person, a victim of sexual abuse) and explores the world as they would see it. Yeah it's dark, but it's also a way of understanding the people around us, and ultimately ourselves. So when he's writing, it's not always from his perspective, and there's usually many different ways to interpret the message.

Thanks for reacting to Tool! This band has a very die hard following. They will love you to death if you give the band an honest try.
    Advice for listening/reacting to Tool.
Never watch the music videos. They have artistic meaning behind them but they are all weird as hell, and will distract you from the song.
Tool treats the vocals as just another instrument.
So when they mix the tracks the vocals are at the same volume as everything else. This is unusual and because of that can make the lyrics hard to hear sometimes. Either pull up the lyrics and read along or watch lyric videos.
PLEASE do not let this experience keep you from tackling this band. If I had to suggest some good starter songs I would start with The Pot, Stinkfist, Aenima.
What separates this band from all others is the time signatures, transitions and polyrhythms.
Specifically the drummer is named Danny Carey and I am not exaggerating when I say he is probably the best drummer in the world.
Listening to the music is really important if you want to give them an honest reaction.
Have a good time diving into Tool and don’t forget to Spiral Out!

Maynard James Keenan (vocalist) is always sitting either in the middle or in the back of the mix but it's done that way on purpose. Most bands feature a front-person or someone who is just GODLY on guitar...Tool likes to feature each of the four members equally. No one person is above the rest and each has their time to shine. It'll take a few listens to get an ear for it but once you got it...you got it. Definitely a top tier and legendary band! In 2019, they released their first album in 13 years...13 YEARS...and it went straight to number one on the Billboard charts. Not many artists have that kind of pull, let alone a progressive rock band. Progressive rock bands aren't known for their radio friendly songs (in terms of song length) so they don't get much air play which means that they don't get exposure to the mass public, but Tool...they're just that good that it didn't matter, people found them regardless. Keep checking them out and you'll see why. As a suggestion, I'd try to stay away from the official music videos. They don't offer anything in terms of meaning to the song and they tend to distract first time listeners. While you're trying to figure out why this claymation guy is so damn creepy and WTF this video is even about that people tend to miss the really good stuff in the song composition or lyrics. As for the next Tool songs to check out, try Laterallus or Schism. Forty Six & 2 is great as is Parabol/Parabola (done together; intentionally) but those would be good afterwards in my opinion; they're a little more abstract in the lyrics. ✌

Yal have to understand - this band obviously went on to become a legendary band - but this was their first debut track and music video (this was a big deal back in these days - the music video, unlike today as MTV has been reduced to faux reality TV shows). The creativity behind the art direction, design, and execution of music videos, especially for up-and-coming acts, where there was more say and input from actual artists (that time is long gone now) helped really shape and form a lot of bands fanbases. Also the custom artwork, puppetry, stop motion, and creative direction for this video was insanely avant garde for that time and actually really helped propel Tool's following. The creative execution showcased in this video was already on it's way out at that time but any animator or creative director can look back at this video and be very impressed.

I think your interpretation of the video is pretty on point, it's trying to make a kind of abstract image of addiction, including but not exclusively drugs. My interpretation of the box is that it's empty, the thing that the addict wanted all along was empty at it's center, something they chase but can't possess.
Having guitarist Adam Jones make most of their videos let them really get into the vibe and concept of their songs in some cool visual ways, and since they rarely appeared publicly, these videos are the iconic image of them most people saw, which definitely gave them a mystique.

The daughter came up to her with an old cigar box she had found in the dunes, presented it to her mother and asked her, "Mommy, guess what's in my box." I think the song is about what many people - especially when going through a crisis - believe about what living does to them, and inversely loss of life. They want to go back to the ambition they once knew, back to a time when they didn't realize that life will inevitably come to an end. That realization can't be undone. It won't go back into the box.

My interpretation of the video is more like it’s inspired by the poem The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe. The Story is that protagonist kill someone, tries to hide it and then hears a heartbeat through the floorboards, in the end it was just his conscience. I think that we, the views are watching the struggle and watching him hold on to an empty box. Addictions can very much be destructive all around us but in the end the substance of the addiction is nothing. That’s my interpretation of it anyway. :)

Then ask yourself just what does it mean to be sober? The answer is it means what you need it to mean from your own journey through life. All songs take on a life beyond what the writer first dreamed up. Because the listener interprets the song in their own way.

So I know all about being chewed up and my box of hope being empty when I wanted to get sober from alcohol and heroine. But by the grace of God today my box of hope is full of what I wanted. The song is prolific for an addict.
Asia your innocence is so beautiful ❤️🥰🌴🌄🐊

Watch versions with the lyrics. Their songs have powerful lyrics. The videos will just distract you. Check out songs from A Perfect Circle also. Same singer "Maynard" from Tool. Listen to 3 Libras and Judith....Judith is about the singer's Mom who was left paralyzed from a stroke.

The video looks like Claymation to me - stop-motion animation using clay figurines/objects. If you don't know how stop-motion animation works, you basically are just taking frame by frame photos to generate a film, moving the figures ever so slightly between pictures(frames) to create animation.

The videos, much like the songs are an artistic release and open for individual interpretations. But the message is probably the most transparent of the catalog.

Sweet Asia, the way he describes addiction really hits home when you read the lyrics...
    "...I will only complicate you
Trust in me & u fall as well,
I will always find the center in you (your heart)
I will CHEW IT UP & LEAVE..."
He is looking for his heart in the box - the heart he NO LONGER has. The heart he had when he wasn't ruthless, & cold, & conniving, & ADDICTED...
If the lyrics are being overshadowed & you can't hear them, Violet Orlandi did an acoustic cover & you can hear the lyrics really well - look for "tool - sober (violet orlandi cover)"
Someone named "L C" also posted the lyrics there, so you can read them while she's singing & it will make sense...

Songfacts: This was written about a guy the band knows who can only do great, inspired, stuff when he's high. The words "Jesus won't you F--king whistle, something but the past and gone" is actually referring to how this guy kept talking about the same old stuff over and over again, as in, "Christ almighty, can't we talk about something new???"
Tool guitarist Adam Jones explained in an interview with Guitar School: "The song and video are based on a guy we know who is at his artistic best when he's loaded. A lot of people give him sh-t for that. I don't tell people to do or not do drugs. You can do what you want, but you have to take responsibility for what happens. If you become addicted and a junkie, well, that's your fault."

Tool is my all time favorite band 🖤 I’ve been listening to them since like 1990. I would suggest lyric videos for Tool. Maynards vocals are usually always further back in the mix, and most of the official videos are just excuses for Adam Jones, their guitarist, to show off his stop motion skills lol they’re good but can be distracting. You should listen to everything, but if I had to make suggestions: Lateralus, Forty Six & 2, Schism, The Pot, Third Eye, The Grudge. Everything is good though. Them and Jinjer are the only two bands that in my opinion have never released a bad track. Hope you guys do more! Love ya!

"What is in the box?" Not sure if you ever saw the movie Pulp Fiction, but if you have... what was in the briefcase? Its not so much exactly what is in the box (or briefcase), but whatever is in there is motivating the characters in a very deep way.

Yall gotta take into consideration this video was made in the 90's, a pinnacle of goth/macabre in main stream culture and TOOL was a group of artists in every way, their music was crucial to the times because of their literal mind bending lyrics, unbelievable guitars_bas lines and visually overestimating videos. Also if im not mistaken they're videos were stop motion claymation, were glad you like them as much as the rest of us do!

Wow I never even questioned the meaning of the box. I had only seen the music video a handful of times.
There's Tool and there's Tool's music videos. To clarify, each band member are arguably the best at what they do. It's impossible to grasp everything that's going on in Tool's music because of how much thought goes into every detail of their music. You can listen to one of their songs 20 times and discover something new each and every time. Hell, I've heard some of their songs over a hundred times and I'm still discovering new things. I feel that their video's don't really add value to their music. In fact, it takes away your attention from the song because their video's are so intense with all the weird things that go on in them. Don't get me wrong, I love Tool's music videos. They're so unique and have so much to say. Even their live performances are incredible to watch. I know I said that the video's don't add value, but the live performances do. Watch the live Pro Shot version of Sober from 1993. The vocalist Maynard James Keenan, puts on a show. You can see that he becomes the song with his movements and his performance. You can also watch the Drum Cam to Pnuema, so you can see exactly how technical and how great of a drummer Danny Carey is. Although I recommend listening to the song first.
Now I'm going to have to watch it again with my wife, who is also a major Tool fan. Since she also has her Master in Psychology, her input should either confirm my analysis of the video or make me feel dumb :/
Either way, I'll probably leave another comment with mine and her interpretation. After that, I'll read some of the other comments and google search it as well. The band has gone out and said that they rather have the listener interpret the lyrical meaning to their songs. so I'm going to assume he also meant that about their music videos too.

Sober is from 2 view points, that of the addicted and that of the addiction.
You might change your view on a few verses of the song if you listen to it with that in mind.
Also to take note of, the addict is asking why it isn't it ok to be intoxicated, why cant we not be sober.
For some they can only derive pleasure from being intoxicated, it might be their only form of expression.
But that is a double edged sword. Society shuns and outcasts addicts.
Each time it will take just a little more to get the same feeling.
Each time the pleasures of sober life will dull slightly more till you no longer can see it as pleasure.

Tool is a journey and they are not always obvious. They have songs about addiction for sure, but it's not always drugs. Tool guitarist Adam Jones explained in an interview with Guitar School: "The song and video are based on a guy we know who is at his artistic best when he's loaded. A lot of people give him s--t for that. I don't tell people to do or not do drugs. You can do what you want, but you have to take responsibility for what happens. If you become addicted and a junkie, well, that's your fault." Also 46 & 2 by Tool will change your life. Which is sort of what it is about.

Asia and BJ... Welcome to Tool! It's one of the greatest bands ever (imo) and I am convinced that you will enjoy their music a lot! As other people have mentioned, lyric videos are recommended for Tool songs, especially since the lyrics may be hard to get exactly right the first time hearing them, and they are worth it. I highly recommend Tool - Vicarious, I think you will really like that song. But it is hard to go wrong with any of their songs really. Great reaction, lots of love from Denmark!
Edit: I decipher it in the video as the box contains whatever you are addicted too. "Why can't we NOT be sober", I think the emphasis of the song is alcohol addiction: "why can't we drink forever", but as for the music combined with the video, i think it portrays any kind of addiction, that you know to be one, hidden in the box.

The music comes first, then Maynard finds the melodies, chorus and bridge parts within the musical composition, so it’s more of a vibe at first, that you catch and the lyrics become whatever they mean to you. To my knowledge... Maynard has never explained the deep meaning of any of their songs. Nothing is in the box, because in the end we often obsess about nothing.. and the addiction is often the smoke, but the real “problem” or “hurt” is the fire and lies deeper in our psyche and sometimes we never find it. And no matter what the cost... we often end up chasing something that’s not even there... In my opinion. ✌🏼

I usually don't pay close attention to the lyrics of Tool songs. I am typically more into the music but this song is deep with the lyrics. To me this song is written from the perspective of addiction talking to an addict struggling with sobriety. It's like "What's so great about being sober? MFer, why can't we not be sober?"
