Brother…..TOOL ARMY welcomes all. Once you go down the wormhole, you can’t go back, hang on for the ride. I have suffered from mental illness for my whole life. Tool’s music helps makes sense of the crazy world.
You'll be hard pressed to find a band that's more authentic and genuine to themselves and their music than Tool. Its one of the main reasons why their live shows are such a cathartic experience.
1993. The year I recorded the official video off a chart show, on a TDK VHS cassette. "Why can't we not be Sober, why can't we start this over?" Andy Wood of Mother Love Bone couldn't perform sober. The song was about him. He passed away in 1990.
Ah, I remember the talk of his death back in the grunge days. And one of the things stopping me from becoming sober was the fear I wouldn’t be able to perform with my band on stage.
Great reaction vid. Totally understand you prefer live performances or videos, but man, you won't regret listening to their studio stuff. Tool is on another level. You're not done getting goosebumps. Try "Descending" off their new album. Cheers!
The Patient , the Grudge , the Pot + a few other songs always deliver goosebumps for me to this day . I discovered them through the song Undertow back in 92 , quickly bought the CD & went to their European shows . One of the top 5 best bands i saw on stage in the mighty 90's ( with Kyuss , Monster Magnet , RATM , Porno For Pyros or Smashing Pumpkins ) .
Hey my brother I’m glad you’ve been sober I’m still working on it it’s a little too late stage for cirrhosis too much heroin and alcohol I’m proud of you keep up the good work
Hell yeah man! First, congrats on your sobriety brother. That's incredible. I'm so happy I came across your reaction video. Ive been a TOOL fan for over 30 years now, and that video gives me chills everytime I watch it. Your reaction is exactly why I watch these kinds of videos. Thanks brother!
The wailing of the guitar sends you into this uncomfortable state and then Maynard starts his part of the performance, conveying feeling through his movements and actions. I think it's brilliant.
73 yr old recovering alcoholic addict, TOOL fanatic. Here are the lyrics in case you haven't read them yet. You will understand better. Yea I still get chills from this. It grabs you in that place you carry with you. Live 3 times and incredible.
Maynard did not keep that Mohawk hair style + Orange Pijamas dress up for many years - except for the 92 - 94 period i think . I saw them 3 times during that phenomenal 90's period when they emerged on European Festivals (in Belgium for my case ) . I could observe that the public at the time was shocked at his way of singing , movements on stage + the strong musical metal prog style displayed . It was unique to discover and exciting to experience .
You should listen to more TOOL, they are just the biggest Rock Band around these days. Seen them 10 times in my life and the show they put out today is just amazing. They are able to take you on a trip without using drugs. In fact I was high on weed last time I saw them and I was very close to being to much. Greets from Germany! Stay safe!
Tool is a very unique band. Showed my friend a few songs he didnt like it said it made him angry and i told him not to be angry but to let it out and after a few months a showed him a couple more and he loved it
I’m not an addict in the traditional way, but I really resonate with this song as the ‘highs’ of mania in bipolar disorder are pretty much the same as many narcotics and some people intentionally make themselves manic because they like how it feels or only feel creative when ‘high’. It’s dangerous because it can last for weeks and like alcohol and drugs your thinking is severely impaired. I have done this in the past and regretted it! It’s really really tricky when your brain makes it’s own drugs. Thankfully (I guess?) my highs have been mixed episodes lately (symptoms of mania and depression simultaneously) and that is very very unpleasant so I’m doing my best to keep myself steady to avoid it.
My only suggestion is do the studio version first. The videos are way too distracting, unless you understand song completely. Another great reaction, welcome brother.
I completely agree. The videos usually are very distracting from the song. You will spend most of your time trying to tie the video to the song. I am looking forward to your journey with my favorite band. You will enjoy the trip!
I like your genuine reaction brother! Please don't do the official videos because it will take away from the reaction of the music. The video is its own separate artwork and it can be very distracting. If you want goose bumps you have to listen to the official music. There is a reason why we tell you that. Especially when you have headphones. Its a whole different experince. If you like the live videos because you want to see if the band can pull off a good show.Dont worry they can! Lol The band don't like when people bring in cameras or videos because they want the audience to be fully Immersed into the musical performance.
Thank you! The reason I want to see video is cause I've always liked reaction vids with moving images more BUT I completely get your point and might do both.
There were not any good cameras back in the day, and they were pretty underground. They did have an unofficial live recordings place back in the day, but doubt they were of this quality. Crazy nonetheless but being how popular this version is doesn't even give Tool justice. I still can't find most of the shows I went to back from '98-2003, maybe audio recordings at best.
Such an excellent song and performance! This band is pure genius! Excellent reaction! Trust me when I say, this won’t be the last time you get goosebumps! 🤘🏻
Hey Danny, you said you didn't have the lyrics. Here they are for you. Maynard tends to use his music as his own therapy. Thats why a lot of the time it seems real. Because it is. There's a shadow just behind me, Shrouding every step I take, Making every promise empty, Pointing every finger at me. Waiting like a stalking butler Who upon the finger rests. Murder now the path of "must we" Just because the son has come. Jesus, won't you fucking whistle Something but the past is done? Jesus, won't you fucking whistle Something but the past is done? Why can't we not be sober? I just want to start this over. Why can't we drink forever? I just want to start this over. I am just a worthless liar. I am just an imbecile. I will only complicate you. Trust in me and fall as well. I will find a center in you. I will chew it up and leave, I will work to elevate you Just enough to bring you down. Mother Mary, won't you whisper Something but the past is done? Mother Mary, won't you whisper Something but the past is done? Why can't we not be sober? I just want to start this over. I’m a recovered Alcoholic. Heard Sober on the radio when I was 12 or 13 years sober. Still a fan, still sober.
Great work!
I just got 10 years sober ( in may) and I really relate to this song. It brings up memories and actually helps me remember the anguish etc!!!❤❤❤❤
Look up the lyrics and listen to it again, it will multiply your goosebumps.

I've found that applies to basically all their songs, haha

Discordance is severely underused in music in general outside a few genres tbh, that’s the good stuff
I read that Maynard wanted to portray an alcoholic in withdrawals. Hence the body movements! Amazing video.
