Maynard inhabits the “character” of the song on stage. He’s brilliant.
What's in his brain, you ask?
Genius, pure genius!
That's the million dollar question. I'm not sure anyone has been able to figure that one out yet.
Some things about Maynard, the lead singer.
- The dance is to mimic someone on drugs. His other dances are him moving like rubber. This is really old, and he stopped doing these dances though.
-This song is for a friend of the band that couldn't do anything without being high.
-Maynard is extremely smart and creates all of the lyrics. No joke, look into Lateralus and the lyrics.
-Maynard has been sober for a long time.
Thank you for reading. :D
Maynard owns a winery... he sure as fuck drinks wine.
@@mpotter9944 Well I'm talking about sober from drugs, but yeah lol.
Maynard also served the military and was top rank.
@@74artgrrl thank you for bringing me back to my hardcore tool phase from last year. Also, you sure he was top rank? I mean, if that's true, pretty cool.
Man you’ve come a long way in the rock music world to the point where you’re singing the verses of Sober by Tool haha you’re the man Mr Video
Fucking aye
He had some pajama rompers on and rocking a mohawk mullet.
He didn't need a wig back then.
He is in a onesie
just your average maynard tings
@@smolwavingsnail9028 I feel somehow blessed by your avatar and name #littleyay
@@NotBenCoultry why thank you good sir, tis rather spiffing isn't it, if i do say so myself. if one was to watch adventure time one would find one hiding in every episode. finding them all makes for a rather jolly past time i might add.
Maynard Keenan, the lead singer is from Ravenna, Ohio! He also helped form the group A Perfect Circle. Check out their song Judith sometime...shit is nasty. I'm so glad you love Tool. They are amazing.
Love the female bass player.. I think her name is Paz?
Yup Paz Lenchatin....she is amazing!
Don't forget about Puscifer. "Momma Sed" is a fantastic song, and they have so many others.
Actually A Perfect Circle is Billy Howerdel's band Maynard was one of the last to join the band
I still have a hard time watching this performance without crying. The amount of emotion he is exuding is literally breathtaking.
I could understand how he did that if he had a substance abuse problem, but to the best of knowledge he doesn't? The power of this performance is breathtaking
@@kirixen I have working ears, and VERY rarely is any live performance better than the studio version. It happens, it didn't happen here. The sound of the guitar, the timing and quality of his voice, everything is better on the studio version. To put it simply, you have a bias that's f*cking with your ears.
@@kirixen SIGH (screw off with that) "sound quality" is huge when listening to a song. I appreciate his passion, but his voice here is sh*t compared to the studio version. Agree to disagree. It was like the last tour with The Tragically Hip. The lead singer (Gordon Downie) had incredible passion in those performances, he was dying and his heart was as big as the stage. Would I listen to those versions of the songs to appreciate the artistry and sound of the singer/band? F*k no. It's like when people react to live versions of Bohemian Rhapsody. If you're telling me those versions are as good as the studio version you will demonstrate how wrong you are in this conversation.
@@kirixen Oh, looks like Mr. Video heard his fans and reacted to the official video of Bohemian Rhapsody (didn't know that when I edited my comment to you but oh sh*t do I feel vindicated in my basic point) just like he did for Brooks & Dunn's "I Believe". Why? Cuz it's a f*ckton better, that's why. The studio version almost always is.
@@kirixen Let's forget the merits of our points here for a sec. The stupid hypocrisy of that statement is staggering. Read over what you've written to me. Remember calling me an asshole because assholes tell people all the reasons why they're wrong? That's something you were doing in a FAR more patronizing "tone" than me sunshine (you're wrong and that's your right - gee, guess the conversation is over, lol) - guess that makes you an asshole by your own definition but of course that went over your head because you're the hero of your own narrative - pathetic. Get some self-awareness dude.
Listen Bro, I was a gigging drummer in a metal band. When you get on stage under those lights and in front of all those people....you are possessed!!! Believe it!
I love Tool. I’m almost 54 and still rock to them. This is my absolute favorite song by them never seen it live so thank you ❤️😎
I swear, if The Pot isn't that third Tool song in your top 3 then Imma have to come over there and kick your ass!
I kept trying to finish his sentence... "The Pot...The POT!!"...but I'm sure that's what he meant.
Tool reaction gets an instant LIKE🔥🤟🏻 Their instrumentals are art 🔥
Their videos - those are the children of Adam. He’s an artist and so many of their animated visual art is created by him. And then there is of course Alex Grey’s ridiculously amazing album cover work and stuff. But yeah - that dark, genius insanity in their videos is primarily Adam’s. :)
Yep!
I love this Video! I love TOOL! Thank you Mr.Video!! ❤🤘
I absolutely love this band & a big fan of Maynard James Keenan my 8 year old daughter loves the other band he's in A Perfect Circle
Judith is a great song
@@heatherpackard6544 yes it is my daughter loves A Perfect Circle's cover of the song When The Levee Breaks live at Red Rocks
I seen a perfect circle at a music festival and watched the headliners (smashing pumpkins) breakup on stage in the early 2000s..it was an awesome show
My son is 15 now, but when he was little he asked if he was weird because he likes older music and the kids at school were listening to the new stuff....I said, 1st of all it's ok to be weird a d you are way cooler than the sheep.. he listens to old punk mostly a d pixies, violent femmes, talking heads he also loves weird al,but most everything before the 2000's. Instead of the rap now I introduced him to slick rick, run dmc, etc. Can't wait for him to hear ghetto boys, way too young for that now
@@heatherpackard6544 my 8 year old daughter listens to the kinda music I do which is older stuff I don't listen to much newer stuff
Yes! you have to check out A Perfect Circle too, another of Maynard's bands. They are two of my son's favorite bands. Maynard's mother had a stroke and was partially paralyzed in a wheel chair for many years until she passed in 2003 and he was angry and could not understand how she still clung to her faith in The Lord no matter what had happened to her. The songs Judith, Wings for Marie and 10,000 days are some of the songs about her, some people interpret them differently, and that is ok too. That's the beauty of music. Maynard is a unique song writer and musician for sure. It took me awhile to fully appreciate his music like I do now. Great reaction Mr. Video, I love this live version of Sober. It's Brilliant!
I've seen tool live numerous times going back to 93. My absolute favorite. Keep up the good work, Mister.
This was back in the day (1993) when Maynard was still figuring out how to do the 'frontman' thing. He's taken a complete 180° over the years and now sets up near the back of the stage and lets the the music be the star of the show. He's in shadows most of the time to the side of Danny on drums while an incredible visual and audio feast floods you senses - Using Adam's art and an exquisite light/laser show along with the music, it pulls you into a trance. One of the best live shows you'll ever see.
Not possessed just animating the meaning of the lyrics... can’t wait to see you post live form an actual concert!! 😎😂 Almost 60,000 subs >strike while the iron is hott 🔥🔥😎
This is one of my all time favorite songs. It hits me in the soul! It gets me thinking about how I need to change but can never seem to take that first step.
And we thought you were gonna make us wait till Tuesday😁
Seeing Tool perfrom live isn't a concert, it's theater!
Can't go wrong with tool, but I gotta annoy ya with the band "Sevendust" until I see it man . The song "Black" is a good starting point.
Yes, yes, yes
I still jam to Black and Denial these days. I never got too far into them tho. I should prob check out more of their stuff.
@hendrixhead90 you should go get a second opinion
hendrixhead90 haha yeah they don’t belong in the same breath as tool
@hendrixhead90 clearly
I've been a rock and metal fan since the 80s and I love this! This type beat and energy is what helped me pass high school. My mom thought I was unhinged.
Thanks for doing Live reactions to tool, I think all reactors should do alot more Live stuff there is a good bit of really good live stuff on YT ! Thanks Especially the Early stuff mid 90's .
Maynard's stage energy is just pure possession by the music. I love re watching this performance over and over
Great reaction to a great song
no big deal, maynard wanted to wear his pj's that day
Adam Jones, the guitarist, makes all the videos.
Great live video, awesome reaction man!! 🙌🏻🔥
It’s hard not to 😢 during this performance... great reaction Mr. Video 👌🏼👏🏼🙌🏼👍🏼💙🇨🇦
This is one of the only ever live performances that sounds almost exactly like the live version. His voice is insane!
This song.... Man. Can't begin to tell you.... So many good times. This whole album is kick ass
The best bands and singers came out in 50s/60s/70s/80s/90s/ hands down.no autoturn just talent.🙌🔥
I love your energy and enthusiasm when you react to these bands! Just discovered your page today and I have watched about 20 of them LOL
Fun fact: Maynard actually has bad stage fright and a lot of his performances he will either have his back to the crowd or bein the darkness. I love him. He is fucking brilliant! ♥
Cool to hear Sober and Fourty are two of your fav songs. Their first two albums are still untouchable imo.
listened to this song in the dark for hours after my dad passed from alcohol related illness
Something many overlook is that most of these guys are genius level...I fortunately have seen them live many times. The singer Maynard now owns a vineyard in Arizona.
Love seeing people see this performance. Is super early for them, but they do it SO impressively... and no one can doubt that that boy can genuinely sing after that.
The original music video for Sober is trippy af!! Live they were one of the best but David Bowie with Nine Inch Nails was unforgettable
Oh Tool Sunday, but we won’t know if the trash goes out on time! Lol... keep up the great entertainment, my good sir!
nooooo we need trash updates damn it 🤣🤣
Guitarist Adam Jones is the visual artist responsible for many of Tool's videos using stop-motion animation. Alex Grey is the painter that does the acid-trip artwork on some of their albums and videos. That man is amazing you should check out his site. Lead singer Maynard James Keenan actually is also a winemaker.
Dude.
Ive been extremely depressed lately and watching ur reactions have put me in such a better mood. I love ur personality, just brightens my day.
PLEASE do a reaction to the band COLD.
they are my favorite band and hardly anyone has reacted to them.
Try
COLD - QUITE NOW
Your reaction is Freakin’ details,Emotional.Very, very genuine 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼,for real Sir.
I’ve been waiting for you to observe Maynard’s singing style live, hehe. He acts like the claymation dudes from their videos!
Ha! I spoke too soon, you just said that!
TOOL SUNDAYS!!!! 🤘 lol thank you for making up for last tuesday!
I wrote my comment before I watched this. I have seen many reactions
to this performance and you’re the first who got the same vibe I did.
We must brothers of another mother! 🎵
Hey Mr. Video - I love this video and I’ve been watching many reaction videos. You did this awhile back but I truly thank you for yours. You don’t realize it or maybe you do. You’re leaving the video on more than you usually do. You are in a trance and this dude is making you feel it. (Waiting for my whipping post video reaction) just the song before you see these boyyz
Saw these guys live in the 90's and it really is that electrifying!
this is one of the live reactions we've been waiting for. along with van halen "eruption solo live without a net", rammstein "du hast live ", korn "woodstock 99", hendrix "hey joe live". this one cool to see aint it ?
Bruh - best tool reaction ever hands down. “Its hard to be sober, you know that” haha truth
Maynard goes crazy on stage, you should check out the 1996 Glass House performance. They debuted a lot of songs from Aenima at that show for the first time, and they killed it.
This gig is a big part of what put the band on the map. This is right about when their first EP came out
Tool is my favorite! Saw them live in Tulsa. I previously commented saying you should react to 3 Libras by A Perfect Circle (same front man as Tool). Another good one by A Perfect Circle with a strong message is Noose. Happy reacting!
I’m also trying to get sober I’m currently at 3 weeks. It nice to see someone else who is also on this journey. BTW my favorite song from Tool
It's been awhile since I heard this song. great radio thank you! 👍❣️
I clicked on this so fast. I'm like dude fin trip on Maynard in his lil pink longjohns😅 "The Pot" !!
The first time I heard this song and saw the video back in the 90s, I was tripping on acid. Pretty interesting way to be introduced to Tool.
He used to get such bad stage fright that he had to create a character in order to perform so that it wasn't him performing. That's why he eventually started performing from the side by danny
Brother, your content is great. It’s a mixture of thoughtfulness and comedy
Just keep in mind this them in the early 90s. How they perform and execute their performances now is on a different plane.
Im right there with you on this being one of my top tool songs🖤
Been waiting for you to do this video since you discovered tool great react per usual bro
My man: "What's in his brain?"
Maynard James Keenan: "Yes."
To see Maynard in an entirely different light, check out the full video for the song "Conditions of My Parole" by Puscifer (his third band).
what.a.performance! how about that pink shorts unitard. RESPECT! seriously, his dedication to the music is unassailable.
Please redo ALL of your Tool videos with headphones and lyrics on hand. I'm still gonna watch all of your existing Tool videos, but the quality of your videos jumped to a new level with the headphones.
You’re picking some great songs. I love it.
the lead singer has a side project called A Perfect Circle. check out their song Judith!
I don't know if you watched any vocal coaches react to this song, but they all talk about his posture. They all recommend standing tall to ensure you can get enough air in the diaphragm. Give a couple of those a watch, and check the replies. The gist of it though, to whet your appetite is simply him embracing the song. He's a showman, just like you said. He also has crippling stage fright so you won't find too many live concert videos where he is out front like that. This song and remastering of it is a treat for sure.
ok i just found you tonight 11/11/2020. i watched you react to Black Betty an hour ago. Then i found your TOOL play list..TOOL is my favorite band... . 4 videos in and you are reacting to Sober. The fact that you are able to pick up on his characterization on stage. You recognize its a character, and you visually start putting the pieces together... You can see your brain goin and your eyes get wide as it finally dawns on you; this Maynard is fucking brilliant!!! Oh dear lord i like you.. I like you cause your obviously open to different the flavors of music doing react vids. But you know good shit, brilliant shit, and oh my fucking god thats brilliant shit when you hear it!!! Well god bless you sir i am now a fan and subscriber to your channel! And as i write this comment. I am watching you react to Rhiannon, and my very very much loved Stevie my Heroine and sister Phonecian-(i.e. Phoenix AZ native) You just killed me!!! Im slain! I love you you are fucking awesome, your funny as shit, and you had me at BRILLIANT!! XOX
There's a band called Sixx A. M. Founded by Nikki Sixx, who died TWICE from heroin overdose. They do a song called "Life is beautiful" written by Sixx. You really should watch the live version. The lyrics include " nothing like a trail of blood to find your way back home"..
"Tool songs you gotta be or you'll slip into some trance you didn't intend to"
I love TOOL “ Swamp Song”
That boy grinding see you at the top brother!!! 👍🏻🎶🔥
Love that you know the words so well.
One powerful live performance.
I love Tool. Sober is about addiction told from the viewpoint of addiction
I’ve listened to a lot of tool, first time for me seeing them live. Kinda odd, but a good experience. Love your mimic, hand shaking with a fatty . 😎
Love that you love tool keep up the content!!
Love Tool❤
You seem like a fun dude to hang out with. Keep keeping it real.
I want to get a pink onesie to wear around town....
I was at one of their first shows ever at a loft space in Hollywood in 91.
Teez was just singing your praises on his live feed. You guys gotta do some reacts together. Maybe he can help you get your trash out on time 😂
And that carpet lol
What's in his brain, Mr. V? Experience. Before he was in Tool, Maynard had basically lived enough for several people. Cross-country and wrestling in high school, West Point graduate, military mapmaker (while training for the military, he broke the old records, and set new ones, of one of the bases he was appointed to during it's annual triathalon), managing the merchandise advertising at a Boston pet store. The man is a beast, and an inspiration to all who care to look into his history. Still loving the reactions, bro, and still can't wait for the next. Keep calm, carry on, spiral out, and keep going! 🤘😁🤘
Again A banger of a video man! Keep up the grind!
He's not on drugs, he's just acting and singing the part of an alcoholic.
Think for a moment about what the addict in a person looks like. Not the whole person - just the tortured addicted side - the one that would gouge their own eyes out for their vice. The one who pushes otherwise good people to steal from and even hurt those they love. Now think of that persona at the forefront holding all that’s good hostage inside. You can see all of the helplessness staring out at you from his eyes.
That is what Maynard is projecting to me. Perfectly. Tragically and beautifully.
I'd love to see you react to Primus... so many songs to choose from, but I'll say to do American Life. Tool and Primus tour together and Les Claypool is probably the best bass player out there. Very unique style.
Found you about two weeks ago and am loving it
The music video for this song was a trippy claymation video actually all their videos are trippy as hell.
I can't wait to see you react to this!!
You continue to knock me off my feet my friend
Crazy story...in the summer of 95 i was about to be 18yo and got home from a music fest,i found a VHS that to this day i have no idea how it got in to my bag and it had this concert recorded on it,that is how i got introduced to Tool.
“TOOL songs you gotta breathe because you accidentally slip into some trance you didn’t mean to slip into” 😂 FACTS!!
Singing 101 is posture and air flow. For him to sound like that hunched and contorted is..I don't even know what..😳
@codimis clearly he figure out a way around it but generally speaking that is not how singing works and if you are "trained" one of the first things they beat into you is posture. Stand tall, stand straight, don't constrict your diaphragm. That's where all the air flow comes from.
knotaneedey agreed. I’ve watched a lot of vocal coaches react to this video and they are all in awe of how he sings like that in that position!
I don’t know if anyone’s ever mentioned it but Maynard and Danny were both in Green Jello (later changed jello to jelly) before they created TOOL. Little Pig was their only hit.
I was closing out youtube to turn on my own music and saw a tool live reaction so I had to open back up and come check it out.
Ok sorry I couldn't find this at first but I'm here for it thank you
This is one of the best songs ever written in this Genre!! The singer is way out there but passionate!! ~ Love this song!! This is one song I'd say, "The studio version is best!!" I however always love live versions if recorded and performed well. \m/
@ mr video, have you ever listened to the "beastie boys"? Also I know you did "red hot chili peppers", you should go way back and do the older stuff.. thanks for being you,you are an honest and transparent man.. love from the dirty south, Louisiana in the house.Ps...I would love for you to do Bad Brains " sacred love" I think it'd hype you up
