  • I paint the view overlooking Loe Pool in casein paints. Casein is a new opaque medium to me and I have enjoyed trying it out en plein air in my recent sketchbooks. James Gurney inspired me to try it after watching some of his videos on his awesome channel.
I'm painting onto ordinary drawing paper in my sketchbook using water to mix with the paint. I only use 2 brushes for my sketches - a flat and a round. My mixing palettes are old pencil tins which are flat and easy to carry in my backpack when working outdoors - they didn't cost anything either!
    Colours used are:
    Yellow Ochre
    Cadmium Yellow
    Cadmium Red
    Ivory Black
    Cobalt Blue
    Titanium White.
The sketch in the video took around 25 minutes in real time to complete. It was great fun and I really enjoyed painting the late afternoon light and listening to the birdsong.

Love your sketches with casein paint. I'm inspired to try them for outdoor sketching. Andrew, I really enjoy watching your plein art jaunts in Cornwall. Miss Cornwall so much!

Thanks Cheryl - the casein paints are great fun (although they dry very fast - when we get some sun!) I find them very good for outdoor work. Glad you enjoy the outdoor painting sessions. I should have another painting video ready for the weekend. This time at Poltesco on the Lizard looking towards Bass Point. All the best - Andrew

Nice painting Andrew! I haven't heard of the Casein paint before. I might have to give it a try. Looks like a great spot to go and paint. Have a great day!

Thanks Justin - it dries fast and is opaque. I find it difficult to get dark darks but I really love using it outdoors. I prefer it to acrylic. All the best my friend

I've been curious about casein recently but only if it doesn't have the value shift problems that gouache has. I'm okay with it drying uniformly a bit brighter, but do the lights dry darker and darks dry lighter and is it as significant as guoache?

It’s quite similar to gouache. I find it difficult to get very dark darks. It is better than gouache for layering on multiple layers of paint though as it dries permanent. I like it but it is quite expensive
