  • This video shows you what I'm packing for Casein plein air painting kit. Normally I paint with oils, but wanted to extend my plein air painting options. The idea is to carry the kit with my oil painting gear to offer me the chance for some quick color sketching/painting. I'm using a tablet case to set up the system...it seems slim enough. I'm looking forward to testing it in my next outdoor adventure.
Thank you for watching the video.

Interesting timing Bruce. I am currently doing much the same thing. While I am an oil painter I decided I need a way to paint in a sketchbook that doesn't require all the things I need for oils. So I am putting a kit together except I am going to try gouache. Good luck.

Thanks. I hope it becomes fluid to use and not cumbersome. I really want to have a couple of different ways to express myself outside.

Great setup Bruce, I found if you know what your going to paint for that day. Less is more I found, Its good to see you mixing up the creativity. Im in the process changing my style and its opening a exciting journey for me but the old habits try to kick in but Im getting there。 Luv your cat also👍

Hey, Bruce- I don’t bring my Shivas outside yet. I figure that when most of the tubes are half used-up they will all fit in the kit. Or there are empty paint tubes from the usual suppliers. Even the little 22ml tubes hold enough for a few studies.

Hi Bruce, Great video. Since I’m trying to learn gouache this was helpful to see what I need to try plein air. Can’t wait to see a video of you trying this set up out. Cute cat by the way ❤️

Hi Terry- Thanks! I was going to try it today, but the wind is CRAZY right now. I'll get there :)

Hi Bruce! I’m just trying casein and I’m having a weird green residue on my brushes that doesn’t wash without using soap, it also colours my light colours… just wonder if you had that too? I’m not sure if it’s just one of the colours (I’m suspicious of the pthalo green)
Love the kit! I really like the bag.

Hi...sorry for the late reply. I've never had that happen when I've used my casein paint....nor have I heard of anyone else. I suspect it's the green thalo. Very strong pigment. Try washing your brush very well.

I love painting gear videos!! Nice new camera too! I believe it’s pronounced Shee-va (he’s a Hindu deity). I struggle with taking too much stuff when I travel or go out to paint, so these little tips are useful. Looking forward to your next video.

Hi Hunter - Thanks for the pronunciation lesson :) It's funny....the one thing I forgot to mention was a PALLETTE ! ...ha ha. Glad you liked it.

I watched James Gurney afterwards and thought about the pallete too - one really needs a list or a mental walkthru of a complete setup!

Yes...embarrassing to forget :) BUT...I was thinking about everything after the video and it popped into my head to find a way to use my Guerrilla Painter Box ( my go to oil painting box) as my "Gurney" setup. That way, I won't have to sit randomly somewhere...I could just use my oil setup and modify to use Casein. Totally unproven, but it sounds do-able...we'll see. My problem is that I could mess around looking for the perfect kit FOREVER :) ....I LOVE using my brain like that. My plan is to use a pad of palette paper cut to the size of my box....then I won't have to clean up....which is a pain.

It’s great to see others’ setups! I have an Alla Prima pochade box and I haven’t used it for mixing colours at all. I use the mid-sized stay-wet palette by Mastersons and just perch it on top of the pochade box (it has two side trays). I bungee cord that to the outside of my pochade box to travel. I also added an old thin picture frame with glass that fits nearly perfectly into it, over a cut-to-size Grey Matters paper palette. I put a shop towel wetted with clove oil in the smaller compartment of the stay-wet to keep most of my oils from drying out. I also have a mini stand up tool bag that I can put brushes & paints in that barely fits in my knapsack. I added a small level, palette knife, coloured pencil to sketch in, trash bag, pliers for stuck tubes, a small brush cleaner, big binder clips, gloves, and pre-cut shop towels (halves folded over). In the car, I’d have water and trail mix. I usually bring too many brushes and oil paint. I made a wet panel carrier out of corrugated plastic and sewed a custom shoulder bag for it. I even have a small folding canvas chair that I can sling over my shoulder. Heaven help me if I ever encounter a wild animal as I’d have to dump everything to run!

What are those brushes and here are they from? I looked, but didn't find them. Love your bag! I've never tried Casein paint before but will soon.

Hi .....thanks for checking out my video. These are from Jack Richeson. I found out about them from James Gurney's RUclips channel. The set offers just the right amount of sizes and comes in a compact size...which is perfect for plein air.

Just checked out the pad on Amazon, unfortunately in the UK they are very expensive for the hobbyist painter

Hi Oscar - It would be 25.00 US per 1/2 hour. It starts with a fact finding mission to find out what your goals are for painting and then we can set up a plan for going forward. Over time, you'll work on your paintings and them I'll critique over Skype and suggest improvements, palette colors to try, etc.
