  • The macOS Sonoma 14.1 update is causing issues for some Unsupported OpenCore Legacy Patcher 1.1.0 Mac devices that require an updated 14.1 KDK update. After installing the Sonoma 14.1 Update the Mac will be stuck at a progress bar, or Black Screen and be unable to boot back into the OS. I'll show you how to get your Mac back up and running again.
UPDATE! OpenCore Legacy Patcher 1.2.1 is live! This fixes the issues found in the macOS Sonoma 14.1 and 14.1.1 updates!
Commands in macOS Recovery to revert the root patches
    mount -uw "/Volumes/Macintosh HD"
bless --mount "/Volumes/Macintosh HD" -bootefi --last-sealed-snapshot

I would like to thank all the developers that allow those of us with old macs to update to the last operating systems. I only saw this video after starting to update my iMac 10.1 and after the fiirst restart it failed to install Sonoma 14.1. Tried a second time to install and this second time everything worked as expected and I'm now on Sonoma 14.1 on a 14 year old iMac, upgraded last year with a 1TB SSD.

@pedromonteiro6043 agreed! The devs are awesome, just think of the stress they are going through right now trying to fix the issue. They already have 1.2.0 in dev with multiple fixes! I'm glad your iMac is up and running 👍

      Hello Mr.Macintosh
I am blocked with this issue (progress bar blocked around 20%)
I tried your solution : start and hold option key, select EFI Boot, press space bar, select Recovery 14.0 (dmg), and .. nothing happened.
The screen is black and finally the Mac reboot automatically.
Can you please help me to repair the EFI Boot ?
      Thank you very much.

This didn't fix my issue. I am still stuck at about 25-30% status bar. Wifi isn't working. Will there be more direction for those with a macbook pro from 2013? Maybe my issue can be remedied with a wired dongle? Should this be ethernet to usb? Many thanks!!!

i was on 14.0 (macbook pro 13 2017) and over it I installed oclp 1.2.1 and applied the root patches but system failed, now after "mount" and "bless" I am able to boot the system, after that I downloaded KDK for 14.0 (exact build) and ran the oclp 1.1.0 but system again not bootable (strangely can't see anything related to "KDK found" durring OCLP patching), how to install back the drivers on sonoma 14.0?

I have an iMac 21.5 from 2011 and I can confirm that this works. I didn't even have Ethernet let alone Wi-fi. I reverted the patches then got Ethernet back. opencore window popped up suggesting me a newer version, installed it but got a black screen. then I typed in those commands. iMac booted up normal but again no WiFi no Ethernet, then applied post install patches after reboot. Ethernet was active, WiFi was on but no network was shown. you should go into system settings then network then select your WiFi manually.

First off, i have to say that this video and all your videos are absolutely awesome, and help a great deal! I have a strange issue that's very close to this one. I'm on a late 2013 iMac running Sonoma 14.4.1, using the OCLP 1.4.3. The computer was running laggy after reboot, so i ran the patcher and it would not let me in past the login screen in normal or Safe Mode. So i did the "bless to the last snapshot", now i don't even get to the login screen, i instead get the back screen when booting, but i can now get in Safe Mode. Really unsure what my next steps are from here? Would it be possible to run the bless to last snapshot again, or plug Ethernet into the iMac and run the patcher again, or is there a third option that i can try to resolve the issue?

Firstly, thank you once again for the detailed guide.
I bit the bullet yesterday and ended up having the Apple logo + 1/3 stuck loading bar. Tried rebooting several times with no luck. Today saw this video and solved the stuck boot problem. 2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro, had to enter safe boot and reapply the Root Patches (luckily I have a Thunderbolt ethernet adapter so there were no major issues).
So far it's all working ok. Thank you!

I have a 2016 MBP with TB and TouchID, version 1.1.0 of Opencore and 14.0 MacOS (even tried 14.1) and the patcher, when applying root patches, only detects and installs patches for: "Graphics: Intel Skylake" and "Networking: Modern Wireless" but nothing about T1 as I could see in your video. I have a collection of 20 Pros, Airs, and iMacs 2009-2020. I updated them all to 14.1 last night and today. Some went smoothly and some were hard. All were successful in the end. Two suggestions that have helped me. 1. Keep an installation of a previously working system (like Ventura) on another volume so you can always boot back to that. 2. Download the installer and build an installer disk with OCLP and then boot with that and start an install to your current installation. 14.1 sees that you are installing to 14.0 and does an upgrade. Lastly, if it hangs you can sometimes power off and restart and hold down the shift key and limp up to safe mode, install patches and then reboot. I’m surprised by the amount of variations from one machine to the next but that’s the fun right! Sometimes you just have to tinker.

Please check OCLP Troubleshooting again, because your guide is incomplete or outdated,
you didn't tell about the last very important step, to remove ".kexts" files.
    Third terminal command should be:
    cd "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Library/Extensions" && ls
"You should now see bunch of .kexts. If you only see .kexts starting with "HighPoint" and "SoftRAID", you can ignore this and just restart the system. If other kexts are found, continue.
Delete everything except for the ones that start with HighPoint and SoftRAID, by using rm -rf "kextname"
Then restart and now your system should be restored to the unpatched snapshot and should be able to boot again."

Thanks for this video! Three little notes: 1) I thought I'd prepared sufficiently by installing OpenCore Legacy Patcher 1.1.0 over Ethernet, and just in case I manually installed the KDK for 14.1 too, before upgrading from macOS 14.0 to 14.1. Still, I got the 30-40% progress bar issue while upgrading the OS, and had to boot to safe mode, which let the upgrade complete. I could then remove the root patches and reinstall them, and everything worked fine in the end. Note 2) The system is very slow at the login screen in safe mode on my unsupported MBP 15" late 2013 when entering my password. Might affect all older machines and not just mine. And note 3) If you run Boot Camp, the EFI partition might show up labeled as "Windows", but the icon is the same design as shown in the video.

iMac 15,1 upgrade via OpenCore 1.1.0 to Sanoma 14.1 failed with simple, dead, black screen result.
I followed the script in this clip (thanks) but sluggish login screen and could not get any further so last night I created a 32Gb install USB on another old Mac (OpenCore 1.1.0 specifying target 15,1 for our iMac and Sanoma 14.1) , space bar to select the install USB drive and then all worked as per normal install process.
    Now Time Machine backup!

Hi, great videos thanks so much for providing such great instruction. I followed one of your previous videos to install Sonoma on my iMac 2010 via USB, but when I clicked the EFI option in Recovery... the screen went black. I restarted but it seems that I cannot get into Recovery at all now. I've tried holding Option on restart multiple times, Option-R, resetting the PRAM, resetting the SMC, but no matter what I do it seems that I cannot get into Recovery at all. I have pulled the SSD and tried installing high Sierra onto it from a mac pro with Monterey but that was unsuccessful as Monterey is too new apparently (even with a patcher installing it direct to the SSD). I have also created a bootable USB with Monterey and also another with High Sierra, but it seems the problem is that I cannot get into Recovery or see anything on the screen when I restart, in order for me to do anything. I have even pulled both SSD and HDD, replacing the HDD with a drive I know has High Sierra on, but again, black screen no matter what I do. I have tested the keyboard, working OK, The screen does fire up as I can see LCD illumination but I do not get any options. Would you be able to suggest something else? Thank you! K

Then try to start and wait for few minutes then re boot to safe mode. Now it work then patches now ok. Lesson let update during night it will take several hours to finish updating 3 hrs minimum. Now try the suggestion in safe mode then patches. The reason takes time it removed all patches then it install new fresh Sonoma. Try to go back Sonoma 14.0 it does not allowed to downgrade. Or better wait for the latest OCLP.

My Early 2015 13" Macbook Pro was able to boot to the login screen after installing the 14.1 update but would freeze the progress at around 20%. I was able to initially boot into safe mode which 'completed' the install but would not log in completely. I was able to boot the system a second time into safe mode and install the KDK (which I downloaded prior to attempting upgrade) as well as installing root patches. The system successfully booted into macOS but OCLP was no longer working on the system. Installed OCLP once again and everything appears to be working. The overheating issue I saw on 14.0 appears to be reduced which is a positive point.

One more thing if you don’t have wifi since it needs to be root patch before you can use wifi. You can use iphone that have same apple id of your mac you can use it as a hotspot and automatically detected by mac

@@Mr.Macintosh Unfortunately no. Initially when the 14.1 patch was installed I was able to log in but I noticed my WiFi and fingerprint sensor stopped working. I did the post-install root patch after, but once the machine restarted it would not go past the login screen after I entered my password. I ended up reverting back to osx 14. I created a new usb installer with 14.1 but I'm afraid to try the update again

MacbookPro10,2 here. I had opencore patcher 1.1.0 with Sonoma 14.0 and I tried to upgrade to Sonoma 14.1 OTF and it failed. No ethernet cable, so I guess it was because of lack of Wifi. Anyway, I've had the problem and the only workaround I found was to use my TimeMachine to install my Catalina again and although I could not initiate it afterwards, then I reinstalled Sonoma 14.0 and it worked.
My question is: now I have opencore 1.1.0 in Sonoma 14.0. If I create with opencore patcher app an USB installer of Sonoma 14.1 and I use it to upgrade my Sonoma 14.0, would it fail again or doing this way may be succesful? Thank you very much.

    • @Mr.Macintosh
      @Mr.Macintosh  11 месяцев назад +1

Hello @valorn76 , the key here is the KDK. You can perform the update and it will work fine, but before you do, manually download the 14.1 KDK! the problem comes in when the patcher does not have wifi and does not patch basic wifi first so the patcher can download and install the kdk AND install "modern wifi" to totally patch. What you can do is after the update to 14.1 and are back on the desktop DONT install the root patches just yet, install the 14.1 KDK first THEN install the root patches. After a reboot you should be good to go!

Hi Mr. Macintosh, I'm wondering if the suggested fix would work if upgrade from Ventura to 14.1 failed? I used to run Ventura (installed using OCLP 0.6.4 April this year) on my late 2012 iMac 27" prior to the upgrade. I built a Sonoma 14.1 installer on USB using OCLP 1.1.0. The portion of installing from USB seemed to work but I'm not able to start my iMac when I try to boot from the hard drive. The progress bar either gets stuck at 1/3 or 1/10. I'm wondering the suggested approach only fixes upgrade from 14.0 to 14.1 or would work in my scenario as well. I appreciate your reply or any other suggestion you may have.

i must have gotten lucky, i downloaded the update, restarted, and the progress bar got stuck right as expected. So i held shift and was booting into safe mode where i kid you not, the 14.1 update continued to install as normal, then the system rebooted again this time fully booting and i just installed the root patches like normal. I don't know why my experience was more or less normal.
OH EDIT: i just noticed that when i rebooted the OCLP program itself was somehow broken and needed to be reinstalled.

2012 Macbook Pro (16gb ram, 250gb SDD, 1TBHDD). Had the stuck in about 40% progress bar problem, my solution was to boot from an external flash drive with opencore legacy patcher, select the MacOS Sonoma installed partition and then it got me to the login screen. After login screen there was a delay and a message that the "gui has crashed" (or something like that), and options to send error info to apple. i selected the ignore option and after a little while it got me to the desktop. Reapplied root patches and in the next boot all was working normal again. Hope this is useful for somebody else.
