    Yes I called the "2015 Retina MacBook" a "MacBook Air" yes that was just a small vocal error.
    Also I didn't realise that the RAM sticks were labelled 2x4GB. Bit confusing when it had both 2x4GB and 8GB written on the sticks but oh well

    The reason why it ran so poorly was likely because of the fact that it’s a computer that doesn’t support Apple’s Metal graphics API, which has been used for more and more throughout the system lately. 2012+ computers support Metal and have a way more enjoyable experience with OCLP, trust me.

    For it to work, it's best to make the installer on the target machine itself, because the installer needs to be specific to your machine, even if you choose the correct one from a list, you can still run into problems, i run Monterey on a 2012 air and it works just fine, even, with 4gb of ram. Yes they can't download macos sonoma directly, but you can use a utility called Mist, where you can download any macos version that apple has on their servers ;) so now you know. I also tried Sonoma, but it is still way to buggy, yes, even on my mom's MacBook Pro M1 Pro 16 inch

    Open Core Legacy Patcher support for Sonoma is still really early, I would guess most of these issues will be solved in the next weeks / months. Then again, maybe not, Apple has been determined to make older Macs harder and harder to support since Big Sur and Ventura / Sonoma needs some really hacky workarounds on pre-Metal GPU and early Metal GPU, without mentionning the problems with some touchpads, poor ressources management, etc. Ventura has the advantage of being a year old at that point, Open Core is pretty stable with it, but at release, it was rough.

    All 17' MacBook Pro have dedicated graphics, for example yours has the Geforce gt 330m. Also the gt 330m doesn't cook itself, you're thinking of the 2011 15" and 17" Pros with the Radeon HD 6750m and 6770m respectively.

    • @zizlog_sound
      @zizlog_sound 7 месяцев назад

      These Radeon 6xxx gfx cards were also used on the 2011 iMacs causing issues there as well. I still haven’t figured out if it were the 6750 and 6770 only or all 6 series Radeon cards.

    • @EvilTurkeySlices
      @EvilTurkeySlices 7 месяцев назад

      @@zizlog_sound the 6750m in the 21.5” iMacs generally don’t fail much, but the 6770m and 6970m from the 27” iMacs are much more susceptible to failure. Less so than the MacBook Pros, but still pretty likely. One advantage of the iMacs is that the graphics are replaceable due to being MXM. You can put a GTX 660m into them and flash it with Mac firmware to get a metal supported GPU that won’t fail. Allows you to install Mojave and Catalina and have better support in Big Sur and up.

    In the settings of OCLP, you can increase the time the OpenCore bootloader stays on the screen. I usually set it to ten seconds. As far as the grphics issues, OCLP 1.0.1 is supposed to install root patches automatically, but I suspect that you may need to reindtall them.

    I also have a 2010 17 macbook pro, use day to day, absolute beast and wonderful machine. Mine is specd out with i7-640m (doesn’t matter today so much because it’s dual core, the same as your i5, 16gb ram, gt 330m, samsung 870Qvo 1TB, planning to swap cd drive out for 2nd ssd. Installed macOS Sonoma on the older version on oclp, runed like yours. Installed Ventura, been running for over 2 months, everything works fine, the safari open after half a second after clicking it’s a day to night difference with sonoma. To be fair Sonoma=Ventura feature and feel like. Everything works, even graphics acceleration, annimations smooth. On Ventura everything’s snappy, i usually use with multiple apps open including safari+chrome, shows no signs of weekness, everything’s snappy af. Usa a lot for dy’ing, music production, office apps. 17 inch macbook pro , the best macbook pro ever made, beast. Such as an e39 m5, the fastest sports sedan ever made. Period. Everyone using 17 macbook I do recommend upgrading to Ventura.

    Hey, just an F.Y.I that the 2010 17" MacBook Pro DOES indeed support 2x8GB 1066/1067 DDR3 SODIMM Ram. A couple reasons why you weren't able to see 16GB active. 1. You simply had a bad RAM stick. 2. For 16GB to work, you need to get 1066/1067 MHz RAM (certain older MacBooks will not work with higher clocked RAM. 3. (most obvious) It Needs an EFI Update.
    I assure you, 16GB works. Apple will state that only 8GB will be recognized, but it's actually 16. I have 16GB 1066MHz Dual Channel in my Mid 2010 Polycarbonate MacBook, which only was seen AFTER an EFI update.

    This installation would have gone smoother if you had first zapped the PRAM before starting the EFI Partition on your USB stick. Also, when the USB drive booted up the MacOS Recovery the very first thing that you should have opened was Disk Utilities and erased itthe internal Hard Drive and formatted it as APS and as a GUID partition map BEFORE moving on to the Sonama OS installer. This is whats known as a 'clean installation' and what should be done on hard drive except with exception of an upgrade from currently installed OS software to a nerwr version of the OS in which case the drive already has the proper formatting and partition mapping installed on the internal drive. Personally I was amazed that you didn't even know to do this because it has been Computer 101 practically since the invention of what we know today as a hard drive. Prior to hard drives applications were boot loaded on to computers using magnetic tape or floppy drives that didn't need to be formatted when installed. Hard Drives formatted for modern MacOS computers and the Hard Drives formatted for modern Windows PC's are not compatable with each other. The MacOS hard drive APS format is not natively recognized by a Windows PC and a Hard Drive that has been formatted as NTSF for a Windows PC can not be recognized by a MacOS booted from an APS drive. I believe the only reason that you were at all able to see both the Windows and the MacOS system software running at the same time on the same drive was due to the internal drive booting from the installed Open Core Legacy Patcher's UFI Boot partition. What you should do is shutdown your MacBook and plug in your Open Core Legacy Patcher Sonama USB drive and restart and hold down the Optin, Apple, the P and the R keyboard keys while the Mac boots until you hear the startup chime to zap the PRAM clearing the onboard memory before installion. I've found that if you continue to hold those keys down til you hear a second louder chime is more effective at clearing the memory. After the second chime continue to hold down the option while releasing the other keys and until the MacOS Recovery loads and then you can install Sonoma. During the OS installation process your Mac will reboot several times during the instal which is normal although on some of the older Mac models the installation may stall or stop completely during any one of those restarts but I found that if I restart the Mac while zapping the PRAM until the second chime it will continue the install to completion. I am currently running Sonoma on an early 2008 MacPro.

    You didn't re-apply the thermal compound on the CPU in this age old device, it makes this run hot, and throttles the CPU and makes it perform bad.
    And I believe some connection pin on one of the RAM slots might be broken or so.

    Your 120GB SSD is practically useless since it was probably heavily used on your previous machine, and the 120GB doesn't have much NAND chips. I would suggest to replace it with a 500GB version (if possible, with TLC NAND ad not QLC)

    Sonoma is just a bit goofy in general. Ever since upgrading to Sonoma on my AMD hackintosh when I sync my music to my iPod video it shows the album art completely messed up.

      I agree. I installed Sonoma on a mid 2010 MacBook but I wasn't thrilled with the results or wanting to risk the possibility of the headaches involved with having to deal with future and as yet undiscoved bugs on a patched and unsupported computer running a new and largely untested Operating System version(alyhough I trust that frequently updating the legacy patcher software will likely remedy most issues going forward). I decided my best move at the present was to install OS Monterey because it has been well tested and is stable and will still receive security updates from Apple for some time.

    It's good to also show things that go wrong, this stuff is never easy going. One thing I do not understand: what is it that you did differently at 11.30 for the Sonoma EFI to show up on the boot screen, not just the Win EFI ? You say "I forgot to do something" but what was that ? Thank you very much.

    I've had the issue before with regards to dedicated GPUs that fail... I had one with a 320M (I think) and I had to force it (in software) to always use the integrated GPU, otherwise it would kernel panic whenever it felt like, including when scrolling through a Spotify playlist!
    Also, depending on how this goes, I still have one Unibody machine left, I might try forcing a more modern OS onto it... It has 10.13 High Sierra, the maximum it can take, and sadly even basic applications such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Spotify, no longer support 10.13!

    Why the heck did you do Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for macOS 14 Sonoma??? Since 10.12 Sierra or 10.13 High Sierra apple has been using APFS.

    I feel like anything older than 2012 is not worth it to keep for OCLP and trying to use them today.
    And that's just because of Metal.
    My MacBook Pro 15" mid-2012 non-Retina runs actually good on OCLP, it has i7, 16GB or RAM and 2TB SSD so yeah

    5:38 its an 8Gb Kit. It LITERALLY says 2x4Gb on each of those Sticks. Thats pretty much normal especially on these days for Dual Channel kits to show the whole capacity and in smaller Numbers the "actually" size for each Stick. So no 16Gb its 8Gb and even if it wont Support 16Gb it probably still will as my 2008 only Supports 4Gb but it came with 2Gb and I put in 2x4gb and got the whole 8gb. :)
