I have to say, between you and Mr. Mac, I give you guys a 10 out of 10 for knowledge and know-how. When a new ver of everything comes out I usually go ahead with the upgrade even if it trashes my system. I actually enjoy going through the repair procedure. My 2012 MBP is not my only MAC and I love keeping it "on the bleeding edge" 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I didn't upgrade to Sonoma, just to Catalina. After updating Open Core patcher and "rooting", my progress bar would get stuck at around 15%-20%. Your procedure worked flawlessly. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this. I just upgraded to Sonoma on my 2102 MBP with no issues, from Ventura which was also unsupported. Nice to have this as a backup so I don't panic if it happens on subsequent upgraders. :)
Hi, after upgrading from 12.6.2 to 12.7.5, I do have the same problem as you with my 5,1. Which KDK Version did you choose? On github I can only find versions back until MacOS 13. Thank you very much in advance for your reply!
Thank you. I was able to rescue my old 2013 MBP Retina (1st gen) after a failed OPLC update to 2.0. No more OPLC updates for me, the old 1.5.5 works just fine on this machine.
First of all, I want to thank you. I'm hardly a tech guy but your videos have helped me massively with updating my old macs including my 2010 Mac Pro 5,1 cheesgrater and all has been working well until last week with the Mac Pro. I saw this video months ago and then had this problem happen after a PRAM reset last week and it's been driving me nuts. Here's what happened: The problem started after I was prompted to install OCLP update 1.4.3 (from 1.4.1). It wouldn't start up so I reset the PRAM. Then I got the “no entry sign” on my OCLP Monterey 12.7.3 drive (NVMe) so I switched out my RX580 for the mac 5770 graphics card [so I could use the option key] and I removed all hard drives and connections. I did all the steps in this video and all seemed to be going well until it restarted. The progress bar appeared for a second and then said 'your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up” and then it showed a progress bar but not moving. I shut it down after a few min, tried again and I got a gray screen with a flashing “?" (and shut itself off). Then I rebooted again holding option and selected EFI and I got the "your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up." error again. Holding Shfit would not let it boot into Safe Mode either. Sounds like a Mac kernel panic issue like you said here, but I cannot find the KDK version for Monterey on GitHub to do the manual install. Maybe the EFI is corrupted? Maybe it’s an NVMe issue and I should try the repair on the backup SSD in a sled on bay 1 (although everything was working perfectly with the NVMe on a sonnet pci-e card)? I use this computer for music production and was able to go back and use Mojave (NVMe on sonnet card) for now to transfer old sessions to my laptop but I really love using Monterey on the Mac Pro because it has been very fast and stable and I can use the latest plugins and programs. Any advice on what I should do to fix this? I’ll keep searching through your video library for an answer. Thank you! 🙏🏼
Hi, NVMe might be the issue, I recommend having a small SSD with Monterey for backup reasons… but for the future there’s no need to update OCLP when still running Monterey - the new versions are meant for Sonoma updates
@@JessiesFlying Hi Jessie, thanks for the quick response. I took your advice and tried everything using the SSD this time, after doing the terminal I get the same results on restart, same "your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up" error and then Apple logo with progress bar that does nothing, just freezes. As far as the 1.4.3 update, it keeps popping up which is why I went ahead to do that update. Is there a way to turn off those notifications if I can get this running again? I'm not sure if I can get this to work since I cannot seem to get neither nvme or ssd to start up. I've been searching for answers online for days and if you're not sure, sadly, it might be time to get a new computer. Thanks again for all your videos and advice! 🙏🏼
@@loslobosjr did you try NVRAM reset 3x in a row? There is a setting to switch off the check for new version or simply don’t allow the background process
@@JessiesFlying Hi Jessie, sorry for the late response, I was out of town and got back yesterday. Today I took out all the hard drives and peripherals on the pci-e slots. I installed the RX580 card and only the OCLP Monterey nvme on the sonnet pci-e card. I did a PRAM reset and let it go 3x this time (the other attempts I only did 2x) and it worked! Why does it work after 3x instead of 1x or 2x? I'll remember to do this again if I have the issue again. Thank you!
Between this video and your others I finally got my mid 2010 macbook patched with monterey and wifi fixed so THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Informative and concise videos with excellent resources. Liked and Subscribed, Thanks again!
8:13 I have multiple users on the iMac 5K 2017 and selectively boot from the Fusion drive for Sonoma 14.0 on EFI OCLP 1.0.1, or external T7 SSD for Sonoma 14.1. The Sonoma 14.1 on EFI OCLP 1.1.0 has not been stable after boot up, sometimes, it just stuck and t 8:13 he cursor didn’t move (with or without lightning cable), and/or the keyboard LED didn’t respond, a power button restart would be needed. A réinstallation of OCLP from the Installer or from the internal Fusion drive can solve the problem while burning my life for another half-an-hour. Eventually, it looks stabilised but every cold boot takes at least 15~20 minutes to successful logged-in to a user with admin rights. It’s so unstable and I’m not sure the imac will work after the next power off. So, I’ve decided to wait for OCLP 1.1.x or 1.2.x for Sonoma 14.1.x for other unsupported Macs.😅
FYI: rest in the comments: The OCLP 1.2.0 release a few days ago fixes this. this hack/trick is not needed any longer ;) The patcher now detects if you update your macOS via OTA update, and ask to download the correct KDK for your version
Wow, this works great on OCLP 1.4.3 that bricked my MacBook Pro and wouldn't log in afterward. Thank you for saving me a couple hours and reinstallation of osx :)
Firstly, thanks for the video. These kind of videos explaining things are invaluable. My issue, the latest OCLP 1.3.0, made my previously working MacBook Air on Venture (OPLC 1.2.1) hang on the progress bar, never finishing to boot. I could get into it Mac again with booting from Ventura install, and opening terminal. If I delete the kexts in /Volume//Library/Extensions (apart from Raid and HighPoint ones), I can get it to boot without root patches. I then re-downloaded the OCLP 1.2.1, and re-applied the patches. Still hangs on boot progress bar. So then tried your KDK download for 13.3.1 and re-applied root patch. Still hangs on boot progress bar. (I have internet access via wifi even without root patch btw). I cannot boot safe mode (holding shift), hangs in same place. So it seems that 1.3.0 OCLP breaks something, which I am sure will impact many others quickly. Still working on fixing it myself somehow, but looks like you may need to prep another video soon!! Any tips welcome.

Hi, I recently upgraded to OpenCore Legacy Patcher 1.0.2 on Sonoma 14.0. However, after rebooting, I see the Macintosh HD logo, but then the screen stays black without any further actions. Do you have any solutions or suggestions? I would greatly appreciate your help.
To the guys that have problems installing the root patches with Open Legacy Core, you don't install the latest version of OpenLegacy Core if your model is not mentioned, because it causes stuck on boot. Follow the suggestion of Jessie when he talks about install KDK of your version. After that, install the previous version of OpenLegacy Core (the correct for me was 1.2.0), and root patch again. It will work again. We need to wait the next version of OpenLegacy Core when it will be compatible for our model. Then we can install the MacOs update. Hope it helps. When you download the update the legacy player should download appropriate KDK automatically if needed. After every update another root patch is necessary and then the (maybe) needed KDK is already installed

I urgently need a tip on what to do now. Perhaps important: I updated the Open Score Patcher to 1.5.0 before the Monterey update. Could this be the reason?
Hello Jessie, I have now tried the older 1.4.2 version, unfortunately nothing has changed. A couple of times now my working patched system has a meltdown and shows a white background and/or runs really slowly. I tried to update/reapply patches to fix the graphics drivers (thinking that is the issue) but next reboot it hangs after the login screen (progress bar just whirls). I've resorted to wiping the hard drive and starting over from the usb installer. That works for a while and then gives up. Might there be some auto update that needs disabling?

@JessiesFlying, thanks for the vid. This did not work for me. After following the tutorial of getting the latest KDK did not work either. I never had an issue of the Volume not mounting. My issue was that at the point of rebooting, after ejecting the installer USB, the system would freeze after I logged on to the system. On my MacBook Air6,1, upgrading from System Preferences did not work. Upgrading from USB did not work. What worked for me was to wipe the entire hard drive. Then do a clean install of OS14.1. After the clean install, I did not have to install anything else. Then I proceeded to back up from Time Machine.
@@realStefanLowe not necessarily - do an update from USB (same procedure, but it will update when there is a macOS already installed) and the root patches are also applied automatically...

Not sure how relevant my current problem is to the video but… now I’m back into the Mac following the instructions but when I come to the part where I search for the KDK package I don’t have one for my version. Im guessing this is because I’m running Monterey and what bought me to this video was being stuck at Boot after root patching (I updated OCLP because it was nagging me on the daily and didn’t use my brain first!!). Is the KDK bit not relevant to my OS? Dortania only gives up to OS 13 on that page… So my problem now is that I have a Mac Pro 5.1 2010 running Monterey and it is logging in fine after removing the root patching with Terminal, But, I have no WiFi and only LAN. And no Bluetooth Magic Mouse connection. I have also downgraded to OCLP 1.2.1 (I did this in an attempt to solve the WiFi issue and looking at other videos, but it hasn’t worked, in fact the root patches from older versions still remove the WiFi and Bluetooth!) apologies that this is not exactly related to the video as I’m not upgrading OS, I just updated OCLP without thinking and messed up my system!! 😂
There is no KDK need for macOS prior Ventura. So root patching should bring WiFi and Bluetooth, did you try NVRAM reset after patching? Check out my other videos for more details 👍
@@JessiesFlying Hi again. :) The NVRAM reset enebled me to do root patching without crashing the Mac afterwards, so some progress! But strangely it still cut off both the WiFi and the LAN connections from working, so I had to once again remove the root patch. So currently I can work my Mac with LAN but no WiFi or Magic Mouse ability. (I tried the manual WiFi connection by typing it into “other”, but no joy sadly). I wonder if I can try something else or perhaps should do a fresh install with opencore like the first time I set it up?
I downloaded a fresh copy of Sonoma 14.4.1 on an external hard drive and it shows up on efi boot but when I try to go into recovery mode I get a blank screen. I've reset nvram but no wifi still. Is there something I need to add to the external hard drive to get the recovery mode to show up ?

Here's what happened:
The problem started after I was prompted to install OCLP update 1.4.3 (from 1.4.1).

@@JessiesFlying Hi Jessie, sorry for the late response, I was out of town and got back yesterday. Today I took out all the hard drives and peripherals on the pci-e slots.
Thanks a lot for the detailed step by step explanation… really great! 👍

To the guys that have problems installing the root patches with Open Legacy Core, you don't install the latest version of OpenLegacy Core if your model is not mentioned, because it causes stuck on boot. Hello All, I’m struggling here with a late 2012 Mac Mini with Sonoma 14.2.1. After root patching machine won’t boot with progress bar just a little bit across. I got the same issue, it did all normal updates on OCLP but first re-boot didn't work, and also if I try go to recovery 14.0 it's a blank screen. Don't seem to have an option to fix this on any videos out there. Pants!
Same problem here, an update prompted, and after rebooting stuck on 1/3 progress, when trying to access recovery there only a black screen
so you updated macOS or OCLP (it's still on v1.2.1 as far as I know since 3 weeks....?)
Fortunately I have many SSDs so I did a emergency recovery, installed what seemed like 3 OS updates before I could get to run OCLP and then create a USB installer for Sonoma, which would then I could swap back the SSD (now could do this in 2minutes) and get to the console to remove the offending OCLP files, then do update to Somona, then apply root patches which is now sweet at a nut. However, I found the currently latest photoshop (I pay for this) does not work, need to go back one revision.
Thanks for your response! I had upfated to the new oclp 1.2.1, not Sonoma yet (still was on 14.0) and then oclp prompted me to reboot which I did and that’s when it got stuck.
After trying everything and almost giving up, this worked for me:
I had to plugged into an ethernet port.
Restarted holding down command - R
It actually went into internet recovery mode this time
cleared the HD in disk utility and then it showed up as an option
Downloaded/installed MAC OS X
OS was so old, safari barely worked but managed to update to Mac OS Ventura
Downloaded OCLP 14.1.1 and put in applications
Created a download installer on a USB (last time did it on a partition of my SSD, not a good choice for obvious recovery purposes)
Downloaded Sonoma (if youget an error part waythrough just click OKAY and it will continue restarting/downloading

I’ve tried doing your “last snapshot” step and I can get back into EFI/Sonoma but the drivers aren’t working (internet) like it was after my original root patch when I first installed it on 2017 iMac. I’ve tried installing the newest root patch, and I’ve tried installing the original root patch again. Still can’t get past the 1/3 complete progress bar after the root patch + reboot. Any help would be appreciated!!😊
Does safe mode help?
Unfortunately I couldn’t get it to enter into Safe Mode. I just joined your Discord using my same username and asked an updated question there.
@@SpeakTruthKindly hopefully someone has a hint
A couple of times now my working patched system has a meltdown and shows a white background and/or runs really slowly. I tried to update/reapply patches to fix the graphics drivers (thinking that is the issue) but next reboot it hangs after the login screen (progress bar just whirls). I've resorted to wiping the hard drive and starting over from the usb installer. That works for a while and then gives up. Might there be some auto update that needs disabling?
Absolutely, switch off all automatic updates and also the bottom switch for security updates
After select the recovery disk my screen gets black! does not show the languages selection screen....What should I do?
then your recovery partition might be damaged.... did you try safe mode already?
Thank you for your help! Yeah but it won't work :/
@@proyectospc5434 then it seems you need a fresh install...
hey Jessie! i'm on Ventura on a MBP 2012. it was working fine until i updated OCLP then did the same with the Root Patch. now loading bar reachs the middle and stops when booting. i've already installed the KDK that corresponds to my OSX version, but all goes the same if i turn off my laptop. i read you have to re-install an older version of OCLP to revert this in one of your comments. is that right? if so, how can i do that?
Can you boot somehow into macOS (safe mode)? Then simply install older version, reboot and then install root patch and reboot again
@@JessiesFlying, do i need to install OCLP's older version or OSX's? because i didn't update my OSX but the OCLP + Root patch
@@nicolasarias9288 if you can boot into safe mode you can try to install older OCLP
@@nicolasarias9288 Buenas, tengo el mismo problema. Has encontrado soluciones? gracias
@jessiesFlying will this work on sequoia upgrade??
@@biggboxx501 it should, didn’t test it yet…
@JessiesFlying, thanks for the vid. This did not work for me. After following the tutorial of getting the latest KDK did not work either. I never had an issue of the Volume not mounting. My issue was that at the point of rebooting, after ejecting the installer USB, the system would freeze after I logged on to the system.
On my MacBook Air6,1, upgrading from System Preferences did not work. Upgrading from USB did not work.
What worked for me was to wipe the entire hard drive. Then do a clean install of OS14.1. After the clean install, I did not have to install anything else. Then I proceeded to back up from Time Machine.
thx for the insight. when it's installed from USB the root patches are applied automatically....
@@JessiesFlying At least for me, with Macbook Air6,1 now I know that I will always have to clean my drive prior to install to the next update.
@@realStefanLowe not necessarily - do an update from USB (same procedure, but it will update when there is a macOS already installed) and the root patches are also applied automatically...
@@JessiesFlying Updating to 14.1.1 had to clean my entire drive again. The system kept telling me my drive did not have enough free space for the upgrade. I have about 50GB of free space on my drive. I, like you like to play with my laptops, so if this information is useful to you, then great. MacBook Air6,1

@@JessiesFlying brilliant many thanks I’ll look at the details for NVRAM reset and give it a try😊 I’ll update if I get it working from that.
@@leighrandle2736 👍
Is it a USB drive? There might been no USB drivers loaded during boot…
Every time I hold control and select EFI boot, it just sends me to a screen where the boot logo appears and the bar will go about halfway and stop. Any tips?
Are you sure it recognized the command? Maybe try a USB keyboard
Hi Jessie, what do I need to do before I upgrade from 14 to 14.1 ? Just get the kdk installed then run the patcher??
Install OCLP 1.1, install KDK 14.1 and update, then apply root patch
@@JessiesFlying that’s what I hope it would be. Already installed the 14 with the 1.1 will download the 14.1 kdk and update. Thx again Jessie
@@JessiesFlyingI did install the kdk, then run the patcher and restarted. Checked the about mac info , still at 14.0. This was done on a working iMac with 14.0 installed already.
@@AK-ik9fe now you can install macOS 14.1
@@JessiesFlying it doesn’t install the new 14.1. Did it twice, kdk install then the root patcher then reboot, still shows 14 and not 14.1.
Hi - I have followed these steps but my problem is slightly different. I get to the boot screen, it starts booting but progress bar makes it only to about half of the way, where it then stalls. Any advice as to what I can do here?
Try safe mode (keep SHIFT pressed)
