Steve's tip is so right. I made a second copy. Once my second 2012 Mac Book Pro came in I simply installed the SSD with Sonoma that I made from my first 2012 Macbook Pro. I had a white screen for a whiillleee. It THEN showed the progress bar. But when I did it again on the second 2012 Mac Book Pro from scratch no more white screen. It's also not overheating like before.
Yeah, you can see when you build the installer it says what hardware version the installer is for at the bottom - so just easier to create it on the same computer to avoid incompatibility.
If you've made sure to run all post-install updates and restarted a couple times, it may just be a limitation of your hardware. For optimal performance go for a static dark background and then try working your way to more complex wallpapers.
I have a 2011 iMac 27in which I installed Ubuntu 24.04 onto recently and it works very well. My computer would probably run better if I upgraded to an SSD and I may do that but for now it does everything I need it too. I do suggest getting a linux set up on an old computer just to try it out. You can even do a temp install option to test.
It's weird that on the two attempts that I have done and both failed the two flash drives I no longer working with the Mac. One isn't even seen as being inserted, and the other now spits up an incompatibility error.

Great video and a perfect way of explaining all the steps : ) question, in doing all this as you said in this tutorial and the one before when you installed Sonoma in your MacBook. there are no side effects to the performance? I want to install Ventura in a MacBook air 2017 8gb ram and 125 gb SSD Another question, the 8gb of ram in the MacBook air is obviously not enough as it is , running the supported ios ( Monterrey ) probably because I am using it for things that is not meant to be used, as photo edition...lol . my question is this, this laptop as it is , is having a lot of trouble doing photo editing, with Sonoma can be worse than this? it will demand more from the computer in many different areas, and therefore make the computer run even worse than before? or, with all the tutorials, and everything set correctly, it will run similarly than before?
Thanks for a well- presented video. I've been trying for 5 days following instructions carefully but I only get two options when I reboot not four. 27" iMac late 2013, Catalina.
@AnsonAlexander ? i'm a little confused here, I followed your video to install sonoma 14.4 on my 2015 imac and everything installed great working great, now i'm getting a notification to upgrade to 14.41 can I just click in the OS to upgrade or is there a special thing to upgrade i'm not figuring out? Thanks for the tutorial it works and it’s good for “basic” operations but my Djing software (Serato Dj and Virtual Dj) doesn’t work due to graphics card issues on my 2011 MacBook Air 13” and my 2011 MacBook Pro 15” but they wouldn’t allow the software to run in the first place so it may be a hardware compatibility issue rather than the software.
I installed it on my 2009 17" macbook pro running monterey and it works but with limited options due to the older graphics, initially when i tried to open the app it gave the error that it couldn't open due to my graphics but i quit it and opened it a second time and then it loaded and worked. The issues you experienced could be because of the graphics issues in the 2011 macbooks

I have Sonoma installed on an early 2011 Macbook Pro. I did pay for someone to install Monterey on the computer but I found it to be laggy/slow which might have beenpart in due to a battery that needs to be replaced. I did upgrade from 8 to 16 gb. The only issue I have which is not much of one, is the map app does not work properly.
My patcher popped up to ask me if I wanted to install to the hdd, which I did, but when it told me to reboot, it said "hold option key and select EFI" but when I rebooted i wasn't given thay option. I could only choose between the Sonoma installer or the mac hd.
Hi Anson. Thanks for the plug much appreciated. There is one issue I'm coming across on my iMac after installing MacOS Monterey. There are no WiFi drivers that are installed and I can't seem to find a site where I can get the drivers. Even my LAN port is not recognizing anything. Any idea what to do?
Hi Alexander, Thanks for this tutorial, it worked for me. However, I apologize if the question has already been asked. I can no longer access my recovery (cmd+R). Is this normal? Macbook pro late 2013 11.3 Thank for all
If the computer is worth keeping, its probably worth doing. From a user POV, I think its probably time to drop dual-core machines as things which run a web browser. They might still be ok for imessage. My 2015 imac and 4,2->5,1 Mac Pro work great with OCLP. I did have a USB3 card in the mac pro and I have non-bluetooth MS wireless keyboard/trackpad I normally use for my media pc. My 2011 MBP works, but struggles. It also struggled with the supported OS, so no change there, however at least Brave can be updated.
Nice tutorial! :) i just wanna ask if no need to reformat/erase the ssd drive? Or I’ll just install/overwrite directly to mac ssd? “for updating to the latest os version only”
Hey Anton, great video, however, could you do another video on this subject, partly being dyslexic and find it hard find it hard to take in all in at one go! an other question, does this apply for 2017 iMac models too. thanks Jake
Hi Anson, excellent video. I have followed all the steps in the video to upgrade 2015 Macbook pro to Sonoma. Its installed however once installation has completed I am receiving an error saying Time limit reached on OPenCore Patcher and then i can not do anything. Most of the apps are put on time limit as well. Appreciate if there is any solution.
Currently working on a MacBook version 10.8 OS X And the updates won’t take. I tried Sonoma and Big Sur. Not sure where to go to continue working on this thing.
Hi Anson, I updated my MacBook Pro 2011, and it took me a good 10 hours (yes, you read that right 😀). While it worked okay initially, albeit a little slower than usual, I can’t reboot and start my MacBook now, unfortunately. I’d also like to mention that I have a 500GB hard drive with enough space for the update. When trying to start my MacBook it makes the usual sounds with white screen appearing for 10 seconds and everything goes blank and I can still hear the MacBook running in the background?
I'd love that idea of installing Linux on an old Mac but question remains which Linux Distro would you go with? Therefore, I'd stay with my MacOS Ventura on my 2015 MBP.
You do a great job on these videos but FYI your USB drive was larger than 16 GB. When I used 2 different 16 GB drives my download from Apple was Sonoma 14.6 and the install was slightly larger that the 16 GB drives and failed on both. Had to run out and get a pack of 32 GB usb drives to work properly
Great Video! I upgraded my 2015 Mac Book Air Early 2015. I have an issue now, when attempting to install the Opencore legacy patcher to disk, it appears to work, but when I reboot, I get the recovery screen. Any help to fix would be great!
I updated tho Sonoma and this was first time doning any install on macos and of macos and your video is great. But after finishing now im getting the update notification to update on Sequoia through software update, is this possible will this ruin the install?
With the number of problems you ran into, this upgrade process sounds like a gamble nightmare. Will you be making another video that makes use of the new 1.5 version of the app?
Thanks for your great videos! I'm running Sonoma 14.3.1 on a 2020 Mac mini desktop with a Magic keyboard and Magic Trackpad. Since downloading the latest update, I am incapable of using my trackpad to drag ANYTHING using my trackpad - including icons, widgets and open windows. My trackpad and keyboard are fully charged and blue tooth connected. Seemingly, I can only organize my desktop using the Apple software, which is extremely cumbersome. I've watched your previous video on setting up Sonoma...but cannot drag and drop. I've tried everything to no avail, and am at my wit's end. Any direction you can point me in would be greatly appreciated.

is it possible on Imac creating 3 partitions, 1 with Sonama, 2. with win11/10, 3. with Ubuntu Linux (KDE NEON) so on start chosing anything you like. ?
It gets a bit complicated, through boot camp you can only have 1 Windows partition but if you're good with command line or find the right third party tool, you can accomplish what you're looking for. It can be hard to keep things up to date and working properly though. I would start looking into some of the Hackintosh stuff out there to find those answers. Sorry I can't help more with that one just yet!
I followed the instructions from the video and I successfully installed Sonoma on a 2012 Mini, but then using the same USB stick I tried installing in on a 2011 Mini and it gets stuck on the black screen with the apple logo, the progress bar wouldn't move for hours. Same happened with Ventura. Finally I was able to install Monterey. Any ideas why Venture and Sonoma installations wouldn't complete and if there is anything I can do to fix that?
When you create the installer, it is made specific to that computer so, using the same installer on another computer, unless it is the same model, will likely not work. Try creating the installer on the computer that you're going to update.

No, no performance issues and no bluetooth problems once you get it setup. You may have to do a PRAM reset after the install to kickstart bluetooth back into action. Make sure to install open core to the disk and to run post-install updates.
Wireless trackpad and keyboard caused major issues with my 2012 iMac running Sonoma. Switched to usb mouse and keyboard in the meantime - see update comment in reply to this message

I completed the whole process to Monterey and Sonoma but I did not like the temperature on my Mac mini late 2012 so I got back to Catalina. I would rather get the base model Mac mini with M2. So I am better with the latest supported version even if it does not have any updates. Everything was working fine but I felt something was not right.

@@AnsonAlexander After I see the moving wallpaper it takes about another minute before I can use it, to settle. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.
If you've made sure to run all post-install updates and restarted a couple times, it may just be a limitation of your hardware. For optimal performance go for a static dark background and then try working your way to more complex wallpapers.
Hi there!
How do I get rid of the white screen?
Mine is a 2011 and came with a white screen and I can’t even type from my keyboard.
Please
Advice
@@juanvera4122are you still having this issue? or did switching to a static background fix it
I have a 2011 iMac 27in which I installed Ubuntu 24.04 onto recently and it works very well. My computer would probably run better if I upgraded to an SSD and I may do that but for now it does everything I need it too. I do suggest getting a linux set up on an old computer just to try it out. You can even do a temp install option to test.
was the EFI partition created by opencore at any point during the process or did you create the EFI partition prior to
Really dope to see you with a atomik canvas 😎😎 I am now subbed ! Just watched your video tutorial and updated my mid 2012 mbp unibody. Thank you 🙏🏽 ☮️
It screwed my MacBook up and now it’s stuck in 2009 help me I have an iMac and an extra 2tb ssd
It's weird that on the two attempts that I have done and both failed the two flash drives I no longer working with the Mac. One isn't even seen as being inserted, and the other now spits up an incompatibility error.
Just used OCLP to install Ventura on my 2014 MBP and it worked without a hitch!
On my Mac It's stopping in this time 3:23 for your video
what can I do
Please , when i choose to set up the installation and at the point of “select the disk where you want to install macOS” I choose macintoch HD and press continue, the error massage pup-up “” An error occurred while preparing the installation!! What can i do please??
So the Was it Worth it topic is 30 seconds at the end of 6:47 video, most of which is just a re-run of the how to video?
I am yet to actually use it but I have just installed Sonoma on my old MBP10,1 2012 17" i7. Safari is working and I've just been able to use RUclips. This was a useless computer which couldn't even run Safari and now that works. So now I'm going to watch the "was it worth it" video. For me it was worth it based on what's already been seen.
I do have the same Macbook and running Linux on it and it runs very smooth. Unless for whatever reason you have to run macos, give it a try.
Late 2011 MacbookPro with broken AMD Radeon here. Currently on High Sierra working with NVRAM hack and login trick to reload amd kext after login to keep AMD Radeon's temperature cool. Can I use OpenCore Legacy Patcher anyway to update to, say, Ventura? Thanks in advance.
Great video and a perfect way of explaining all the steps : )
question, in doing all this as you said in this tutorial and the one before when you installed Sonoma in your MacBook. there are no side effects to the performance?
In other words, if I'm using OPCL on in unsupported Mac, do not update Mac OS via System Preferences but always update via OPCL?
Thanks for a well- presented video. I've been trying for 5 days following instructions carefully but I only get two options when I reboot not four. 27" iMac late 2013, Catalina.
@AnsonAlexander ? i'm a little confused here, I followed your video to install sonoma 14.4 on my 2015 imac and everything installed great working great, now i'm getting a notification to upgrade to 14.41 can I just click in the OS to upgrade or is there a special thing to upgrade i'm not figuring out? Thank you Did I not see a video of yours talking about this ?
Did you ever find out ? I updated to Ventura then got an update to sequoia from the regular system and now my computer is freezing
Hello Mr. Alexander , Vivek this side from India and i hope you are doing well..i just have a question that i have a macbook air 2017 version with intel i5 chipset , so will my macbook run smoothly after installing macos sonoma in it without any bugs and all ?
I got I mac mid 2011, I updated sanoma, after few weeks just stopped working and once I boot the imac it just goes to blank screen , how do I install from other computer?Any help appreciated 👍
4b ram is it possible
this video is a godsend in almost 7. minutes....... and the only linux distro i like is ParrotOS
I have now done this to a number of MacBooks and iMacs that couldn't do online banking, because of security, that can now do their online banking.
Hi Anson. Thanks for the plug much appreciated. There is one issue I'm coming across on my iMac after installing MacOS Monterey. There are no WiFi drivers that are installed and I can't seem to find a site where I can get the drivers. Even my LAN port is not recognizing anything. Any idea what to do?
I updated from the open core and my 2011 MacBook Pro is on 12.0 it wants me to go up to 13.0, can I do that without open core?
Hi Alexander, Thanks for this tutorial, it worked for me. However, I apologize if the question has already been asked. I can no longer access my recovery (cmd+R). Is this normal? Macbook pro late 2013 11.3
Thank for all
Great video, Anson! I was wondering whether updating an unsupported Mac using OpenCore Legacy Patcher would impact the bootcamp partition of the Mac.
Can you make a video for installing in a different computer with the different settings ypu mentioned pls
Thank you so much it really worked out
Nice tutorial!
Also, is it best to upgrade an existing iMac or wipe the hard drive first and do a clean install? I'm still on Big Sur.
Currently working on a MacBook version 10.8 OS X And the updates won’t take. I tried Sonoma and Big Sur. Not sure where to go to continue working on this thing.
Okay, I understand your computer is currently running 10.8 but what is the year and exact model of the hardware? Can find out in Apple Menu -> About
Hi Anson,
I updated my MacBook Pro 2011, and it took me a good 10 hours (yes, you read that right 😀).
Are you familiar with the setting in OCLP: "disable firmware throttling?" How do I actually "enable " this feature!?
You do a great job on these videos but FYI your USB drive was larger than 16 GB. When I used 2 different 16 GB drives my download from Apple was Sonoma 14.6 and the install was slightly larger that the 16 GB drives and failed on both. Had to run out and get a pack of 32 GB usb drives to work properly
If my Flash drive has 60.5 GB, can it be installed?
Great Video! I upgraded my 2015 Mac Book Air Early 2015. I have an issue now, when attempting to install the Opencore legacy patcher to disk, it appears to work, but when I reboot, I get the recovery screen. Any help to fix would be great!
I updated tho Sonoma and this was first time doning any install on macos and of macos and your video is great. But after finishing now im getting the update notification to update on Sequoia through software update, is this possible will this ruin the install?
I updated to sonoma from ventura.. But made my imac slow sluggish and problem with WiFi.....
So helpful, thanks alot for this
With the number of problems you ran into, this upgrade process sounds like a gamble nightmare. Will you be making another video that makes use of the new 1.5 version of the app?
Installed Sonoma 14.5 on a 2013 Mac Pro and run Logic 11
Any direction you can point me in would be greatly appreciated.
why is it so important the flash drive? i installed macOS ventura with open core patcher without an usb and it worked
please help me understand
I did all off this steps on my MacBook pro 2011 model installing mac os monterey on last steps installing in drive that error pops up 👇🏻
an error occurred while preparing the installation. try running this application again
Just got this. Mid 2012 MBP. Did you find a solution?
My 2012 takes a very long time to boot up with Sonoma
is it possible on Imac creating 3 partitions, 1 with Sonama, 2. with win11/10, 3. with Ubuntu Linux (KDE NEON)
so on start chosing anything you like.
Try creating the installer on the computer that you're going to update.
i have a Mac intel core i5 (27-inch, Mid 2010) running macOS 10.13.6 . Ive put in a 500 gb ssd and a 2tb hdd and 20 gigs DDR3 ram. whats the latest osx i could reliably run.? Do i need to upgrade graphics card? ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB
thanks @anson alexander helpful tutorial want to ask if it will work on a 2011 MacBook Pro, what i have right now is a 2011 and am attempting to give the update a try
If I upgrade to Sonoma on an old machine, will ALL my installed Apple Apps/Programs still work from my old machine or do/will I. .....be able to upgrade all of them?
How to install macos sonama without a 15+ GB hard drive? (But I have a 62,5 Flash drive )
Will the update to Sanoma update the built in firmware too? I mean will i be able to install an older version of macos after the new version?
Planing to follow your recommendations to upgrade my MacBook Pro 15” 2013 late
I’m running my Mac with big sur now, am thinking, shall I backup all my contents by Time Machine on big sur, follow your videos to upgrade my Mac to sonoma with opencore legacy patcher, after that, upload all my contents back to my Mac with Time Machine again, that works?
On the website to download the installers, it doesn't show the links to download the assets. It just shows a spinning loading circle in the assets options.
an error occurred while preparing the installation. try running this application again.
Can you please help me out here??
I have a mid-2015 iMac and have been running into the error that Sonoma application is damaged. I’ve changed the dates in the terminal a number of times, but also to no avail. Any suggestions?
What is performance like? Any hardware such as Bluetooth unavailable?
No, no performance issues and no bluetooth problems once you get it setup. You may have to do a PRAM reset after the install to kickstart bluetooth back into action. Make sure to install open core to the disk and to run post-install updates.
Hey plzz help i have macbook air 2013 and after updating the mac its shuts down anytime
EFI boot not showing
Just a heads up, I was installing Sonoma 14.4 last weak and a 16GB flash disk ran out of capacity. I had to use a 32 GB one.
Wireless trackpad and keyboard caused major issues with my 2012 iMac running Sonoma. Switched to usb mouse and keyboard in the meantime - see update comment in reply to this message
Update: I missed your comment in your first install video to run the post-install root patch. Now my iMac runs better than new! No bluetooth issues anymore
Hi
Thanks for the great video, but I need serios help with an issue. Whatever I do, open core does not install on my hard drive and it just works if the usb is connected.
I appreciate your help and advice
I completed the whole process to Monterey and Sonoma but I did not like the temperature on my Mac mini late 2012 so I got back to Catalina. I would rather get the base model Mac mini with M2. So I am better with the latest supported version even if it does not have any updates. Everything was working fine but I felt something was not right.
Hi Anson, thank you for sharing this video. However I have a question, everytime I tried to install sonoma to my macintosh HD, I got an error message "An error occured while preparing the installation. Try running this application again". I still have around 87gb available in my disk. Is it due to my disk or is it my installer? Really appreciate any help on this. Thank you
I installed Monterey on a mid 2012 MacBook Pro. Can I upgrade to Sonoma through system software updates?
