you gotta give this guy credit... gets smashed by critics and usually panned by box office, but he keeps giving it everything and getting his own funding. props to him!
He is not getting funding, he is funding himself
Actually a majority of his movies make a large profit, only 1 or 2 have been complete bombs
Fun fact : The only movie of his that bombed was the lady in the water. Even the happening and last air bender made enough money to not be called a flop
@@yarekoog2857 Oof, that movie was bad. I’m not surprised it lost money.
@@yarekoog2857 I think After Earth was a financial disappointment too, it made back the budget but the hidden marketing costs were too high to break even
Shyamalan is one of those directors who can deliver disappointment after disappointment and still never lose me as a fan.
Right?! Hahahahah
Says something about your movie taste
His stuff is always entertaining!!!
+1
I still appreciate the fact that he's telling new stories. I love weird movies if they're good and with Old, it could've been better but I didn't mind watching it tho. I thought it was just entertaining and that's all I could say
It's clear he's so deliberate with his choices to better serve the story. It's fascinating to hear him talk about his process. A true visionary.
remember the last airbender

Listening to him talk through the concepts behind his movies and filming decisions, it really garners a lot of respect for him and his craft (however controversial they occasionally may be). He's much more deliberate and thoughtful and puts so much care into each shot. I'm willing to give him another shot
The Australian connection was fascinating. It explains my tastes in camera movement because I grew up on those movies. His knowledge of cinematic language is intimidating
That's why I only buy DVD that has commentary, they worth way more than the movie itself!
Night Shamalan is a guy that when he talks, his talk does not leave fissures, his talk is very concise and clear. That is why I admire him. I watched the movie, and the script is very original, it keeps you riveted to the edge of your seat the whole film.
I totally agree. It was very thought provoking.
Directors are geniuses. There's so much detail and thought behind everything. Nothing but respect for them
Michael Bay is a director
@@aomoxomoa3658 And? I still respect him even if I don't particularly like his movies
@@KEEPTHECHANGE10 if you think Michael Bay is a genius it doesn't take much effort to believe you would also respect him.
@@aomoxomoa3658 Bay gets in 50-70 set ups a day all while pushing the boundaries of filmmaking technology. Yeah, he’s a genius and respected by some of the best directors working today. Find better low hanging fruit
@@aomoxomoa3658 yeah so? Yeah he sucks at the job in most things but his action sequences are peerless. He is also very hardworking even though he sucks to a lot extent.
This man is the living definition of a creative genius
Ehhhhh… maybe 20 years ago
@@mathemachickenmadge2963 at least he’s still trying to be original unlike so many modern filmmakers who are scared to to push original creative scripts. even tho you may not like them, his more recent films are still very fun to watch and well made. (minus avatar) lol
@@Nimajneb42069 There are more modern filmmakers creating original movies than there aren’t nowadays. They just don’t get blockbuster budgets like M. Night
@@Nimajneb42069 Do you know why modern filmmakers are not trying to push original ideas? Because Hollywood only pedals out dumb superhero cgi fests now. They’re not interested in creativity.
I’d rather watch his movies than some dumb remakes of movie classics that don’t need to be made
that is why he pay his own production to make his movies
Right at least he took a shot
Good point
Yeah he made movie remake that should not be made I will give you the initials atla

Old was awesome…our crowd clapped at the end. He remains original in his storytelling.
@TheArchitect_24 HAHAHAHAHAHAH THIS IS AWESOME
Movie was terrible 🤦🏻♂️
@@Nightshade1881 Terrible is in the eye of the beholder.
Glad some people loved it
Old was not a good movie.
Shyamalan doesn’t get enough credit for his directing sometimes.
He should though
Rewatched village recently and had the exact same thought. He’s overhated for sure
@@Nimajneb42069 he's overhated because of The Last Airbender which it's understandable cuz that movie destroyed the entire fanbase myself included but he's not a terrible filmmaker imo. It's just that, big budget movies like The Last Airbender ain't his thing yet, he's not ready to make such movies like that and should've had the creators to help him
He made a bad film Everyone blame him
He made a Good Film Literally Nobody talk about him
While the may not be the most conventional director, I hold a handful of his movies in my heart. The Village, Lady in the Water, Signs, and as a guilty pleasure... even The Last Airbender.
.....me too
For me: SIXTH SENSE, UNBREAKABLE, SIGNS, LADY IN THE WATER, THE VILLAGE, SPLIT
What I love the most about M. Night is how he isn't afraid to trust the audience's intelligence. Not every single thing is explained in detail in his movies. You're free to imagine. That kind of creative control M. Night has is really something special.
Really? I felt old was super exposition heavy. The characters literally had to explain everything that was happening.
*Lubna isn't gonna like 'OLD'.*
I’m wondering if you’ve ever actually seen his movies lol.
@@alexmaverick6647having a different opinion doesn't have to mean I haven't seen his movie. I have seen them and IMO it's isn't fair to lump him in the failure category because of a few bad ones. You don't have to be condescending just because you think otherwise.

I honestly think this movie has everything to be a classic. I really enjoyed it and believe it’s wildly underrated!
You know I’ll give him this, even tho his movies may not be the best he at least tries to make something that’s somewhat original. Even if he does obviously have a few stinkers (I.e the happening, the last airbender) I still think he’s a pretty good director, I do find most of his movies at least somewhat decent.
Definitely, his stuff is very hit or miss. But at least the misses are always entertaining and the hits are usually phenomenal! Like Split and The Sixth Sense, for instance.
It’s actually based on a French comic called “Sand Castles” he adapted it and bought the rights.
I must say, this is one of the least effusive compliments I’ve seen, haha… but I tend to agree.
He made signs, split and the sixth sense so he’ll always have my respect
He made some masterpieces as well
Don’t care what the critics say this movie wasn’t perfect but it has something to say and how little time we really have.
Fax
This little maneuver will cost us 25 years
it's getting more and more perfect when I rewatch it. There's stuff in the other half of frames and the reverse shots of seemingly "annoying" bits that feel "wrong" that are actually perfect
I remember reading a book as a kid about astronaut scientists on another planet using a spray that rapidly ages vegetables in order to harvest them quicker, and one or more of them getting caught in it and aged to death in seconds as the finale to the story. Haunted my dreams and I've been looking for a story like this ever since. Glad it was M. Knight who made it.

Do you happen to remember what it was called? That sounds interesting to me
I could listen to his visions, ideas, thoughts and perspective choices for ages... Super interesting personality!
Loved OLD thought it was bloody fantastic classic M Night Shamylan at his best beautifully shot brilliant proformances great storytelling brilliant concept executed loved that it felt like a 70s supernatural horror film easily one of my favourite M Night movies
Same. I don’t understand why so many people hated it. Thought the movie was spectacular!!!
His movie The Village was one of the first horror movies I had ever seen as a kid. Seriously terrifying. I had no idea he directed that. This dude has my vote lol, I will be watching this soon
Honesty, his movies are great to me. He’s always pushing originality and his stories are very intriguing. I think the people that disregard him are people who don’t appreciate good film when they see it. Only true movie goers will realize and appreciate what he brings to the screen.

This is fascinating on so many levels. This guy understands HOW to tell a story, even knows WHY he’s telling the story… he just doesn’t know WHEN to stop telling the story. Old has a perfect ending… and then it goes on for five more minutes.
I love the break down. It's so cool to hear his mind set and vision for the movie. It's cool to be able to get in his head.

I actually enjoyed this one! Most of his movies are great. Very original. Love his passion.
He has been my favorite director for soooo long. I just love everything he does!
He’s only become my favorite in the last couple of years
Even the village?
Same! My sister and I were just talking about this. We love his movies.
Good or bad, Shamylan never bores. It’s easy to see he’s very passionate about what he makes, and you gotta give him credit for that
Probably my favourite M. Night movie ever (and I’m already a big fan). He really hit it out of the park with crafting an emotional journey that’s both devastating and beautiful.

My inspiration. My idol. He's unapologetic in his craft and he does what he wants his own way in the most creative and unique ways.
Still mad at him for Glass, but still remaining a fan after that even.
I liked Glass. Don’t see the problem with it
This guy is a GENIOUS. In the Top 10 US directors working right now
Thank you M. Knight for giving us this. The film, and this little masterclass. I got a lot out of it. Interesting to hear you say that handheld “is like Tabasco sauce”. I wonder why you feel that way.
"I wanted you to not understand what was happening." Well he succeeded. I had no idea what was going on with the little boy. I didn't know if he'd seen something scary, was having some sort of health emergency, or we were getting a little The Happening crossover (kidding on that last one). But seriously, loved the confusion and fear in those few seconds.

He's so clever with his craft
In this age of remakes, reboots and sequels, filmmakers like Shyamalan need to be treasured.
in this movie: if any scene is "annoying" it means there's something interesting happening in the other half of the frame or the reverse shot that you're meant to notice. just trust me.
examples?
you watch a typical action movie you know what you’re expecting, when you watch this is makes you think what’s going to happen next it has an effect on you
I love Shyamalans movies. This movie had me with my jaw on the ground almost the whole time.
I love to hear M. Night talk about his creative process behind 2008's The Happening!

Old is a very interesting film in that there was a lot that I really liked in it, some so much so that I can't get it out of my head, and there is also plenty I didn't like (certain decisions, the ending, etc). However, you can tell the parts that he really put his heart into, such as this, and those are some of my favorite moments.

M Night MUST Make a @Masterclass.
Great movie. Ending lacked a bit because it was long but it was amazing.
Forget old we need another split movie 🍿 💯💯💯💯

Wow very interesting to watch
He is unique because that not he has creative ideas. He is unique because he is making a movie of these ideas.
I completely respect M. Night as an artist because I love how he cares so much about interesting themes and ideas. But dear God, how is it that he hasn’t learned over the years how to write realistic dialogue?
Over half of the dialogue in Old is just forced exposition that no actual human being would ever say
I agree. He just needs to improve the screenplay
