    Love your build, as a biologist (but certainly not specialist on millipede), I do like to get the ecology/ diversity working for you. I already was thinking to introduce worms and spring tails into my build. The more diversity, the more a tank becomes an Eco sphere the better the circulation of nutrients is, and the less risk of fungi appearing or accumulating detritus. You take local material from the forest (illegal here in Holland, I do have a garden) and thus introducing a lot of "local" diversity in your tank. I love it, although for what I can find, people do not advice this. You could get a local disease into the tank of which your millipede is not resistent to. Any proof of this happening I did not find. Probably it is even impossible to determine, who is an expert on millipede healthcare 😃. Even so, if you would try, it will never be 100 percent sterile, you cannot sterilize living plants or mos. So the best question I have for you, how are currently doing? Keep on posting!

      Hello bud! Thank you very much for loving my build that really means a lot to me 😃
      There’s worms inside & springtails like you said, I use tropical springtails as they thrive in those style of environment- I love the fact there’s so much wildlife inside & like you say no direct research saying this can be harmful for myself or the millipedes - these are though things I thought of myself regarding the “local” diseases that African millipedes may not be resistant too but they’re thriving and since I added them into here I’ve noticed breeding activity. My only hope is that the eggs don’t get eaten before they hatch but I’m not too sure if anything would predate on them as there’s only native millipedes, centipedes & isopods. Worms & little bugs here and there. We will see haha! I’ll make sure I update the tank soon for you 😃❤️

    I always fancied getting some of these in a UK-native terrarium but didn’t know whether it would be ok for them. This has reinspired me. One question: do they require an additional water source in this setup or do they get everything they need from food and condensation (assuming it’s a closed setup)?

    • @AntScapes1
      @AntScapes1  2 года назад +1

      I mean I’ve had these in for 6-7 months now and they’re thriving mate. I bought them as adults and have all females but I do intend once a few pass away getting another 5-6 and hopefully getting some breeding going on. I literally just spray it down every couple days and that’s suffice - I feed them fruit & protein also, which they get some water from the fruit but mainly as it’s a closed terrarium they get a lot from condensation off the glass or moss/plants and dew on plants - but everything is going really well 😃❤️
      Also thank you for watching Kenny! ❤️

    • @AntScapes1
      @AntScapes1  3 года назад

      I’m not worried about them at all tbh, the millipedes are very hardy & I constantly see them moving around. Isopods can sometimes nibble the millipedes but as long as you feed them well it’s all good. I leave a constant source of sugars inside & then I sprinkle fish food in daily. I get no problems and the isopods absolutely thrive. Plus just like anything there’s always a fine balance/a Ying & yang and nature works itself out. Predatory mites to soil mites, to small millipedes and small centipedes they counter act each other. I find it’s the same in my Myrmica Ruginodis setup. Mites get controlled by rove beetles. But if you are you could use different soil it’s just they absolutely love that soil mix more than anything so I’d definitely advice it. Plus it’s free 😂. If I see them struggling or anything then I can always take them out & restart with another mix but even then, there’s no guarantee you won’t get pests. I have spiders and all sorts in it too and I see loads of activity but it adds to the fun 😃. This includes snail, slugs, bugs, beetles, mites, Millis, centipedes, spiders all native. So there’s already a huge balance/counter balance in the tank 😃
      The only thing that would be annoying is if slugs escaped the tank as they make a mess 😂😂

    • @petramatkovic4122
      @petramatkovic4122 3 года назад

      @@AntScapes1 That's so true! I usually add all kinds of soils and creatures from outdoors in my terrariums. It just makes everything look lively and you have an entire functioning ecosystem too. I guess I'd just be a bit reluctant to add such diversity to my big millipede because it's 'special' and I don't want to risk his health. But I'll see, maybe I'll decide to just throw in a bunch of soil from outside to add some critters in there too.

    • @AntScapes1
      @AntScapes1  3 года назад +1

      @@petramatkovic4122 yeahhh!! That’s it it’s all part of the fun, I absolutely love my millipedes. I’ve become so so attached and I honestly didn’t think I would. It’s a lid with a 4cm gap at the front (enough they can’t climb from) and my fan is situated on my mountain paludarium to the left blowing across the two as they’re touching. My other tank is heated at 27c and it gives it a little more warmth as well as the tiny heat pad on the back. But I learnt the hard way with no ventilation on my myrmica ruginodis build when the whole thing just fogged up & weird things started to appear. I soon flew to the shops for a fan and it cleared up instantly 😂
      These hobbies need mistakes I think to learn more, it’s like being in a job, you just learn Tiny details over time.
      You should check my mountain paludarium & myrmica ruginodis setup too 😃

    Few questions:
    Is there anything to worry about when using wild-found bits of wood and soil etc in terms of either dangerous plants or critters?
    Also, do you not use any type of heat pad? I have a heat pad on the back of one half of my tank to keep the temperature up at around 22C and he seems to prefer to be in that area. The pet shop advised me to buy mulch from them but it's quite expensive to fill even my small tank so I'd prefer to do what you have done and pick my own stuff
    Thanks!

    • @AntScapes1
      @AntScapes1  2 года назад

      Hey buddy! Yes, I have a heat pad towards the back of the tank itself to keep temps nice in one area, however, with it being in my animal room the room is constantly 22+ even at night time. Normal runs around 22-27c. To answer your question though, I’ve experienced no problems at all and that’s exactly what the millipedes have preferred. Check my animal room tour update video from a week ago, I actually start with this set-up/tank ❤️

    • @AntScapes1
      @AntScapes1  2 года назад

      Also I don’t really worry about other critters/inhabitants, in nature you tend to have a Ying & Yang working in the background within the soils. But always good to heat in oven on a low heat for an hour with wood etc if you’re worried.

    • @AntScapes1

      I completely get you, but my thoughts on this are that if they’re at a local pet store, the chances are that the care they will be receiving, compared to the care you will give them is going to be substantially different. I mean let’s face it, when I got mine, they were in tiny little tubs so I know if I added them into a bioactive vivarium it’ll benefit them much more then a small tub where they can’t even stretch out.

      I always keep isopods with my millipedes, the only time you would ever see nibbling is if it’s a super, super prolific species. Never keep Porcellio with them, Only Armadillidium or Cubaris. All of the plants I used seemed okay, but if that’s the case, whatever you find nice or want to use, you can always just have a quick google. @AntScapes1  Год назад

      Hello Zara! Thank you for watching the video & also sorry for the delay in replying. I generally don’t worry at all, I always tend to find these sort of setups are the easiest as the soil is so full of beneficial bacteria and balanced fauna I have the least issues. Only setups I’ve made with bought aquarium gravel or even compost/top soil/garden centre bought material to make the soil mix - it will have some sort of slight teething problem initially with a little bit of mould. So with aged soil like that it really does have a balance, that’s even with the fungus in soil. For example (I’m going to bore you now 🤣) Metarhizium brunneum is a natural varroa mite repellent and can kill them, this can be used for soil around bee colonies etc… Soil in nature has everything or very similar things like this which balance it so perfectly as it’s so aged.
      Anyways, I guess no they have been breeding but I think the isopods eat the eggs. I like the balance, I’ll have these 4 for a few years and hopefully everything goes well & they live the best life haha 😄 (yes I bought another!) 🤭
      I hope your weeks been great so far ❤️

      @@AntScapes1 there's definitely reason to worry, I wouldn't be spreading info online that these organisms are completely compatible, because anecdotes aside, they are not compatible. After doing a ton of research, I'm going to have my tank sterile. I personally wouldn't advise others to act similarly to you, but as long as you haven't had problems, good luck to you and your pedes

    how often should you clean out your millipedes tank?

    • @AntScapes1
      @AntScapes1  2 года назад +1

      I don’t think there’s a rule on how often to clean, I would say as long as it’s not visibly mouldy etc then it should be fine. I spray mine down every 2-3 days, I can also wipe the glass at the front for a nicer view, however, I don’t clean it out as everything inside will either get eaten or if I add food and they don’t finish it, I’ll just take it out. I once added a banana skin for the soil and that decomposed completely without smelling. But I think that was down to get mature soil from outdoors!

    Are you not concerned with parasites and mites? How do you avoid this? My giant millipede managed to get parasitic mites from some wood I gathered from a forest, they quickly spread and rapidly increased in numbers even though the wood was free from critters (to the naked eye)? One sadly passed not long after and I cant help but think it was my fault for putting the wood in there in the first place without being more careful.
    I now make a tropical substrate mix from multiple sterilised substrate mixes (mostly bio life as it has charcoal in it) a little sand, some cuttle fish crushed up and sphagnum moss. I then add in wood and leaves which have been left in the open for 7 days (so any critters get out) then thoroughly washed. For plants, I wash and quarantine for 30 days to remove any critters or potential pesticides before planting in the enclosure. I then top the whole thing off with springtails and isopods (captive bred). As an extra precaution, I settled the environment for a further 30 days. This worked out well as mine then successfully made many pedelings! I think there are benefits to both methods and yours looks amazing and would be so much easier than the current process! - Sorry for the essay!

    • @AntScapes1
      @AntScapes1  2 года назад

      Hey Jessie! To be honest I’ve never had a problem - they’re absolutely loving the home still & I always find when you have something from nature - you have a balance/Ying-yang. Like you would if you found nettles, then doc leaves nearby. I may get to a point where I have a problem down the line but for me I’ve never had an issue. I think you’ve been really unlucky to be honest as I genuinely haven’t had an issue with mites. This also goes for my Ant bioactive setups too 😃

    • @AntScapes1
      @AntScapes1  2 года назад

      You could alternatively put the soil in the oven and get any nasties out of it, however, you then loose all of the beneficial bacteria in the soil that helps break things down so it can sometimes be a double edged sword if you think of it that way. Gigas have their own mites too, so are you sure it wasn’t the mites that they naturally have as each millipede normally has a mite specific to the breed ❤️

    • @TheJessieization
      @TheJessieization 2 года назад

      @@AntScapes1 Yeah I know, sadly they weren't the helpful kind causing the problem. Whatever these were kind of attached to the soft spots underneath and didn't move around. Thanks for the advice though, I may have another go at the all natural way again some time soon as I have lots of little babies so will need to be expanding enclosures as they grow anyway :D
