    Instead of blocking ventilation with the cling wrap, I would try watering the soil instead of spraying the air. With all the substrate and leaves in there, the substrate should act like a sponge and the water should evaporate very slowly. Think about it this way- how does a millipedes natural habitat stay humid when there is unlimited airflow? Deep substrate and rain.

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  2 года назад +1

      The soil does get watered but it will still dry out very quickly when there is too much ventilation. Adding too much water when there’s no drainage which you can’t add with millipedes can lead to a lot of mould issues that the springtails don’t keep up with

    I've had ivory milipedes before, but the longest I've gotten one to love is 6 months. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I've had 4 (2 at a time) and the first two, I got huge adults and they passed quite quickly from what I assume was old age but the second time a got a pair that were younger. I kept them in a 5 gallon tank with over half of it being filled with a mix of topsoil, a little bit of play sand, some eco earth, magnolia and oak leaf litter, tiny cork pieces mixed into the soil and loads of cork and more leaf litter on top to climb around on. I would give them fresh veggies regularly (they loved carrots) and mist their enclosure. The male literally just disappeared after two months. After waiting a good few weeks to make sure he wasn't just molting, I went through the enclosure and he literally just wasn't there, then after 6 months, my female who was otherwise doing amazing and growing well just disappeared as well. I know it isn't the lid because there is no way they could have gotten out. It has been almost 2 months now and she hasn't surfaced so it is pretty safe to say she passed. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong and have talked to many people about how to take care of them and done loads of research, so if anyone who reads this has any ideas, please let me know.

      @@Emiology i know this is a super old comment and you probably won't see this, but I figured I'd let you know that out of nowhere my ivory milipede popped up today. It has been over 3 months since she "disappeared". For 2 months I continued frequent misting and added fresh food but I haven't done anything to the tank in over a month now. I guess she was just hibernating/brumating (whatever the milipede for of that is). She is fatter than ever, so she is completely healthy, like nothing happened. I know milipedes are knows for this, but for 3 months?!? I also did end up getting some bumblebee milipedes! I got 3 and there was already a baby in their shipping enclosure the day I got them, so I'm sure their is quite a few more tiny babies! I was so close to throwing out the more arid substrate from the ivory's tank and replacing it with stuff for the bumblebees, but I am so glad I didn't now!

    can someone please explain to me how bioactive works? I am familiar with the concept of the clean up crew digesting any poop and mess but how do you contain the bugs? Especially springtails since they're so small. Can't they just climb out and infest your home at any given moment? Especially rat cages. How do they not just escape through the bars. I understand the acrylic base but then the cage is just open bars. Do you just find the bugs around your house or is it the type of thing where they stay put because they know there's food where they are?

    Hello! Is your snail a fulica or similar? Sorry if you mentioned that in the video, I may have missed it but I had a Madagascar Immaculata, two Immaculata Panthera and one Albino Glutinosa snails - I had an Exo Terra tank, literally the same as yours with coir etc and a heat mat. They spent so much time hibernating because the tank just wouldn't retain heat... I modified the mesh on the roof with some plexi glass stuff but it didn't really make a difference. Though the walls were wet with condensation, the ambient temperature was basically cold like the heat mat wasn't even turned on.
    They came from Bugznbits UK and they were in a RUB container for a short while before I got the Exo Terra terrarium; they were okay in that, it retained the heat but they really started struggling with the cold in the glass terrarium and I had a huge heat mat with a thermostat on it which had a green light and the light went off when the heat mat reached the set temperature that I wanted but it still felt cold.
    I was curious as to whether your snail is a fulica as they seem to do better in terms of lower temperatures and mine all needed a minimum of 26°C which the thermometer was always showing as the temperature being under that so they went back to Bugznbits in the end as I was too stressed with trying to balance their enclosure temperature out etc. They have since been rehomed but I am trying to decide whether a species like the fulica which I think does fine in temps below 25°C would be better to get if I do get snails in the future.
    My snails have since gone to new homes where hopefully the new owners have figured the set up stuff out as I really struggled with that after moving them to the glass one but it was the 60x45x30cm Exo Terra with a full bioactive feature similar to yours and I just felt bad like I wasn't doing the best for them 😕 I tried really hard though to get things right but the temperature was always an issue.
    I hope your snail is doing well and how is your cat doing? We have two kittens that just turned 8 weeks old, they are a funny pair, they spend a lot of time darting around, screaming at me for food when the time comes for dinner and they have started sleeping both on my face and my lap too 😆

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  2 года назад +1

      My snails a archacatina marginata suturalis, all the temperature readings in the enclosure and the humidity readings i get are correct for the species and the tank stays relatively warm because its above my geckos heat lamp. However I have noticed the shell isn't looking the best ever since moving into the exo terra, theres fluctuations / slight ridges which is frustrating that the shell was smoother when I had to keep him in a plastic enclosure that was far too small and not a great setup. Jades Jungle on here has been having recent issues with her snails from Bugznbits not doing well even though shes had the correct temperature and humidity etc so it may be a genetic component too.

    Hello, I just going to set up a millipede enclosure and wanted to ask some questions. I already have a giant African snail enclosure and we use coir blocks for substrate and want to use the same for millipede substrate so is that ok? Also I want to know if it’s ok to go to my local forest to get leaves and rotten wood to treat to give to the millipede? Any advice would be great. Thankyou

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  Год назад

      Coir is not a good substrate for millipedes as it makes up part of their diet you want to have a good top soil with no fertilisers in and then mix it in with rotten wood and leaves to make a substrate. Getting these from the forest is fine just make sure you freeze them first to kill off any bugs that might be on them that could be harmful 🙂

    Where can you purchase a giant african land snail ethically? i am at uni atm and me and my flatmate have rats (Coco, Cream, Chip and Gillian) but i am graduating and moving out of the city in the summer and my flatmate is keeping our babies for us 😢. I will miss them dearly but dont think i could dedicate enough time and energy to rodents when starting full time work for the first time, but i thought maybe keeping a snail would be more manageable.

      I’m not sure! All of the places I’ve seen snails for sale have had mixed experiences, might be best to ask on a giant african land snail group on Facebook for recommendations ☺️

      I follow all the local small animal rescues on Facebook and when they post mice for adoption I apply for them ☺️ sometimes they don’t put them on their website because they get adopted so quick

    i would die to have a huge snail but they're not legal where i live, well I'd die to have rats also but my dad is insane and thinks that I cost to much money, and I guess he just doesn't get joy out of pets. (If you make a joke about money he goes insane and starts to yell and threatens to leave 😬)

    Hi! Idk if you have ever done this before but Would you possibly be able to video chat or something, my mouse isn’t doing very well and I have no idea what’s wrong with her😰 I’m a teenager and I don’t have a job so a vet isn’t a option for me but I really need advice from someone that knows a lot about mice, please let me know if that is something you would feel comfortable doing, I’ve had 2 mice die in the past 5 months and I really can’t handle another death right now , my heart physically hurts seeing my animals like this thank you!!

    • @ThatAnimalHouse
      @ThatAnimalHouse 2 года назад +1

      I’m pretty uneducated on mice so I can’t really help but I just want to say, please don’t get any other pets whiles you are unable to pay for vet visits. If you can’t afford something so important like the vet then I suggest waiting until you can. Lots of deaths and be prevented with vets and it’s just so important to have one for you pet. Especially for a small, prey animal that hides their illness until it’s basically too late.

    Do you have any trustworthy sources of information on snail/millipede sourcing/care you could recommend? From being a rat owner I know a lot of the information you can find is just terrible advice!

    • @Emiology

      Past the initial research when searching for the temperature / tank size / humidity for the species you're interested in I've found that joining (Specifically UK) groups for those animals on facebook very helpful, you can access things that you just can't find when googling, like enclosure inspo, searching up similar problems to what you're having etc. Of course 90% of it is based on peoples personal experiences so should all be taken lightly when applying it to your own animals but I've found those the most helpful :)
