  • Building A Bioactive Terrarium Heaven! (Isopods And Millipedes)
I’ve always been interested in creating a proper bioactive terrarium setup and was kindly gifted the materials to do so by Micro Exotics. This is a mixed species terrarium with pink dragon millipedes (desmoxytes planata), Cubaris marina, dwarf white isopods and springtails (collembola). I slightly alter the terrarium soil which caters towards the inhabitants' need for high humidity. The terrarium substrate contains springtails from a previous terrarium.

I have a terrarium that I have maintained for a little over a year now. I had selected Moss and propagated some of my favorite plants months before I set the terrarium up.After a while I got some isopods. They keep having babies and I have little tiny isopods everywhere. My moss is about a inch high in some places and they are all through it. I noticed that many of them were a white color but now I have noticed some that are bright yellow. The parents look rather normal and I assumed that they would turn the same color as the parents but I have about 3 different groups of babies and the more they have the more colorful they seem to get. I mainly use the terrarium to grow out clippings of my favorite plants.I plan on getting a larger one because I want a couple different species of dart frogs. I actually kept a baby mantis in the one I have for a while, but I ended up letting him go.I really like the native mantis species but I never keep them long. I grow orange trees and some Japanese maple and a bunch of pothos in my basement and I find mantis every year.

Hi there thank you for all your great videos. You inspired me to set up an eco system terrarium with a variety of plants, wood moss and leaf litter then added some isopods and two Ghana millipedes, I love the millipedes and was excited to see the isopods multiplying and all the little babies scurrying around. I add a good mixture of fresh food, cuttlefish bone fish flake and some specialty food. My main problem is they have no devoured pretty much all the plants and the population has exploded! What’s the best plan of action?

Hey there. I'm an onlooker of the isopod hobby, but I'm worried I might have made a rather embarrassing mistake in preparing for a project and would like to get an honest opinion if anyone's willing to hear it out.
So, I've recently been getting materials together to try and make my first "real" tank. I've kept A. vulgare in the past on a low budget, but this is the first time I've prepared for any larger project. About a month back, I purchased a brick of coco fiber and expanded it in advance (with conditioned water of course) in a sterile vertical container. In the time since that month, getting the other components took longer than I had hoped, and I almost never opened the airtight container out of fear of quarantining it from pests.
I'm not completely sure, but I fear the time I took preparing could have allowed anaerobic bacteria to develop due to the factors of sitting water and lack of aeration. Having checked on it today, while it shows no visual signs of contamination and is of the correct consistency, there is a subdued but unusual smell when held closer.
This has me really concerned. I don't have the experience to know whether I'm dealing with a fixable problem or if I've messed up the brick. Searching online has given very lackluster results, so instead I feel that I should turn to someone with much more experience than me. How do I handle this situation? Is it still possible to fix the coco fiber at this point or is it no longer ideal? I hate the idea of just having to throw out the fiber if there's a way I could make it usable again, but if it really does present a serious or unsolvable issue then I'm prepared to do it. I want to give my bugs the best life possible within reason, even if that means I have to prevent mistakes like these.
Do note as well that the tank I eventually planned to introduce the substrate into has springtails, a false bottom, mesh layer and charcoal layer. If at all a factor, let me know how this would factor into that. Thanks in advance if anyone responds to this.

Hey dood, would this style terrarium work for a jungle species of millipede? Millipede from Florida seems fine in plantation soil and some baby’s tears as ground cover. It’s not a cool terrarium or anything, but I plan on making a better one for it.

Is there stuff in bat poop and worm poop that's different from the insects' own poop that makes it good food for them? Like, they can't eat their own feces, right, and get any nutrition from it? Do they eat it, ever, though? Why does the dookie from different species give them nutrients? (This is such a lovely comment, isn't it?)

Do you ever have issues with fungus gnats in your terrariums? I'd love to get into something like this, but gnats are such a consistent problem with my houseplants that I'm not sure how to go about properly supporting an ecosystem like this, especially one with no drainage. This is gorgeous, thank you for sharing!
