"Gimme Sympathy" Lyrics :::
[Verse 1]
Get hot
Get too close to the flame
Wild, open space
Talk like an open book
Sign me up
Got no time to take a picture
I'll remember someday
All the chances we took
[Pre-Chorus]
We're so close
To something better left unknown
We're so close
To something better left unknown
I can feel it in my bones
[Chorus]
Gimme sympathy
After all of this is gone
Who would you rather be
The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?
Oh, seriously
You're gonna make mistakes, you're young
Come on, baby, play me something
Like "Here Comes the Sun"
Come on, baby, play me something
Like "Here Comes the Sun"
[Verse 2]
Don't go
Stay with the all-unknown
Stay away from the hooks
All the chances we took
[Pre-Chorus]
We're so close
To something better left unknown
We're so close
To something better left unknown
I can feel it in my bones
[Chorus]
Gimme sympathy
After all of this is gone
Who would you rather be
The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?
Oh, seriously
You're gonna make mistakes, you're young
Come on, baby, play me something
Like "Here Comes the Sun"
Gimme sympathy
After all of this is gone
Who would you rather be
The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?
Oh, seriously
You're gonna make mistakes, you're young
Come on, baby, play me something
Like "Here Comes the Sun"
[Outro]
Come on, baby, play me something
Like "Here Comes the Sun"
Come on, baby, play me something
Like "Here Comes the Sun"

2023 and remains one of Metric's best songs (especially this acoustic version)
That's how it is. This version is fantastic
I'm of the same generation as Emily and the rest of the band. I've experienced 11 years of war and civil conflict, married, had two beautiful kids, and moved to a peaceful farm in Ontario, Canada. There are times when it feels I've lived a thousand lifetimes and yet when I hear Metric play music, I feel like a five-year-old giggling in my dreams.
africa932003 and now a plague too! 🤷♂️
Awww
Great comment
I learned how to play on my Nintendo switch
Ok but emily 😍 she's a gem.
Metric is under the "music that changed my life" category
Ugh, why did they take this off spotify... so good.
Their acoustic stuff hits me right in a place that i cant describe.
Here in 2022. Just remembered this song out of the blue. Used to watch this vid as a young man feeling the strength of the unknown and now still feel it in the richness of a known way. Self pity gone its more about saying hey recognize me in love like I know we are all made of love
Beatles were insanely popular for a while and their music will stand throughout time, but they ended up resenting each other and broke up.
Rolling stones weren't nearly as popular, but still tour with a huge fan base, and they're still friends who tour together...and most of them are still alive
Her voice is phenomenal!
Fuckin' A.
Here in October of 2019. Toast to you mate, love your taste in music.
October 2020. Its still awesome lol.
@@joshualevy869 here in december 2020 and i wish you all the best bro!
Metric Needs An Acoustic Album. I love this song but i love the acoustic version even more
2019 still here
amen! these and that 2005 concert in France are still like every-other-day in the rotation. that concert especially is great for car jams on the way to work in the early morning.
This version touches me so deeply. I can't explain it. Saw Emily with Metric live in Manchester last week and it was beyond amazing. This track acoustically just blows me away - it's one of my favourite songs of all time already.
"hey man this isn't broken social scene" lol

I normally don't like the acoustic versions of songs, but this is one of the few that is just as good or possibly better than the "original" version of the song.
I can feel it in my bones....
"After all this is done, who'd you rather be? " words to live by.
Emilty Haines has such an awesome voice, Even more so in acoustic settings I think. These types of songs really let her show how great her voice really is.
This is my favourite song.
It was by far one of my favourite moments of the weekend. When the crowd was singing along with her.. it sounded perfect. I could of listen to that song for hours
There is no comment I could leave that would do this song justice.
I didn't even know this existed. I really like their acoustic stuff!
Oh Gawd ... this was 13 years ago ... im getten old
she has the most beautiful voice of any indie rock lead
they captured something with this song especially this version of it. hard to put my finger on it. but i know it when i feel it. it’s like nostalgia and an epic calming greatness put together. love it.
I just realized that "Gimme Sympathy" is a reference to "Gimme Shelter" and "Sympathy For The Devil". Clever.
The whole song is cliches ...should be a hit.
Play me “Something” like “Here Comes the Sun”
10 years ago wow
I can feel it in my bones. :-)
I can't even, too good.
@napkinrings it's in E A D A C# E tuning. Intro+verse chords(get hot..) 002000, 079000, 0-9-11-000, 024000.
Pre-Chorus chords(we're so close...): 054050, 076070 (repeat x2)
The chorus gets complicated, cannot explain it here.
Must song in any sleep playlist
Emily Haines has that warm nice vibe a grandmother has.
this song changes my life
her voice is heavenly ....angelic....i cant help but just listen to this again and again.......till i play again
this song makes me cry
This is hands down among my top three favourite songs EVER.
Gimme Sympathy was the VERY first song I heard from "Fantasies" and it remains one of my favourites. Amazing job on the record!
@SingMeASmile Same.it's just so mellowy and it just soothes me
They sound very nice when it's just the two of them.
I'm an old school guy raised on Zepplin, The Beatles, and The Rollin' Stones.......These guys are amazing. Nice to see people still making "real" music.
her voice is just so calming.
This is the most incredible song I've ever heard! I love the original version, but this one is just perfect 💚💚
Beatles. Hands down. The Rolling Stones are phenomenal, but they never changed the face of popular and recorded music.
They played this acoustically in Toronto last night. Had chills the entire time.
Jimmy is great as usual. Emilie is and sounds absolutlely beautiful.
this is the best version of this song and its no longer available on spotify because capitalism hates me
Wow, this is where you realize what a lovely song this is on all levels.
lovely...lovely...lovely
What a gem of a song
still love this
Fantastic live act. Took my daughter to see them in Atlanta at the tabernacle. Now she is a singer songwriter summer hoop
jesus, something about that voice keeps making me replay it
This song hits different in 2020
beautiful.
they killed it on Monday at the edge studio
the acoustic version is very elegant, her voice is beautiful.
Emily's voice gets me right in the feels
still a beautiful banger in 2017
this is such an eargasm to listen to. play it everynight before bed. just incredible
It's nice hearing the song raw and unmixed. This is how it sounded when it was written and by far the best way to enjoy it.
I like this version much better than the album version. In fact, it was hearing this track on the radio that first made me a fan of Metric. I think all of their songs should be done like this.
even better live. she has the greatest stage presence.
oh god, what for a wonderful version
Beautiful
I love my comment
I can feel it in my bones ....seriously! that this is music made so perfectly it touches the soul....each and everytime u hear it!
I love her smile...
im mesmerized by Emily's voice.
this is music for meditation
They played the acoustic version last night at the end of the concert I went to. It was so amazing!!!! I loved it so much!
*goosebumps*
Metric and some of the best art, performances, and music I have ever heard don't make me smile, laugh or cry, but simply make me shiver in a kind of haunting captivation.
I love it. Can't wait to see them live in September.
Have such a deep rooted love for this song. It kind of helped through something in my life that was scary and amazing and super scary all in the same breath. I took a chance on something called HSCT to halt my multiple sclerosis. The treatment involves chemotherapy. Had to go out of the country away from my family for a medical treatment they don’t provide for ms in the US. Really found a lot of the emotions in this song that I felt through that experience. Metric is one of the most under rated bands ever. Definitely thankful for this song!
This is still so good years later
omg. the first time i heard acoustic of this song. amazing!
love it! love it! love it!
I've just saw this acoustic version live at montreal yesterday, it was just amazing!!
i love this acoustic version. i think it fits the lyrics and tone of the song better
I love the album version, but this is the way "Gimme Sympathy" is supposed to be played. So amazing.
Hearing this again reminds me of their live performance at the Ryman in Nashville, Half Moon Run opened for them and it was such a fun night
no she is not lip synching...she is just amazing!
Acoustic or not the song is amazing. She got a so good voice...just wow :)
Emily Haines is the reason I love music the way that I do.
I love the album. Love the song.
Amazing
Discovered her today. I am now a fan.
this song is so amazing played in acoustic... got no words...
they r amazing...the guitar fits her voice perfectly... music like this keeps me alive!
If you're trying to figure out the guitar part, just before 2:00 is an edit-ed in part, I think (could be wrong!) that's actually the chorus and not the part being played in the song. It gets confusing. There's a version of them playing in California that is easier to follow.
I love how beautiful the songs sound acoustically. I'd like to imagine this is how all Metric songs begin then they rock them up for release. I love the fast versions but love the acoustic more
Sometimes I want something to amp me up, sometimes I want all the feels.
I agree with both of ya'll I feel so at home when I see them live
Metric you are awesome! please come to Chile ! I would love to hear you sing live :D
lovin' the new place yr' in with these new songs!
great lyrics
This is raw and beautiful and full of emotion yet subtle. Love the lyrics.
Grant Hart of Husker Du once said if you play a song on acoustic guitar with just one voice, and it doesn’t sound good, then it’s not a good song. This is a good song.
amazing song xd
love her voice
this is real ART!
i am really nervous for my first date with this girl but this song helped... a lot
very calming and honest
Her voice is so gorgeous. Love this version, loooove her!
omfg what i wouldnt give
It sounds more like a story when it's acoustic. It's what's so magical about Metric, the words don't necessarily create a picture it your head: it's what you can imagine that counts. :)
same here, best moment of my life, dont know how long it lasted, but i think the time stopped
