Secret of the Rubber Band Effect - Disc Golf
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 ноя 2024
- You've probably heard of the rubber-band effect as some magical thing that happens when your timing is exactly to the millisecond perfect, you unlock an ancient power that causes you to throw 600+ like the pros. While timing has a lot to do with it, many people, EVEN IF THEIR TIMING IS PERFECT, can't receive the power that it has to offer, because their THROWING ARM is DISCONNECTED from the power in their body.
In this video, I'm going to show you why the LEFT ARM is the key to connecting your RIGHT ARM to your body and CONNECTING the rubber band, so that once you do get your hips, core, and left arm firing correctly, your right arm will be connected and ready to SLANG that THANG into oblivion.
Thanks so much for watching, I hope this helps you connect the rubber band and nail down your form, increase your backhand distance, and have an amazing time playing disc golf.

This is by far the best explanation of the mechanics of the body when driving. And I've watched a significative percentage of RUclips.
Denis, thank you so much for saying that, I really do appreciate you saying that! I hope it helps you out!
I second this
You’re really setting the standards for teaching proper form in the simplest way! Good job dude
I've been pmaying for years, and this is the first time I've ever had snap. It was SO loud! You are so right in how this is a disc slinging machine! Thanks Ben!
The great part about you is that you're exploring it and finding these breakthroughs and sharing them on your journey. A lot of "masters" of the sport teach tricks that are above and beyond, they don't think about these "basics". Yet for beginners these basics are critical. It's THIS kind of stuff that masters should teach, yet they never think about it since it's already too natural to them.
2 years later it's still one of the best explanations.
I think this is one of the most helpful videos on the internet. Thanks Will Wheaton!
You have a natural ability to teach and demonstrate. I definitely cannot wait to try out your tips this coming weekend. It is very clear that I've been using my arm muscles the entire time which explains why I have such difficulty hitting and passing 300 feet. Thank you!
This is by far the best Description I’ve heard well done just subscribed
I don’t comment on videos. This was sick. Best form explanation I’ve ever heard. Props.
Thanks so much, I’m glad you decided to comment this time! I really appreciate it!!
“Don’t use any of the muscles in your throwing arm.” This should include the pec minor. Took me a long time to realize that’s where all my tension was since it’s not in the arm. Relaxing the pec minor was key to really being able to whip.
I mean I know I haven’t been working out lately but I would necessarily call my pecs “minor” 😉 But no matter how small they are this is a good point!!
Brillant video…i am still a beginner and a bit frustrated bout my drives but i think that this really could help me out. THX!!
Just came across this. Great job explaining every step.
That is amazing stuff. I have never heard it explained that way.
I’m a puller trying to muscle the disc. This changes everything. I finally understand. Thank you for the explanation.
Awesome info. Makes better sense than people just saying don't pull.
“Don’t pull” is very true, but also sort of impossible, and very short of the whole story. Thanks so much for watching!!
This is the best explanation video I’ve seen on this. It finally clicked on my head the importance of the left arm and why it’s important, thank you!!
Thank you so much for saying that!!!
Damn this is golden, cant wait to try it out. I have developed myself a trait to time my shot with my left arm but now it just makes sense what should actually happen from muscle perspective. And I have sometimes just done that upwards no-tensions left arm tuck and now I know why sometimes it feels off. Subbed!
Excellent video and great explanation. I’ve found that you can get the same results from simply thrusting the left hand downward and rotating the hand clockwise. It creates the tension that prevents the disc from hitting my body. 👍
Thanks so much rod! Rotating that hand will stretch those muscles, that’s a good point!
Wow… Very well explained. Understanding the why is vital, now just relearn everything and see if my body can handle it.. Thanks!,
Your helping so much! Thank you.
You really need to be getting payed really well for this kind of information. I wish I would have started my training with your vids. You are freaking awesome bro.
Hahaha idk if that's the case, but I'm so glad that you're finding my stuff helpful, that is forreal the best thing I get out of it!! Thanks so much for the support Brian, you're the man!
No doubt this is a top five explanation of the rubber band effect! Still hard as hell to do but a great video none the less! Thanks Ben!!
It's nice to see a video that explains this concept with a very thought out and detailed explanation. One thing that would be nice to hear from your perspective is how to time this off-arm move with the rotation of your hips. Excellent video! 👍
Hey Qkoosy, thanks so much for watching the video!! I have definitely thought about something like this, because it definitely does have to be timed correctly with the hips, but the video was already pushing 20 minutes so I had to be selective 😂 BUT, in short, I would say just after the start of the hip rotation IN MY OPINION, but love the suggestion of diving in further!
@@BensBigDrive In karate, timing/skills are learned through katas (forms). They start you out with basic katas which are normally performed slowly. As you advance, the katas become more intricate and faster. Your explanation on how to get the feel for this move is along those lines. Like a basic kata.
Breathing. Gotta include the breathing techniques.
Yep, the left arm and left hip are linked closely for RHBH.
Check out Drew Gibson in slow motion.
I wish I could give this video 1000 likes - this is such a great explanation of how to get the right arm doing the right thing, thank you very much! Stumbled upon this at exactly the right time, just when I'm asking myself how on earth you're supposed to get the timing of the right arm, er, right. Thank you!
yes man you nailed this one bcuz i was having the issue too much muscle use and disc would be erratic and too loose and i would destroy my shoulder so this left arm bcuz im RHBH throwing does seem to keep my throwing arm in the right tension.. beautiful man gj and THANK YOU
Awesome!! I will go and work on this right away.!
Thanks Xavier, I hope it helps get you some snap!!!
amazing video, great explanation. I’m very excited to try this. Much love from Sweden
Tack så mycket Jonne! Hej hej! That’s the extent of my Swedish, but from my brief time there the landscape is amazing and the people are even better!
Great stuff, thank you!
Yeah, this video was all it took to get a subscription from me. What great information with something to work on included. It's literally exactly what I was hoping to find. I look forward to coming back to change this comment when my drive has increased from the 280-300 that it's currently at.
Oh wow. Oh wow, oh wow, OH WOW. Huge lightbulb moment for me. I need to go find a field ASAP. Good stuff man.
Thanks so much for saying that Abigor!!! I hope you find some success with it!
I’d been told to use my left side to push my right side through, but was experiencing my arm folding too much. Never thought about keeping the shoulders level! Can’t wait to try this out. Thanks!!!
Awesome Stephen, I’ve definitely had this problem as well in the past. I sure hope it helps and thanks for watching!!
WOW!! This has given me some things to work on. I was in a feild yesterday having these exact questions as I was trying to engage my hip. This is HUGE> Im sure theres a lot of things I also need to work on but this is helpful and gives me something else to focus on and I may be able to turn a corner. HUGE
I dont... I mean I cant... WTF!!! I have been playing (hacking is a better descriptor) on and off for 15+ years trying to figure out what the hell I am doing wrong. Watching endless hours of Paul and Eagle and Rick in slow motion. After watching this video and the plant foot video. I went out and tried it. I cant get it every time, but HOLY COW! When it hits its like magic. There is a audible snap off my fingers and the disc just screams out of my hand like never before. Granted I still need a lot of work because i cant do it every time, but like i said when it all connects it's a beautiful thing to watch and feels almost effortless. Than you thank you thank you for making these 2 videos!
Thank you so much for your comment Barry!! It’s a beautiful moment the first time you get it, it makes it impossible to stop working to get it every time!
Dude, thank you so much!!
Look....I got to 4:50 seconds and I realized this dude was actually speaking to me personally. Apologies to everyone. Thank you for this.
I’ve been waiting for your response, I can’t believe it took so long 😂 thanks for watching!
Dude, I just found your channel tonight and watched through all of your backhand form videos. You explain things so well. I’ve been playing 20 years and just recently decided to figure out the “why” of my game and try to actually better myself. I’ve watched lots of videos, a lot of great videos, but you have a way of explaining things on a more micro level and I already feel like I understand the mechanics and the why of it all a lot better now. I’ll be rewatching often while I continue to improve my form and my game. I’m also excited to be here to see your journey into the pros. Best of luck, I hope to see you competing soon!
Thank you so much for that comment man, I’m really glad to hear that and excited for your game going forward! Thanks so much for the support!
Incredible information! Appreciate ya sharing more of that fantastic knowledge!
Mr. Dagg!! Thanks so much man, I really appreciate you!
love this. Been working on my form this off-season and there was always something small missing but couldn't figure out what it was. Tried this and it all came together. Drives feeling a lot better than ever. Thank you Ben!
That’s my favorite thing ever to hear, I’m so glad that the tips helped you out!! Thanks so much for reporting back!
amazing video and top notch explanations of key points! very impressive!
Thank you so much for saying that!!
This is what 99% of average disc golfers fail to achieve, and 99% of pros don’t talk about.
Everyone discusses the power pocket, but not FEELING the alignment of it.
Simon Lizotte was the first person I ever heard say “rubber band arm” to get me thinking about it.
Watching Drew Gibson in slow motion was my key to understanding the left arm’s role to actually create that effect.
This video perfectly describes how to feel it.
This can also be achieved from lower belt line to navel height swing arcs as well, not just from shoulder height
Thank you so much for saying that!! I think feeling it is the hardest part, I hope it helps in some people actually working it out. Thanks so much for watching!
ruclips.net/video/qOOjIZ1_w8Q/видео.html in this video simon tells us to keep the left arm straight down alongside the body.. im confused
It looks like most pros do the whole “walk around the disc”, and I think most of them seem to use the off arm to stop the disc from that backwards movement. Simon says his disc extends for just a split second, and I think that’s how he stops it is with the swim move. I think The reason most pros don’t teach it, is because they don’t even realize they’re doing it! I took lessons from a local pro who throws a legit 600 feet, and I asked him about it, and he said he didn’t even notice he did anything with the left arm except keep it close to the body.
great video man! Really good explanations! Can't wait to see you on the tour! :)
Thanks so much Mathieu!! I really appreciate the support :)
Great explanation of something I have been trying to work on. Thank you!
Thanks so much!! I hope it helps you out!!
Holy shit I think I just had an epiphany and can now consciously connect my kinetic energy from my body to my arm this is an amazing explanation
I absolutely love to hear that!! Thanks so much for watching and im glad to hear that it helped!!
A one sentence mantra unlocked 10 m for me. At least. Thanks to Ben. "keep shoulders in line"
I used to lower the shoulder of my non throwing arm. Keeping them in line provided more effortless distance.
Thanks so much John, I'm so glad it unlocked some distance for you!! Do you mind if I use this quote for a website I'm building?
Wow this has helped my backhand shots so much! It also takes most of the pressure away from might right shoulder over activating also which was a big prob with my distance shots! Thank you so much!!!
That’s so awesome Noah!! It should keep your arm less sore as well because you’re not grinding on those joints as muscles!! Thank you so much for watching!!!
Great video! Been struggling with getting the rubber band effect, and this should definitely help us all get there! Thanks for the awesome work 😃 can’t wait to see ya on the tour
Thanks so much!! I think everyone struggles with it, but that's why it generates so much power! Thanks so much for your support :)
Would like to see more examples of the explanations put in to practice.
Alright. You got me Ben. I’m subscribed.
Thanks so much Austin, hope you enjoy!!
@@BensBigDrive I applied what you mentioned and it’s a very interesting feeling. It definitely worked too. Easily 425 with what felt like no effort. Very elastic. 👍🏼

Thanks so much for saying that!!
Awesome breakdown. Going to give this a go.
Thank you so much, I hope you get something good out of it!

Thank you so much for the support!!!
great content as always, hope your channel lifts off!
Thanks so much as always Rob!!!
Great stuff! This is super helpful for me as a beginner!!
Thanks so much, I hope it helps you grow in the game!!
Always enjoy the way you present information. As a lefty would like even an honorable mention with at least a one off "right arm for lefties" in your explanations! Thanks
Hahahaha I think I said that in my last video, but I left it out of this time 😂😭 but thanks so much for sticking around anyway William!!
Great video Ben! The shoulder alignment explains why I inadvertently rocket the disc way too high when I have been tucking my left arm down at my side 😂
Yes definitely!!! I had the same problem when I was working this out for myself! Thanks for watching!
Great stuff! High quality content!
Thanks so much for watching Allan!!
This is really good

Thanks brother!
Thank YOU for watching!
So I've been trying to fix my arm this year cause I wrap my right arm into my left shoulder all the time when I drive. Now I've been doing it for like 8 years and can throw like 350 accurately but I'm using all right arm and it hurts my tricep plus I'm missing out on so much power. You explained this so well. I will try more to keep improving.
That’s awesome to hear, I really hope this helps add some distance but most of all takes some stress off of your arm. Thanks so much for watching!!
nobody talks about scapula protraction. but it is essential to stretching those back muscles and creating the tension needed for the rubber band effect. it also has the added benefit lengthening your arm out and away from your torso. longer levers+ more back tension= more distance.
I did have to google what that meant but I think that is a great point, the back muscles can’t really be stretched out if the shoulder isn’t protracted like that, you would run into some slack there that would throw it all off. Thanks for the input, that’s a really good take!
great video! thank you!!!
Thank YOU for watching Justin!!
That mosquito bite analogi is very clever. I dunno how you come up with these things, but theyre great
Thank you so much for saying that!! And many many hours in the field is the secret 😂 but thanks so much for the support!
Amazing video with a game changing tip. I can do it in a standstill, I’m just curious of how to incorporate the concept into an x-step. I’ve been practicing leaving the disc in place and moving around it as I walk up. Do you have a video or can you suggest one that would explain the opposite arm concept and putting it into a walk up? Thank you for your time making this great content!
Been trying to figure this out for months... Hopefully I can remember this video when I play next.
Take it out to the field and do some practice!!! Thanks so much for watching!
Very well explained.
Its interesting to feel the tension in triceps even thought not muscling it.
Tried couple of times in middle of room and Wow. Some of the tries produced electrifying/hot feeling in fingertips. ⚡
And almost ruined my wall when I tried slowly with disc. It wanted to get free of grip. 😅
Seems like I mostly tried to muscle the right arm. Cant wait to try this out on discgolf course.
Thanks for the great video. 😁
Hahahaha disclaimer: don’t try indoors!! Thanks so much Jānis, I hope that translates to some bombs out on the course, good luck!!
Awesome Video!! Your content is gold
Thank you so much Sean!!!
@@BensBigDrive I have spent all week working on this.... massive improvement in my consistency and power.
@@seanfrench1599 that’s amazing Sean, those are my favorite comments ever!!! Thanks so much for taking the time to report back!
Great physiology lesson, makes total sense. Even though I’ve already been focusing on what my left arm is doing, it’s way better to understand why/what the body’s doing Back there. And maybe the left arm should be taught to beginners right from the start; it may seem like too much info at the beginning, but since it is critical for what drives the disc, I think it should be included.
For example, my wife is now getting serious about disc golf, a year and a half after I started. She’s just doing stand-still throws, but wondering why I can throw 100 feet farther (also from stand-still) than she can when we are the same height and she is quite athletic. I’m gonna get her left arm driving for sure!
Thanks for this good stuff, you will get there Ben!
Thanks so much for your comment Peedrow! You raise a great point and one that I’ve thought about a lot with many other things like footwork and hip alignment and what to teach beginners, but to me it’s a real judgement call. If someone is eager to learn from the beginning, I’ll teach them everything I know, but others need a way more basic approach to be convinced it’s gonna be fun. But I hope you and your wife tear it up!!
Excellent!
Thanks so much Kent!
@@BensBigDrive I was excited to share this tip with my good friend and competitor. I have 4 seasons of playing and watching tutorials. Your video belongs in an elete category. Please keep these videos coming. Thank you.
Throwing putters is still the best way to train this. Keep a 90 degree angle with forearm to upper arm. Keep arm loose but have a firm grip for speed.
One of the best teaching ive seen on the subject ! Is the speed at wich we stretch important? Can I slow down the motion to work on it and then transfert it to my drive ?
Thank you so much for saying that! And that’s a great question, I would say that you can definitely slow it down, but it needs to be one fluid motion. So as fast as you’re gonna rotate to throw it anyways is how fast you want to do the tuck, don’t slow anything down or speed anything up to try it out, but that’s why it helps to know what it feels like before you try and throw it so that you can know what you’re looking for and work out how to time it in your throw. I hope that helps!
Just went to the field and got several about 40 feet further. Going to take some getting use to for sure as I feel it out. But a few clicked, though awkward haha
I've said it before, and I will say it again... That intro, BUMPS!
Grimey a River by Sam Barsh, an absolute jam!!!
Your vids and advice are just fantastic man. These are the types of things I wish I knew earlier on in my disc golfing!
As you’re turning towards the target, are you still actively moving the disc into your chest? Not a pulling motion but like a closing of the elbow if that makes sense? Or is the disc moving into the chest simply a product of creating this tension correctly?
Thanks so much for saying that man!!! And great question, your arm should fold into your chest naturally, your arm at full extension should be as lose as possible, and then the rotation of your body naturally folds it in as it lags behind. It takes practice but it’s where the power comes from! Thanks again!!
Just recently solved the reach back...and how it is less of a reach back and more of the body moving forward of the disc sitting stationary in the power zone during run up. Now to get the left arm on board...
That’s what I’m talking about!! You’re more than halfway there!
@@BensBigDrive Not even lying...I have put on at least 40 feet with the concept alone. I suspect I will hit or finally break 400' this Summer. As a 47 year old man 37 years late to the game...I am super stoked.
@@xzysyndrome dude 40 feet is absolutely massive! Keep me posted as to how it goes!
Really great video man, so well explained. Just one question, do you have advice for keeping your throwing arm loose while also keeping a good grip? I find that most of the tension in my throwing arm comes from my forearm/grip and I don't know how to loosen it. Maybe I'm gripping too hard?
Thanks so much Ian!! And great question, the way I would explain it is that your right arm muscles should only be engaged enough to hold it up, and to hold the disc up, so if you feel like your grip is tensing up your arm, try changing it up to find a way the disc is more easily supported by your hand. Also, gripping too tight encourages pulling because you’re so tense, so I would try to relax it and see if that helps!
All other double move videos
“Do a double move”
Ben’s big Drive
“Actually explains how”
Can I just use an arm sling and keep my left arm tucked all the time? Would that work?
Makes sense
Great job on the vid and explanation!
Do you have suggestions for those that are having trouble feeling the stretch? I watched this several times and really can't seem to feel that stretch...
Rotate your body faster,
bend your knees
Thanks so much Matt!! I would say that A. Make sure you’re shoulders are level B. Make sure you’re keeping your right arm loose, and then when you get into that “test” position i mention in the video, really exaggerate how far you’re trying to reach back with your right arm, and if you’re set up correctly the “stretch” you feel is the fact that in that position it’s impossible to collapse that right arm across your chest. Also focus on curling your shoulders inward when your arms are up at shoulder height, those upper back muscles are the ones you’re trying to stretch to the max. I hope that helps!
@@BensBigDrive tyvm!
Thx Ben🙂
Thanks for watching Jimmy!
Hey ben love your show quick question: I’m lefty so can you make a new video for lefties to understand more clearly? I’ll hang up and listen
Hooahh, I no joke thought about you every time I said "right arm" but decided to just go with it because you said you were used to translating it and I assume you speak for all lefties. But anyways, I appreciate the comment, nice to hear from you!
@@BensBigDrive another lefty here. I am used to translating things. Unfortunately it seems like right handed people aren’t and it makes it very confusing for me to explain things.
The urge not to pull is so hard to overcome. It’s a daily struggle
Any recommendations on how to keep the shoulder down? Mine goes up every time from muscle memory.
Hey Jake, one thing that has always helped me keep my shoulders level was standing up straight just as if I were walking down the street. This makes it easier to keep your weight controlled throughout your walk up, and a lot of times our shoulders change angles because our weight is either too far backwards or too far forwards. The other thing could be your reach back, if you're reaching back too far your shoulders have to change angles to allow for you to stretch as far as you're reaching back. I hope that helps!
Hey,
How would you describe the technique of backhand approaches based on your video: Standstill (40m-70m) and one-step throwing (70m-100m)?
Hey Sander! This is a great question, and you’ll see that the best players in the world (Paul McBeth specifically) use this same method of using the left arm in basically every backhand throw no matter how short, standstill, one-step, etc. BUT, it is obviously less aggressive because he’s not throwing as far. Watch Paul mcbeth do some backhand approaches and see if that helps!
Big Ben! Another great video! You’ve already added 10-15m on my throw RHBH with the plant leg video. This information makes total sense to me and I can’t wait for lunch break to go try it out! Threw my personal best yesterday. 113m flex shot. I know this video is going to add some distance.
Better get back to work before I get caught!

I don't feel it in my biceps or triceps but I can feel it on my chest and shoulder muscles big time. Am I doing it wrong?
Edit: Maybe I don't feel it because I can feel it more from other places. Idk but this is a good video nonetheless and will try it out.
The only thing I could think of is that when you tuck your left arm that left shoulder is dipping down which would cause you to feel it in your shoulder and chest, but I hope that helps anyway and thanks for watching!
@@BensBigDrive should my left shoulder dip up instead or dipping down is correct?

I've watched tons of form stuff and it all gets kind of micro- goofy to me at some point - no goofiness detected here though, I've not seen the concept laid out this way, in a way that makes sense.
Yes, love the SpongeBob reference.
My biggest personality trait
Thanks Ben. Mystery solved w/ a crystal clear explanation. Another mystery for me is, how do you grip the disc w/ enough strength to deliver it but keep the arm loose at the same time? Practice , i guess :o)
This is a great point, I rely a long on the power grip because it holds itself in place very well with not a whole lot of effort, but for other grips I would just say that the more comfortable it is in your hand, the less forearm energy you’ll have to put into it and the lass you’ll tense up the throwing arm. But thanks so much for watching!!!
What about Simon and GG, they do not do this and the are two of the biggest bombers?

Not much, how about you? Thanks for asking!
