As a beginner, this channel has become my favorite thing to use for my research. After hurting my shoulder last year while trying to yeet the disc with poor form, I've been a ton more careful about my approach. Thank you so much for this info!!
I’ve definitely been there with shoulder issues, I hope some of this helps you take some stress off. And “yeeting” might be the best way to describe the most common problem in disc golf 😂 but thanks so much for your support, I really appreciate it!!
I just had an epiphany (I hope). 15 minutes a go. I was throwing putters in the warehouse and trying to engage my core and left side. I gave up and then just started focusing on my right elbow (one thing at a time). There's a spot about 8" in front of my front foot that is in line with my throw. I focused on hitting that spot with my elbow. Suddenly everything started working. Gonna try this after work on my practice field. IDK, it just feels right. I mean if I hit that spot, it's impossible for me not to spin on my front foot.
Thanks so much John, that’s the biggest goal of these videos is to get people to FEEL it so that hopefully they can make it happen. I appreciate your support!!
Best DG channel by far on the Tube. Such incredible tips and presentation, with great editing and humor. Thanks Ben. I tore my right bicep from practicing way too much backhand with bad form and then playing long rounds with friends afterwards. Now I’m throwing lefty and with these form tips, I’m throwing 350’ drives and getting better each day with zero muscle/tendon soreness .
Thanks so much for saying that Ry guy, I’m so encouraged that you’re getting something out of this and even being able to play through injury. You’re gonna be hard to stop with righty and lefty backhand when that bicep heals up!!
I am very hesitant to pay someone for lessons. They would first have to explain it just like you have in your videos before I would trust their advice. So many people do clinics and don’t know this info. Thanks for doing these videos! They are awesome. Good luck on your quest.
This is gold! And this is a noob issue I and many other new players seem to have. Regarding Anhyzer and leaning back, this I'd be cautious of. I hurt my back doing Anhyzer like this. I'd think better to adjust angle of wrist and make sure you follow throug "downwards" to put the disc on annie.
Happy Easter Ben, Link it together, that is - power from the hips, add the power from the core, and into the explosion phase!!! Yet another excellent video, you are definitely more than great at explaining and demonstrating disc golf concepts for better play, keep your videos coming, looking forward to more to be sure. Gene Senior Disc Golfer
Happy Easter to you Gene!! Thank you so much for your comment, I really appreciate you following along and hope that these videos improve your game. Thanks so much for the support!
Sad that the clinic got canceled but not, because it was league night. Will be attending the reschedule! This video really clicked with some issues i have been having with my throw. Appreciate ya!
Hey, your off-arm video really unlocked something for me. Thank you. I'm still not yanking 'em out there, but I was definitely pushing 300, which is huge for me. I've been wanting 300 for a long time now. Looking forward to this video!
Hey Abigor, thanks so much for your comment and I’m so glad that using your left arm has unlocked something for you, I’m sure you’ll get to 300 soon no problem!! Thanks for watching!!
This is GOSPEL. Not having body awareness of your torso/spine/"axis of rotation" and failing to keep it straight and perpendicular to your line of throw is, imo, the number one issue preventing most beginner/intermediate players from getting both distance and consistency. Getting that torso straight also makes the throw feel more effortless, which it should be. You explained it here perfectly! If I wasn't already subbed, I'd sub again, and again, and again. Preach it BBD!
Thanks so much for saying that Ben (nice name), it is a super common problem but it took me forever to find out how to put it into words, I'm very glad you enjoyed!! Thanks so much for the support!!
Thank you for these videos! As someone who is trying to move from beginner to more advanced, this is really helping me become more self aware of my form and how I can improve it. Keep it up!
This is super helpful. Describing the core, using green and red lines to align the body visually, and I definitely think that my core is absorbing some energy because only on occasion am I throwing 300ft right now, so I am gonna save this video and pull it up for my next field work sesh.
Great video, never realized I wasn’t utilizing my core at all which would make me upper body teeter totter adding that drill with a walk up I noticed engaging my core kept my body in line, great video as always!!!
Good advice on keeping the body upright! However, with the twisting drill I would've liked to you emphasize more how we don't want the core muscles to actively generate movement, just to resist movement. It's the act of resisting the twisting of the hips that generates that feel of stretch so we mainly want a healthy (not exaggerated) tension in the core through the throwing motion. Don't want to see people go and try to actively twist from the core as that only leads to loss of power and a higher risk of back problems.
Ben, I love your videos. We seem to be around the same age, same skill, and think about the same things in a throw. I am rooting for you to become a pro. I'm liking and commenting on videos to hero the algorithm and help you. Hopefully youtube can become full time for you, then eventually disc golf full time and youtube part time. My goal is to tour as well, and I will remeber this comment and bring it up the day we both play on the same pro card. Best of luck man, keep up the good work
Thanks so much for the support Andrew, I am also rooting for you on your journey as well!! I hope to see you on a card some day on the road, I look forward to it! You’re the best, I appreciate you!!
I needed this one. Didn't realize the power I am losing due to improperly engaging my core until now. I have a video idea / request for you: Height control. I've not seen any RUclips videos analyzing the mechanism for consistently controlling the disc elevation. How does one throw higher, say for a full turnover shot. Or throw lower for a downhill shot. Is my height control limiting my distance? Is this done through the angle of your shoulders? etc... Thanks!
Caleb my dude!!! Good to hear from you! Thanks for the suggestion, that’s something I haven’t done a deep dive on yet and I think it would be really interesting. Thanks for the support, I appreciate you!
BTW, great video. I'm at the office so I tried your core exercise while sitting on a stool. Feet flat on the ground. It felt good. I think I may try trowing some discs while seated. (randome thought. Is there a disc golf course somewhere for wheel chair bound people?)
Shortest distance between two points being a (straight) line is only true in Euclidean space, which ours (approximately) is locally, but definitely not globally. That's essentially the point of general relativity. Also, the general term for a shortest-path is a geodesic! (I know this is totally unrelated to what you're talking about, but I my education is in math, and I like to share it when I can! Cheers Ben, thanks for all the help!)
Ben, this is Lucas, coming to you from my burner account. What kind of core workouts would you encourage an up and coming pro like myself to do in order to throw further? Thanks
Lucas, this is Ben, coming to you from my real account. Two things really help me out, Russian twists will help you get your obliques involved and familiar with the motion, and then planks will strengthen those lower back muscles you might not used to be using. Also, hyperextensions are great for stabilizing your lower back as well. Great question Lucas!!
DON'T TELL ME TO CAL- sorry.. What magic do I learn to keep finding new, relevant information like this, video after video, that nobody else is talking about? Great video!
Great advice! I was able to get out in the field after winter and my form felt weird after a not throwing for so long. I straightened everything up like this and saw instant results (easier motion too). Not sure if you’re ever in MN but I’d love to play a coaching round if you’d be down! 🤘
Quoting the drill sergeant from Forrest Gump: "God da**it Ben, you're a godd*mn genius!" Really helpful and outstanding video! Been trying out the exercises and it made me realize how off my core was during the whole motion! This tip has been working wonders! Keep up your amazing job! Cheers!
Loving your approach to teaching and breaking things down.! I feel like my pull through is even with my chesticles, not my shoulder.. that seems high to me?
Thanks so much for saying that!! And for sure, that is definitely flexible, the only thing that matters is that you can get the pull through without engaging the right arm muscles. Your chesticles are fine by my account
So do you think we should use our abs active in a throw or not? Its pretty hard for me whenever teachers are talking about the core, 'use your core' Because i have tried it, and it gives me more power when im crunching my abs, but is it the right way, or should i try to keep abs as relaxed as possible?
Great vid, but you should have mention that you need to bend at the hips instead of your waist to do a hyzer throw so you dont loose that vertical spine.
chatgpt says mechanically speaking your elbow should NOT be vertical with your shoulder on reach back it said it should be slightly pointed down and makes sense bcuz it feels much smoother to do..
Expert play on the sweat stains 😉 and big secret (that’s just a black shirt over a hoodie) BUT I will definitely consider merch in the near future!! Thanks so much for the support!
Great content. I've spent years throwing bent over. Trying to focus on being straight as I throw. Now about my happy feet on runup. Thoughts on throwing from a standstill?
Thanks so much Ethan!! Slowing it down will help a lot, and I love standstills, what’s important there is shifting your weight without throwing your body out of alignment, if you get that down it’ll be much easier to do in a walk up!
Ethan, its still tge same power or even more power by bending forward abit. Problem is that you need to do it the right way, bebding at the hips instead of waist with a straight back, pushing your butt out. Thats what Ben meant.
Love the content! Makes alot of sense! Just one question, i use my upper body to create hyzer and anhyzerlines for more consistency, rather than making angles with the wrist. Does this theory still work, with using upper body for angles?
Hey Pål-Andre! Thanks for watching! Great question, and I mention that towards the end of the video right at the end of the outside bit, but yes that is a great way to control your angles as long as you keep your upper body aligned while you do that. Thanks so much for watching!
Maybe a silly question, but do you focus on rotation your hips and core as you throw? Maybe I’m overthinking this. I just wanna throw further. As we all do
Hey there! Great question, just like with anything else, you should focus on it in practice until it becomes second nature. So you probably will have to focus on it for a while until it becomes natural. Thanks for watching!
I'm having trouble connecting dots here. It seems that many many pros are definitely slouched or bent and not standing vertically. And they don't seem to be getting injured and also seem to be throwing 500+ So maybe what you're saying is to practise in a vertical position and then learn how far you can take your body in my compromising position after mastering throwing vertically?
