My uncle has carved birds for like 35 years and my parents have many of them. Its nice to see his progression over the years. He did a life size beaver for a governor of NY i think. I forgot the story. His biggest was a 6 foot wingspan eagle and that was a few years ago. He is in his 80s and still loving it! He retired years ago and carved now and then for fun. Then around 6 years ago he went to the dentist and they got talking about birds and how he carves. So one thing led to another and i think that was when he got the 6 foot eagle commission. After that the dentist told his buddies and now my uncle is back at it. I plan to get into now as well. I was always interested and just got inspired after looking around Etsy. I like to paint landscapes but i miss the 3D aspect. I loved taking a pottery class in college and i think wood would be very therapeutic. I love the composition you have here with the flower. Very original!!! My uncle usually uses drift wood.
Thank you for taking the time to make this comment. That is really cool that he is still at it. If I am still going at his age I will be 70 years in. I often carve the base first and then make the subject to fit it.
What did you use to carve into the head to get a deep smooth 'cut' from the beak to past the eye socket. I'm carving a long tail finch for my father for fathers day and I don't want to botch it and it is taking a while. and did you use the flame tip for the rest of the smooth shaping, like head and neck areas? it is so smooth and clean.
Itsi O I used the flame bit but them got the smooth shape/finish with sandpaper. By folding it over a few times you get a rigid slightly rounded edge that you can do some shaping with.
Flame bit is a diamond bit correct? I am having a hard time finding professional tips for my carving. Any suggestions on sites I should check out? Also, I figured out how to shape it in time for painting for Father's Day. - Long Tail Finch
Itsi O yes it is a diamond. I believe this is it mdiwoodcarvers.com/products/swiss-diamond-flame1 I get the majority of my supplies from them. Glad to hear you got it done in time!

This is really good. It is your best video to date and a fine carving to boot. It is such a thorough and interesting explanation of the process.
Thank you! That means a lot coming from you. I put a lot of time into both.
