All the hard work built up over the years, from the original Xbox and Xbox 360, the trust and brand power, gone in one single reveal event in 2013.
It's frightening how true that is. Xbox could have blew the PS4 away and dominated this generation, but that's not the reality we live in
That was never going to happen. If Microsoft could only manage essentially a tie with Sony during the 360 and PS3 era, they weren't going to blow Sony away with both releasing at the same time. Also Sony has quality studios so people buy their systems to play games from their studios.
Murphdawg1 gaming Your forgetting a certain factor: Appeal. The Xbox brand is predominantly appealing to American consumers whereas the PlayStation and Nintendo brands have appeal on a worldwide scale. That difference is night and day.
ElusiveWonder If you think about it, it's kind of a good thing. Last generation since the Xbox 360 was in a much better position than the PlayStation 3, they really didn't have to rely that much on exlusives. All they pretty much relied on was Halo, Gears, And 3rd party marketing deals. Being behind Sony this generation is forcing Microsoft to really make pro consumer moves and open new studios to produce big budget exlusives. If Microsoft was as successful this generation as they were last generation, none of these big moves would have happened.

I’m late to the party. But I’ve noticed, myself included, a lot of people switched from Xbox 360 straight to PS4
They completely misjudged what gamers wanted.
They thought Call Of Duty would be enough to get the "core gamers" and they thought some weird voice and motion controls to spare you some button presses where enough to convince casuals to spend $500 on this box.
I even remember an interview with some Xbox exec who talked about Xbox One selling 400mil up to 1 billion units. They were literally delusional. They probably thought they had something like the Wii, where they create their own new market with their vision of the living room hub.
But this vision was so bad, not even today most of the things have caught on even though you can get similar hub boxes for 30 bucks already. Its just not that convenient to talk to your TV.
But given how fast they abandoned that vision I think there wasn't much confidence behind that vision in the first place.
Sadly it still ruined their generation, because they were still stuck with barely competitive hardware and since their prior vision didn't focus on exclusives beyond Halo, Gears and Forza, they fell horribly far behind the competition when it comes to first party studios. The effects of that are visible now and will be visible for years to come.

Janice from Accounting the biggest problem M$ has is that they never able to remove all 343 Industries managment even the failure of Halo franchise. If it would be like bungee and a Halo game strong as Halo 3 then feri probably Xbox would sell a lot more unit.

Even as a Playstation fan I’m happy to see someone like Phil Spencer as the head of xbox, he’s doing great things and I believe it will only get better.

Omar Shehab those are quality sony owned studios with lots of talent, add to that the freedom Sony allows those studios to do basically whatever they want, Microsoft doesn’t have anything like that at the moment, these things take time. Also I think you might have missed the part where I mention that I’m a Playstation fan :)

Austin Luna Don Mattrick also only listened to the hardcore Shooter Crowd which is probably why the Xbox Brand has that Stigma now. Don Mattrick has hardly ever mentioned a single Japanese Game for the Xbox One because he was more focused on those Shooters

I remember watching this live back in 2013 and was literally in awe at how bad Mattrick and team fucked it up..never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be that bad. Then the Sony spot with "this is how we handle used games", along with the price difference and everything else and I knew this generation was over before it even started.

I love phill spancer sure he has made a few mistakes but he has definitely made the console a whole lot better. I am sure it'll get even better over time. We have to wait a while and see what these new exclusives brings to the table in a few yrs from now!
Here hoping Xbox makes a big comeback this next gen with Xbox series X. They need to come back swinging after the PS5 reveal. I know they've learned from the past.
PRICE & GAMES
Its was not more power that made me go PS4 !! It was more power for "$100 less". It made it feel like Microsoft was over charging and ripping off its fans. Then the excuses that the connect was powerful and cost $150 but when they removed it from the bundle it only lowered the price $100?? Another rip off. The PlayStation camera was $100 and dropped to $59 later.
Ive posted this on many other videos that talk about this issue. So I gotta add it here as well.
Microsoft/Xbox also was hit with what I call, "3rd Consolitus". All of the major console companies in the last 25 years flubbed their 3rd console. Seemingly they all got arrogant because they were so successful with their 2nd console.
Nintendo had N64, Sega had Saturn, Sony had PS3, and finally Xbox had Xbox One.
They all got so fat headed, they thought their fans would stick with them no matter what. No matter how much better the console may have been, or what they added. None of those 3rd consoles could match the success of the previous console and inevitably dropped in popularity because of it .
Sony was probably the only one that was able to turn their initial failure around with PS3. They did eventually match(maybe exceed?)the Xbox 360 in hardware sales. And that led them into a good starting point to challenge Xbox with the PS4. They kind of turtled to win the race eventually. While Microsoft took a nap.
As a longtime console buyer and player, having owned most of them up to that point, (Disclosure: never got 360 or N64) but it was kind of fascinating to see Microsoft fall to the same problem.
I didn't buy an Xbox one original until February 2015, and I was very satisfied with my purchase as I got the Assassins Creed bundle then. I had a lot of fun with it. Now I own both the Xbox one X and S sitting right beside each other. I'm an extremely happy Xbox gamer.

A former xbox employer has come out and spoke about working in very bad environment with MICROSOFT and xbox which lead to him leaving and working for Activision, and he has said phil Spencer is Stressed out and under so much pressure he feels sorry for phil Spencer, because the Xbox team has no idea what's happening.. it's a big mess... and he has also said there are big problems with developers not wanting to partner or work for Microsoft... and the first party developers are always fighting with MICROSOFT... about making game's.. Man I don't know what's going on over at Microsoft.. but phil Spencer is feeling it.. the former employer has left before e3 2018 and has said if it don't go well for Xbox at e3 phil Spencer is going to step down or be fired one of the 2.. this is all from a former Xbox employer

This event and the How to share videogames on PS4 video, pretty much ended the "console war" of that generation without even begin it. I truly believe the upcoming july event for Microsoft will determine the future of the brand, they need to bring it.
I knew people that refused to get both Xbox One and PS4 and stuck to 360 till they changed it.

Well said, I could not agree more. That reveal was such a let down for me, I remembered being in disbelief that the Xbox ONE was not a truly video game console but a multimedia device. I hope this year's E3 Xbox event blows us away with many suprises, I hope they lower the price of the ONE X.
Don't forget though Rand, Don Mattrick already had things solved for you if you couldn't be online all the time! "fortunately, we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity, it's called Xbox 360."

It's been different ever since Phil Spencer took over and the One X came out. It's only a matter of time before the power of the Series X starts to show and you get the more powerful console. The only thing left is to fix Xbox's stupid adding/follow friend system.

@@Ryan-uu8oz That's only partly true, Nintendo lives off its exclusive titles and services like the switch being portable or Pokemon or Smash, but in an even playing field like when a person wants to play Minecraft or Skyrim, performance does matter especially in today's market would consumers are more aware of power and spec differences and want the ultimate experience, if I wanted to play skyrim I would buy a Series X due to nonexistent loading times and better potential vs the switch whose performance is trash(compared to the Series X) and PS5 which has little mod support. It's about services and exclusives and power, those are the big three when it comes to consoles, price is also a factor, but their all relatively cheap and similar in price, also a dedicated gamer won't look at the price. Xbox definitely has won the power fight, which is the hardest to set up every console generation, now they need to pump out great exclusives, as for services, xbox isn't ever going mobile(albeit gamepass for mobile games is a thing) but it is cross platform being integrated with PC gaming, and is more open to ideas like having a better Minecraft and more mods and such, Xbox Live is worse then PSN now but it's not a big difference. As for exclusives which is arguably the biggest, xbox has no exclusives at all, and by the time Halo Infinite releases GOW Ragnarok and a bunch of other god tier titles would have been released for PS and the Switch, but I believe that will change with the recent purchase of Bethesda, and we will see ES6 being an Xbox exclusive for at least a year.
@@MISTAKEWASMADE4live Not entirely true, while yes, the Switch portability is a factor to many gamers, it's exclusives are really what carries it. Also, power is not a console gamer's main concern. If it was, they'd just purchase a gaming PC instead. My $1000 gaming PC outperforms both consoles new consoles. And it's actually cheaper than the PS5 and Xbox Series X in the long run.
As for ES6 being an exclusive; it's not. Microsoft has already stated that they will not have exclusives. They will have games that are either timed exclusives or shared with gaming PC. That alone eliminates the entire community of PC gamers as potential buyers for the New Xbox. That's hundreds of millions of PC gamers without a motivation to buy the Xbox Series X.
Xbox has most definitely lost the power, exclusive and service fight. PlayStation and Nintendo has the exclusives fight won. And gaming PCs have the power and service fight won. And yes, gaming PCs most definitely count seeing as they're gaming platforms as well. At the end of the day, Xbox is only really offering secondary best on most categories, while not even qualifying in others.
Xbox is going out like the Sega brand back in the mid 90’s....I’m calling it. They’re doing the same stupid shit Sega was doing boasting about graphics(Bits back then) and focusing more on hardware than games. I would even compare the Kinect and their over devotion to entertainment to Sega’s insistence that people really wanted to literally play FMV movies with the Sega CD

I was like you, a HUGE Xbox fan. I ended up switching over to PS4 when it launched. Lol, Mattrick/Medhi and their crew fucked up the launch and original vision for the Xbox One so bad I couldn't believe it. Years later we are still feeling the ripple effect of this disastrous reveal.

No. They did it based on the metrics collected from 360 users. Throughout the last few years of the 360's life the usage numbers showed that ppl were using their 360s for gaming less than 50% of the time and the One was designed according to that feedback. It wasn't just Mattrick, but those overseeing the xbox division from on high that allowed the One to be created as the TV TV TV TV TV sports TV TV games TV TV TV mess it turned out to be.
I was a hardcore Xbox fan but when this happened and the PS4 event happened I instantly switched over to them.
M$ change Xbox management team like they change clothes. Where are the original Xbox management crew?? Kevin Bachus, Seamus Blackley, Ted Hase and Otto Berkes. If this keep happening, there will be another Don. Just a matter of time.

To this day xbox one still needs to be online because you cant look at your achievement or earn them offline. the 2013 revail it was sad. if xbox were to made the kinect a stand alone product and didnt have the drm or always be online features it would have sold more xbox ones then it has of today. I wish xbox release an update that lets you look at your achievements and earn your achievements off line like the xbox 360 did
I'm with you on that one, even for the BC games. You earn them offline, but your process on them wont update on the percentages.
Literally everything they hyped in the reveal event is gone, that is a huge indicator that they screwed up and had no idea what the consumer wanted.
The only thing is miss is the snap feature to watch something while grinding long or boring achievements.

I owned an Xbox one from 2014-2015 and sold it. haven't replaced it yet nor will I until they are $100. The only games I even wanted the system for became available on PC with better ports. However my PS4 and WiiU and Switch I continue to buy games for and enjoy much more than the Xbone. IMHO the Original Xbox had the best Xbox Exclusives.

The Xbox One reveal will always be the day Xbox changed forever and they’ll never get back to that again.
This one reveal ruined microsoft's entire generation. Looking back at it though, it may have been the best thing to happen to Xbox. After the disaster that was the xbox for the first few years, microsoft finally decided, "Hm, let's appeal to our customers" and has been doing some really cool stuff lately that's making Sony look bad in some cases.
The xbox brand was never going to beat the playstation look at the xbox 360 it lunched 1 year earlier than the ps3 and was cheaper and ran multiplat games better and yet the ps3 still ended up outselling them why? Because sony owns 15 first party studios and were pumping exclusives left and right and Games like the last of us are still till this day being praised by ALL GAMERS, Now ps4 is king with all the exclusives and the gamers have spoken.
Thank god we have Phill! Next Gen X is nothing like Xbox one!

Look im all about xbox, and ps4 is secondary to me, i love xbox, i played it since the original xbox but i see only one more xbox coming, and then its over. Not investing in the next xbox, goin to ps5 because i dont want to invest into a dying console.

Xbox is one with mediocrity and below backwards compatibility is cool but they made a powerful console for old ps 2 games and creating "sea of endless not much to do" and a glitchy state of decay 2 piece of real crap. Nothing new nothing innovative at all poor shit quality that shouldn't even exist! PlayStation exclusives quality product should be the standard instead... Of course the exclusives keep being exclusives, if just Xbox could make their own nice decent good quality content lineup that'd be cool..

I was a ps fan for my whole life and the only reason I got a Xbox is to play with my friends but we was so impressed by the ps5 reveal that they who played Xbox for 13 years + are moving to ps now
Don Mattrick is hated and very notorious for botching the Xbox One reveal, but he was competitive and very hungry. Phil Spencer is none of these things. I respect him for cleaning up the Xbox One mess, but he's the least competitive president Xbox ever had and he needs to go. I'm not saying bring back Don Mattrick, but we need someone ready to go out there and snatch up big studios and push PlayStation to their limits. The people running Xbox right now can't do that.

Phil is a nice guy, but by no means will he not get big studios. He’s a gamer that congratulates his competition, and with competition, means more games (ex. Fable 4 because HZD). Why would he not get games on the console? That’s the biggest focus on the console.
E3 2018 will be his spotlight (it has been 3 years), and if he disappoints, my opinion will change.

I have an xbox one s and I cant agree more. So sad. I got my original xbox in 2008 It was a modded version, a 360 in 2010 jasper version which was jtagged later in 2014 and an Xbox one s in 2017. As you can see I love my xboxes now my 11 yr old nephew is playing both the 360 with kinect and the xbox one s while im playing with my ps4 pro.

David Peters well there were some technical issues with BC because ps3 used hardware that woulda made ps4 BC a pain in the ass. However i fully expect psnow to be pretty much the same thing as XBGamepass next gen, minus the whole "new games launch day/date on Gamepass"

I actually loved 'some' of the new innovative features, it was really ahead of it's time. The problem was their messaging, no emphasis on gaming, and that arrogant asshole being the spokesman for the next generation.
The original launch of the xbox one was like Disney destroying Star Wars.

i was xbox360 all the way last gen but after that show i couldnt get behind it so i jumped ship and got the PS4 and havnt looked back until xbox one started doing awesome BC making all my xbox360 games look and play better then ever, now i have a xbox one x and a PS4 pro, its good to see xbox doing beter here's wishing for a good E3 from xbox and PS camp
I may be a outlier but was in full suport of the kinect being bundled, mostly because I was hoping the issues with the device wasn't limitations of the hardware, but limitations of the software and budget, making good games on the kinect cost money with limited base no point to do it.
