    Hmmmm. My Kohlrabi grown in coco coir is purple half-way up the stem, and not bitter. One of my favorite crops in taste and appearance.

    Biochar is found in the Amazon rainforest and is one of the factors responsible for the insane amount of growth in the Amazon rainforest. It is available for purchase and I am wondering if you could do a comparison test with biochar?

    I watched Mandi's taste test like 3 times just to make sure I heard her right lol. She said 3 and 4 were from the same batch and mild and 1 and 2 were really strong. So it sounds like Burpee tastes better, but also more bitter. The tastes weren't mixed up between mediums.

    Another great video! Looks like i will be changing my mediumas the screen only seems to be working for my brassicas. I have tried amaranth twice with no luck, peas twice with better luck the 2nd time but still not good and sunflower once with bad germination. I have made a mix of my own that is coco, worm castings, and kelp that on my first tray of sunflower germination is amazing so i started another tray of peas with the same mixture. I know that the Kelp can be a little bit slower of a release nutrient but i plan to recycle all my used medium roots and all in a worm bed to make my own casting to use. it may take me a month or two to see if there are any benifits to this.

      Really excited to hear how this works for you! I really appreciate you sharing!! How much castings are you using per tray? We’ve been really liking the lower quantities of castings. A little seems to go a long way with the current brand we have.
      I’m curious about adding kelp to it now. Have you tried a test with castings with kelp vs castings without kelp?
      I’d love to stay in the loop on this as you experiment!

      @@OnTheGrow I am adding Kelp to it now I just might not be getting the full benifits from it. I am using like you do 6 cups coco, a 1/4 cup casting, and 2 teaspoons fine ground kelp meal. My sunflower tray is the first I am trying this on and just put into blackout this morning. I will send you a pick from tonight on FB.

    Your experiments have excellent teaching value. Do you think you will get to the point of composing your own soil mix based on the best outcomes of your experiments? I would love to buy basic ingredients that are pretty much universally available and find a formula that works consistently well.

    That Burpee mix bag is so tiny though. I wonder if it would be worth the constant purchase depending on how much you eat or sell.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад

      Great question! If you can find it locally, the price is around $7.00/bag compared to around $12/bag online. Assuming you get it locally for around the $7.00, it’ll cost about $1.31 to fill the BSF 10x20 tray... not too bad really. Personally, the best option I think, is to find a really good local organic soil and buy bulk of it. Fill up a truck bed for $40.00 and you’ll be filling trays for $0.05 or so per tray...

      @@OnTheGrow You mean like a compost from a land fill?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад +1

      that’s an option... I’d find someone who specialized in organic soils and get it from there. Waste centers have compost, but there are landscaping companies and all kinds of others that have soil blends...
