    When growing microgreens I use my own worm castings straight from the 'pile' in the garden. I mix 1/4 cup castings with a half gallon of water. I also water from the bottom. I use the plastic strawberry containers that I get from the grocery store and grow in coco coir. They have the vent holes in the bottom of the containers which makes it easy to water. We eat our greens with a little bit of a vinaigrette dressing as well as on salads and sandwiches. They are delicious! Thanks for your videos teaching us how to grow microgreens. 😁

    This is a great experiment! Nice work! I wonder if perhaps the excess of nutrients in the worm castings brought out more of the "natural" mustard bitterness that's "supposed", though not desirable, to be there. Other microgreens would be a great experiment with the same ratios, or even strawberries. Also I wonder, I noticed your taste tester had a can of soda. Do you think this could have affected her taste buds at all?

    I am new to microgreen cultivation. There is a boatload of how to videos but not many deal with a close scientific method approach to examining methodology. I personally love that you give the viewer and economic breakdown of your costs. What I have run into is the soil part of microgreen culture is non renewable and expensive. Particularly if you toss in coco coir. Coco loco is expensive as well. For those of us who are just growing microgreens for home consumption the cost is critical and your video gives me the cost benefit factor to find direction for doing my own growing. Thankyou.

      Hi, Phil! If you vermicompost, worms LOVE the leftover soil & roots. I use miracle gro organic raised bed soil from Lowe’s at only $9 for 1.5 cu ft and then when it’s spent I toss it into the worm factory or the compost tumbler. It breaks down into compost real fast & can be reused.

    Does the bitterness mean there is more nutrients in it, veggies with lots of potassium are very bitter. Just curious to the nutrient levels and if you have looked into that information

    I was told that using soil is not good to use for Microgreens...as it is more sceptical to bugs and flies very easily...I was told that soil-less grow mediums are much better because they don't get bugs and flies...do you know anything about this as we trust your judgement and would like to know your thoughts...thanks so much for always doing such a great job...it guys make it all looks so easy

    35+ years ago , when I first started worm farming , some plants might have been sweeter, darker or just more flavorful than others..herbs don't do as well in a lot of castings because it seemed to make them more mild ( and herbs I wanted FLAVOR) I also think using egg shell ground into almost a powder for worm grit made the tomatoes sweeter.

    Depending on grower, what earthworms do is create nutrient dense food so nutrition tests on plant nutrition would be useful.

    The first bite of a flavor can be reported more accurately vs subsequent bites. To reduce this effect you could repeat the blind tasting in a different order, or use more judges (also in varying sample order).

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад

      Yeah, we realize this and do our best to be as unbiased as possible in describing the flavors! Sometimes we both taste test it to make sure, but we’ve done a few hundred taste tests... I feel that we do a good job of realizing the first flavor will generally yield the strongest impression.
