What if you treated coco coir with hydrogen peroxide first. I’m going to start up a grow business but I’m on the fence between soil mix or coco coir. Also what to do with used medium after harvest ? Recycle or not ? Thanks.
Great question! You could definitely treat the coco with a prophylactic ahead of time to reduce any chances of mold or pathogens. Some people even bake theirs in the oven... We like to compost ours to be reused later in our outdoor garden! We've seen people strain out the debris from the coco and sanitize it to be reused for microgreens, but we find that to be a bit tedious....

Loved you experiment with coco vs soil . I am ready to try my first batch of sun seeds. However, one question…. Can the soil and coco be reused for A second or third batch?
Most home growers certainly do reuse the soil. I am not sure how tho...I think they usually add some more soil/or cococour to the top -- at some point some nutrients/fertilizer or compost is needed at the bottom. I would think after 3 grows. Wondering if the remaining roots should be removed, it would interrupt the new fragile green. I am gonna buy some additional trays so each time I regrow I will use a fresh tray with soil composition 2/3's of the old used soul and 1/3 new and a tiny bit of mushroom compost on tye bottom. I want to try to keep this going because I lLOVE microgreens plus have rabbits that love to eat. They will like it grown like to 20 days even. 😂.
Hey there, cool vid. I have a question about the lights. When you say they add up to 6k lumens, does that mean that individual lumens of each lamp stacks? Because I cant find T5's with such a high lumen value.
I have been growing outdoors (southern hemisphere) and with the cold Early-Spring temperatures I needed to have sunflowers under weights for 9 days and then in blackout for 2 days and another 2 days of "sunlight". That's crazy slow, cos in the heat of summer I could grow a batch in as little as 5 days. I will start growing again next month.

After watching this video I was thinking . Maybe you could mix the Coco with the soil. At different %. It would be interesting to see if you get the color from the Coco.
What if you adjusted the amount of water so that the coco coir got less water and the soil got more. Maybe this brand of coco is just not as absorbant? Not that I'm rooting for it. I was happy that the potting soil "won" since I already have soil.
😉Thank you so much for the support Susan Raby-Dunne!! OMG...it just amazing when we research another grower...last week we had Darrell (Onthegrow ~Team member) take a course on a Microgreen Business based in the UK... 💚"Mould" (as they spelled it) was their number one enemy at first and their safe use of HydrogenPeroxide was the solution! We’ve been trying to find a source as well... I wish there were some better local options and as soon as we figure something out, I’ll likely make a video on it! Let me know if you find a good local source. I did find some coco coir bricks at Walmart last year, and they were incredibly cheap and did an amazing job. Like $7.00 per brick compared to the standard of $20 on Amazon. I bought all 50 they had because they were discontinuing them and I haven’t seen them restock it yet. Disappointing because it did a great job, was supposedly organic and had an amazing price point.

Coco Coir holds more moisture…..2 cups of water a day is too much. Aim for 1 to 1.5 cups of water a day, and only if needed. Also soil has nutrients built in and coco coir doesn’t, so adding nutrients to your water source is essential. I use an ocean nutrient.
Hi CJ, thanks for this very honest video, speaking of the slow germination. I had the same issue of slow germination and some stunted growth just like you, but without soaking. The boat and the UK is cold at the moment, so that's probably the reason for the s-l-o-wwwww growth🤔

I've had the same, but exclusively with sunflowers. I thought it was surely the seeds, but this is making me think there might be something with the combination that makes it more prevalent? Glad I didn't throw them out, so I can try them on a different soil medium.
@@Bordigan89 I'm about to try this stuff from sierra natural science called hydrobiotic which is organic and you mix it with the water you use to bottom water and it treats the soil for damping off. If that doesn't work I only have 2 other options. Switch to this expensive burpees soil and use less hydroponic nutrients, or switch to promix with the shitty peat bog which is one of the most unsustainable resources on the planet and a massive carbon sink.... Running out of options...
I’m now using a second coco coir supplier and I still have the same damping off issue with sunflower. It grows great for the first 6-7 days and then the stems begin to rot. Using soils and mats I’ve never once run into this problem, only with coco coir. I have a batch growing now and I’ve been careful not to over water it, thinking that may be the problem. But, the problem is persisting. I will add, that one of the two sunflower seed types I’m using is not having this problem, as of yet anyway. We’ll see come harvest. If anyone has any more information on this problem, please share your experience and thoughts. I’d like to make the switch to coco coir, because of the space I can save storing it, but I need to work out this problem with the sunflower before I can commit to the switch. Thanks everybody!!

AWESOME VIDEO!!! I had to watch right away!!! I'm using Plantonix coco from your store. I just tossed out some sunflower micro's on day 6 yesterday:( I overwatered and it smelled BAD. About that! I have some cilantro on day 7, following your video. They haven't fully popped yet HOWEVER I think I overwatered in the beginning and the coco smells BAD. I sprayed with peroxide and cracked the lid. I heard some crackle... Should I toss it and start over over? Do you think the coco infected?
You might be able to salvage the cilantro, so I’d wait and see if the smell goes away. Just let it dry out a bit. Over-watering Coco can be easy to do because it retains water so well... we still accidentally over-water it 😆 If you have any stagnant water in your tray, tilt it into the sink and see if you can carefully pour out any excess. That way you can refresh the water quicker! Hope that helps and thank you so much for the support! 🤗🌱🌱

Lol, truth! Sometimes we noticed negative effects from nitrogen though… it’s really crazy how many factors and how they’re applied can have an affect on the growth of micros!
Look into soil science, read "Teaming With Microbes" by Jeff Lowenfels, then you'll begin to understand why using an inert medium (such as coco) to grow plants is just a bad idea. A tablespoon of healthy soil contains like 5 billion living organisms, most of which are beneficial, and compete against pathogens.

What was the tall stem magenta leaf plants growing on the left above the sunflowers on the lighting rack?
Great info guys..... thank you x

Can you tell me what kind of nutrients you addto your waterfor bottom watering?
Love it👍
Hi, potting mix is not soil, is it?
Loved you experiment with coco vs soil . I am ready to try my first batch of sun seeds.
However, one question…. Can the soil and coco be reused for
A second or third batch?

Curious your thoughts on adding a bit of used coffee grounds into coco coir grow medium - mixed in coffee into ~ top 1/3 of coir.
When you water directly from the faucet, are you concerned about PH balance?
When they say tap water they mean to say it has no nutrients. But they do ph balance the water

So... as per another video of yours from September 2020, about sunflowers, no peroxide treatment at all with this?
😉Thank you so much for the support Susan Raby-Dunne!! OMG...it just amazing when we research another grower...last week we had Darrell (Onthegrow ~Team member) take a course on a Microgreen Business based in the UK...
💚"Mould" (as they spelled it) was their number one enemy at first and their safe use of HydrogenPeroxide was the solution! We will further this concept and reissue our standards due to that research!!
What is the best place to get bulk coir? No we’re local has it. I tried Home Depot. But didn’t care for it. Liked Amazon better.
Can you use any sunflower seeds or are there some better?

Coco Coir holds more moisture…..2 cups of water a day is too much. Aim for 1 to 1.5 cups of water a day, and only if needed. Also soil has nutrients built in and coco coir doesn’t, so adding nutrients to your water source is essential. I use an ocean nutrient.
Hi CJ, thanks for this very honest video, speaking of the slow germination. I had the same issue of slow germination and some stunted growth just like you, but without soaking. The boat and the UK is cold at the moment, so that's probably the reason for the s-l-o-wwwww growth🤔

My cocoir has been causing extreme damping issues for months. What brand have you had success with?

🙂Our space stays between 75-80F degrees in the Summer (Best Germination Temps) and between 67-73F in Winter and our humidity around 50% or under. We also have one large fan that circulates the majority of the air and small computer fans on each shelf of each rack. All fans are running for 24 hours of the day. We do not pump carbon-dioxide in the space and the space only exchanges air when we open the door a few times throughout the day.
🙂Maybe we can still help you with some final details!!!
Over-watering Coco can be easy to do because it retains water so well... we still accidentally over-water it 😆
If you have any stagnant water in your tray, tilt it into the sink and see if you can carefully pour out any excess. That way you can refresh the water quicker!
Hope that helps and thank you so much for the support! 🤗🌱🌱

More nitrogen, more growth. Makes sense :)
💚Thank you so much for the Feedback Morgan Atkinson! We appreciate your support!
Is not a fair test if u dont give nutriens on the coco coir, nutrient in the soil will make the difference… pretty disappointed
If you had chicken, you could give it to them.
Coir is pronounced 'koy-er'. It has nothing to do with the french word noir.
