Thank you so much for these videos. I've been trying at home and had some questions on this video if that's ok: - Do you turn off the lights at some point during the day after they are out of blackout? - Did you have to get a permit to grow and sell microgreens? - Is it necessary to say “wash before eating” since its a clean hydroponic grow? - In terms of the “sell by” label, do you have a standard number of days for each type of grow or is it a general date? What’s the usuall lengh you use?
Thank you for the comment! - Yes, I turn off lights for 6 hours a day, so my light cycle is 18 hours on and 6 hours off. I have a light timer for this. - I do not have to get a permit to grow because my annual sales are less than 25k a year. You will have to check with your state on their produce rules. -I don't think I have to put that disclaimer "wash before eating" on my product, but I had the space on my labels so I did. -I did tests to see how long my microgreens stay good in the fridge and figured out that I should label my sell by date for 10 days after harvest. They were actually staying good in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.
Anyone from Canada? I have a basic question on trays. You used two trays. And a mesh. Both shallow. One without holes. What about the other one. Is it mesh tray. Or just with holes tray and then you added a mesh on it. And thanks for the detailed information.
Girlfriend, thank you for this! I’m trying to educate myself. I’ve been reading and taking notes. Started germinating and buying some new toys. It’s really so much fun.
Absolutely amazing! I love it so much. Tons of output. They had price staggeringly high at first ($79) but maybe was error since they are $29.99 now which is just absolutely perfect price point for how well it works.
Excellent job on the video: informative, concise, and well presented. Thank you for sharing the links. As you mentioned, there appears to be information gleaned from a variety of places, and it appears that all of the information will be helpful in getting started.
You may want to check out another video I made "my full microgreens growing process". Also, the racks and some of the products I use are here... sites.google.com/view/woodstinyfarmshop/microgreen-products?authuser=0
Forgive me if someone already asked, but what is the reason why you use barcodes? I think you are the first microgreens farmer I've seen mention that, and I'm still in my setup phase so I'm trying to absorb all the knowledge I can.
HEY AWESOME VIDEO...Very informative...question....did you find it hard to get clients at first? And how much did it cost yoou to get started for 2 full racks?
Thank you! I only have one grocery store client and it's because I knew one of the store managers! I don't have all the startup numbers handy, but I think it was around 5k worth of supplies, and other business expenses.
I live in south Carolina and want to start. It's very humid down here in the lowcountry. What set up would you recommend for different climates? I personally love sowing seeds in the natural state of the earth, your insight would be great!
You should have them in a temperature and humidity controlled room or greenhouse. Growing outside would be too much variation in temps. You want them to be around 70 degrees and around 50-60% humidity.
Its really good video and I appreciate it , Can you please give me links to buy exact trays and mesh and also a tray for covering seeds after germinating
Thank you for showing us everything that you use. I am curious about the Sell By date that you demonstrated. How far out do you make the date, from when you harvest?
I've found 68-72 is an ideal temp with humidity being around 50-60. It gets colder in my grow room in the winter so I add a couple days onto my growing time because they grow slower. Just trial and error!
I already had my product ready except for the barcodes. I also knew one of the store managers so that helped me out a bit. I went in with samples and had a chat with the produce manager. He said that if I would credit back any expired product, he would accept my greens.
@@woodstinyfarm Thank you for your reply. That is very useful information. I am hoping to start growing microgreens this year and see if its something i could grow into a sustainable business in my area. If you are comfortable answering this please do, if not thats ok. What do your margins look like? Revenue VS Profit? And what are you able to sell your microgreens for? How many oz do you average a tray?
Hi, your video appeared on the main page of RUclips, so I decided to check it out. Thanks for showing how you grow your food in detail. I'm from Poland, and my family is also planning to grow our own food here. By the way, do you generate the energy for growing your food yourself, or do you rely on the grid? Best regards.
Thank you so much for this video. I am wondering if you would be willing to share your business model? How much profit do you make on 20 trays? Also what type of licensing does one have to get?
You would need to check with your state on their licensing requirements for produce. In Montana, they do not require a license unless you sell 25k or more annually. As far as my income, I only have one grocery store client and do 20 trays a week. I'm averaging around 500 profit a month. I'm deciding to not take on more clients at the moment and just work with this one account for now.
You probably could, but the cost of shipping and packaging would be high. You'd have to have a cooler insert and make sure it gets to the person in a short amount of time. Not sure it would be worth it because you'd have to charge a lot to cover all the expenses.
Do you have a link for commission to where to buy the exact trays? Thank you for your info I am so excited to get started growing for my family. We are so scared of listeria breakouts and want to start our own food growing
@@woodstinyfarm what are the cute color trays you had? and i saw on the grow media website you linked they have a silicone or steel grow media? which one would you recommend?
@@woodstinyfarm also, would you suggest a few seeds to start with? i checked the website you recommended for seed but its kind of overwhelming! thank you
I recently switched from soil to silicone mesh and lost four trays. Should I have my insert tray be a mesh tray also? It has drainage holes, but not like an insert mesh tray. Thanks.
You might get more water exposure with the mesh trays as well. I only use those for my larger seeds (sunflower and pea). Mostly because I had a lot of the other trays before I switched to this method. All I can say is trial and error!! I might actually do a trial run with the mesh trays on my smaller seeds to see how they work.
My local grocery store did not sell microgreens, so I approached them. We only had microgreens at our farmers market, but nowhere that you could easily buy year round. When I approaches them, they said that they had some requests for microgreens.
@@woodstinyfarm may i ask what you are charging per per ounce or by tray. Ive seen prices all over the place from 5 to 6 per per ounce then im seeing per tray any place from $20 to 30 and even higher i had one person saying they charging $72 for a tray of beets😂
I but my packaging through webstaurant. I initially bought a biodegradable container, but it was eating up all my profits. You may want to check them out and see if they ha e another option that would be good for you!
Thank you soooo much! My wife and I are trying to transition from the corporate world to a microgreens business. Your guidance is priceless!
I know the feeling! It really is a good business to get into!
Best of luck!

I do 10 days from harvest
How do you initiate selling microgreens to your local market? On your self printing label, does that takes a lot of your costs in inks. Thanks
I just took samples down to a local grocery store and talked to the manager. My costs on labels and ink are fairly minimal.
Thank you for sharing! Very helpful.
Hey Marissa, Love your content, question. Do you print the label yourself and if so, what printer do you use for this task?
Yes, I print them on an HP Laserjet Pro M452nw
Thanks so much. You're an angel 🤍😊

btw what is your pricing selling 12oz and 24oz container?
I don't currently sell those sizes.
@@woodstinyfarm May i know how do you price your microgreen according to weight you selling now pls
THANKS = GREAT INFO - THE SUNFLOWER - ARE THEY THE TINY SEEDS OR THE BIGGER ONES?
The sunflowers are the bigger ones. I have to soak them for at least 8 hours before I plant.
What temperature and humidity do you shoot for and is that year round?

I sell through my local grocery store...Super1 Foods. I typically do not sell straight to the consumer, unless I get a special request.
